Russia conducts first airstrike in Syria

0

Washington (CNN)Russia has conducted its first airstrike against ISIS in Syria, a Russian Defense Ministry spokesman said Wednesday.

The airstrike targeted ISIS military equipment, communications centers, vehicles and ammunition, Maj. Gen. Igor Konashenkov said, as part of pinpoint strikes against ISIS ground targets.

Syrian state-run news agency SANA said Russian warplanes had targeted “ISIS dens” in locations including al-Rastan, Talbiseh and Zafaraniya in Homs province, as well as Al-Tilol al-Hmer, in Qunaitra province, Aydoun, a village on the outskirts of the town of Salamiya, Deer Foul between Hama and Homs, and the outskirts of Salmiya.

But a senior U.S. administration official told CNN’s Elise Labott the Russian airstrike near the city of Homs “has no strategic purpose” in terms of combating ISIS, which “shows they are not there to go after ISIL.” ISIL is another acronym for ISIS.

The official said the U.S. had no intention of preventing the strikes but that Russian planes didn’t seem to be flying in areas where the U.S. was operating. “They are not stupid,” the official said.

The State Department said U.S.-led coalition missions were continuing as normal despite an advance warning and request from Russia to stay out of Syrian airspace.

Kerry: ‘Grave concerns’

During his statement at the U.N. Security Council meeting Wednesday on fighting terrorism, U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said: “We have conducted a number of strikes against ISIL targets in Syria over the past 24 hours including just an hour ago. These strikes will continue.”

Kerry said the U.S.-led coalition had conducted 3,000 airstrikes against ISIS and that efforts would dramatically increase.

He warned that the fight against ISIS should not be confused with with support for Syrian President Bashar al-Assad.

“Moreover, we have also made clear that we would have grave concerns should Russia strike areas where ISIL and al Qaeda affiliated targets are not operating. Strikes of that kind would question Russia’s real intentions — fighting ISIL or protecting the Assad regime,” he said.

A senior U.S. defense official told CNN the Pentagon was “taken aback” by Russia’s actions. “Our presidents just talked about setting up de-confliction talks and now they just go ahead and do this? They cannot be trusted.”

A second U.S. official said, “This is not how military relations are conducted.”

Pentagon spokesman Peter Cook had told reporters Tuesday that Secretary of Defense Ash Carter directed his staff to “open lines of communication with Russia on de-confliction.” The purpose of discussions would be “to ensure the safety of coalition air crews,” he said.

Russia: Coalition strikes on ISIS illegal

Earlier Wednesday, the upper house of the Russian parliament gave President Vladimir Putin approval to use the air force in Syria, state media reported.

“The Federation Council unanimously supported the President’s request — 162 votes in favor of granting permission,” Kremlin Chief of Staff Sergey Ivanov said, according to state-run ITAR-Tass news agency.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matviyenko said that the Assad regime was the only legitimate force fighting ISIS, ITAR-Tass reported. It quoted her as saying that strikes by the U.S-led coalition violated international law as “interference into the territory of a sovereign state can only be carried out on authorization of U.N. Security Council or on request of official legitimate authorities.”

Matviyenko’s comments were echoed by Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, ITAR-Tass reported. “As a matter of fact Russia will be the sole country that will be carrying out that operation on the legitimate basis at the request of Syria’s legitimate authorities,” Peskov said.

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Russia conducted airstrikes after a request from al-Assad.

Speaking at the start of a United Nations Security Council meeting to combat terrorism, Lavrov said: “On the 30th of September in response to a letter by the President of Syria, the President of Russia asked and received the consent of the Council of Federation for the use of the armed forces of the Russian Federation in the Syrian Arab Republic.”

He continued: “We’re referring here exclusively to the operation of the Russian air force to carry out strikes against ISIL positions in Syria. We have informed the authorities in the United States and other members of the coalition created by the Americans of this and are ready to forge standing channels of communication to ensure maximally effective fight against the terrorist groups.”

Israeli officials said Russia had contacted Israeli defense officials prior to conducting its airstrike operation in Syria.

