The Donald Trump Phenomenon: Par For The Course

Bobby E. Mills, PhD

“He that loveth silver shall not be satisfied with silver; nor he that loveth abundance with increase: this is also vanity.” (Ecclesiastes 5:10). To be sure, a fool will say in the heart of his mind that money answers all things (the vanity of life). Money changing is bad for soul-salvation, because sometimes individuals attempt to buy and sell souls. “I know thy works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but thou art rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.” (Revelation 2:9).
Question: Can American culture; especially the American political system be liberated from the curse of money? I don’t know! However, the “Jury” is still out, but we all know how difficult it is for a rich man to go to heaven.
“Wealthy” drug dealers are exalted in American culture above spiritual-minded individuals, because of their wealth; even though they are selling death to the Nation. Many young men are recruited into homosexuality life-styles through drugs. And, by the way, many young women are recruited into prostitution seeking to “sell” something that is the “Gift of God” (LOVE). This is precisely why God hates prostitution.
Herein lies the Donald Trump phenomenon: Americans are listening to Donald Trump simply because he has the platform of wealth and money, not because he has a “good-spiritual- understanding” concerning life. It seems as though some Americans are willing to vote against their own best interests and that of the Nation for perceived “white-privilege.” But, we all know, that beyond a shadow of doubt: “Black lives Matter.” One of the wisest men recorded in biblical history said it best: “I am black, but comely, o ye daughters of Jerusalem, as the tents of Kedar, as the curtains of Solomon. Look not upon me, because I am black, because the sun hath looked upon me.” (The Song of Solomon 1:5-6).
The Bible says: “Answer a fool according to his folly, lest thou also be like unto him. Answer a fool according to his folly, lest he be wise in his own conceit. He that sendeth a message by the hand of a fool cutteth off the feet, and drinketh damage.” (Proverbs 26: 4-6). But, more importantly, “When he speaketh fair, believe him not: for there are seven abominations in his heart.” (Proverbs 26: 25). The six “deadly sins” and the seventh is an abomination to God: “These six things doth the Lord hate; yea, seven are an abomination unto him: a proud look, a lying tongue, and hands that shed blood, a heart that deviseth wicked imaginations, feet that be swift in running to mischief, a false witness that speaketh lies, and he that soweth discord among the brethren.” (Proverbs 6: 16-19).
The love of money hinders the development of spiritual-moral-conscience, because individuals who have an abundance of money think they can buy “anything and everything”, including moral conscience as well as other individuals. Of course, anything money can buy is not “necessarily” good or bad, because money is simply a tool to advance spiritual mindset, be it good or bad. Listening to individuals simply because they are rich is always “an unwise” proposition, because… “And again I say unto you, It is easier for a camel to go through the eye of a needle, than for a rich man to enter into the Kingdom of God.” (Matthew 19: 24).
The Bible is replete with spiritual examples of the potential curse of money upon an individual’s life and lifestyle, because the deceitfulness of riches can choke off the Word of God, and an individual becomes spiritually unfruitful. Therefore, money is a tool that individuals should use as tools, not use as fools to enslave themselves to the vanity of this world. In case you have momentary lapses of knowledge (memory), earth is your natural habitat but trust me, not your home. Unfortunately, too many Americans use money as fools, which in turn, engender self-enslavement. Sometimes even the good that rich individuals do with their wealth becomes bad, because of inappropriate spiritual motivations. Motive is the domain where sin resides (devil’s workshop). This is precisely why police agencies in seeking to solve crimes always first look for who has the motive plus the opportunity.
Questions: What is propelling the Trump Phenomenon? What does the Trump Phenomenon say about the philosophical tenets of the Republican Party?
Unfortunately, in the 21st century the answer to both questions is: “White Privilege.” That is, the dehumanizing vestiges of chattel slavery and institutional racism. The physical signs have been pulled down, but the heart of the mind of too many “individuals” have not changed. After a bloody Civil War, institutionalized Jim Crowism, institutionalized racism, a Civil Rights Act and a Voting Rights Act the racial divide still remains as a “color-ordinated-chasm. The “American melting pot” is simply a noble theory, not a living reality. Shame, shame, and more shame on the “use-to-be” Party of Abraham Lincoln, an avid reader of the Holy Bible, because now the Republican Party is the “Dixiecrat Exclusionary Party” based upon “White Privilege.”
All spiritually-minded Americans should embrace this scripture: “And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to his purpose.” (Romans 8:28). Selah!

