Rock City Completes Phase II at Deer Park

0

LOOKOUT MOUNTAIN, Ga. – A new phase is complete at Rock City’s Deer Park to expand its fallow deer habitat. The new addition is connected to the original phase and can be used to gather select deer to continue keeping them healthy. With the new phase finished, the deer have an extended home containing a great deal of vegetation they can live off of.
Rock City is currently the home of nine fallow deer, with one female deer yet to be named. A social media contest is currently underway to name her, via Rock City’s Facebook page(www.facebook.com/seerockcitygardens) and Instagram (www.instagram/seerockcity).
The fallow deer have a total of three breeds that can all be seen in the herd at Rock City, including the rare white fallow deer. These deer are able to live off their natural habitat at the park, with additional food supplemented such as corn, one of their favorites.
Rock City is dedicated to cultivating its environmental stewardship by sustaining its partnership with Amicalola Deer Park. Serving the needs of 150 rescued animals, primarily sika and fallow deer, Amicalola Deer Park is a place of retreat, restoration, recreation, preservation and conservation.
Rock City is one of the South’s most popular natural attractions. Known for its unique geological and botanical wonders, the enchanted, 4,100-foot walking trail is a true marvel of nature featuring massive ancient rock formations, a 140-foot waterfall that cascades down Lookout Mountain and the Swing-A-Long Bridge that spans nearly 200 feet.

IRS Starts 2015 Tax Season

0

IRS VolunteersWASHINGTON — The Internal Revenue Service announced the on-time opening of the nation’s 2015 filing season and highlighted a growing array of online services, including features that help taxpayers understand how the Affordable Care Act will affect them at tax time, along with the availability of the Free File program.
Taxpayers have until Wednesday, April 15, 2015 to file their 2014 tax returns and pay any tax due. The IRS expects to receive about 150 million individual income tax returns this year. Like each of the past three years, more than four out of five returns are expected to be filed electronically.
The IRS Free File program, available at IRS.gov, has opened for taxpayers, and the IRS began accepting and processing all tax returns on Tuesday, Jan. 20.
This year’s return will include new questions to incorporate provisions of the Affordable Care Act (or ACA). The majority of taxpayers – more than three out of four – will simply need to check a box to verify they have health insurance coverage. For the minority of taxpayers who will have to do more, IRS.gov/aca features useful information and tips regarding the premium tax credit, the individual shared responsibility requirement and other tax features of the ACA.
“Our employees will be working hard again this season to help the nation’s taxpayers,” IRS Commissioner John Koskinen said. “We encourage people to use the tools and information available on IRS.gov, particularly given the long wait times we anticipate on our phone lines. As always, taxpayers can benefit by filing electronically.”
Koskinen announced that taxpayers can begin preparing their returns using the Free File system on Friday, Jan. 16. Available only at IRS.gov, Free File offers two filing options:

·         Brand-name software, offered by IRS’ commercial partners to about 100 million individuals and families with incomes of $60,000 or less; or
·         Online fillable forms, the electronic version of IRS paper forms available to taxpayers at all income levels and especially useful to people comfortable with filling out their own returns.

E-file, when combined with direct deposit, is the fastest way to get a refund. More than three out of four refund recipients now choose direct deposit. People who e-file make fewer mistakes, and it costs nothing for those who choose Free File.

In all, 14 software companies will be participating in this year’s Free File program. Additional details about the specific Free File offerings will be available on the front page of IRS.gov when Free File becomes available.

Taxpayers who purchase their own software can also choose e-file, and most paid tax preparers are now required to file their clients’ returns electronically. In addition to Free File, commercial software companies also are currently available for taxpayer use.

The IRS will begin accepting and processing all returns – whether e-file, Free File or paper tax returns – on Jan. 20.