French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius said France had not received advance warning and he wanted to be sure Russia did not target opponents of the Assad regime or civilians.

“As far as the strikes themselves are concerned, we have to check that it really was Daesh and terrorist groups that really have been targeted and not opponents to the Syrian regime or the civilian population,” Fabius told reporters, after giving a statement to the U.N. Security Council. Daesh is the Arabic acronym for ISIS. “I’m not accusing anybody of anything but we have to check the facts,” he said.

‘No Russian boots on the ground’

Putin, speaking Wednesday at a government meeting, said his country would not become mired in the Syrian conflict.

“This military operation is limited in time. Russian air forces will help Assad’s army while it’s on the offensive mode,” Putin said. “There will be no Russian boots on the ground.”

Ahead of Wednesday’s strikes Russia’s air force carried out several days of familiarization flights, and the collection of potential targeting information by drones.

Four Russian Su-34 Fullback fighter jets are now at the Latakia air base in Syria, and more than 600 Russian troops are in place, a U.S. official with knowledge of the latest intelligence told CNN this week.

RELATED: Russia may be seeking Syria proxy

U.S. officials have previously said Russia’s movements suggest that its targets might be something other than ISIS.

“We see some very sophisticated air defenses going into those airfields. We see some very sophisticated air-to-air aircraft going into these airfields. I have not seen ISIL flying any airplanes that require SA-15s or SA-22s (Russian missiles). I have not seen ISIL flying any airplanes that require sophisticated air-to-air capabilities,” Gen. Phillip Breedlove, NATO’s supreme allied commander, said on Monday.

“I’m looking at the capabilities and the capacities that are being created and I determine from that what might be their intent. These very sophisticated air defense capabilities are not about ISIL. They’re about something else,” he concluded.

Defense officials have previously told CNN that the U.S. believes Moscow may fear that al-Assad may not be able to retain power in the war-torn country and wants to be in position to be able to support a proxy should the situation collapse.

Russia is also a close ally of al-Assad and may want to bolster him, while the U.S. has repeatedly called for him to go in order to resolve the five-year civil war.

Alabama Prep Sports Academy Working to Keep Student-Athletes’ Dreams Alive

By: Brittany Young

With a goal of bridging the gap between academics and athletics, the Alabama Prep Sports Academy provides an option that many parents and student-athletes don’t know is available to them.

Located in Calera, Ala., APSA is a post-graduate, academic-athletic program for students who want to continue their journey to earning an athletic scholarship to an accredited four-year institution. Many student-athletes choose to attend junior college when they don’t meet certain grade point averages, SAT or ACT scores, but athletes can achieve these goals through a post-graduate program without losing NCAA eligibility.

Through APSA, athletes have the opportunity to be exposed to a college-like academic program while competing at a college level in games against Division III, National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA) and community colleges, and other prep schools. Student-Athletes’ eligibility isn’t affected because they are not considered full-time students at APSA, only taking SAT and ACT prep courses and basic courses to receive some college credit. Most students are enrolled in the post-graduate program six months to a year.

However, not every student pursues a post-graduate program to meet certain qualifications or gain college credit. Some students may want to further develop as an athlete, gain more exposure

at a higher level of competition, or maybe unsatisfied with their chosen college following high school.

APSA President DeWayne Moore says he got involved with the program because he has a passion for helping young people and seeing them succeed. During a time when the cost of higher education is skyrocketing, he believes APSA offers a great experience at a manageable price. “Student-Athletes receive federal funding, but may incur some out-of-pocket expenses. APSA also receives sponsorship from the community, businesses and private organizations,” Moore says.

According to the APSA website, the total cost per semester (tuition plus room and board) for an international student is $15,595 with I-20 Visa fees included. The cost for American students is $14,060 per semester. However, up to $10,000 of financing is available for students. The cost of attendance includes two NCAA approved online courses, SAT and ACT prep courses and materials, athletic fees, uniforms and equipment, transportation, a monitored strength and conditioning program, NCAA clearance evaluation, recruiting promotion and development of a highlight video.

