BLACK HISTORY MONTH AT THE LIBRARY
TODAY, at the Smithfield Library at the 10 a.m., Birmingham foot soldiers Gwendolyn Sanders-Gamble and Janice Kelsey will present a copy of a New York Fire Department 1963 resolution that’s been lost for more than 50 years. When the NYC Fire Department discovered in 2013 that Birmingham citizens never knew about the resolution, the fire department presented another resolution to Sanders-Gamble and Kelsey in 2014. The two women will present a copy of the resolution to the Smithfield Library during a ceremony today. The Birmingham Fire Department and other officials are slated to attend.
Race relations and Birmingham native Tanner Colby’s book “Some of My Best Friends Are Black: The Strange Story of Integration in America’’ will be discussed at three Birmingham libraries as part of Magic City Crossings, a citywide dialogue project led by REV Birmingham’s Community Affairs Committee, the Bethesda Life Center and Joyce Vance, U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Alabama. Aunt: Bobbi Kristina is ‘Doing Better’

0

Bobbi Kristina BrownFrom Wire Reports

Bobby Brown’s attorney blasts ‘false’ speculations that Bobbi Kristina Brown’s family may take her off life support Wednesday, the third anniversary of Whitney Houston’s death. Police now confirm there’s a criminal investigation into what happened.
“I was very numb when I saw her,” says Leolah Brown, Bobbi Kristina Brown’s aunt, in a sit-down interview with Atlanta’s Fox 5 TV station.
Leolah, speaking on Tuesday afternoon to Fox 5’s Aungelique Proctor, recalled how hard it was to see her niece when she first went to the hospital. And it has been a difficult time for the family as they stay gathered around Bobbi Kristina in Emory University Hospital. Bobbi Kristina has been on a ventilator since Jan. 31, when she was found face down in a bathtub.
“It’s been very, very painful for everybody. Mainly Bobby, because that’s his baby,” she said of her brother, Bobby Brown.
Leolah went on to say she’s “hopeful’ about Krissi’s health. “There are so many signs showing us that she will be OK. Krissi is fine.”
She is still on life support, but is she Improving? “Yes, ma’am,” answered Leolah. “She’s opening her eyes. Krissi is doing well right now. She is.”
She wouldn’t comment on reports that there are injuries to Bobbi Kristina’s face.
But Leolah also took a few minutes to talk about how she felt Nick Gordon, whom Krissi has said is her husband, has not been a good influence.
Why? “I have my reasons,” said Leolah. She added that she believes he will be charged in the criminal investigation surrounding what led to the 911 call for Krissi. “Oh yes, 110 percent. … I HOPE that he will be charged … Soon.”
Leolah also said she “didn’t know Nick,” despite the fact that he lived for a time with Whitney Houston and Bobby Brown when Krissi was little and there have been reports that he was like an adopted son. “I never saw Nick.” She adds that they are “not married. No, ma’am.”
Nick Gordon has not addressed any reports.
One thing Leolah wants people to know for sure: “Krissi would never do anything to herself. Everybody in the family knows that. There’s no doubt in my mind. Krissi loved life too much!.”
As for tension at the hospital, Leolah said, “There’s no tension between Browns and Houstons. Everybody’s trying to stay strong and deal with this.” She added, “Bobby wants Krissi to rest. … She needs to heal.”
Leolah said there’s no truth to the idea that today would be the day Krissi is taken off the ventilator because it’s the day that her mom died three years ago.
“No,” she said, adding, “Bobby’s calling the shots.”
She urged that the “negativity” stop surrounding the family and Bobbi Kristina. “She is doing better. So let’s be hopeful. … I’m asking people to pray.”
At the same time, another family member, cousin Shayne Brown, also sounds hopeful about Krissi. “She’s progressing,” Shayne tells ET’s David Begnaud. “She’s getting better. We just ask for people to continue to pray.”

Kanye West Almost Pulls a Kanye on Best Album Winner Beck

0

kanyeBy SANDY COHEN
AP Entertainment Writer
LOS ANGELES – Kanye West almost pulled another Kanye at the Grammy Awards.
West briefly popped up on stage as Beck accepted the album of the year award on Sunday for “Morning Phase,” beating out expected victor Beyoncé.
West smiled and quickly jumped down, but not before getting guffaws from Beyoncé and Jay Z.
Kanye famously got involved in an award presentation in 2009 when Taylor Swift beat Beyoncé at MTV’s Video Music Awards.
Beck seemed as surprised as the rest of the audience when he won the award Sunday and appeared to be looking around for help.
Recording academy president Neil Portnow said the almost-Kanye moment was part of the excitement of a live television show.
“It’s unpredictable,” he said. “You don’t know what’s going to happen… That turned out to be a fun moment at the end of the day.”
But it wasn’t such a fun moment later backstage when a very serious West told E! Entertainment that Beck should have given his award to Beyoncé.
“When you keep on diminishing art, and not respecting the craft, and smacking people in the face after they deliver monumental feats of music, you’re disrespectful to inspiration.”
He said of the Grammys “want real artists to keep coming back, they need to stop playing with us.”

LOS ANGELES – OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network will serve up new episodes of the NAACP Image Award-winning docu-series “Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s” and the season premiere of new docu-series “2 Fat 2 Fly” on February 28 as part of the network’s popular Saturday night programming lineup.
“Welcome to Sweetie Pie’s,” starring acclaimed soul food chef and Sweetie Pie’s restaurant owner Miss Robbie Montgomery will air at 9 p.m. ET/PT, followed by “2 Fat 2 Fly,” introducing best friends Ramone Dickerson and Corey Simmons as they navigate their small-town food truck business of the same name at 10 p.m. ET/PT.
On an all-new season of “Welcome To Sweetie Pie’s,” viewers will rejoin the “first family of soul food,” following Miss Robbie and her son Tim through the ups and downs of running their rapidly expanding soul food empire, along with a few new faces getting schooled in the art of soul food.  With the fate of the Beale Street restaurant still undecided, Tim hustles to open the family’s first drive-thru location in St. Louis. Seeking to right a past wrong, Miss Robbie heads back in the studio to record a song she was forbidden to sing back in the ‘60s. Later, in an unforgettable episode, the family faces the civil unrest in Ferguson following the shooting of Michael Brown, and Tim plays a key role in bringing the community together. Through it all, the entire Sweetie Pie’s family serves up every situation with a perfect mix of humor, drama, heart, and soul.
“2 Fat 2 Fly” introduces Corey and Ramone, two best friends and creative geniuses who have big dreams for 2 Fat 2 Fly, their small-town food truck business. The Columbia, South Carolina duo invented a revolutionary twist on a culinary classic: stuffed chicken wings. Their secret stuffing technique puts savory dishes like jambalaya and mac & cheese inside a chicken wing. For Corey and Ramone, this isn’t just another food trend, it’s their meal ticket and chance to strike it rich. Unfortunately, after three years, Corey and Ramone are still barely scraping by.
When Ramone’s father threatens to repossess their food truck, “The Fonz,” for lack of payment on his investment, the guys are forced to make a bold decision to spread their wings and potentially move to a bigger market. Like all small business owners, along the way they face unbelievable financial and personal struggles and ultimately, the business becomes a true test of Corey and Ramone’s partnership. Through the good and bad times, they hold their dreams close and with every failure a new idea emerges, another obstacle to overcome, and even more laughs.
