The Alabama State University Board of Trustees on Friday voted to terminate President Gwendolyn Boyd’s contract. The 8-6 vote came after Boyd gave almost two hours of testimony about why she should remain the university’s president.

Boyd was suspended from her post Nov. 4 after being charged with “failure to maintain the confidence of the board.”

On Friday, Boyd said her focus had been on fixing ASU’s financial problems, revamping some of the university’s policies and procedures and removing the university from the Southern Association of Colleges and Students’ warning status.

Boyd told the Montgomery Advertiser after the vote that she tried to end the “revolving door” of issues the university faces. “[The students] deserve a greater chance,” she said.

A special committee, led by trustee Angela McKenzie, has been organized by board chairman Ralph Ruggs to search for Boyd’s successor.

Provost Leon Wilson is currently acting as interim president.
