A Box of Valentine Chocolates Never Misses Its Target

0

Rev SynderDr. James L. Snyder

I spent a few very profitable hours searching for a special box of Valentine chocolates. After all, that special person in my life deserves all the time I can spare in choosing the right box of chocolate.
I’m not sure who came up with the idea of giving your “Sweetheart” a box of chocolates on Valentine’s Day, but I would like to shake his hand sometime. Of all the gizmos, doodads and gimmicks in the wide world, this one tops them all.
It took me a long time to uncover this mystery of romance. As a young husband, I thought chocolate was simply a piece of candy. Never in my wildest dreams did I ever imagine that one piece of chocolate could solve so many problems in life.
I do not claim to understand it myself. I do not need to know how, in order to use it to my advantage. Therefore, when it comes to a box of Valentine chocolates I do not need to know why it works or how it works, only that it works.
Buying a box of chocolate on Valentine’s Day can cover a multitude of sins and trespasses committed during the past year. Thus, my investment in a box of chocolate once a year pays rich and creamy dividends. It is a small price to pay for a year’s worth of faux pas, mistakes and rolled up socks under the bed.
That infamous day when I met, what later became the Gracious Mistress of the Parsonage, at a church altar reciting those words “I do,” was the beginning of my life. Whoever thought that two words, just three letters, could make such an impact upon a person’s life?
Of course, at the time I was too naïve and inexperienced in women-lore to understand that attached to those two little words, “I do,” came the dreaded “honey-do-list.” Only a bride, coached by her mother, understands the import of the whole scenario.
Like every husband to be before me, I stood at the altar looking goofy, wearing an insufferable smile thinking all was well with the world. Little did I know that when I said, “I do,” it was done. I have learned all the phases; do, did, done. And when I said, “I do,” I was done.
I must admit that the first years were quite a learning experience, especially for me. I do not think being a husband is natural. It is something you have learned all by yourself. And, it is nothing that fathers and sons talk about. Father passes on to their sons an appreciation for sports, knowing what team to root for and an appreciation for good hard work and doing your best.
The only thing a father can pass on to his son concerning understanding women is this little bit of wisdom; “Son, nobody has ever figured out women.” This may be why God created Adam before he created Eve.
In the first few years of our marriage, I made a dreadfully wrong assumption. I assumed that being married to me was enough. After all, at the wedding altar we took each other for “better or worse.” She fulfilled the “better,” and I, of course, brought up the “worse.” In a marriage, everybody has his or her responsibility and that was mine.
But in that first year of marriage I did something wrong. I cannot remember what it was now; I probably did not know what it was then. That is the way it is with men. They have no idea what is going on around them. But something I did, or maybe it was something I did not do, had created a little bit of tension.
It was close to Valentine’s Day and I happened to be shopping at the supermarket when I spied a very large red heart shaped box of chocolates. Normally, I would not have given it a second thought because it was quite expensive. It certainly was beyond our modest budget at the time. However, something came over me that I could not quite explain. In a flash of impulse, I put the box of chocolate in my basket, and purchased it.
It was not quite Valentine’s Day so I hid it and waited for the day to approach.
Finally, the anticipated moment had come and I presented my wife with the biggest box of chocolate she had ever seen up to that time. I do not know what happened, even to this day, but that box of chocolate canceled out everything I had done wrong up to that point.
In fact, she still has that Valentine box that she uses to hold her jewelry. It is a constant reminder to me that chocolate has a magical quality to it when it comes to women.
I have no idea how chocolate solves problems; I just know that it works. Possibly, one bite of that chocolate immediately goes to the brain erasing forever, whatever her husband did the preceding 12 months. No husband knows how it works, but why fool around with something that does work?
This is precisely the way forgiveness works. I do not know how it works I just know it works.
“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.” (1 John 1:9).
God’s forgiveness never misses its mark, either.

Boys All Over America Being Empowered by Principal Kafele’s “Message to Your Son” Series

0

Boys All OverJERSEY CITY, N.J.(BlackNews.com) — Renowned educator, Principal Baruti Kafele states emphatically that he has witnessed over the years enough mothers crying over their sons whom they have either lost to the streets or are slowly but surely losing to the streets. In an effort to help mothers rescue their sons and to in turn help them to develop the willingness to strive for excellence, he launched a YouTube videa series entitled, Message to Your Son. It is comprised of over 150 short 3-– 6 minute “no frills, no edits, one-take” video clips where Principal Kafele speaks directly to boys of all ages and ethnicities about living productive lives.
A recipient of the National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE) Hall of Fame Award, Principal Kafele knows something about motivating boys, particularly those labeled at-risk. As a former 14-year “Turnaround High School and Middle School Principal” in Newark and East Orange, N.J., he understood clearly the power in daily positive messages to students toward creating positive attitudes. He therefore took this approach to leading schools and applied it to the development of Message to Your Son. Topics include but are not limited to: attitude, goal setting, planning, purpose, vision, determination, self-esteem, self-respect, decision-making, school behavior, bullying, distractions, temptations and so much more in an effort to motivate, educate and empower boys for success.
Parents are encouraged to watch these videos along with their sons daily and to engage them in discussions over the topics viewed. Educators are also encouraged to show these videos in their schools and classrooms (girls love them too) as often as possible and to engage the boys, or all of the students in follow up discussions. All content is most appropriate for school.
Message to Your Son is now 150+ videos strong, with a new video posted every Saturday morning. To view the entire series, please visit Principal Kafele’s website at www.PrincipalKafele.com and click the link to “Principal Kafele’s Message to Your Son” on his home page which will take you directly to his YouTube channel.

