Oprah Winfrey and Ava DuVernay Create New Original Drama Series for OWN

0

OprahWinfrey to appear in recurring role

LOS ANGELES – Oprah Winfrey and award-winning filmmaker Ava DuVernay (“Selma”) have joined together to create a new original drama series for OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network.
Inspired by the acclaimed novel “Queen Sugar,” DuVernay is set to write, direct and executive produce the project, marking her first television drama series. Winfrey will executive produce and appear in multiple episodes in a recurring role. This marks the first time that Winfrey will act in a series for OWN. Production is scheduled to begin later this year.
Adapted from the celebrated first-time novel “Queen Sugar” by Natalie Baszile, the contemporary series will chronicle a spirited woman who leaves her upscale Los Angeles lifestyle behind to claim an inheritance from her recently departed father – an 800-acre sugar cane farm in the heart of Louisiana. Her world and identity are turned upside down as she and her teenage daughter attempt to navigate a new and very different environment while rebuilding their farm from scratch. She is met with curiosity and community, with resistance and romance. It isn’t long before a transformation begins and she realizes that she’s been living a lot farther from her Southern roots than mere miles.
“I loved this book and immediately saw it as a series for OWN,” said Oprah Winfrey. “The story’s themes of reinventing your life, parenting alone, family connections and conflicts, and building new relationships are what I believe will connect our viewers to this show.”
“From the moment I was introduced to the book, I was captivated by the idea of a modern woman wrestling with identity, family, culture and the echoes of history,” said DuVernay. “To bring this kind of storytelling to life alongside Oprah for her network is wildly wonderful. I’m excited about what’s in store.”
Winfrey and DuVernay recently worked together on the Academy Award nominated feature film “Selma,” which chronicles the historic 1965 voting rights campaign led by Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.  DuVernay directed the acclaimed film, which is produced by Oprah Winfrey, Plan B, Christian Colson and Pathé. Winfrey has a supporting role in the film portraying civil rights protestor Annie Lee Cooper.
DuVernay is the first African-American woman nominated for Golden Globe and Critics Choice Awards for Best Director for “Selma,” in addition to Independent Spirit and NAACP Image Award nominations. She won the Best Director Prize at the Sundance Film Festival in 2012 for her acclaimed feature “Middle of Nowhere.” Her previous narrative and documentary work includes “I Will Follow, “Venus Vs.,” “My Mic Sounds Nice” and “This is The Life.”  Prior to her directorial career, DuVernay worked as a film marketer and publicist for more than 14 years.

Wednesday, February 18, 8p.m./ET – Vivica A. Fox

ASU Professor Writes Chapter in New Book About ‘Fat Acceptance’

ASU Professor daufin pic
Dr. Rev. E.K. Daufin

Alabama State University communications professor Dr. Rev. E.K. Daufin is the author of a chapter in a new book, “The Politics of Size: Perspectives From the Fat Acceptance Movement,”  published by Praeger Publishers Inc.
Daufin’s chapter is “Black Women in Fat Activism.”
The book supplies readers a frank overview of the issues surrounding how to deal with the many levels of discrimination against fat people – and reframes the discussion about obesity from a “diet and weight loss industry driven medical issue” to a social and political one.
Daufin, a national expert about weight as well as race, gender and class in the media, was invited by the editor of the book to write the chapter after seeing Daufin’s works on the subject. The chapter itself takes a look at what Black women face as a result of weight stigma.
“Eighty to 90 percent of any person’s weight is caused by genetics. The reasons for the higher obesity rate for African-American women are also genetic, along with other factors including socioeconomics and the environment,” Daufin said. “But even more women of color are joining the front lines of activism in changing the unintentional racist ‘war on obesity’ to the ‘war on weight stigma’ instead.”
Daufin said the essays in the book serve to correct misinformation about obesity and fat people that is commonly accepted by the general public, such as the idea that “fat” and “healthy” are mutually exclusive. Subject matter covered includes fat-friendly workplace policies; fat-dating experiences; and the intersections of being fat and also a person of color, a person with disabilities, a transgender person, or a member of another sub-group of society.
An educator, performance artist and a social activist, Daufin is the founder of Love Your Body; Love Yourself workshops. Her work has been published in several academic journals, newspapers and magazines, and she has a chapter in three other anthologies. Daufin also has been featured on radio and television programs. She is a columnist for the international nonprofit Association for Size and Health Diversity’s online “HAES® Matters.”
Daufin graduated from The Ohio State University where she earned her Ph.D. in mass communication and film.