Like last year, the IRS expects to issue more than nine out of 10 refunds within 21 days. Again, the fastest way to get a refund is to e-file and choose direct deposit. It takes longer to process paper returns and in light of IRS budget cuts resulting in a smaller staff, it will likely take an additional week or more to process paper returns meaning that those refunds are expected to be issued in seven weeks or more.
Koskinen said, “If you haven’t already, you should consider filing electronically. It’s fast, accurate and the best way to get your refund quickly.”
Koskinen also strongly encouraged taxpayers to visit IRS.gov as a first stop for information ranging from the status of their refunds to basic tax information. He cautioned taxpayers that recent budget reductions will mean long wait times on the phone, routinely topping 30 minutes.
Information on IRS.gov and using tax software and e-file are among the options that can help people with questions about the individual shared responsibility requirement included in the Affordable Care Act, which is new to the Form 1040 this filing season.

Health Care Basics
The Affordable Care Act requires that a taxpayer and each member of their family either has qualifying health insurance coverage for each month of the year, qualifies for an exemption , or makes an individual shared responsibility payment when filing their federal income tax return. Some moderate-income taxpayers may also qualify for financial assistance to help cover the cost of health insurance purchased through the Health Insurance Marketplace. Taxpayers will fall into one or more of the following categories:

•    Check the box. Most taxpayers will simply check a box on their tax return to indicate that each member of their family had qualifying health coverage for the whole year. No further action is required.

Qualifying health insurance coverage includes coverage under most, but not all, types of health care coverage plans. Taxpayers can use the chart on IRS.gov/aca to find out if their insurance counts as qualifying coverage.

•    Exemptions. Taxpayers may be eligible to claim an exemption from the requirement to have coverage.  Eligible taxpayers need to complete the new IRS Form 8965, Health Coverage Exemptions, and attach it to their tax return.  Taxpayers must apply for some exemptions through the Health Insurance Marketplace. However, most of the exemptions are easily obtained from the IRS when filing a return.

·         Individual Shared Responsibility Payment. Taxpayers who do not have qualifying coverage or an exemption for each month of the year will need to make an individual shared responsibility payment with their return for choosing not to purchase coverage. Examples and information about figuring the payment are available on the IRS Calculating the Payment page.

·         Premium Tax Credit.  Taxpayers who bought coverage through the Health Insurance Marketplace should receive Form 1095-A, Health Insurance Marketplace Statement, from the Marketplace by early February. This form should be saved because it has important information needed to complete a tax return.

If the Form 1095-A is not received by early February, contact the Marketplace where coverage was purchased. Do not contact the IRS because IRS telephone assistors will not have access to this information.
Taxpayers who benefited from advance payments of the premium tax credit must file a federal income tax return. These taxpayers need to reconcile those advance payments with the amount of premium tax credit they’re entitled to based on their actual income. As a result, some people may see a smaller or larger tax refund or tax liability than they were expecting.  Use IRS Form 8962, Premium Tax Credit (PTC), to calculate the premium tax credit and reconcile the credit with any advance payments.
The IRS has set up a special section at IRS.gov/aca with more information about the Affordable Care Act and the 2014 income tax return.

Alternatively, low-and moderate-income taxpayers can get help meeting this health-care requirement and filing their return for free by visiting one of the more than 12,000 community-based tax help sites staffed by more than 90,000 volunteers that participate in the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance and Tax Counseling for the Elderly (VITA/TCE) programs. To find the nearest site, use the VITA/TCE Site Locator on IRS.gov.
The IRS also reminded taxpayers that a trusted tax professional can also provide helpful information about the health care law. A number of tips about selecting a preparer and national tax professional groups is available on IRS.gov.
The IRS urges all taxpayers, especially those claiming the premium tax credit, to make sure they have all their year-end statements in hand before they file their return. This includes Forms W-2 from employers, Forms 1099 from banks and other payers, and, for those claiming the premium tax credit, and Form 1095-A from the Marketplace. Doing so will help avoid refund delays and the need to file an amended return later.

