The New Face of the Birmingham Water Works

0
Rick Jackson
Rick Jackson

When it comes to PR, he’s on top of it! Since joining the Birmingham Water Works Board in January of 2014, Rick Jackson has hit the ground running without any anticipation of ever stopping with his fresh new ideas and perspectives on marketing the state’s largest water utility. He serves as the Spokesperson and Public Relations Specialist for Birmingham Water Works.
Prior to coming on board with BWWB, Jackson spent several years as a television news broadcaster. He worked as a general assignment news reporter for the NBC and FOX affiliate in Tupelo, Miss. prior to spending five and a half years as a morning reporter/anchor at Birmingham’s CBS affiliate (WIAT-42). He’s an award winning journalist, having been honored for his feature reporting and strong presence on breaking /spot news stories. He says he thought long and hard about this major career change.
“I knew it was time for a change. I was a bit nervous about leaving television to take on this new venture, but I must admit, it was one of the best decisions of my life. Television will always be my passion and first love, but PR is a whole new world that I’m very excited about, “Jackson says.
Just within his first year with the Water Works, he’s managed to bring in new ideas with employee engagement and strengthening the communications with their customer base. He started a new program, “Water Works Water Boy” in which he travels to different high schools in the area to speak with athletic teams about the importance of staying hydrated while presenting them with a 10-gallon water cooler. He’s also put his expertise in television to work by producing several positive videos for the utility company. Now, he’s looking forward to launching his next big project, BWWB-TV.
“I’m super elated about BWWB-TV. There are more details to come, but I will say that it’s basically an in-house news powerhouse and it’s all about BWWB. We have to keep our employees and customers engaged. We have to tell our own story. Send our own message. I’m just so fortunate to have a general manager and board of directors that are so supportive of my wild ideas.”
He says his main job is being a dad. He enjoys every moment he has with his 3- year-old son, Ethan. He’s also a notable member of Iota Phi Theta Fraternity, Incorporated- one of the nine historically African American Greek-letter organizations of the National Pan-Hellenic Council.
So, is returning to television completely out of the question for Jackson?
“I loved being a journalist. So, I can’t say that I’ll never go back to TV. However, being on this job makes it very hard to consider. I enjoy what I do here,” says Jackson.

Through the Good Roots program, the foundation helps communities plant more trees and take advantage of their multiple benefits.”

Birmingham City Councilor Steven Hoyt Hosts Annual District 8 Town Hall Meeting to Address Safety Concerns

0

Councilor Steven Hoyt BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – As new businesses continue to come to the District 8 Area, Councilor Steven Hoyt wants to ensure that safety concerns aren’t an issue for residents. To address those concerns, Councilor Hoyt hosted a town hall meeting Monday at the Birmingham Crossplex. Residents were given the opportunity to hear about updates concerning their community in particular plans to relocate fire station 24 located in Bellview Heights to the West Precinct located across from the Crossplex. Councilor Hoyt believes that the relocation is vital to the safety of the firefighters and he hoped that constituents would get a valuable understanding of the strategy in place.
“It’s important that as a councilor I work with communities and law enforcement to ensure that there is a consistent relationship between the two entities, so that safety issues are adequately addressed,” Councilor Hoyt said. “I know that Chief Charles Gordon will help shed light on the restructuring of fire station 24 and discuss why the West Precinct is the best option for the new site.”
Councilor Hoyt added that this town hall meeting would be the first of many as he looks to continually engage residents on plans for their district. In addition to new businesses coming to the area, a number of athletes will soon be visiting District 8 for athletic conferences that will be held at the Crossplex. In March, the City of Birmingham will host the 2015 NCAA Division II Indoor Track & Field National Championship.  This championship will feature the top track and field programs and athletes in the country.
For more information on upcoming events in District 8, please contact the Office of Councilor Steven Hoyt at 205.254.2363.

BBA Hosts Distinguished Panel on European Union, U.S. international Trade Agreement

0

Jo BonnerFormer Congressman Jo Bonner, who now serves as Vice Chancellor for Government Relations and Economic Development for the University of Alabama System, spoke during a half-day seminar that was hosted by Birmingham Business Alliance recently on trade agreements, including the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership, and the benefits to Birmingham area companies. Bonner said now is a good time for exporters to voice the importance of trade agreements between Europe and Asia, since President Obama made international trade a priority in his State of the Union address this week and many across party lines agreed. He said discussions around trade agreements need to emphasize job creation and an increased tax base so more Americans will rally around international trade efforts.
Following Bonner’s remarks, local, state and national trade officials, as well as local exporters, explored exporting issues and the opportunities for companies under trade agreements.