Mandela’s Grandson Accused of Rape, Granted Bail

JOHANNESBURG (AP) — A South African judge has granted bail to one of Nelson Mandela‘s grandsons, accused of raping a 15-year-old girl.
On Tuesday, Judge Pieter Du Plessis granted bail of 7,000 rand, nearly $540. The 24-year-old is accused of raping the girl at a Johannesburg-area restaurant on Aug. 7.
In granting bail, the judge said there was a reasonable prospect that a trial could end in an acquittal.
The Mandela grandson’s lawyers tried to prove that the teenager appeared to be above the legal age of consent, which is 16. They also argued that the encounter was consensual, presenting written witness testimony.

Parenting is Not a Football Game – Why I Disagree with James Harrison’s Parenting Style

James Harrison’s post about returning the trophies, “I am sorry I’m not sorry for believing that everything in life should be earned and I’m not about to raise my two boys to be men by making them believe that they are entitled to something just because they tried their best.. cause sometimes your best is not enough, and that should drive you to want better…”

By Darrell “Coach D” Andrews

WILMINGTON, Del. (BlackNews.com) — All day long I have been listening to radio station after radio station, internet show host and the public give their opinion on James Harrison’’s actions as a father to teach his kids how to “earn” things. His decision to “give back” his kids’ trophies to teach them the power of self-determination concerns me as a father, community leader and consultant to schools and school districts nationally. I understand his beliefs in the need to teach his kids to have drive and determination, but I do not agree with his methods. I also read his tweets and am glad to see that he said he loves and will always support his kids.
However, as a father of four children, ages 4-17, I would never teach my kids this way. My kids are driven, self-motivated and overachievers on many fronts, and in our house we have too many “participation trophies” to count. All of my kids played (or are playing) sports in their younger years. I coached many of their teams.
From my perspective, especially for kids under 10, the premise is to create a sense of oneness by giving these trophies over the typical “MVP” or “Most Valuable Player.” We see in professional sports today the arrogance that comes when someone thinks they are a “superior athlete” compared to others. At the younger years of life, I think you are robbing kids of their youth and innocence by raising them to get theirs by earning it, do what it takes to succeed, grind, have grit and don’’t let anything stop you. One year a team my son’’s team played football against taught their kids this way. A team of 9 and 10-year-old players were spearheading, blindsiding and low cutting, all for the sake of winning the championship. Every year this team wins a lot of games, but I am deeply concerned about the mental well-being of their players later in life.
As a motivational speaker, I inspire people from elementary school kids to corporate giants. You will never see me go into a school with second and third graders and tell them “you have to make sacrifices now, to achieve your goals later!” You have to go for it and not let anyone stop you!” My goodness, they are second graders!! Let them enjoy being young! Let them enjoy their friends. Let their grandparents enjoy taking a pic with their babies with their trophy. They have their whole lives to grind! Not now!!!
Another reason I think this is a problem is when you teach kids at an early age to hustle, drive and earn their futures, they become insensitive to people. It becomes about “getting theirs.” Are all of his kids going to be pro-football players? What if his daughter becomes a housewife – is she now a failure? Every year you hear of kids committing suicide because they did not meet the overreaching expectations of their parents. At a college, one of which I will not mention it’s name, they had to erect a high fence near a bridge because they had too many students jumping off the bridge and committing suicide because they got a B instead of an A. This is insane! Parents place so much pressure on them to excel that they come to the conclusion that life is not important, mom or dad will never embrace me for me, and I do not want to live anymore! I am not saying this as a casual observer but as a person who has spoken to close to a million youth at school assemblies, college campuses and events. I have helped to stop several from taking their own lives as a result of feeling like they are not good enough. This mindset is the primary source behind youth depression and stress. It all starts at home!
My four kids are super-talented. My 13-year-old daughter has been in a national play that reached a million people. It was very competitive to land the role she landed. My son is one of the top up and coming animation students in the nation. He recently spent the summer at a pre-college program, which is the #1 art school in the country. It was competitive to get this slot as well. They chose 100 of the best up and coming artists and animators. My younger children are also excelling and growing. My wife and I have them all on a purpose path based upon their own gifts, talents and abilities. We want them to live their dreams, not ours! We are teaching them self-determination as well, but not by humiliating them, getting in their faces and driving them. We use various scenarios to encourage them to be their best. The funny thing is this, we do this while we look over and admire their trophies. It is not a trophy that shapes a child; it is a good parent who lovingly guides the best out of them.
I do not agree with his methods or styles. This mindset does not make strong men; it makes aggressive ones who may use their aggression in the wrong way. In saying all of this, as a man of color, I will say I am glad that he is a father. I may not agree with his method, but I appreciate his willingness to be there for his kids.
My two cents!

