HBCU Football Weekend: Miles vs. Tuskegee for SIAC West Title

Miles College will host Tuskegee University on Saturday with the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) West Division championship on the line.

The Golden Bears (3-3) will battle the Golden Tigers (4-2) with a 2 p.m. kickoff in Fairfield, on Saturday, Nov. 3. The winner of this game will face Albany State (5-0) for the SIAC football championship on Saturday, Nov. 10.

Miles College is coming off a 28-27 win over Clark Atlanta. The Golden Bears won the game on their last offensive possession with quarterback Daniel Smith throwing a 28-yard touchdown pass to wide receiver Mikhail Jacobs.

Smith completed 12-of-23 passes for 170 yards with one touchdown and one interception. Jacobs had three receptions for 61 yards including the game-winning TD catch.

Defensively, linebackers Austin Stephens and Antonio Evans did a great job against Clark Atlanta’s ground attack. Stephens had 11 total and four solo tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Evans chipped in with eight total tackles.

Tuskegee fell to Central State, 40-36, heading into this important contest. The Golden Tigers had a strong passing attack in a losing effort. Tuskegee quarterback Ahmad Deramus completed 17-of-37 for 300 yards and three touchdowns. Wide receiver Javarrius Cheatham had a great day catching seven passes for 122 yards and one touchdown.

On defense, the Golden Tigers received some great performances from linebacker Kalil Gray who had 16 total tackles and 2.5 tackles for loss. Linebacker Davoris Thomas had 14 total tackles and defensive back Jamal Odom contributed 10 total tackles.

This game should attract plenty of attention in the SIAC.

SWAC

In the Southwestern Athletic Conference (SWAC), Alabama Agriculture & Mechanical (3-2) will face Arkansas-Pine Bluff (0-4) on the road. The kickoff will be at 2:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 3.

AAMU had an impressive 27-10 victory over its arch rival Alabama State in the Magic City Classic. Freshman wide receiver Nathaniel Dell had a big game catching six passes for 204 yards and two TDs against Alabama State. He was chosen as the STATS FCS Freshman of the Week. Dell was also named the SWAC Newcomer of the Week.

In addition to Dell, AAMU quarterback Aqeel Glass played extremely well, connecting on 17-of-30 passes for 322 yards and three touchdowns.

Alabama State (1-2) will entertain Texas Southern (1-4) on Saturday, Nov. 3. The kickoff will be at 2 p.m. The Hornets will look to get back on the right rack following their loss to the Bulldogs.

ASU quarterback KHA’Darris Davis who threw for 181 yards against Alabama A&M will try to get the offense moving against Texas Southern.

Defensively, defensive back Dennis Roberts and linebacker Darron Johnson had eight and seven total tackles respectively against AAMU.
