Book News four secBy Esther Callens

K. A. Tucker has done it again!  She returns with the third installment of the bestselling series Ten Tiny Breaths. Four Seconds to Lose is the title of this sensational page turner.  Employing a fantastic storyline imbued with engaging characters, Tucker’s latest is a read not to be missed – she is a masterful storyteller.
Tucker wowed fans with Kacey’s story (Ten Tiny Breaths) and floored them with sibling Livie’s tale (One Tiny Lie).  Now with Four Seconds to Lose, Tucker makes an exciting turn by giving readers a look into the life of Cain, Kacey’s former boss.  What’s discovered is far more shocking than imagined.
Cain Ford is an entrepreneur with a big heart. Being in the business he is in, this is an anomaly.  While his hands are more than full owning/operating the city’s most elite gentlemen’s entertainment club, he is also trying to save more than one of his female dancers from their boyfriend, drugs or even themselves.  Distractions are something he doesn’t need nor can he afford. But in walks Charlie Rourke.
To say Charlie Rourke is beautiful is an understatement – she is gorgeous! In dire need of lots of money so she can escape imminent danger, Charlie decides to work at Cain’s club. Although Cain abides by the no emotional attachment clause concerning his employees, he finds himself spellbound by Charlie. She is not interested in the very handsome Cain. Besides, right now romance comes in last place with what she has going on in her life. Eventually, Charlie’s past catches up with her – this happens as she is falling in love with Cain. Both Charlie and Cain find that with their shared love comes a lot of pain. This proves to be more than the unlikely couple bargained for and the chance of survival is sketchy at best.
Four Seconds to Lose is an unforgettable story of surprising twists. K. A. Tucker is a brilliant woman of letters. Her literary skills are amazing. She and her family reside outside of Toronto.

Quote from Congresswoman Terri A. Sewell about Joining with Senator Hank Sanders and Dr. Joe Reed to Appeal to the White House and Senators Shelby and Sessions for more Black Federal Judges in Alabama

In response to the CBC letter, Rep. Terri Sewell stated:
“I was pleased to join my CBC colleagues in sending this letter to President Obama,” said Rep. Sewell. “As black members of congress, we have come together to express our urgent appeal to the President that he work with the Senate and Members of the House of Representatives to identify judicial nominees who reflect his commitment to diversity and the urgent need for appointing qualified African Americans to the federal bench, especially in Alabama.
Our record of black judicial appointments in Alabama is particularly appalling given that African Americans make up 26% of the population in Alabama but currently have only 1 sitting black judge in active status.   In Alabama, there are three federal judicial districts consisting of 14 judgeships and currently there are two vacancies in each of the Middle and Northern districts.  In the 34 years since President Jimmy Carter appointed the first two black judges in Alabama, there are have been 26 federal judicial appointments in the state and only 1 was African American—the appointment of Judge Kallon by President Obama in 2009.
My sincere hope is that the President and Alabama Senators Shelby and Sessions will work together and nominate two qualified African Americans to the open seats in the Northern and Middle districts. This appeal is not about race but fairness. I believe this is a unique opportunity to correct the history of judicial appointments in Alabama.  It is simply a matter of equity.”
In response to joining with Senator Hank Sanders and Dr. Reed to appeal to the White House and Alabama Senators Session and Shelby for need for Black federal judges in Alabama:
“I am grateful to Dr. Reed and Sen. Sanders for traveling to Washington and joining with me to meet with White House and Alabama Senators Shelby and Sessions to make the case for increasing the number of Black federal judges in Alabama.  Both meetings were productive.  The current vacancies present a tremendous opportunity to correct the history in our State and expand diversity on the federal bench in Alabama with well qualified African Americans.”

