Obama is Not the President of Black Folks by Dr. Jesse J. Lewis

0
Dr. Jesse Lewis, Sr. is the founder of The Birmingham Times.

Barack Obama is the President of the United States of America that includes all folks.

There is no way in the world that a Black President, whoever he may be, can create a special program for any particular race.

Here are a few of the dumbest statements made by politicians running for President of the United States.

How could anyone like Rupert Murdock, who is Chairman of the largest media company in the world, that includes Fox News Channel, make the statement that “America needs a real Black President”?

Murdock, the founder of the global News Corporation media empire, issued an apology after he faced social media backlash following his suggestion that President Barack Obama isn’t a “real Black President.”

Murdock apologized and tweeted that he “personally finds both men (Barack and Carson) charming.

He sparked outrage on Twitter and CNN when he tweeted praise for GOP presidential candidate Ben Carson, saying he would be a “real Black” president, as opposed, supposedly, to President Barack Obama.

The Republicans who are running for the President of the United States are making some of the dumbest statements that I have ever heard in life.  And, the more outrageous and ridiculous the statement is increases their numbers in the polls.

Dr. Ben Carson, who happens to be Black, has made more dumb statements than Donald Trump.

Carson, who was once one of the country’s leading neurosurgeons before retiring several years ago, has rocketed up in the polls with appeal as a plain-spoken outsider and a man of faith.

He began his rise to prominence after the 2013 National Prayer Breakfast when he attacked President Barack Obama’s signature health care reform while standing just a few feet away from the president.

A former Sunday School teacher, Carson has rallied much of the GOP’s conservative Christian base with a call for greater religious freedoms and his fierce opposition to abortion rights.

A campaign event, this summer scheduled for a suburban Phoenix church accommodating 2,300, had to be moved to the city’s convention center, where more than 6,000 people attended.  Some said the crowd topped Trump’s event the month before.

But Carson, who has never served in government or run for office before, has been dogged by a seemingly never ending string of statements – critics see them as gaffes, tone deaf, and revealing an ignorance of public policy, while backers, say they show he’s unafraid to speak common sense truth that others shy away from.

In March, Carson said he is sure that homosexuality is a choice, explaining on CNN’s “New Day” that evidence for that was people “go into prison straight – and when they come out, they’re gay.”

Carson also recently touched off a bigger uproar when he said he would not support a Muslim running for president.  “I would not advocate that we put a Muslim in charge of this nation,” Carson said last month on NBC’s “Meet the Press” – drawing sharp criticism from Democrats.

The last two dumbest statements Carson made recently are:  Carson says President Barack Obama would have suffered a “seizure” if the gunman who targeted Christians as he shot up an Oregon college last week had singled out Muslims instead.

He stated that a man drew a gun on him who incidentally was a Black man and he quickly and softly told the Black man, “You don’t want to shoot me, you want to shoot the cashier.”  (Incidentally, the cashier was white.)

Of all the people in the Republican Party running for President, Dr. Carson is the least qualified.

Are Drake And Serena Williams Engaged?

0

rs_560x415-150824112203-1024-drake-serena

Have Drizzy and Serena made it official?

According to a new report, the rapper and tennis star are ready to walk down the aisle after Drake, 28, popped the question to Williams, 34, a few weeks ago.

According to OK magazine, following Serena’s loss at the 2015 U.S. Open last month, Drake whisked her away to his hometown of Toronto, where he popped the question in a romantic display. According to Hollywood Life, Drizzy “knows how lucky he is and, frankly, wanted to lock it down.”

“Now that he has her, he isn’t letting her go,” a source told the site.

The couple, who has yet to even admit they’re dating, have not confirmed the rumors.

So … yea.

As much as we would LOVE to see these two live happily ever after, we are having trouble buying this one. Both of them have so much going on with their careers, and — if we’re going to get really real — the two may just be having fun and not even that serious.

So, for now, we’ll just enjoy those moments of seeing them support each other, whether it’s as friends, lovers or an engaged couple.

The Real Watermelondrea Jones Responds to Raven-Symoné [WATCH]

0

Friday on “The View,” Raven-Symoné stuck her foot in her mouth yet again when she confessed that she wouldn’t hire someone with a “ghetto” name.