ASU Professor Writes Chapter in New Book About ‘Fat Acceptance’

ASU Professor daufin pic Alabama State University communications professor Dr. Rev. E.K. Daufin is the author of a chapter in a new book, “The Politics of Size: Perspectives From the Fat Acceptance Movement,”  published by Praeger Publishers Inc.
Daufin’s chapter is “Black Women in Fat Activism.”
The book supplies readers a frank overview of the issues surrounding how to deal with the many levels of discrimination against fat people – and reframes the discussion about obesity from a “diet and weight loss industry driven medical issue” to a social and political one.
Daufin, a national expert about weight as well as race, gender and class in the media, was invited by the editor of the book to write the chapter after seeing Daufin’s works on the subject. The chapter itself takes a look at what Black women face as a result of weight stigma.
“Eighty to 90 percent of any person’s weight is caused by genetics. The reasons for the higher obesity rate for African-American women are also genetic, along with other factors including socioeconomics and the environment,” Daufin said. “But even more women of color are joining the front lines of activism in changing the unintentional racist ‘war on obesity’ to the ‘war on weight stigma’ instead.”
Daufin said the essays in the book serve to correct misinformation about obesity and fat people that is commonly accepted by the general public, such as the idea that “fat” and “healthy” are mutually exclusive. Subject matter covered includes fat-friendly workplace policies; fat-dating experiences; and the intersections of being fat and also a person of color, a person with disabilities, a transgender person, or a member of another sub-group of society.
An educator, performance artist and a social activist, Daufin is the founder of Love Your Body; Love Yourself workshops. Her work has been published in several academic journals, newspapers and magazines, and she has a chapter in three other anthologies. Daufin also has been featured on radio and television programs. She is a columnist for the international nonprofit Association for Size and Health Diversity’s online “HAES® Matters.”
Daufin graduated from The Ohio State University where she earned her Ph.D. in mass communication and film.

THE COOKIES ARE COMING!

Girl Scout Media Mavens BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama (GSNCA) will begin learning the lasting skills that will guide them throughout their lives as the 2015 Girl Scout Cookie Program kicks off Friday, February 6th. On this date girls will have cookies on-hand to sell immediately, and many will have cookie booths set up at retail stores throughout North-Central Alabama. The public can find cookies by searching for a booth sale on the Cookie Locator at girlscoutcookies.org or downloading the Girl Scout Cookie Finder Mobile App for Apple and Android.
Girl Scouts of North-Central Alabama are offering two new varieties of cookies this year. Rah-Rah Raisins are hearty oatmeal cookies with plump raisins and Greek yogurt-flavored chunks.
Toffee-tastic are rich, buttery cookies packed with golden toffee bits bursting with flavor. And guess what? Toffee-tastic is gluten free!
Girl Scouts will also offer all-time favorites: Thin Mints, Samoas, Trefoils, Tagalongs, Do-si-dos and Savannah Smiles. Each box sells for $3.50. All eight varieties of Girl Scout Cookies contain zero grams of trans fat. Girl Scout cookies are a low-sodium treat, and some varieties weigh in at only 28 calories (Savannah Smiles) and 40 calories (Thin Mints) per cookie!
You can also purchase cookies as part of the Cookies for the Troops campaign, where you can have your cookies sent overseas to service members. GSNCA will also participate in the ‘Buy 5’ campaign. For every five packages a customer purchases, they receive one Buy 5 promotion card. At the end of the cookie sale, two customers will be drawn to win five cases of cookies.
Through the Girl Scout Cookie Program, girls take part in the largest girl-run business in the world. They learn the 5 Skills: goal setting, decision making, money management, people skills and business ethics. They make a plan and decide where their cookie money will go.
All the revenue earned – every penny after paying the baker – stays with GSNCA. Councils use cookie revenue to supply essential services to troops, groups and girls, such as providing program resources and communication support, training adult volunteers and conducting events. As part of their experience in any Girl Scout product sale program, girls can earn official Girl Scout awards at every level of Girl Scouting, including cookie and financial literacy badges and the annual Cookie Activity Pin.

