The Birmingham (AL) Chapter, The Links, Inc. will fill UAB’s Alys Stephens Center with beautiful art and music as they raise funding for the organization’s many service projects on Sat. Aug. 26. The public is invited to join us for An Evening with Friends: Where Art Meets Soul featuring Honorary Chair, Patty McDonald.
McDonald is a well-known arts philanthropist, community leader, and actress. She serves in leadership roles in several Birmingham organizations –including UAB’s Alys Stephens Center and the Samford University Executive Council for the Arts—and has established scholarship programs at UAB and Red Mountain Theatre Company.
In addition, the event will feature internationally renowned visual artist, Brenda Joysmith as a special guest for the evening. Her artwork can be found at the Smithsonian Museum of African-American History and Culture and the Colgate-Palmolive Permanent Collection, as well as in the private collections of Maya Angelou, Oprah Winfrey, and many other well-known art enthusiasts.
The Birmingham (AL) Chapter has commissioned a painting by Joysmith entitled Mission and Legacy. The highly anticipated piece will be unveiled on the evening of August 26th and available for purchase—along with 100 signed and numbered limited edition prints. Proceeds will underwrite the chapter’s programs.
Annually, members of the Birmingham chapter volunteer more than 3,000 hours in community service. Their work covers a broad spectrum of initiatives including public education, health and wellness, mental health and voter education and awareness. The chapter’s signature program, JAMS (Joining Artists and Music in the Schools), is a comprehensive music education program that exposes elementary school students to various musical genres and an enriching educational program.
The Links, Incorporated is an international, not-for-profit corporation, established in 1946. The membership consists of 14,000 professional women of color in 284 chapters located in 42 states, the District of Columbia and the Commonwealth of the Bahamas. The organization was founded in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, on Nov. 9, 1946.