Unless you’ve been immersed in reports about NASA’s recent discovery of water on Mars, and you missed Raven’s latest round with controversy, she said:

“Just to bring it back, can we take back “racist” and say “discriminatory,” because I think that’s a better word. And I am very discriminatory against words like the ones that they were saying in those names. I’m not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea. It’s just not going to happen. I’m not going to hire you.”

As it turns out, there’s actually a Watermelondrea, Watermelondrea Jones to be exact, portrayed by Tré Melvin on YouTube. Ms. Jones heard Raven’s comments and she is not amused. She called out Raven on Twitter, saying: “lookin like a pheonix talking bout she ain’t gon hire me. out here lookin like a low battery. charge ur weave sis”.

Watch the clip below to see Watermelondrea Jones read the heck out of Raven:

Keeping an Eye on Safety for October 15, 2015

0

By Samuetta Hill Drew

October is Fire Prevention Month nationally. The U.S. Administration reports that fires kill more than 4,000 Americans each year and injuries 20,000 more. U.S. fire departments respond to approximately 2 MILLION fires each year with the vast majority of them being home fires.

Residents spend a great deal of time, money and resources on the aesthesis for their home but, often don’t use their time, money and resources protecting it adequately with regards to safety matters. All of us usually feel very safe, as we should, when we’re at home enjoying good food, watching television, relaxing or entertaining friends and family. To assist you with maintaining these feelings of home safety, comfort and security, several safety tips will be shared with you over the next two safety articles about fire prevention.

Fire Prevention Safety Tips:

  • Smoke Alarms – These continue to be considered one of the best safety protection measures for your homes. They are inexpensive and can be easily found at any home improvement store, Wal-Mart, Target, etc. Install one on every level of your home including your basement. If possible, try to make sure your alarm alerts the fire department when there is a fire. Test and clean your smokes alarms monthly and replace the batteries at least once a year.
  • Carbon Monoxide Detector – Install a working one in the common areas like your bedroom. Use the same safety maintenance measures previously listed for smoke alarms.
  • Prevent Electrical Fires – Don’t overload your circuits or extension cords. Remember never to place cords or wires (even during the Christmas holidays) underneath rugs or high traffic areas. Avoid loose electrical connections by checking the fit of the plug and the outlet. Note a poor connection between the plug and the outlet can cause overheating and could possible start a fire in minutes.
  • Keep Plugs Safe – Unplug all appliances when they are not in use. Follow the manufacture’s safety precautions and use your senses to detect danger. If your plug is overheating, smelling strange, shorts out or sparks, make sure you unplug them immediately and replace them or have them properly repaired.
  • Alternate Portable Space Heaters – This is the time of year many people use portable heating devices. Make sure there is ample space around the heating unit and furniture, curtains, or anything that could catch fire. Your heating unit should be at least three feet away from these aforementioned items. Have your chimneys inspected and make sure you use a fire screen to help maintain the fire in the fireplace.

Let’s always practice good fire prevention by Keeping an Eye on Safety!

In Tanner’s Words: The Journey to Playing Professional Basketball

It’s no secret that most hoop dreams don’t come true. But for Tyrese Tanner, she arrived, she saw and she conquered everything she has envisioned doing.

Like many other female basketball players, her dream was to play in the WNBA when she was younger, but as she grew older her vision changed.
But, not before playing for one of Alabama’s most elite AAU basketball clubs in the AL Twisters and top high school girls’ programs in Hoover High School where she was a standout.
As a 6-foot-1 forward, Tanner finished high school as the No. 2 Super Senior in the state and signed with Auburn University.

“I chose Auburn because it’s a family oriented university. The people around campus are whole-hearted and welcoming. I also didn’t want to travel too far from home. I was far enough to where I had a little freedom, but close enough to get home if there was an emergency.”

While at AU, Tanner had an impressive four-your stint. During her early years on campus, she worked to diversify her game. She used her size and length to her advantage. Many post players in the SEC were taller than her, so she could put the ball on the floor to blow by them and use her size to post smaller guards. These attributes along with the ability to shoot the deep ball, make free throws, pass and rebound, block shots, jump passing lanes for steals and run the floor like a track star blossomed Tanner into a hot commodity to professional scouts.

