Attempted Murder Investigation

The Birmingham Police Department reports that detectives have arrested and charged a suspect in connection with an attempted murder investigation. The incident occurred Saturday, June 6, 2015 in the 6800 Block of Joppa Avenue.

Mugshot- Yancey, Devonte

The suspect has been identified as:Devonte Yancey, B/M, 22, of Birmingham, Alabama. Three Attempted Murder warrants were obtained against the suspect. All three warrants have a $150,000 bond each. The suspect is in the custody of the Jefferson County Jail.

Our investigation revealed the suspect is the individual responsible for shooting into a patrol car occupied by two Birmingham Police Officers. On 6/6/2015, officers were responding to a call involving someone shooting in the area. Upon arrival, they were flagged down by a citizen. As officers sat in their patrol car speaking with the citizen, theofficers began receiving gunfire into their vehicle. The officers responded immediately by exiting their vehicle. Both the officers and citizen moved to the passenger side for cover. The officer’s patrol car was struck several times along with a shattered rear window. Thankfully, no one was injured.

The Birmingham Police Department was determined and committed to apprehending this ruthless individual that decided to try and kill a Birmingham Police Officer. In less than twelve hours the suspect was identified, charged, located and arrested.

If there is anyone who has additional information pertaining to this case, they are encouraged to contact the B.P.D. Homicide Unit @ 254-1764.

How ‘Hero’ Bus Driver Stopped Kidnapping in Progress on His Bus

Good Morning America
PHOTO: A hero bus driver in California recognizes a kidnapped boy.

A Northern California bus driver who’s been praised for his heroism by his employer and police says he simply followed his parental instincts when he stopped a kidnapping in progress on his bus.

A 3-year-old boy was reported missing Friday morning from the Milpitas Public Library, about 45 miles from San Francisco, according a press release from the Milpitas Police Department.

About an hour later, Tim Watson, a Valley Transportation Authority bus driver, noticed a man and boy on his bus who matched the description of the suspect and child wanted by authorities.

The boy was crying, Watson said.

“I saw his teary eye,” he said.

So Watson concocted a clever plan to deliver the suspect to authorities.

“I started asking passengers about a missing green backpack,” Watson told ABC News. “What I’m trying to do is get to the perpetrator.”

Watson then pulled over and pretended to look for the lost bag so he could contact police, he said.

When the bus arrived at the Fremont BART station, police officers were waiting. They found the suspect, identified as Alfonso Edington, 23, getting off the bus with the 3-year-old in his arms, police said.

An officer “pried the child away” from Edington, police said, and after a brief struggle, Edington was detained and taken into custody.

The child didn’t appear to have any injuries, police said.

After the scene calmed down, Watson asked a police officer what had happened, and when he learned it was an abduction, “I just lost it.”

“I became very emotional,” Watson, a father of two, told ABC News today. “This could have been my child that was abducted.”

Two days after the ordeal, Watson said it’s “becoming more surreal to me.”

“What if I didn’t read that message until I got to Fremont BART?” he said.

Watson “was definitely a hero,” Robert Vega, Communications Supervisor with the Milpitas Police, told ABC News.

A statement from VTA General Manager Nuria Fernandez said: “We are so proud of the entire team of law enforcement and transit employees for their professionalism and heroism that resulted in a young child being reunited with his family. Operator Watson was an integral part of that team effort, putting to perfect use the tools he was given in operator training combined with his innate composure and astuteness that resulted in a very happy ending.”

But Watson said he just followed his paternal instincts.

“I feel I did what any father would do,” Watson said.

Edington was arrested on a kidnapping charge, Milpitas Police told ABC News, and he remained in custody Sunday.

Chicago woman and her younger brother stabbed, beaten in what appears to be a racist hate crime

by: Shaun King

Kristina Fox, a 30-year-old administrative assistant, alongside her younger brother, was beaten and stabbed repeatedly in her back and face while being called “nigger” repeatedly by a racist mob of white men and women in Taylor-Lauridsen Park in Canaryville. Fox told her horrific story on Facebook from the hospital and recently did her first television interview, seen below, as she recovers.

“On the morning of Saturday, May 30, 2015, my little brother, Marcus Fox, my daughter’s father, Darrius Walton, and myself were sitting in Taylor Lauridsen Park conversing with 3 Caucasian people we had just met (Courtney, Kevin, and Jodie). Everyone was having a nice time.Approximately 7-9 more Caucasian people arrived in the park. My little brother being the social butterfly he is introduced himself and began chatting with the new arrivals. After about 30 minutes, one of the guys out of the group we initially met and another from the group that arrived later got into a verbal altercation with each other. My little brother tried to calm things down but this soon escalated as everyone began jumping on him. It was at this point things turned for the worse as he and I fought this massive group of Caucasians consisting of both men and women.

