2015 Nissan Rogue

0

CHERYL NISSAN ROUGEby Cheryl Eldridge
With its excellent fuel economy, premium character and available three-row seating, the all-new Nissan Rogue is an excellent choice for shoppers desiring a comfortable and functional small crossover SUV.
There is an upscale look and feel; great fuel economy; optional third-row seating; advanced safety options; and versatile interior storage.
The 2015 Rogue’s cabin is typically Nissan, with attractively illuminated instrumentation, quality materials, soft-touch surfaces and several infotainment and connectivity features. The front seats – leather-clad in SL models – are supportive and comfortable. Front-seat legroom and headroom are good even for tall drivers, and rear-seat legroom has expanded over past models. Two-row Rogues can seat five passengers, while 3-row setups can seat seven. Nissan refers to the 3rd-row perch as “occasional seating,” but I’d lean toward “never,” at least for adults. It’s extremely tight back there. Storage space is ample and includes the slick cargo-system option mentioned above.
With the new suit it slipped on last year, the 2nd-generation Nissan Rogue has a more eye-catching, sophisticated design than its predecessor (which is still available for sale as the less-expensive Rogue Select). The new Rogue stands out with bright metal trim surrounding the side windows, a distinctive V-shaped grille carrying the floating Nissan badge, and even premium-look taillights. Aerodynamics has also improved over the previous model, which contributes to better fuel economy. As a whole, the Rogue’s good looks make it a worthy little brother to the larger and also-dapper Pathfinder 3-row midsize SUV.
The 2015 Nissan Rogue is a compact crossover offered in three trim levels: S, SV and SL. Two-row seating is standard, while a third-row seat is available on S and SV models.
The S starts with 17-inch steel wheels, LED running lights, power mirrors with LED turn signal indicators, cruise control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, air-conditioning with rear climate vents, a 5-inch color infotainment display, a rearview camera, a height-adjustable driver seat, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a four-speaker sound system with iPod/USB connectivity and an auxiliary audio input.
My tester, the  SV adds 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, rear privacy glass, keyless entry/ignition, a six-way power driver seat (with power lumbar), dual-zone automatic climate control, NissanConnect smartphone integration (including Pandora, Facebook and Twitter preparation) and a six-speaker sound system with satellite radio.
The SL gets standard 18-inch alloy wheels, foglights, heated mirrors, roof rails, leather upholstery, heated front seats, voice controls, a 360-degree parking camera system (Around View), a 7-inch touchscreen display, a navigation system and a nine-speaker Bose audio system.
Options are mainly grouped into packages. The Family package adds the third-row seat and run-flat tires (deleting the spare tire) to either the S or SV trim, along with rear privacy glass for the S. The SV Premium package adds the SL’s standard navigation system and 360-degree camera system, and also contributes heated mirrors, a power liftgate, a blind-spot warning system, a lane-departure warning system, a forward collision warning system and “moving object detection” (in conjunction with the 360-degree parking cameras). The SL Premium package features LED headlights, a panoramic sunroof and the safety features from the SV Premium package. The panoramic sunroof is a stand-alone option on the SV.
The 2015 Nissan Rogue is motivated by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 170 hp and 175 pound-feet of torque. A CVT is standard, as is front-wheel drive. All-wheel drive is optional. In Edmunds testing, a Rogue SL AWD hit 60 mph in 9.3 seconds. That’s about average for a compact crossover with the base engine.
Rogues with front-wheel drive return a laudable 28 mpg combined (26 mpg city/33 mpg highway), according to the EPA. Adding all-wheel drive nets the same 28 mpg combined (25 mpg city/32 mpg highway).
On the Safety side, the Rogue comes standard with stability and traction control, four-wheel antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags, a rearview camera and hill-start assist. The all-wheel-drive system adds hill descent control.
Optional safety features (bundled in packages) include a blind-spot warning system, a lane-departure warning system, a forward collision warning system and the Around View camera system. The latter (standard on the SL) provides a top-down 360-degree view of the Rogue’s surroundings when parking, and it can be upgraded with a warning system that notifies you when moving objects enter the camera system’s view.
During Edmunds track testing, a Rogue SL AWD came to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet, an average performance for this segment.
The 2015 Rogue’s interior is notable for its soft-touch materials, generously padded armrests and mature, almost elegant dashboard layout. As on the Altima sedan, Nissan says the Rogue’s front seats are a NASA-inspired “zero gravity” design, and yes, they’re quite comfortable. The second-row seats are split 40/20/40 for greater versatility and feature a full nine inches of fore/aft travel, with reclining seatbacks for further adjustability and comfort. Although the cramped optional third-row seat is only for small children, that’s true of any comparably sized crossover, and the third row gives the Rogue a competitive advantage over most direct rivals.
If you opt for a two-row Rogue, you’ll enjoy a useful cargo dividing system, which includes an adjustable rear cargo area with storage compartments, multilevel shelving capability and a claimed 18 different cargo-carrying configurations. The three-row models aren’t eligible for it, though. Cargo space dwindles to 9.4 cubic feet behind the third row, but both rear seating rows fold flat to open up the Rogue’s maximum 70-cubic-foot hauling capacity, which is one of the bigger capacities you’ll find in this class.
The cost of my tester was $28,170.
Until next week, drive safe and buckle up, it’s the law.