Once she was informed of the tax-free money overseas and agents started contacting her coaches during her junior year in college, Tanner’s sights shifted from the WNBA to playing internationally.

“Since I couldn’t start talking to any of them (agents) until my senior year was over, I considered staying overseas and staying in the states. By my senior year, I officially wanted to try to go overseas to make more money and to get the experience to travel to another country.”

She signed with Cadi La Seu from La Seu d’Urgell in Spain. Tanner had a translator but she already knew a lot of things since she studied some Spanish courses in college. However, she does admit playing in Spain was difficult compared to playing in America.
“Some moves you do in the states are considered a travel overseas. The shot clock is 24 seconds, but if your team gets the rebound, it only goes back to 14 seconds instead of completely resetting. Also, you only get eight seconds to cross half court and you get 10 in the states.”

Tanner was paid well and she loved that she was able to keep all of the money she earned without it being taxed, but a combination of being homesick and fatigue resulted in a short-lived professional career for her.

“I missed my family too much. Also, when you’ve played basketball for 19 years and have had multiple injuries and surgeries, your body gets tired.”

Once the ball stopped bouncing, she had a sense of direction. While at AU, Tanner received a bachelor’s degree in sociology with an emphasis in criminology. She wanted to be an FBI agent, but eventually changed her mind. She still wants to work for the government in some way, but her passion is helping people. Now, she plans to pursue a master’s in human resources.

“My goal right now is to be a human resource manager. The job I’m currently at, E.A. Renfroe, definitely puts me in the right direction and I love it so far. The skills I learned as an athlete are by far helping me be a successful person. I think you have more of an edge over candidates who haven’t played sports.”

Tanner asserts that some of the skills she grasped while playing consisted of being a leader and team player, a listener and coachable, a driven competitor, and possessing strength and perseverance just to name a few.
She also suggests playing basketball all these years, along with maturation, has prepared her for the real world and made her the woman she is today.

Besides applying the skills she learned in basketball to corporate America, Tanner has also been able to apply those same skills as a coach. Once she returned home, she had the opportunity to coach her former AAU club.

“I coached the 7th grade, girls Twisters team. I actually didn’t see myself coaching. I thought about it when I was overseas. I just decided to try it out and I actually love it. It’s not something I want to turn into a career yet, just in my spare time. But it’s not out the window.”

A final piece of advice Tanner has to offer anyone who plans to play professionally is to never give up or let anyone tell you that you can’t play a certain position. Defense is key and it will keep you in the game. Many professionals aren’t focused on defense, players are more worried about scoring on offense, but defense starts your offense.

Raven-Symoné’s Dad Says ‘She Says Some Dumb S#%T!’

0

Christopher B. Pearman, father of child-star turned self-hating, anti-Black talk show personality Raven-Symoné, has spoken out about the controversy his daughter sparked after saying that she would never hire someone with a “ghetto” name.

Read Pearman’s full Facebook post below:

To My Dear Friends,

There has been much talk today about my daughters comments on her show The View. People have been hitting me up all night questioning me about her remarks. Let me say this……I haven’t managed Ravens career in over 10 years. This woman is grown, has her own management team, has her own opinions, right or wrong, and is responsible for her own words and actions. A woman wrote to me tonight and said she couldn’t support my book because of the words of my daughter. What she fails to realize is that my book is about teaching your child to believe and achieve. Raven has achieved incredible success, and this cannot be denied!

Children grow up and become influenced by many things, situations and people. I certainly don’t agree with what she said….but she is damn near thirty years old. She’s a grown ass woman making grown ass mistakes. We all have been guilty of this.

I did my best as her father, mentor and career manager. I believe I did a Wonderful job. Aside from this inexcusable gaffe, her 29 years in the entertainment industry has been quite successful, for there have been only an Elite Few Child Stars to last this long and have little to no controversy. For this, I am Very Proud!

Raven is a really Beautiful, Sweethearted, Human Being.I should know. Her Mother and I Love her Very much and will always support her and have her back. Even if sometimes……….she says some dumb S#%T!

Here is the video that started it all. In it, two (non-Black) boys mock Black girl names and pathologize Black culture, something that Raven completely brought into, saying they were “her boys.”Papa Pearman is trying to get paid, but he does have a point. Raven is an adult, and she is responsible for her own actions. Click the picture below to watch.