Some necessities that are not covered in tuition costs are enrollment, administration and application review fees, NCAA Clearinghouse registration, a laptop with a built-in camera and individual health insurance.

APSA only has a football program but is looking to add other programs such as basketball in the near future. “Our record is currently 1-3, but our players are being recruited by Division I, Division II and Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) colleges,” Moore says.

The Bearcats hit the gridiron at home against Redemption Academy Oct. 3 at 4 p.m. For more information, visit the APSA website at apsabearcats.org.

By now we all know that Perri Reid (aka Pebbles) – TLC’s former manager – sued Viacom for $40 mill claiming she was defamed by the VH1 biopic “CrazySexyCool: The TLC Story.”

tlcmovie

Pebbles explained in the docs that the film depicted her as conniving and dishonest, and she denied allegations that she underpaid and controlled the group’s money.

Viacom fired back in court docs in which the company maintained that the portrayal of Pebbles in the pic was accurate and done without malice. They demanded the lawsuit be dismissed.

TLC’s Chilli & T-Boz were eventually dragged into the lawsuit when Pebbles deposed and question them about the film and her portrayal in it. On September 23rd, the depositions of Chili and T-Boz were filed in the case and the two women revealed that they were only paid $60K each by VH1 for the rights to their life story.

thejasminebrand.com obtained the court docs, in which “T-Boz explains under oath that the contract with VH1 paid her $10K for her life rights and then $50K as a consultant fee on the film. The lawyer grilling the singer asked if she believed this was a low amount for the movie, to which she says that it’s what she agreed to with VH1.”

Chili confirmed the $60K payment but she also explained that there were other financial incentives for doing the TV film, including how the group obtained the masters of their earlier recordings, which will allow them to make royalties off future use.

T-Boz also revealed during questioning that she’s adopting a baby. According to TMZ, the 45-year-old singer, who has a 14-year-old daughter with ex-husband, rapper Mack 10, was asked if she had any communication with fellow group member Chilli regarding the lawsuit and she responded that their only contact had been when she told her about the adoption.

Earlier this year, T-Boz and Chilli set up a Kickstarter campaign to raise money to record a new album. On September 24, they updated the site letting fans know they are now in the studio recording the album that’s set for a 2016 release.

“The music is coming out great and it’s only with your support of TLC on Kickstarter that this is possible,” they wrote. “Thanks as always for your love and support and we can’t wait to deliver a new record and tour next year.”

According to the Kickstarter page over 4000 backers pledged $430,255 to make the album happen.

THE LATEST: OBAMA WOULD WORK WITH ANY NATION TO FIX SYRIA

0

UNITED NATIONS (AP) — Developments as the United Nations General Assembly marks its 70th year and world leaders debate issues gripping the global community and governments.

10:55

President Barack Obama says the United States is willing to work with any nation, including Russia and Iran, to solve the Syrian conflict.

But he says bringing about an end to the four-year civil war means Syrian President Bashar Assad cannot stay in office.

Obama says Assad responded to peaceful protests with repression and killing and wouldn’t be able to satisfactorily bring peace to the nation.

Obama calls the situation in Syria “an assault on all our humanity.”

10:45 a.m.

President Barack Obama says the world cannot stand by while Russia violates Ukraine’s integrity and sovereignty.

He says if there are no consequences for Russia’s annexation of Crimea, it could happen to any other country in the United Nations.

Obama is speaking at the U.N. General Assembly. He’s criticizing Russia just hours before he’s set to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

Obama says Russia’s state-controlled media depict recent events as an example of a resurgent Russia. He says that view is shared by many U.S. politicians who think the world is in a new Cold War.

But Obama says that’s not true. He says Ukrainians are more interested than ever in aligning with the West.

Obama says the U.S. doesn’t want to isolate Russia. He says he wants Russia to engage diplomatically and resolve the crisis in a way that lets Ukraine determine its own future.

10:35 a.m.

President Barack Obama is warning U.N member nations of the risks of failing to work together to solve world problems.