2015 Acura TLX

2015 Acura TLX Exterior V6 SH-AWDBy Frank S. washington

PETOSK, Mich. – It has been a long time, more than a decade, since you could put Acura and fun to drive in the same sentence. But the Japanese automaker unleashed its engineers and let them create a car that is indeed a watershed.
The 2015 Acura TLX replaced the Acura TSX and TL. Neither midsize sedan could be called a rousing success. Worse, the TL grew to be almost as big as Acura’s flagship RL sedan, throwing the automaker’s lineup out of whack.
The premium and luxury car markets used to be mannerly, almost sedate, but not anymore. Though it was the first Asian luxury brand in the U.S. market, Acura got left at the gate by Infiniti and Lexus. Now, Mercedes-Benz and BMW have risen to their challenge and worse, from Acura’s viewpoint, there is a resurgent Audi and a rejuvenated Cadillac too boot.
In short, you’ve got to have great product to even call yourself a premium or luxury brand. It seems that Acura’s head honchos have gotten that message and allowed some of the best engineers around to develop the all new TLX.
The midsize luxury sedan’s overall length has been shortened from the old TL but the wheelbase length remained. That means the back seats of the TLX are spacious, comfortable and can carry two full-sized adults with no problem. But the real story here is under the TLX’s hood.
First there was a 2015 Acura TLX with a 2.4-liter four cylinder engine with an eight-speed dual clutch transmission and P-AWS. This engine makes 206 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque.
There was also a TLX with a 3.5-liter V6 that made 290 horsepower and 267 pound-feet of torque. It was mated to a nine speed automatic. The model comes with either P-AWS or Acura’s SH-AWD.
This is where the fun starts. Both engines are normally aspirated. In other words, neither is equipped with a blower. Acura uses gearing to get the most horsepower out of both powerplants. A blower of any type produces more horsepower but it also burns more fuel than a normally aspirated engine.
Thus, the normally aspirated 2.4-liter engine gets 24 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway and 28 mpg combines. The non-blown V6 with two-wheel-drive gets 21 mpg in the city, 34 mpg on the highway and 25 mpg combined; the all-wheel-drive version gets 21 mpg in the city, 31, mpg in the city and 25 mpg combined.
We think the fun comes with Acura’s P-AWS system. It stands for precision all-wheel steer. In other words, the back wheels turn slightly in the same direction or in the opposite direction as the front wheels turn depending on speed. During emergency braking they will also pinch inwards.
This system gives the TLX similar driving attributes as rear-wheel-drive luxury sport sedans. Traveling on the twisting turning state highways in Northern Michigan, we had the six-cylinder with P-AWS. It was like a fly caught on flypaper the way the car stuck to the road under aggressive driving. It took extreme speed in the curves to get the tires to squeal. It was fun to drive.
Acura’s SH-AWD system is available only on the V6 TLX. It is what Acura called super handling all-wheel-drive. In a nutshell, not only will the system send torque fore or aft as needed, it will all also send it from the left to right wheels.
Yes, luxury is about design, engineering and technology. But where it is conveyed most is in the interior. The TLX’s interior looked good and it felt good. It had a soft touch, a one piece instrument panel upper cover and alloy with wood grain trim along with leather seat trim.
In a phrase, the interior of the TLX matched its stylish exterior. Plus, it featured all the bells and whistles: heated front seats, Bluetooth, voice command, a smart key, a navigation system with touch screen, satellite radio and a 455-watt, 10-speaker audio system.
There was more optional equipment but the absence of a gear shift lever on the column or in the center console was most intriguing. The Acura TLX has digital buttons on the center console to shift the gears or what Acura called an electronic gear selector. It takes a while to get used to but it was easily learned.
The 2015 TLX qualified as an entry level luxury sports sedan. Its styling was smart, its interior sumptuous, handling was sports-car like, power was ample, driving was fun and the car was comfortable.
The 2.4-liter four-cylinder starts at $30,995 and the 3.5 cylinder V6 starts at $35,220.