The Greatest Love Of All

0

GODS LOVEby Rich Deem
Special to the Times
In her 1985 song, “Greatest Love Of All,” Whitney Houston claimed that the greatest love of all was to love yourself: “Learning to love yourself. It is the greatest love of all.” However, the Bible has a different idea about what is the greatest love.
According to Jesus, love that people give (to each other and to God) fulfills all the commandments of God.According to the Bible, the love of God is described as being great and almost beyond comprehension. God’s love is compared to the height of the heavens above the earth and even beyond.
The greatest human love
Jesus defined the greatest love from a human perspective, as recorded in the Gospel of John:
Greater love has no one than this, that he lay down his life for his friends. (John 15:13)
Jesus Himself fulfilled this greatest love by dying for us so that we could be forgiven of all our sins and have fellowship with God:
But God demonstrates His own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8)
This example of the extreme love of God is to apply to those who follow Jesus Christ.
This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers. (1 John 3:16)
Laying down one’s own life is not the message of the world, and would be considered from an evolutionary paradigm to be stupid. Even in other religions, the giving of one’s life is not encouraged. As an employee of a Jewish hospital (Cedars-Sinai Medical Center), I have had many opportunities to go to seminars about medical ethics and Judaism. For example, here is an example from Orthodox Judaism:
Two men are stranded in the desert. One man has water, while the other has none. There is enough water for one man to make it to safety. However, if they share the water, they will both die before they could get to safety. What does the man with the water do?
The rabbinical answer is that the man with the water should take the water to save his own life. Of course, the Christian answer is that the man with the water should give it to the other man and give up his own life. I discussed this specific example with my Jewish supervisor, who is married to a rabbinical scholar. Apparently, it made quite an impression, since the topic was discussed by the husband and wife, who reported their conversation back to me. When confronted with the differences between Judaism and Christianity, both thought that Christianity took the higher moral ground.
It is the love of God in Christ that allows His disciples to voluntarily give up their own lives for others. You, too, can experience this love and pass it on to others.
For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord. (Romans 8:38-39)

CHICAGO, Ill. – Grammy® Award-winning songwriter and Inspired People recording artist Pastor Charles Jenkins and
his electrifying choir Fellowship Chicago storms its way into the Top Ten of Billboard Magazine’s Gospel airplay chart for the fourth week with a triumphant #6* placement for the rousing radio smash “WAR,” a New Orleans Brass Band-flavored call-to-action. “War is a victory anthem, fight song, and an inspirational prayer,” says Jenkins. “I believe everyone is fighting for victory in one way or another every day. Sometimes life is like a boxing ring and Satan brings new and often multiple opponents into our lives. This song is a reminder of who you are, whose you are, and calls on your faith, strength, and hope in God. It is a reminder not to settle for defeat when victory is an option.” Chicago’s Spin Artist agency just cut a slick “WAR” music video that begins rotating on Aspire TV and other video outlets this month.
Pastor Jenkins is in the midst of planning a promotional tour to launch his sophomore album “Any Given Sunday” (Inspired People/Motown Gospel) that releases March 17th with guest appearances from Rev. An established Grammy® Award-winning songwriter and pastor of the 8,000-member Fellowship Chicago church, Pastor Jenkins burst into the national spotlight when he and the Fellowship Chicago choir’s radio debut “Awesome” topped Billboard Magazine’s Hot Gospel Songs chart at #1 for 22 weeks in 2012. It also won a BMI Award in 2014 for over 50,000 lifetime radio spins. The album “Best of Both Worlds” debuted at #1 holding the spot for three weeks on Billboard’s Gospel Album sales chart, garnered five Stellar awards, a historic win for a new artist, and featured one more chart single, “I Will Live.”