2014 Passat SEL Premium

0

Cheryl Passatby Cheryl Eldridge

This week’s tester brought elation and music to my ears! It’s fast, sexy and and will probably receive numerous  awards when it comes to gas mileage. Gas mileage for my tester was 24mpg in the city; 34 on the highway. No gas-guzzler at all!
The 2014 Passat SLE Premium was just what the doctor ordered for last week’s drive.
It’s the week after the winter ice storm and it was  time to take care of errands that weren’t run last week.
The Passat SLE Premium is really a nice packaged deal for a family of five. Seating was extreme, not to mention trunk space was unbelievable.
A more fuel-efficient 1.8-liter, turbocharged four-cylinder engine replaces the 2.5-liter five-cylinder on the 2014 Volkswagen Passat SEL model and will gradually be phased in on other trim levels. VW’s Car-Net telematics interface also debuts this year, and most trims, including this year’s new Sport trim level, now have a standard rearview camera.
The 2014 Volkswagen Passat sedan is offered in four broad models broken down by engine (2.5L, 1.8T, TDI and V6), which are further subdivided into a quartet of different trim levels (S, Wolfsburg, SE, Sport and SEL).
The lineup starts with the “S” base model, which comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, automatic headlights, keyless entry, full power accessories, air-conditioning, a six-way manual driver seat with lumbar adjustment, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, cloth upholstery, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, audio controls on the steering wheel, cruise control, a trip computer, Bluetooth with streaming audio and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and an auxiliary audio input.
The Wolfsburg Edition includes the features of the S model and adds unique 16-inch alloy wheels, leatherette (premium vinyl) upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, a six-way power driver seat, heated front seats, satellite radio, a USB/iPod interface and VW’s Car-Net telematics system.
Move up to the SE trim level and you get 17-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors and windshield washer nozzles, a rearview camera, rear-seat air vents, a sliding front armrest, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, upgraded gauges and displays, and an eight-speaker sound system with a touchscreen audio interface.
This year’s new Passat Sport is similar to the SE but has 19-inch wheels, a rear spoiler, steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles (with the automatic transmission) and special exterior and interior styling details.
Options on SE models include a sunroof or the sunroof bundled with a navigation system. On TDI SE models, 18-inch alloy wheels are also added if the sunroof is equipped, and if you equip both the sunroof and the nav system, you get foglights as well. Navigation is not available on V6 SE models, but on the upside, a nine-speaker Fender audio system is included with the optional sunroof.
My tester the  SEL models include all of the above items, including an upgraded navigation system with a larger screen, hard-drive music storage and traffic updates. You also get keyless ignition/entry, remote ignition, eight-way power front seats with driver memory functions, partial leather upholstery, wood-grain interior trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, HD radio and a separate ski pass-through for the 60/40 rear seat.
The strongest engine available on the Passat is a 3.6-liter V6, which churns out 280 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. It’s optional on the SE and SEL, and the DSG automated manual transmission is standard. In Edmunds testing, a Passat 3.6 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds – quick for this class. EPA-estimated fuel economy is 23 combined (20 city/28 highway).
On the safety side,  the 2014 Volkswagen Passat include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front side airbags, and front and rear side curtain airbags. In the event of a crash, the onboard computer automatically cuts off the fuel supply, unlocks the doors and turns on the hazard flashers. A rearview camera is standard on SE and SEL models. VW’s new Car-Net telematics system, standard from the Wolfsburg model on up, includes automatic crash notification, roadside assistance, remote vehicle access, stolen vehicle location and geo-fencing (which allows parents to set boundaries for teenage drivers). A Car-Net smartphone app lets owners control many of these functions on the go.
In government crash testing, the Passat scored a perfect five out of five stars overall, with five stars for frontal impact protection and five stars for side crash protection. Similarly, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the Passat its top score of “Good” for frontal moderate-overlap, side-impact and roof-strength tests. The Passat received the Institute’s second-highest rating of “Acceptable” in the small-overlap frontal-offset crash test.
According to  Edmunds brake testing, a Passat 3.6 SEL came to a stop from 60 mph in about 130 feet, which is longer than average. However, a 2.5 SE and a 1.8 SEL both stopped in a class-average 123 feet, while a TDI SEL needed 124 feet.
Spaciousness is the operative word when describing the Passat’s cabin. Space up front is good as well as in the back for the rear passengers. The quality of the VW Passat’s interior materials is among the best in the class. The overall cabin design is decidedly upscale, while the layout of gauges and controls is refreshingly simple. The premium Fender audio system has been tuned to the acoustics of the interior and will please even hard-core audiophiles. Our only significant complaint relates to the optional navigation systems. The SE models have a lower-cost navigation unit with a small touchscreen display. You get a useful larger screen in the SEL, but we’ve found this higher-end interface slower to process commands whether you’re changing a radio station or entering a destination.
On the highway, all 2014 Volkswagen Passat are impressively quiet and comfortable, snuffing out bumps large and small. Around turns, the steering is reasonably precise and  earns high marks for its relaxed, refined demeanor in everyday driving and the icing on the cake goes to its $31,715 sticker tag.