Internet Evangelism: The Final Frontier (Mr. Ronald Pace)

0

Mr. Ronald PaceBy: Charlene Medley
Industrial Engineer, Teacher, Author and Minister are four hats worn at some time by Mr. Ronald Pace. He says he is most proud of his Minister of the Gospel of Jesus Christ hat.
“I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Jesus Christ because it is the power of God unto salvation,” said Mr. Ronald Pace with a smile.
During the summer months and holidays when Mr. Pace is away from the classroom, he performs outreach ministry at The Foundry located in the heart of Bessemer, Alabama.
He explained, “The Foundry is  an outreach center for the homeless and poor. I’ve been affiliated with The Foundry for three years.” He said every Tuesday and Thursday he spends about three hours cleaning up, serving and teaching a 45 minute Practical Living Bible Class consisting of between 60-70 men and sometimes women.
“My contact person is  Foundry Spiritual Leader and Director  Miss Annie Ridgeway. She is truly a woman of God,” Mr. Pace added.
Along with  his outreach ministry at The Foundry, Mr. Pace said for over five years he has taught Biblical Theology (Old and New Testaments) to approximately 200 ministers at The Worship Center in Trussville, Alabama.
In addition to group setting Theological teaching, Mr. Pace spreads the Gospel through other forms of media. “I am on Facebook and Twitter, “ he said.
“My Thesis at Birmingham Theological Seminary was “Internet Evangelism.” This is a whole new genre of communicating the Gospel and reaching the lost,” Mr. Pace explained.
He modestly said because of Facebook and Twitter, he probably reaches in excess of 2 million people easily. “God gets all of the glory,” he emphasized.
“For eight years, 365 days a year, I have been sending inspirational text messages to over 700 people every day.”
Mr. Pace said although via the Internet and text messages he reaches a lot of people, the texting began with two people.
He explained, “My texting was born out of a deep desire to talk to my two children, Kierra and Destin Pace who were teenagers at the time. They were home. In the same room. Texting each other. I was shut out. So, I began texting messages to my children. I would send the messages early in the morning so that they would realize how much the Lord loved them and that their daddy was thinking about them and loved them, also.”
Whenever Mr. Pace meets people, he asks if he can text them and share God’s Word. “People tell me how much the texts bless them.”
One lady said she was blessed by a text I sent because it reminded her of a song that they used to sing in church when she was a little girl.  That text was,“ Woke up this morning with my mind stayed on JESUS! Woke up this morning with my mind stayed on the LORD!”  Heb. 12:2.
Mr. Pace said texting God’s Word to people has helped him. “My insight into The Word has changed.  I hope to inspire other ministers to use social media for Evangelism also.”
There are times when Mr. Pace uses the pen. He is the author of a book that he wrote in 2011 titled “Cain is Able”. “The book explains that God communicates to us through a still small voice in our head. But the struggle is, there’s also a loud voice in our head that we must shut out because it is not the voice of the Lord,” he explained.
He continued, “I was in a bad automobile accident in 2003 and writing the book was very cathartic. I was a broken man and I had no one to depend on except Jesus.  Because of doubt, unbelief and fear, I did not think I could start or finish the book.”
He said once again, it was his children, Kierra and Destin who encouraged him to complete the book.
“They came over one summer and asked if I’d finished “Cain is Able.”  I was inspired to finish the book for my children. I want to leave a legacy for them.”
Mr. Pace said he is now in the process of writing his second book titled “False Prophets-An Analysis of Pimps in the Pulpit” which should be out by 2017.

