Nobody beats the Biz…not even a diagnosis of diabetes, if the rapper has anything to say about it.
Biz Markie, 50, told ABC News that he’s dropped 140 pounds over the last three years after being diagnosed with type 2 diabetes.
“I wanted to live,” he told the network. “Since I have to be a diabetic, if I didn’t make the changes, it was going to make the diabetes worse. I’m trying to get off [the diabetes medication]. The way you gotta do it is lose the weight. I’m off half my meds, I just got to get off the rest.”
At the time of the diagnosis, doctors told Markie that he was going to have to start living a healthier lifestyle if he wanted to overcome the disease.
“They said I could lose my feet,” he said. “They said I could lose body parts. A lot of things could happen.”
Markie’s new lifestyle hasn’t just been a boon to his health, it’s also made him a better performer.
“When I used to be on stage, I used to be out of breath, I couldn’t walk that far,” he said. “Now, I got so much energy. I can do a whole show.”
Biz hopes to drop 10 more pounds next year.

Divorce rates in the United States continue to rapidly climb to astronomical levels. Most married couples are turning their I do to I don’t. Knowing the situation is dire, Sybil D. Green has made help available in her booklet, Matters of the Heart. Offering time-tested advice, it can be an essential asset when mending the sacred union of matrimony.
By now you are probably pondering, “What makes Sybil D. Green an expert.”  Upon enduring the experience of her own divorce (after twenty years of marriage) she was divinely inspired to write this book. She also witnessed the love her parents shared which lasted until her mother passed, some forty-nine years later. Likewise, Green is now married (happily) and she is a living testament that the methods listed in Matters of the Heart actually work.
Matters of the Heart is based upon biblical doctrine with a number of verses to validate its claim. It also expounds upon a six point system that’s to be used in order to save couples from divorce. Knowing what you want from your mate, groundwork and the need for it, yours, mine and our roles, the home fire and how to keep it burning are just a few of the addressed issues. No topic is left undone as even intimacy and the bedroom are discussed. Also, a certain amount of witticism is incorporated, one referencing how to handle the seven year itch–“don’t scratch.” All this is done in an open dialog that encourages couples to be open and honest with each other.
Sybil D. Green has put on paper some profound wisdom that troubled couples could benefit from. The lyrics in an old song state it best – “If you want to keep me –You better know how to treat me.” Green is a firm believer that this applies to not only men, but women as well.

The ultimate in avant-garde jazz is found in (R)anthems, the latest offering by four guys who go by the moniker Spoke. First off, you are probably wondering (just as I was) — what’s up with the album title? Let me explain.
The quartet states “(R)anthems is both musical rant and anthem. Unlike most rants, this one is deeply steeped in fun, spiced with Salsa, and sizzling with Pop.” This description alone is enough to get fingers popping and hips swaying. Long story short — Spoke has produced a wonderful collection that includes a few priceless interpretations.
Track Listing: Ranthem; Tell Me Something Good; Invisible Lady; Blackbird; The Shanghai Salsa; Shepherd; I Only Have Eyes For You; Cancion Para Mi Madre; Clube Da Esquina; Move; Pure Imagination; Worry Later.
Album personnel: Andy Hunter, trombone; Justin Wood, alto saxophone, flute; Dan Loomis, contrabass; Danny Fischer, drums; Ito Arguinzoni, congas (5, 8).

“Big Island’s Jazz Goddess” Maggie Herron is a proven vocalist extraordinaire. Her sophomore release, Good Thing certainly lives up to its title and literally knocks fans off their feet. It is quite impressive.
Maggie Herron possesses vocals that are the epitome of sultry. She is a rarity in today’s jazz scene and a welcome change from the standard. She has been a fixture in Hawaii’s music scene for some twenty plus years. Luckily for aficionados the Aloha state has final decided to share this accomplished entertainer. On Good Thing, Herron covers a few originals with some remarkable tunes from the Great American Songbook. She is a proven jewel with an illuminating future.
Track Listings: Things Could Be Better; The Very Thought of You; Je T’aimerais; Straighten’ Up and Fly Right; Cake; Woodstock; You Call It Madness I Call It Love; Good Thing; Baby Baby All the Time; The More I See You; Moon River; Le Printemps est Arrive’; Body and Soul.

