HBCU Basketball Association
The HBCU Basketball Association (HBCUBA) will host a free professional open tryout on Sunday, April 19, from 3:30 to 6:30 p.m. at Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School.
Athletes from across the Southeast will compete for placement on one of 10 teams in the league’s inaugural summer season. The event is free and open to the public, inviting families, youth, and community members to experience high-level basketball at no cost.
Founded by Kimberly D. Meadows, HBCUBA is a social enterprise focused on removing financial barriers while creating access, exposure, and opportunity through sports. What began with the Magic City Surge has grown into a full tournament-style league designed to connect athletes with real pathways and bring communities together through culture and competition.
The April 19 tryout will feature a live DJ, community engagement, and a high-energy environment centered around inclusion and impact.
The league’s ownership group reflects a powerful mix of experience and leadership, including Jason Caffey, two-time NBA Champion; KJ McDaniels, former NBA player; Paul Gaffney, Harlem Globetrotter legend; Wes Saxton Jr. and Chad Slade, former NFL athletes; along with respected coaches, community leaders, and a groundbreaking team owned by high school seniors.
“This is bigger than basketball,” said Meadows. “We are creating access, building community, and showing athletes and young people what is possible when opportunity meets preparation.”
This event is made possible in part by grassroots sponsor Global Safety Professionals, whose support helps ensure the experience remains free for participants and the community.