Watts, director of the Birmingham Diocese’s Office of Black Catholic Ministry, was the speaker.

The Office of Black Catholic Ministry (OBM) in the Birmingham Diocese serves hundreds in particular and thousands in general and was the subject of Adult Education at Our Lady of Sorrows Church in Homewood. James Watts, OBM director presented An Overview: Birmingham’s Black Catholic Ministry on October 19.
The OBM was established in 1983 by Bishop Joseph Vath. Watts said it is dedicated to proclaim the good news of Jesus Christ in an Afrocentric and spirit-filled manner through education, advocacy, and evangelization. It also seeks to promote racial harmony. Watts performs outreach, organizational, and administrative duties for a consortium of ordained ministers, religious, and administrators from African American parishes.
Watts said that the diocese’s Consortium of African American Parishes meets monthly and explained that it was created to help white priests relate to their Black parishioners. He said the parishes are Our Lady of Fatima (Titusville), Holy Family (Ensley), Sacred Heart of Jesus (Collegeville), Our Lady Queen of the Universe (Smithfield), St. Mary (Fairfield), All Saints (Anniston), and St. Joseph’s (Huntsville).
The OBM is involved with numerous projects. “One of them is the Martin Luther King prayer breakfast. It will be January the 10th and it will be held at the Cathedral,” Watts said. “The speaker is going to be Father Maurice Nutt. He’s an outstanding speaker.” Another event is a youth leadership retreat in the spring called Kujenga. “We bring in these different kids and they come in for over a weekend,” he said. Watts told the story of one speaker, a dancer, whose story began at the Alabama School of Fine Arts and stretched to New York with encounters with rapper Lil Wayne and professional athletes and ended with her dancing with Beyoncé during a Super Bowl half time show. “The kids heard the story about be who you are, keep your values, don’t get caught up in all this stuff and you can still be successful,” he recalled.
The office is also involved with: the Black & Indian Mission, the Pro Life March, vocations, the Cause for Canonization of the first African American priest Father Augustus Tolton, and the 50th Anniversaries of the Civil Rights Act and the Voting Rights Act.
Watts said the April 27, 2011 tornado outbreak “was a major event that happened that changed the direction of this office.” He showed a video of the destruction and Catholics helping in Pleasant Grove and Pratt City. “I grew up in the Pratt City area,” he said. “It was remarkable to see how the diocese came together and provided quality service,” he said, noting that destruction brought people together.