They were throwing glass bottles, crutches, bricks, and anything else they could find at us. As we continued to fight through this crowd of assailants to get away, more Caucasians came from out of nowhere and joined in brutally attacking us delivering closed fist blows and kicks to our bodies and head. We began the fight of our lives.

This MOB of around 20 Caucasians beat us until we were unable to move and left us laying in the park. My brother & I sustained multiple injuries. I was stabbed eleven times, eight times in the back & right shoulder, twice in the face & once in the head (which the knife was left lodged by one of the perpetrators).

My brother was stabbed nine times, along his back, right side with one of the wounds causing him to have a punctured lung. NO ARRESTS have been made and the only publicity this received was an irresponsibly written 97 word article in the Chicago Sun-Times riddled with incorrect information.

If the roles were reversed and had this been a mob of African Americans attacking two Caucasians this would have garnered immediate attention and been plastered EVERYWHERE. We have contacted news stations & have not heard back from anyone. This further proves that America believes- BLACK LIVES DON’T MATTER. Please HELP US GET JUSTICE for this hate crime! Please help us show that OUR BLACK LIVES MATTER! ‪#‎BlackLivesMatter‬ Please help us share our story.”

Moving from Hate to Love

Moving from Hate to Love

  Rev. J.R. Reid

Henry’s grandfather left him 10 million dollars, and the next week a woman who hated him agreed to marry him. After three months of married life, Henry noticed that his new wife was ignoring him more and more. Whenever they went out in public, she ignored him and flirted with other men. Finally, he decided to confront her. ”Mary,” he said, I thought you married me for love? Was the only reason you married me was because my grandfather left me 10 million dollars when he died?” “Don’t be ridiculous,” she replied, “I don’t care who gave you the money!”
Sometimes hate can turn to love and love to hate but not for the reason we think.
Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount says, Love your enemies. This message is the fundamental law of God and the basis of His sending His Son for our salvation. Hence, love is to be boundless as the ocean. Jesus’ own earthly life was nothing but the perfect application of this principle. Our enemies are to be conquered by love and not hate. But how do we move from hate to love, especially when we have good reason to hate. I call this reason righteous indignation! We are told to pray for those who use us and abuse us, but how? In order to do something this hard, we must begin to see others as ourselves. In other words, we meet no one but ourselves. Whatever weaknesses we spot in others there is a little bit of that weakness in us. Now of course I am not talking about the mentally sick or people who are pathologically evil. They may have been born that way but even these people can be helped and not hated if we have the love of Christ in us. Remember John 3: 6. God gave us a way to love instead of hate by giving us Jesus who died for us all. This kind of love will return a blessing for a curse, goodwill for hating, spiritual benefits for evil treatment and persecution.
Christ on the cross prayed for his enemies; so did Stephen, the first Christian martyr who died following his speech to the ruling council of Israel. Christ died that we might learn to love ourselves and others unconditionally. When we do, we become wise in the ways of God. As such we will be hated by the world who does evil for evil, an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth. When we go to war with another nation we call it a “Just War” and in the name of freedom and national security, many of our constitutional rights may get violated. But as Christians we have supreme spiritual rights given by God in Christ. These high rights are that we love our enemies as we do ourselves. This is the only way to move from personal hate of others and hate in the world to the love that God is.

Hastert – A Shocking Story

According to unreliable facts so far, former Speaker of the house Dennis Hastert was paying a former student to keep quiet about allegations of sexual abuse from the time when Hastert was a teacher and wrestling coach in Illinois, two sources with knowledge of the federal government investigation told CNN.

Hastert was a teacher and wrestling coach in Yorkville, Illinois between 1965 and 1981 before starting politics.  Federal prosecutors indicted Hastert on Thursday last week for lying to the FBI about $3.5 million he agreed to pay to an undisclosed person to “Cover up past misconduct.”

A federal law enforcement official confirmed to CNN early last Friday evening that the former student was a male and a minor when the alleged abuse took place.  Federal law enforcement officials also said that investigators decided not to pursue a possible extortion case in the matter.

The high school where Hastert worked released a statement earlier Friday denying any knowledge of past misdeeds.

Because a person has been accused of something does not mean they are guilty.  In this country, we rely upon due process.  We have not reached that stage yet and various groups are removing the man’s name from boards and agencies, changing the name of the street named after him, etc.

The person that they should be criticizing is the one attempting to do the black- mailing.

In the event the Senator had sex with a minor he should have been supported by his family and it should have been reported to law enforcement.