Birmingham Lieutenant Sean Edwards states when it comes to safety, “Citizens should always be aware of their surroundings when outside their homes, never open doors to strangers, and immediately notify police when a suspicious person or vehicle is either on their property or in front of their property. If you see something, say something. Never hesitate to call police.”
So what should a person do if they are invaded? Here are tips taken from Military. com that should be useful:
Five Home Defense Tactics That Will Help You Survive A Violent Home Invasion
1. You need to develop a code word that will tell your entire family that it’s time to spring into action. You don’t need to make up some kind of secret code. The word “ESCAPE” works very well and is simple and straight to the point. Forget about “Red Wolf” and use something simple.
2. Designate a “safe room” in your home where everyone can go to at the same time. This room should be stocked with several specific items that will help you survive the upcoming fight. The list of items isn’t that long, but the list is outside the scope of this article. The one thing that you must have in this room is a phone that can be used to call the police.
3. Do not, under any circumstances, leave the safe room. If you have your family in the room with you, resist the urge to put on your cape and fight the invaders single handedly.
4. Develop a “fatal funnel”. If you are using a gun for home defense, position yourself in a corner of the safe room that is on the opposite side of the door. This will give you the maximum amount of time to decide if you’re going to shoot because you’ll be the last thing the intruders see when they burst through the door. In this instance, you  have the advantage because they will have to make an assessment of the room before they make a move. You only have to decide if you’re going to shoot or not. You will know that it;s either the police coming to your rescue or the bad guys coming to harm you. Just make sure you don’t shoot the police.
5. Stay in the safe room until the police arrive, no matter how long it takes. Even if you are pretty sure the home invasion is finished and the intruders have left, do not leave the safe room. You can’t be sure that the attackers aren’t lying in wait to take your family by force to hold as hostages or cause harm. Stay in the room until the police have cleared the house and tell you to come out before you decide the home invasion is over.

Upon arrival, officers found the victim sitting in his black Mercury SUV suffering from a gunshot wound to the head area. AG Announces Arrest of Bessemer Woman on Charges of Conspiring with Bessemer Pharmacist to Defraud Medicaid Agency

MONTGOMERY – Attorney General Luther Strange announced the arrest of Sonia Judd Coleman, 34, of Bessemer, on four counts of filing false claims with the Alabama Medicaid Agency and one count of first-degree theft of property. Coleman was arrested this morning by Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office deputies.
The Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit presented evidence to the January 2015 term of the Montgomery County grand jury, resulting in an indictment* charging Coleman for her role in the filing of numerous false claims for payment to the Alabama Medicaid Agency totaling over $50,000.
It is alleged that Bessemer pharmacist Alan Bruce Connell conspired with Coleman, whose minor child suffers from a terminal illness, to bill the Alabama Medicaid Agency for expensive medications the child required but were not dispensed by Connell. As part of the scheme, it is alleged that on several occasions Coleman took her child’s prescriptions to Connell, who submitted a claim with the Alabama Medicaid Agency for reimbursement. Coleman would receive cash payment for the prescriptions. A review of pharmacy’s records revealed that, during the time period in question, Connell did not have enough of the medication in stock to be able to dispense the amount he billed the Alabama Medicaid Agency. Connell was arrested on the same charges yesterday.
No additional information about the investigation or the alleged crimes may be disclosed at this time.
The case was investigated by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit after being referred for investigation by the Program Integrity Division of the Alabama Medicaid Agency. Medicaid Fraud is an unclassified felony with a maximum possible prison sentence of five years. Theft of property in the first degree is a class “B” felony, which carries a possible prison sentence of two to 20 years in the Department of Corrections.
Attorney General Strange commended his Medicaid Fraud Control Unit for their steadfast investigation of this case. He also thanked the Alabama Board of Pharmacy for assistance.

*An indictment is merely an accusation. The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

AG Strange Announces Arrest of Ohio Man for Medicaid Fraud and Identity Theft

MONTGOMERY – Attorney General Luther Strange announced the arrest of Darnell Davon Nash, 30, of Cleveland, Ohio, on 69 counts of filing false claims with the Alabama Medicaid Agency and one count of trafficking in stolen identities.
The Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit presented evidence to the August 2014 term of the Montgomery County grand jury, resulting in an indictment* charging Nash for his role in the filing of numerous false claims for payment to the Alabama Medicaid Agency and being in possession of identifying information of  approximately 25 Alabama Medicaid recipients. Nash currently is in federal custody on an unrelated fraud conviction and is being transported to Alabama by the U.S. Marshal Service. A trial date is set for March 9, 2015.
It is alleged that Nash, along with a co-defendant, established a fictitious business named Chase Farms Group and enrolled the business as an Alabama Medicaid provider. They then obtained, by deceit, the Medicaid Provider ID of a north Alabama physician’s office, by stating they ran a counseling service and wanted the physician’s office to be their medical provider. The physician’s office became suspicious when they attempted to contact Nash, who had used an alias, to inquire about the partnership.  The scheme also involved the distribution of flyers to Medicaid recipients throughout the Birmingham area, advertising assistance with obtaining government subsidies. As victims would call the number provided and give their identifying information, Nash and his co-defendant would then bill Medicaid for alleged services provided by the physician’s office using the stolen information.
The case was investigated by the Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit. Medicaid Fraud is an unclassified felony with a maximum possible prison sentence of five years. Trafficking in stolen identities is a class B felony, which carries a possible prison sentence of two to 20 years imprisonment for a first offense and up to life in prison based on criminal history. Nash is facing a possible sentence of 20 years to life imprisonment.
Attorney General Strange commended his Medicaid Fraud Control Unit for their steadfast investigation of this case. He also thanked the Birmingham office of the U.S. Secret Service, the U.S. Marshal Service, the Ohio Office of the United States Department of Labor and the Ohio Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit.
*An indictment is merely an accusation.  The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.