Penn GSE Report Offers District-By-District Look At How Black Students Are Disciplined At Highest Rates In Southern Schools

Penn GSE Researchers Report Offers District-By-District Look At How Black Students Are Disciplined At Highest Rates In Southern Schools

PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 25, 2015 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — In schools across the United States, Black students are punished more severely than their peers. But nowhere are Black students suspended or expelled more than in the South. Fifty-five percent of the 1.2 million Black students suspended in the U.S. live in just 13 Southern states.

Read the FULL REPORT, which lists the districts in each state that discipline Black students at the most disproportionate rates, at www.gse.upenn.edu/equity/SouthernStates.

In a new report, the Center for the Study of Race and Equity in Education at the University of Pennsylvania Graduate School of Education offers a state-by-state, school district-by-district examination of school discipline for Black students in the South.

Researchers Edward Smith and Shaun Harper found Black students were consistently suspended and expelled at higher rates than their peers across the region. This held true in urban, suburban, and rural districts, for both Black boys and Black girls. The study is an analysis of every public school district in the South, over 3,000.

“The findings in our report point to the residual effects of Jim Crow, slavery, and unequal schooling,” Harper said. “They are further explained by poverty trends, structural inequities in the education workforce, and a longstanding history of racial injustice that cyclically reproduces itself, especially across these 13 Southern states.”

Suspensions and expulsions can carry life-changing consequences for children. They impact academic performance and disrupt pathways to college, but also how a school and community perceive a student.

“It could take years to process through the trauma and stigma of being deemed a problem—that you’re not responsible, not serious,” Smith said. “Teachers and district leaders are signaling that you’re not worthy enough for us to invest in.”

The researchers’ recommendations for improving equity in school discipline include:

  • Black families, religious congregations, and others concerned about racial justice must hold schools accountable and partner with educators to identify alternatives to policies and practices that sustain the school-to-prison pipeline.
  • Zero tolerance discipline policies do not make schools safer. School leaders need to eliminate them, offer more professional development for educators on managing student behaviors, and lead district-wide conversations about racial equity.
  • Teaching more about implicit bias and other racist forces that lead to disproportionality in school discipline must occur in schools of education, as well as other sites where teachers are prepared and educational leaders are certified.

Harper, Executive Director for the Center and a Penn GSE professor, hopes the report is a call to action.

“We want to raise consciousness and ignite important conversations among parents and families, community leaders and activists, clergy and religious leaders, and educators about what we can do to make sure Black students aren’t continually affected by racist school policies and practices,” Harper said.
