Jefferson County is offering residents an opportunity to drop off their Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) at three locations from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday July 25 during a contact-free collection event.

The HHW Collection Event will be held simultaneously at the following three locations:

  • Site 1- 1205 15th Avenue North, Bessemer
  • Site 2 – 940 Main Street, Gardendale
  • Site 3 – 7952 Crestwood Boulevard, Irondale

“Common household items such as paint, solvents, yard chemicals, some cleaning products and automotive fluids should never be discarded along with regular trash,” said Tony Petelos, Jefferson County CEO and County Manager. “Many of these items contain chemicals or components which require special handling and disposal because they can be dangerous or toxic if they mix with other items.  Participating in our event where these items are properly handled and disposed protects Jefferson County residents, trash collection staff, and the environment.”

All three sites will accept the same items including:

  • Ammunition
  • Batteries
  • Electronics
  • Household cleaners
  • Household cooking grease
  • Motor oil, antifreeze
  • Paint
  • Paper shredding (limit 5 boxes)
  • Pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers (yard chemicals)
  • Prescription drugs
  • Tires
  • White goods (large appliances)

How to prepare and what to expect:

  • Keep HHW in original containers if possible; make sure lids are sealed and secure.
  • Carefully place the HHW items to be unloaded in the trunk or back of the car, truck bed, or on a utility trailer, being careful to keep them upright to prevent spills.
  • Once on site, pull up to an unloading area as directed by staff.
  • Stay in your car with the windows up while staff unloads your vehicle.

This HHW Collection Event is offered through a partnership among the Jefferson County Commission, City of Bessemer, City of Gardendale, City of Irondale, Jefferson County Department of Health, and the Storm Water Management Authority Inc.  A complete list of sponsors and in-kind donations is included on the attached flyer.  For more information about how you can help prevent water pollution in your community, visit jccal.org/ds and select Stormwater Management Program – Community Outreach.
