It’s a new year and a good time think about our health and welfare. We asked Birmingham-area residents, How do you maintain your well-being?

Heather Johnson

Heather Johnson: “I try to exercise [during the week] and I track my steps through a fitness watch called Fitness Tracker and I also try to eat as much fruits and vegetables as I can. Health is wealth, so I just try to take care of myself as best as I can.”

Cindy Harmon

Cindy Harmon: “I’m actually the wellness coordinator for Alabama Power Company so health and wellbeing is my job, but on top of exercising and making it a point to eat healthy, one of the things I try to do is be resilient. I really work on trying to develop the skill to be able to adapt in order to control my stress level, so I’m learning to go with the flow rather than let everything stress me.”

Devin Crenshaw

Devin Crenshaw: “I try to surround myself [with] positive people. It’s important to exercise and eat right and all that for your physical health, but for my overall wellbeing I try to keep a positive attitude and I try to stay around people who uplift and encourage me . . . I distance myself from negative things and people.”

Hayden Slaughter

Hayden Slaughter: “I actually see a therapist two times a week. I think it’s important for everyone to take care of their mental health and do what makes them feel good. I think people focus more on the physical health and not enough on the mental, so I try to focus on both but especially my mental health because it’s very important.”