Until next week, drive safe, buckle up, don’t text and drive, and be a courteous driver.

Positive Maturity, Inc.  Receives Significant Renewed Federal Funding for Senior Volunteer Program in Four Counties

0

Town Hall Meeting Sewell OfficialBIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Positive Maturity, Inc. announced the award of over $300,000 to support senior volunteer activities from the Corporation for National and Community Service (the “Corporation”) to be received over three years.  Positive Maturity Inc. is a United Way Partner that serves older adults in four counties through civic engagement, social services and employment readiness.
The funds were awarded for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (“RSVP”), one of three Senior Corps programs administered nationally by the Corporation, which is a federal agency, and provided locally by Positive Maturity.   RSVP engages older Americans in volunteer opportunities that serve the needs of the volunteer and the community. These volunteers are a critical resource for everything from hunger prevention to natural disaster response.  RSVP volunteers provide over 450,000 volunteer service hours annually to their communities in Jefferson, Shelby, Blount and Walker County.

One of 175 competitive Corporation grants to RSVP programs nationally, the RSVP grant is awarded every three years and requires a 50 percent match.  With the help of an annual grant from the United Way of Central Alabama, Positive Maturity has provided the RSVP program since 1972.

Positive Maturity will hold its first annual fundraising recognition event, The PM Awards, this July.  Fifty individuals over the age of 50 will be recognized for their lifetime achievements, encore careers and civic engagement.  The funds will be used to help match grants and to provide services to more seniors as this population grows rapidly.

As Wendy Spencer, CEO of the Corporation for National and Community Service stated: “Our communities need the talents and skills of all Americans as we continue moving this nation forward. The dedication of RSVP volunteers shows that service benefits not only organizations, but those who serve as well.”

CHOSEN TO CHOOSE
Did you not know you were chosen from the foundation of the world, in order to have the freedom of choice?  Did you say you did not know that?  Yes – that is what I said and I am asking the question as to why was that decision made?  Oh my, well let me inform you that the Lord God, the God who made the world and everything therein from the foundation of this world made you too, and gave you the freedom to choose. That is why you can choose to live for the Lord or not to, but if you choose to have an everlasting life with Him, “you must make that choice now, and live for Him in this life.”
If you choose to live for your enemy, in this life, you will spend eternity in the enemy’s camp, and there  you will burn in fire for all eternity. Did you ask how long is eternity? Yes  that is what I asked. Well, eternity is everlasting; you never die, you are always living, just as you know you are living now.
Let me show you what the Holy Scripture says about life in eternity. Please look with me at Luke 16:19-31, that tells about a rich man and a certain beggar named Lazarus. The rich man lived sumptuously every day. Lazarus desired to have food, as he waited at the rich man’s gate.  This Scripture tells of the choices made in this life. Not because of the rich man’s riches, but that he chose to live in his riches and not choose Jesus, and not that the poor man was poor, but he chose to choose Jesus to be his Saviour, because he knew there was another life after this life on earth – A BEAUTIFUL PLACE WITH JESUS. What is your choice?
It is not about what you have nor where you live, but where do you want to spend eternity.