FROM THE BIBLEby Jerry Kingery

Marvellous Lovingkindness

I have called upon thee, for thou wilt hear me, O God: incline thine ear unto me, and hear my speech.
Shew thy marvellous lovingkindness, O thou that savest by thy right hand them which put their trust in thee from those that rise up against them.
Keep me as the apple of the eye, hide me under the shadow of thy wings,
As for me, I will behold thy face in righteousness: I shall be satisfied, when I awake, with thy likeness.
I will love thee, O LORD my strength.
The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower.
I will call upon the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall  be saved from mine enemies.
The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.
The sorrows of hell compassed me about: the snares of death prevented me.
In my distress I called upon the LORD, and cried unto my God: he heard my voice out of his temple, and my cry came before him, even into his ears.
For I have kept the ways of the Lord, and have not wickedly departed from my God.
For all his judgments were before me, and I did not put away his statutes from me.
I was also upright before him, and I kept myself from mine iniquity.
Therefore hath the LORD recompensed me according to my righteousness, according to the cleanness of my hands in his eyesight.
With the merciful thou wilt shew thyself merciful; with an upright man thou wilt show thyself upright; with the pure thou wilt shew thyself pure; amd with the froward thou wilt shew thyself froward. for thou wilt save the afflicted people; but wilt bring down high looks. For thou wilt light my candle: the LORD my God will enlighten my darkness.
For by thee I have run through s troop; and by my God have I leaped over a wall.
As for God, his way is perfect: the word of the LORD is tried: he is a buckler to all those that trust in him.
For who is God save the LORD? or who is a rock save our God?
It is good that God girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect.
The LORD liveth; and blessed be my rock; and let the God of my salvation be exalted.

Stop Drop and Go

Hey you,
How long are you going to hold on to what happened? Yes, it happened. Yes, it hurt. Yes, it caught you off guard. Yes, it’s (still) causing issues. Yes, it was embarrassing. Yes, it was unfair. But it’s over, which means you can overcome it.
I challenge you to still be concerned, but don’t continue to be consumed. Still handle matters, but don’t stay mad. Still discuss what happened (healthily), but don’t let that define you. Still go through your healing, but don’t get stuck in what hurt you. Still recognize the bruises, but don’t keep placing blame and whatever you do don’t become bitter. Still acknowledge the past, but don’t let people or any problems connected to it keep you there.
Rome wasn’t built in a day. The same is so for your process to redemption, but I double dog dare you to be as focused on the process to healing as you once were on the pain of what happened. The longer you hold on to your pain the longer it hurts. Today, decide to Stop, Drop and Go… on ‘bout your business and get all of the blessings that await you on the “other side.”

Spiritual Meteorologists?

0

Electra Adamsby Electra Adams

The Word of God sometimes offers humanity a forecast we are not spiritually equipped with for cover. We are aware of the change in the atmosphere, the landscape is changing also; we find that as we stroll along in the market place, attitudes are not as polite as they once were. Technology brings man closer together, but the cold love wars drive us further apart. Most of us are at a loss for words, for we never thought things of this nature would manifest in our time. But, they are here!
Question: Has the church truly prepared God’s people for the weather we are about to travel through? Our chief Meteorologist, (Jesus Christ) said to the people standing around: When you see a cloud rise out of the west, immediately you say, There is a shower moving this way; and so it is. And when you feel the south wind blowing, you say, There will be heat; and so it is because it comes to pass. You are hypocrites! You can discern the face of the sky and of the earth; but how is it then, that you do not perceive this time you are living? I declared the end from the beginning; telling you what signs to look for. Why are we so soon removed from truth?
There came one unto Jesus and asked Him…Lord, are there few that be saved? Jesus answered him and said…This is what I will say to “you”, Strive to enter in at the strait gate: for many I say unto you will seek to enter in, and shall not be able. When once the Master of the house is risen up and have  shut the door, and you begin to stand without and to knock at  the door, saying Lord open unto us; and he shall answer and say unto you, I know not where you came from. (Luke 13: 22-25). Jesus urged His people to watch and be prepared for many mind-troubling things shall rise to the earth. Yet, for those in Him, there should be no fear!
Until next week, remember, Jesus is our shelter in the time of all storms! Get out of your comfort zone and meet your destiny!