At the present time, the only thing he has done wrong is to take his own money out of the bank.

Incidentally, if you take more than $10,000, it is not your responsibility to report it to the Federal government. It is the bank’s responsibility to do so.  You shouldn’t be able to put anyone in jail for using his or her own money.

Just in case he did do something, and did not report it, the statute of limitations sets in at some time.  The person that should be going to court is the one attempting to distort money.

Hillary Clinton’s Opposition – Bernie Sanders and Martin O’Malley
Senator Bernie Sanders said that he is campaigning for the poor.  What he should know is everybody is campaigning for the poor, even the Republican Party.

Bernie Sanders is not just running for president – he is running a “revolution.”

The firebrand Vermont Senator vowed to wrest back America from the hands of billionaires, formally launching a populist grass roots White House bid that threatens to tug Democratic frontrunner Hillary Clinton towards the liberal left.

“The gap between the very rich and everyone is wider than at any time since the 1920s.  The issue of wealth and income inequality is the great moral issue of our time, it is the great economic issue of our time and it is the great political issue of our time. And it is the great political issue of our time, Sanders roared, before thousands of supporters in Burlington, the liberal city he once served as mayor.

‘Enough is enough,” Sanders said, warning he was putting the “top 1 percent”  – the biggest beneficiaries of what he says is an immoral economy skewed against the poor, on notice.

“To the billionaire class I say your game has got to end,” he said.  “This great nation and its government belongs to all of the people and not to a handful of billionaires, their super PACs and their lobbyists,” Sanders said, his aspiring voice echoing across a placid Lake Champlain, with the Adirondacks etched on the horizon.

Sanders, who trails Clinton in most polls by around 50 percent, is the longest of long-shot candidates as his politics sits well to the left of the mainstream of the Democratic Party, let alone most of the rest of American voters.

At the present time, Bernie Sanders is sitting on 14 percent of the vote.  Martin O’Malley is sitting on 1 percent of the vote.

On paper, Martin O’Malley should be a serious contender for the Democratic presidential nomination.

But on paper, the Washington Nationals should have won the World Series.  And campaigns, like sporting contests, have to be fought in the real world.  And, in that world, O’Malley is basically an asterisk – or at least being treated that way by the media.  His official announcement recently did not make up of a note or notice.

His announcement in Baltimore delivered in shirtsleeves, hit all the liberal talking points, but O’Malley has a way of just reading his speeches and there were few emotional high points.

His media drought is partly because Hillary Clinton is a million miles ahead.  It’s partly because Bernie Sanders – who might be viewed as more or a gadfly candidate – has stolen the spotlight.  And, it’s partly his own fault.

O’Malley is a careful and cautious guy, and that doesn’t make him an inspiring figure.  He has been highly reticent about attacking Hillary, limiting himself to some veiled jabs.  And when you do that, you forfeit the coverage you might otherwise get for taking on the front-runner.  And you fuel suspicions that you are just running to raise your profile and maybe land a job in the next administration.

Get Into The Swing Of Summer Safety

Outdoor portrait of a cute young black girl playing with a swin
(NAPSI)—Known as “trauma season” among public health and medical professionals, summer is a time when serious injuries and unintentional deaths increase dramatically among children. Statistics show that 40 percent of all injury-related emergency room visits happen between the months of May and August. Fortunately, many of these injuries can be prevented with a few simple precautions.
“Sustaining a serious injury can be a life-altering event for a child,” said Dale Stauss, chairman of the Board of Directors for Shriners Hospitals for Children®. “We see patients every day with injuries caused by accidents, and we are committed to raising awareness about how to stay safe this summer.”
As experts in the treatment of pediatric orthopaedic conditions, spinal cord injuries and burns, Shriners Hospitals for Children provides critical, surgical and rehabilitative care to children, regardless of the families’ ability to pay.
Shriners Hospitals encourages families to take these simple precautions to enjoy a safe, injury-free summer.
Playground 101
• Choose playgrounds that are appropriate for their age and offer shock-absorbing surfaces.
• Teach children that pushing and shoving can result in accidents and injuries.
• Remind kids to use the slide one at a time and to wait until it’s completely clear before taking their turn. Teach them to always face forward with their legs straight in front of them and to never slide down headfirst.
• Remind children to swing sitting down. Encourage them to wait until the swing stops before getting off and to be careful when walking in front of moving swings.
Make A Safe Splash
• Teach children to never swim alone or go near water without an adult present.
• Give children your undivided attention when they are swimming or are near any body of water.
• Always jump in feet first to check the depth before diving into any body of water.
• Never dive in the shallow end of the pool or into above-ground pools.
Fun On The Water
• Always have children wear a U.S. Coast Guard-approved, properly fitted life jacket while on a boat, around an open body of water or when participating in water sports.
• Educate yourself. According to the Coast Guard, 86 percent of boating accident deaths involve boaters who have not completed a safety course.
• Always check water conditions and forecasts before going out on the water.
Mowing Matters
• Teach children to never play on or around a lawn mower, even when it is not in use. They should never be permitted to walk beside, in front of or behind a moving mower.
• Children under 6 years of age should be kept inside the home while you are mowing.
• Children should be at least 12 years of age before operating a push lawn mower and at least 16 years of age before operating a riding lawn mower.
Fire Safety Simplified
• Teach kids to never play with matches, gasoline, lighter fluid or lighters. Make a habit of placing these items up and away from young children.
• Do not leave children unattended near grills, campfires, fire pits or bonfires. Always have a bucket of water or fire extinguisher nearby.
• Take your child to a doctor or hospital immediately if he or she is injured in a fire or by fireworks.
Should an injury occur, the physicians and staff of Shriners Hospitals can help. To find out more about the treatments available, visit