AAA Alabama Hosts Annual Travel Show

AAA_LogoTerrific opportunity to learn more about travel destinations with no obligation

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – With Valentine’s Day, Spring Break, and the summer vacation season just around the corner, AAA Alabama is hosting their annual Travel Show to help travelers find the best possible deal.
The Travel Show will be held on Saturday, January 31st, from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m., at the Cahaba Grand Conference Center on Highway 280 in Hoover. Admission is free to everyone, and is open to members and non-members alike.  Free seminars are offered every 45 minutes on a variety of topics/destinations and door prizes will be given away every half hour.
“This is a great time to do some research about potential vacation destinations or book a vacation at a discounted price,” said Clay Ingram, AAA Alabama Spokesperson. “There is no obligation to purchase anything and with all of our free seminars, it is a terrific opportunity to talk to specific vendors and travel experts to learn about a lot of different destinations.”
There will be 60-plus travel vendors, hotels, cruise lines, and tour providers participating in the event.  A few of the vendors include: Disney, Universal Studios, Sandals Resorts, Celebrity Cruises, Holland America Line, Princess Cruises, and Royal Caribbean International.  Special pricing opportunities will also be available exclusively at the show.
AAA Alabama offers several tips for vacation planners as the summer season approaches:

Do your research – or have someone do it for you. Those who want to pick up last-minute bargains should probably get in the habit of looking for them on a regular basis. Web sites like AAA.com have sections devoted to last-minute bargains, or you can ask your travel agent to alert you to your preferred deals. Travel agents are great resources for both plan-ahead and last-minute travel because they can advise clients of a good deal when it comes up. In most cases, travel agents don’t charge for their services, and using them can save you money and time.

Take advantage of special promotions. Rebates, upgrades and credits abound in the travel industry. Travel providers want you to book early, so incentives are more plentiful for “early birds.” The key to getting an upgrade or rebate is to know about it, and a reliable travel agent or travel Web site can be an excellent resource.

The lowest price isn’t always the best deal. Make sure before you book your trip that your travel providers have a good reputation. Take advantage of AAA’s lodging ratings, available to members in complimentary TourBooks® and on AAA.com, to make sure your accommodations are in a quality hotel, motel or inn.

Consider trip insurance for big-ticket vacations. An unexpected illness or tragedy can force you to postpone or cancel travel either before or during your trip. Trip insurance protects you financially in many of those instances, since most tours and cruises are non-refundable. Several levels of insurance are available – ask your travel agent.

Protection Prayer

0

Prayers of ProtectionHeavenly Father, I bow in worship and praise before You. I cover myself with the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ as my protection. I surrender myself completely and unreservedly in every area of my life to You.  I take a stand against all the workings of satan that would hinder me in my prayer life.  I address myself only to the true and living God and refuse any involvement of satan in my prayer.  satan, I command you in the Name of the Lord Jesus Christ, to leave my presence with all your demons.  I bring the blood of the Lord Jesus Christ between us.  I resist all the endeavors of satan and his wicked spirits to rob me of the will of God.  I choose to be transformed by the renewing of my mind.  I pull down every thought that exalts itself against the knowledge of Christ and loose into myself a sound mind, the mind of Christ. (Amen)
THE WORD
(THERE IS POWER IN THE WORD)
(Father), I stand on Your Word. The enemy is driven out from before me, above me, around me, and below me, from my home, workplace, church and its ministries, children, and loved ones, from my works and labors, land, and my presence.  I declare that he is not able to stand against me, and his works are taken captive and destroyed.  No weapon formed against me will prosper, for the Spirit of the Lord shall raise a standard against them.  I declare all of these things accomplished by Your Word.  (Amen)
THE NAME
Father, Your Word says that no weapon formed against me shall prosper (Isaiah 54:17). Therefore I declare that no weapon formed against me prospers this day or any day to come in Jesus’ Name. Your Word says that trouble will not arise a second time (Nahum 1:9). Therefore I declare that satan cannot make trouble for me again, in this manner, as he did in the past in Jesus’ Name. Amen
THE BLOOD
Lord Jesus, I confess to You all of my sins this day, yesterday and every day past. I repent and renounce them, those known and unknown, those of omission and commission, in what I have done and in what I have failed to do. I lay down at Your feet all of the sins of the flesh, the tongue, and of the heart, and all unholy thoughts and actions. Thank You, lord, for shedding Your precious blood for me.
