PPT Adriana Galue HeadshotBIRMINGHAM INTERNATIONAL CENTER HONORS WOMEN – The BIC’s Annual International Women’s Day event will be held May 22 at The Club, 6 – 9 p.m.  The event will feature dinner and entertainment while honoring women from the community and around the world.  Each year the BIC presents a Woman of Consequence award to an international woman and this year the BIC is pleased to announce its honoree as Colombian, Adriana Galue.  Based in Boulder, Colorado, Adriana Galue started working with web startups following a career in Neuroscience.  As a part of this event, the general public may nominate Motivating Women that reflect diversity, culture, and achievements.  These women inspire and motivate others to live successfully and significantly by making differences, large and small, every day.  The public can complete the nomination form on the BIC website.

SMALL BUSINESS DISASTER PREPAREDNESS WORKSHOP – Today, HOPE Coalition America, the emergency preparedness and assistance division of Operation HOPE, is hosting a free workshop, 5:30 – 8:30 p.m. at the Boutwell Auditorium, Conference Room, focused on disaster preparedness for small business owners, elected officials, community leaders, and individuals.  LaTanya Millhouse is presenting a Small Business And Recovery Summit to assist small business owners with a Sustainability Plan to increase their chances of staying in business, expand their business, as well as potential new business owners who are looking for resources to get started.  Ms. Millhouse wants to empower, encourage and motive small business owners to be prepared for any disaster, ready for economic and ready to build our community.
PPT LaTanya MilhouseAFFORDABLE HEALTHCARE WORKSHOPS – Free workshops that explain the Affordable Healthcare Act will be held at various Birmingham Public Library locations in March.  Those eligible to enroll may do so, for free.  Open enrollment will end March 31.  Those without health insurance may incur a tax penalty when filing taxes in 2014, which is why officials encourage the public to attend the sessions to learn more about the law.  The sessions will be held on: Monday, March 17, 10 a.m., North Birmingham Library, 2501 31st Avenue North, Wednesday, March 19, 9 a.m., Pratt City Library, 508 Dugan Avenue.  For more information about the law, please visit www.healthcare.gov.  To contact a Birmingham Healthcare outreach specialist, call (205) 439-7217. SUMMER ART CAMP:  ALL ABOUT AFRICA AND JAPANAMANIA! – Camps are available through the summer for grades K5 – 12 that gives campers immediate access to the collection of artworks from around the world at the Birmingham Museum of Art.  Each camper will experiment with new artistic techniques and materials, while making connections between cultures.  (Call the Museum for more.)

MARCH 31 – SPECIAL EXHIBITION BASEBALL GAME – Miles College Plays the Barons in Exhibition Game – Birmingham Barons will play the Miles College Baseball Team in an special exhibition game at Regions Field on Monday, March 31, at 6:30 p.m. Gates will open at 5:30 p.m. Dr. George T. French, Jr., President of Miles College will be throwing the ceremonial first pitch.  This exhibition game has taken place in the past. However, this game is due in part to the growth and expansion of Miles College. “The growth”, says President French “is aimed at providing additional opportunities for Miles College students and strengthening Fairfield, Birmingham and surrounding communities.” All seats are general admission and open to the public.