Getting Screened For Viral Hepatitis May Help to Save Your Life

Hepatitis

Getting Screened For Viral Hepatitis May Help to Save Your Life
by Chana A. Rabiner, Ph.D.

(NAPSI)—There’s good news for the millions of Americans at risk for a potentially fatal medical condition, viral hepatitis. The simple step of medical screening can lead to lifesaving treatment.
A Collection Of Diseases
Viral hepatitis is actually a collection of very serious diseases. By definition, hepatitis means “liver inflammation,” and viral hepatitis is a general name for five unrelated viruses infecting the liver. These viruses can either be acute or chronic, with the most common being hepatitis A, B and C.
When the condition is chronic and left untreated, it can lead to scarring or damage to the liver or, in some cases, liver cancer. In fact, viral hepatitis is not only the leading cause of liver cancer but it is also the prime reason a person may need a liver transplant.
In the United States, nearly 4.5 million people are infected with viral hepatitis, with just over 3 million infected with hepatitis C. In addition, just over 1 million are infected with hepatitis B.
Unfortunately, most people with the condition don’t know that they are infected; people can be infected for decades without ever having symptoms or feeling sick.
While viral hepatitis can be acquired in a number of different ways, and can impact or infect anyone, the most common way to be infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) and hepatitis B virus (HBV) is through contact with the blood or bodily fluids of an infected person.
Those Most At Risk
Research shows that hepatitis C disproportionately impacts two groups of people: those who were born between 1945 and 1965 and those who use drugs through injection (IDU).
People who were born between 1945 and 1965 are five times more likely to be infected with hepatitis C than other age groups. This is why the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the United States Preventive Services Task Force recommend a one-time testing for hepatitis C for people born during that period.
In addition to those in this age group, the intersection of behavioral health disorders and viral hepatitis is quite profound, with 40 to 70 percent of injection drug users chronically infected with HCV and up to 11 percent chronically infected with HBV.
Moreover, those who inject drugs currently account for 60 to 70 percent of new hepatitis infections in the United States. One reason for this is that hepatitis C infects at a much greater rate than the other diseases that are transmitted through injection drug use, such as HIV. This happens because the virus can live longer outside the body than those other diseases can. In fact, it can live for days on the paraphernalia used to inject drugs, including syringes, cotton and cookers.
Several other behavioral health disorders lead to increased risk for getting hepatitis. For instance, approximately 20 percent and 23 percent of people with serious mental illnesses (SMI) are infected with HCV and HBV, respectively, while between 14 percent and 36 percent of those who misuse/abuse alcohol are infected with HCV. Addressing these behavioral health disorders can also help stop the spread of viral hepatitis.
Screening Can Save Lives
Numerous resources exist to help you assess your risk for hepatitis. The first step is to find a place to get tested. The next step is to learn more about hepatitis and how to prevent infection. Doing so can be lifesaving, as there are effective treatments for hepatitis that can mitigate the effects of the disease. In fact, there are new treatments for hepatitis C that can, in some cases, even cure it.
Another resource is a publication from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) called “Take Action Against Hepatitis C: For People in Recovery From Mental Illness or Addiction”. This booklet presents basic information about hepatitis C for people with mental illness or substance use disorders.
Knowing your HCV status can help to save your life. To learn more, visit www.knowmorehepatitis.org or the SAMHSA online store at http://store.samhsa,gov.
Rabiner is a Senior Public Health Advisor for the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration.
SAMHSA, the agency that leads public health efforts to advance the behavioral health of the nation to reduce the impact of substance abuse and mental illness on America’s communities, offers a variety of resources, including information and treatment.