He says the work of the United Nations remains incomplete seven decades after its founding and warns that “dangerous currents risk pulling us back into a darker, more disordered world.”

Addressing the U.N. General Assembly gathering of world leaders, Obama spoke of leaders who believe power is a “zero sum game,” or that stronger states must impose their will on weaker ones, or that individual rights don’t matter and order must be imposed by force.

Obama says the world’s nations cannot go back to the “old ways of conflict and coercion” and that “we will all suffer the consequences” for failing to work together more effectively.

10:20 a.m.

Brazil’s president says her country’s deeply troubled economy is in a “moment of transition to another cycle of economic expansion,” one that is more profound, solid and long-lasting.

President Dilma Rousseff spoke to a packed chamber Monday at the annual U.N. General Assembly of world leaders. President Barack Obama was set to speak after her.

This is a time of extreme volatility for Brazil’s economy, with inflation hovering around 10 percent and unemployment the highest in decades.

But Rouseff told world leaders that the economy is “stronger, more solid and resilient than some years ago.”

Credit agency Standard & Poor’s downgraded the country’s sovereign debt to “junk” status earlier this month.

Rousseff has submitted a budget to Congress with a built-in deficit of about $10 billion.

9:05 a.m.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon for the first time is calling for the situation in Syria to be referred to the International Criminal Court.

In his state of the world address to leaders from the U.N.’s 193 member states, Ban says “innocent Syrians pay the price of more barrel bombs and terrorism” and there must be no impunity for “atrocious” crimes.

His call opened the annual General Assembly gathering of world leaders that includes addresses from President Barack Obama, Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping on Monday morning alone.

Ban says five countries “hold the key” to a political solution to Syria: Russia, the U.S., Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Iran.

The U.N. chief says the Syrian conflict is “driven by regional powers and rivalries.”

[WATCH] Mathew Knowles Gets Candid About Split With Beyoncé, Talks Relationship With Jay Z

EURWebmathewknowlesinsider

When the news broke that Mathew Knowles was being fired from his position as manager of pop icon Beyoncé, it raised a ton of questions.

Her fans wanted to know why a woman who so often expressed appreciation for her family, would decide to give the boot to own father.

According to the rumor mill, when Mr. Knowles was let go, it was because he was mismanaging his daughter’s funds. Another theory was that his relationship went sour with Beyoncé after moving forward with his divorce from Tina Knowles.

Anytime someone has to fire a relative, it’s probably safe to assume that there’s some lingering animosity. However, when the firing is paired with allegations of stealing, you can bet your last that the relationship is pretty badly damaged, sometimes even beyond repair.

While we haven’t seen Beyoncé and her father together much since he was terminated as her manager in 2011, the music industry executive maintains that things are okay between him and the R&B superstar. But as Madame Noir points out, his demeanor in his uncomfortable interview with the “Insider” leads us to believe otherwise.

On Jay Z:

I think he’s a great guy. He’s an exceptional businessman. He’s an artist and he loves my daughter. If she’s happy, I’m overwhelmed happy.

On the current status of his relationship with Beyoncé:

I’m not talking about my personal business.

On how often he sees Beyoncé:

Enough.

On if he saw Beyoncé on her 34th birthday:

Maybe.

On rumors that he has been cut off by his daughters:

That’s not true. That’s not true at all.

On being released as Bey’s manager:

I’ll only say that it was time for me to be a dad and not a manager.

On granddaughter Blue Ivy:

She’s like incredible. She’s the smartest 3-year-old that I know. But I would say that. Proud grandfather.

Wife of Dolphins’ Brent Grimes arrested before Miami-Buffalo game

0

Miko Grimes, the wife of Dolphins cornerback Brent Grimes, was arrested on Sunday before Miami’s catastrophic loss to the Buffalo Bills. Grimes was arrested for resisting with violence and battery on a law enforcement officer, according to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

NBC 6 South Florida’s Adam Kuperstein said a witness claimed that Grimes tried to cross a police barricade before getting tackled by a cop. Kuperstein also reported Grimes was “belligerent” and started screaming obscenities. She resisted arrest and head-butted an officer, which is likely what led to the charge of battery on a law enforcement officer. She also tried kicking an officer and started swinging her elbows as she resisted.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, Grimes was booked into jail in Miami-Dade County and later released on bond. The Sun-Sentinel also said she was treated for injuries to her knee, arm and forearm.

