The Bethel Baptist Church, Berney Points, is announcing the public opening of the Rev. William H. “Bill” Greason Museum of Legends. The museum was unveiled November 16, 2014 during the church’s 128th Anniversary celebration. In addition to memorabilia from Rev. Greason’s legacy, the museum also showcases other members of the church who share their stories of success. Their stories represent the Dream – the Dream that Dr. King spoke about for all Americans. These persons overcame adversity and became successful in their careers. The exhibits encompass various stages of these individual careers and recognitions at local, state and national levels. The museum highlights Pastor Greason as a Negro Major League Baseball Player, Munford Point Marine, Community Leader and a Man of God; Levy Forte, Jr., a Retired Lt. Colonel U.S. Army, Vietnam Veteran and a Educator; Johnny Williams, Sr., a Retired Birmingham Police Detective and Federal Drug Task Force Member; Eugene Thomas, a Retired U.S.Military/Vietnam Veteran; Michael Holt, a Retired Federal Agent; and Tolanda Beal, a Retired EEG Tech at UAB Hospital and the first Black female supervisor for the department and a major participant with Optimist International.
In addition to Rev. Greason and the members’ exhibits, the museum displays art depicting Buffalo Soldiers, the Tuskegee Airmen and the History of the church dating back to 1886.
The purpose of the museum was envisioned by Rev. Greason who wanted to show the community that there are people in the church and community that faced similar social, economic, and educational hardship, but were able to overcome and push forward to fulfill the dream and make a difference in society.
The museum is open to the public and admission is free to schools, social groups, and church organizations. Donations are accepted and appreciated. Contact church for info and tours.
