It’s a good thing he gave auditioning another chance. Pynk Beard seized the opportunity to appear on NBC’s “America’s Got Talent,” and Tuesday’s night show introduced the nation to one of Birmingham’s current stars, and native son Sebastian Kole.
Pynk Beard and the rest of his talented band performed the original song, “Mine, Lord Willing,” and quickly had the crowd and judges singing along.
“That was really, really fantastic,” said Simon Cowell after Pynk Beard’s performance. “I think that’s a hit song. Such an amazing feeling when everything goes right… I just love you. If I had [a Golden Buzzer], you’d be getting it.”
Before he wowed everyone, he talked about his past backstage.
“My mom tells me that I was 3 years old when I wrote my first song. I don’t remember that. The first song I remember writing I was five. And it was called ‘God Is My Inspiration,'” said. Reflecting on his long journey through the music industry, he explained, “I tried to be an artist. It didn’t work out. They didn’t quite understand Black people doing country at the time, so I gave up on the idea of putting out an album of my own. I just really pursued being a songwriter. One of my main questions I always ask is ‘Who are you?’ I always spend a lot of time talking to artists about just who they are, and over time I think I just kind of forgot who I was and I became just ‘a songwriter.’”
He said the experience was different from his first audition for a television show. Rather than being asked to perform someone else’s music, “America’s Got Talent” allowed him to showcase his own work and his full range as a performer.