Grimes was threatened with a taser, the Sun-Sentinel said as it cited the police report, and she complied. But when she was being transported for booking on a golf cart she started to resist again.

Grimes is outspoken, and she is a public figure around Miami. She hosts a radio show there, and has drawn the attention of the NFL with her criticisms, sometimes through her Twitter feed.

Here’s video of the arrest. Warning: NSFW language within:

Grimes has no problem making her views known; earlier this year, she went off on the NFL as the world’s “shadiest, disrespectful sport” on Twitter, and hinted darkly that she knows “where the bodies are buried.” It’s likely she’ll have something to say about this particular day’s events as well.

House Speaker John Boehner resigning from Congress at end of October

0

Washington (CNN)John Boehner, the Ohio Republican who steered his party to an overwhelming House majority in 2010, told colleagues Friday he’s stepping down as Speaker and will leave Congress at the end of October.

The abrupt decision comes after he faced heavy pressure from conservatives to take a harder line on their causes, most recently over defunding Planned Parenthood.

Boehner, who has presided over the House since 2011, explained during a closed-door meeting with Republicans Friday morning that he had only planned to serve two terms as speaker but decided to hold onto his post after then-House Majority Leader Eric Cantor lost his seat during a primary last year, a Republican lawmaker in the room told CNN.

Boehner, who didn’t speak to reporters on Friday, also told the lawmakers that Pope Francis’ visit to Congress the day before was a crystallizing moment, according to the lawmaker. Boehner then read the prayer of St. Francis to the conference after announcing his decision.

“After yesterday with the Pope, he decided to leave on this high note,” a top Boehner aide told CNN. “Literally did not make the decision til last night.”

The Ohio Republican’s tenure as speaker has been marked by clashes with conservatives — especially when it comes to fiscal policy. He’s struggled to push through legislation to increase the debt ceiling and was facing another showdown next week to keep the government open. The speaker has often relied on Democratic votes during these moments — a strategy that has infuriated conservatives.

Ohio GOP Rep. Steve Chabot ‎called the mood in the room “somber” during Boehner’s announcement and said there were tears from Speaker and other lawmakers.

“I got choked up,” Chabot said.

Boehner’s decision came as a shock to many, with his top deputy House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy finding out moments before his announcement. McCarthy, a California Republican, is a top candidate to succeed Boehner. Rep. Paul Ryan, the House Ways and Means Committee chairman who was the party’s vice presidential nominee in 2012, isn’t planning to run for the seat at this time, according to an aide.

Rep. Greg Walden, a member of Boehner’s House leadership, said he had no idea Boehner would announce his resignation this morning and called it a “terrible loss for the party.”

Walden said he wondered what the Pope told Boehner that may have affected his decision: “I don’t know if this was a message from God but I wish he sent a different message.”

The Speaker has survived many challenges to his position. He was facing another threat after Rep. Mark Meadows, a conservative North Carolina Republican, offered a resolution before the August recess to “vacate the chair,” a rarely invoked move that would have stripped Boehner of the Speaker’s gavel if it passed.

Meadows told reporters on Friday he would not run to succeed Boehner.

Still, some conservatives applauded Boehner’s resignation.

“Yesterday John Boehner was Speaker of the House,” Sen. Ted Cruz said at the Values Voter summit Friday. “Y’all come to town and somehow that changes. My only request is can you come more often?”

The House Speaker is third in line for the presidency after Vice President Joe Biden.

Republican presidential candidate Jeb Bush praised Boehner in a tweet Friday morning.

“John Boehner dedicated his life to public service. Bringing the Holy Father to Congress was a fitting cap to a great career,” said Bush, the former governor of Florida.