Birmingham Water Works’ Provide Tips for Protecting Pipes

0
A Winter Storm Warning has been issued for North-Central Alabama through Saturday morning. (File)

Below are tips the Birmingham Water Works Board (BWWB) suggests customers use in preparing their homes during the cold weather and freezing temperatures.

 Tips for Protecting Pipes

  • To prevent frozen pipes, the BWWB recommends letting your hot and cold faucets drip overnight, and opening cabinet doors to allow heat to reach uninsulated pipes under sinks on exterior walls.
  • Locate the water shut-off valve in your home in advance of a water emergency, so you know where to go if a pipe bursts.
  • Disconnect garden hoses and, if practical, use an indoor valve to shut off and drain water from pipes leading to outside faucets.
  • If you’re going away for an extended period of time, be sure to maintain adequate heat inside your home at no lower than 55 degrees.
  • Don’t place a space heater within three feet of anything combustible.
  • Program your local utility contact information into your cell phone now, before you need them.

Tips to prevent water pipes and plumbing from freezing at your home or business:

  • Check your property for all exposed pipes that carry water. This includes outdoor faucets, bibs and valves.
  • Use foam or wrap insulation (available from plumbing supply and home improvement stores) to protect pipes from freezing. Inspect your existing insulation, especially in areas that are exposed to the elements.
  • Temporary insulation (towels, blankets, newspaper, etc.) is better than nothing.
  • Seal all areas that allow cold outside air to get in where pipes are located.
  • Newer homes may have poly piping in the attic which may also need to be insulated.
  • Remove, drain and store outdoor hoses inside.
  • Consider letting cold water drip from a faucet during times of extremely frigid temperatures.
  • If your dishwasher has a timer on it, consider loading it and programming the cycle for the time of night prior to temperatures dropping below freezing. Similar efforts can be made with indoor washing machines, though these may require a manual start.

Tips to protect your irrigation system:

  • Consult your owner/operator manual for how to “winterize” your irrigation system.
  • Insulate the main shut-off valve. Note: If there is none, consider installing a valve as a preventative investment.
  • Insulate all above-ground lines and piping.
  • Consider whether you wish to shut down automatic controller/timer and shut off water supply to system. This may include draining remaining water and reprogramming operations.
  • Consult your owner/operator manual.

Tips for frozen pipes:

  • Be patient. There is no quick remedy.
  • Any area that is exposed is the likely point where a freeze took place. There may also be more than one frozen spot.
  • Pipe(s) will need to gradually warm up. Use something to blow warm air (such as a hair dryer or vacuum cleaner canister) on the frozen section to begin the warming process. Wave the warm air back and forth on the pipe. Keep a faucet in your home in the ‘on’ position during thawing to prevent a slug of water from going through and causing more damage.
  • Do not pour hot water over a frozen pipe or do anything that would cause a rapid rise in temperature (the difference in degrees between that of the frozen pipe and the material used to try to thaw it).
  • Do not use open flame torches to thaw due to risk of fire or further damage to pipes.
  • If there is a burst or water is already leaking from plumbing, turn off the water at the main supply valve to the home or business.

Remember: When you wrap pipes, the water will be cooler in the summer months and warmer in the winter months. You are also conserving water because its running time is now lessened before it reaches the desired temperature.

If you have to turn off the water to your home or business, do so at the shut-off valve, not at the water meter.

If you need the water meter valve turned off, call the BWWB’s Customer Service at (205) 244-4000. Learn where your shut-off valve is located in case you need to turn off the water in an emergency situation.

Locate your water meter. Most are located at the front of a home or business near the sidewalk or at in the rear, such as an alley.

Remove the lid. Behind the meter, on the side closest to your home or business, you should find either a gate valve or a ball valve. To close a gate valve, turn to the right; to close a ball valve, turn 1⁄4 of the way to the right.

If you cannot see or turn the valve, call the BWWB. We will respond as soon as staff is available. Call our Customer Service number at (205) 244-4000.

Call a plumber for assistance if the break is on your property (between the meter and your home or business or if inside your home or business).
