Three law students received $2,500 scholarships from the Magic City Bar Association (MCBA) at the Annual Judicial Reception and Scholarship banquet.

Starr Culpepper of Birmingham School of Law, Merika Coleman of Miles College School of Law, and Jaidrea Ford of Jones School of Law in Montgomery all earned scholarships.

“With law school tuition and fees averaging over $30,094 a year, many students need help making ends meet,” said Ida Tyree Hyche, chair, Scholarship Selection Committee. “The Magic City Bar Association’s mission includes helping qualified minority students supplement their expenses through its annual scholarships.”

The keynote speaker at the reception was retired U.S. Magistrate Judge Vanzetta Penn McPherson, who spoke about the relevance of the African American bar in the 21st century.

The MCBA also recognized and honored judges from the 10th Judicial Circuit of Jefferson County including Houston L. Brown; Helen Shores Lee; Jack Lowther; Tommy Nail; Caryl Privett; and Sheldon L. Watkins.

Five other students were recognized, and received $500 scholarships.

They were: Rodney Patrick, III of Cumberland School of Law; Michael T. Bell of Birmingham School of Law; Carla Crawford of Miles College School of Law; Brandon Price of Jones School of Law; and Neena Speer of University of Alabama School of Law.

Retired Justice Ralph D. Cook, MCBA President, said, “We remain appreciative and gratified by the outpouring of contributions from our sponsors and individual supporters.”
