Birmingham Promise on Monday launched a new semester of paid internships for seniors in Birmingham City Schools.

Throughout the spring, 75 seniors will gain work experience at 65 local businesses, ranging from the city’s largest public and private institutions to smaller businesses and startups.

“These experiences allow students to earn money, to develop job skills and to begin building professional networks that will last a lifetime,” said Rachel Harmon, executive director at Birmingham Promise. “At the same time, our participating businesses are building a pipeline of talent that will help them meet their workforce needs in the future. It’s laying the foundation for ongoing economic success in Birmingham.”

Birmingham Promise internships focus on four core industries: finance and insurance, healthcare and life sciences, energy and engineering, and digital technology.

Students who participate in the program earn $15 an hour and also receive academic credit for their on-the-job experiences. The students are matched with local employers after an application and interview process.

One of the students who received an internship is Aniyah Mosley, a Wenonah High School student who will work this spring at Protective.

“We were thrilled to welcome Aniyah to Protective and had a great time getting to know her while onboarding her at Protective,” said Kat DePalma, human resources consultant at Protective, one of the local businesses providing internships this spring. “Protective is excited to have this opportunity to support our Birmingham students while giving them an opportunity to learn our industry.”

Since Birmingham Promise launched in 2020, close to 250 students in Birmingham City Schools have benefited from the internship program, and more than 80 local employers have participated.