Jesus Was Tempted

And Jesus being full of the Holy Ghost returned from Jordan, and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness,
Being forty days tempted of the devil. And in those days he did eat nothing: and when they were ended, he afterward hungered.
And the devil said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, command this stone that it be made bread.
And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, That man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God.
And the devil, taking him up into an high mountain, shewed unto him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time.
And the devil said unto him, All this power will I give thee, and the glory of them: for that is delivered unto me; and to whomsoever I will I give it.  If thou therefore wilt worship me, all shall be thine.
And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve.
And he brought him to Jerusalem, and set him on a pinnacle of the temple, and said unto him, If thou be the Son of God, cast thyself down from hence:  For it is written, He shall give his angels charge over thee, to keep thee:  And in their hands they shall bear thee up, lest at any time thou dash thy foot against a stone.
And Jesus answering said unto him, It is said, Thou shalt not tempt the Lord thy God.
And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season.
And Jesus returned in the power of the Spirit into Galilee: and there went out a fame of him through all the region round about.
And he taught in their synagogues, being glorified of all.
And he came to Nazareth, where he had been brought up: and, as his custom was, he went into the synagogue on the sabbath day, and stood up for to read.  And there was delivered unto him the book of the prophet Esaias. And when he had opened the book, he found the place where it was written,
The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he hath anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor; he hath sent me to heal the brokenhearted, to preach deliverance to the captives, and recovering of sight to the blind, to set at liberty them that are bruised,
To preach the acceptable year of the Lord.
And he closed the book, and he gave it again to the minister, and sat down. And the eyes of all them that were in the synagogue were fastened on him.
And he began to say unto them, This day is this scripture fulfilled in your ears.  And all bare him witness, and wondered at the gracious words which proceeded out of his mouth. And they said, Is not this Joseph’s son?

Moving From Insult to Rejoicing
Rev. Joseph R. Reid
A cocky youth pastor wanted to share with young members about self-esteem, so he asked anyone who thought they were stupid to stand up. One kid stood up. The youth pastor was surprised. He didn’t think anyone would stand up so he asked him, “Why did you stand up?” He answered, “I didn’t want to leave you standing up by yourself.” The youth pastor could respond by taking offense but instead he rejoiced.
In 1954 the Supreme Court passed a decision in Brown v. Board of Education, which stated that separate school facilities are inherently unequal and ordered school integration. Southern whites resisted the decision and several southern governors led the way in preventing integration. Here in Alabama, mob rule and violence was used to keep Autherine Lucy, an alumnus of Miles College from enrolling as a graduate student in the University of Alabama. February 3, 1956, Lucy enrolled as a graduate student, becoming the first African American ever admitted to a white public school or university in the state of Alabama. On the third day of classes, a hostile mob assembled to prevent Lucy attending classes. The police were called but that evening the University suspended Lucy on the grounds that it could not provide a safe environment. Lucy and her attorneys filed suit to have the suspension overturned. However, this suit was not successful and was used as justification for her permanent expulsion. University officials claimed that Lucy had slandered the university. The University of Alabama finally overturned her expulsion in 1980, and in 1992, she earned her Master’s degree in Elementary Education from the University that she had applied to decades earlier. Fifty years later 12.6 percent of 31,000 mostly white students are Black. Two years ago Black women at white Southern schools fought for membership in one of the last bastion of segregation, all white sororities – they are still fighting for that right today.
What happened to Lucy occurred throughout the country during the fight for Civil Rights. These abuses gave many of our ancestors a direct understanding of what Jesus meant when He said, “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you,” But enduring abuse for the sake of what is right and in Jesus’ name is what being a Christian is all about. Jesus says, “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.” When we are able to overcome insults and rejoice, we move to the triumph found in the Lord, we come to know what it means to turn the other cheek and to serve. Through Christ’s example we learn perseverance, keeping our eyes upon the prize. That prize is found on earth as well as in Heaven. It is the higher calling of Jesus to serve Him, share the Gospel and help others. Like that old Black American Gospel song says,“Keep your hands on that plow, hold on.”

APOSTASY
Apostasy is a word you never hear mentioned in today’s churches, but it should frequently be explained, because there is a growing problem in the Body of Christ. You may be thinking – should it be mentioned, and if you are thinking that, you may have a good reason, but it most certainly should be, because most church people are walking in complete defiance of the Word without knowledge.
May I explain? Did you say, please do? Okay, you see the church people have become so worldly minded until anything goes. Their interest is more in football, card playing, and secular music and lyrics – just to name a few – than in seeking the presence of the Lord Jesus, whom they say they seek to please. Drifting is a deadly nullifying.
Let us look at Scripture and see what it says about apostasy. It will explain in detail the danger of following that path in II Timothy 3: 1-9, which talks about the last days, which is the present time – people would be lovers of themselves, filled with boasting, and covetous, that is money lovers, false accusers, proud, blasphemers, and disobedient to parents, as well as unthankful. Society is full of peace-breakers, and liars. Many Church people have taken on the spirits of the world, and it is difficult to distinguish them.  Do you wonder why? Yes, they have not invited the presence of the Lord in during their private time nor when they congregate in the House of the Lord.  In order to live this Christian life, you must do what Jesus said do in Luke 9:23, “He who will follow me, let him deny himself, take up your cross daily and follow me.” This is a call for those who love the Lord and want to obey Him. Will you obey?