Stop The Snore: Sleep Apnea Action Urgent For Those At Risk

Stop SnoringLife-threatening sleep illness afflicts at least 25 million Americans and counting

(NAPSA) – The nation’s sleep experts agree: obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) – a potentially life-threatening disease involving episodes of complete or partial airway obstruction during sleep – is dangerously on the rise. The National Healthy Sleep Awareness Project is urging anyone with symptoms of OSA to pledge to stop the snore and talk to a doctor about sleep apnea.
“Research shows that the number of sleep apnea sufferers continues to increase – the disease afflicts at least 25 million American adults, and most of them remain untreated, increasing their risk of cardiac disease, hypertension, Type 2 diabetes and obesity,” said Dr. Timothy Morgenthaler, president of the American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) and a national spokesperson for the Healthy Sleep Project, a collaboration by the AASM, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the Sleep Research Society (SRS). “Fortunately, many of the damaging effects of sleep apnea can be stopped, and even reversed, through diagnosis and treatment by a board-certified sleep specialist.”
How do you know if you should talk to a doctor about OSA? According to the Healthy Sleep Project, here are five warning signs for sleep apnea:

Snoring. Besides being a nuisance to your bed partner or roommate, loud and frequent snoring is a common symptom of sleep apnea. While not everyone who snores has this sleep illness, snoring is a warning sign that should be taken seriously.
Choking or gasping during sleep. When snoring is paired with choking, gasping or silent breathing pauses during sleep, it’s a strong indicator of sleep apnea.
Fatigue or daytime sleepiness. “Sleep apnea can leave you waking in the morning feeling tired, even after a full night’s sleep,” said Morgenthaler. “Excessive daytime sleepiness often occurs because sleep apnea causes numerous arousals throughout the night, and your body isn’t getting the quality sleep it needs.”
Obesity. An adult with a body mass index (BMI) of 30 or higher is considered to be obese, and the risk of sleep apnea increases with the amount of excess body weight.
High blood pressure. A staggering 67 million Americans have high blood pressure, which is about one in every three adults. Between 30 and 40 percent of adults with high blood pressure also have sleep apnea, and getting treatment for sleep apnea is a proven means of decreasing blood pressure.

If these symptoms describe you, then you have a high risk for OSA. If you’re ready to talk to a doctor about sleep apnea, the Healthy Sleep Project encourages you to visit stopsnoringpledge.org to pledge to stop the snore and find a local sleep specialist at an AASM-accredited sleep center.
“A common misconception is that sleep apnea only affects older, overweight men,” said Morgenthaler. “This widely-held assumption is wrong: anyone can have sleep apnea, regardless of gender, age or body type – even if you’re not overweight.”
Your doctor may decide you need an objective sleep study, which will provide the data needed to make an accurate diagnosis. Once diagnosed, the most commonly recommended treatment for sleep apnea is continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy, which provides gently pressurized air through a mask, keeping your airway open and making it easier to breathe. For patients who are unable to tolerate CPAP, or who seek alternatives, knowledgeable sleep specialists may be able to offer other treatments.
“Obstructive sleep apnea is a chronic disease that has a negative impact on the health and well-being of millions of people in the U.S.,” said Janet B. Croft, PhD, senior chronic disease epidemiologist in CDC’s Division of Population Health. “It is important to discuss the warning signs for sleep apnea with your doctor to determine if you are at risk.”

A life-threatening sleep illness afflicts at least 25 million Americans and counting –but can be treated.

Tips from IRS for Year-End Gifts to Charity

0

IRS VolunteersWASHINGTON ― The Internal Revenue Service today reminded individuals and businesses making year-end gifts to charity that several important tax law provisions have taken effect in recent years. Some of the changes taxpayers should keep in mind include:

Rules for Charitable Contributions of Clothing and Household Items
Household items include furniture, furnishings, electronics, appliances and linens. Clothing and household items donated to charity generally must be in good used condition or better to be tax-deductible. A clothing or household item for which a taxpayer claims a deduction of over $500 does not have to meet this standard if the taxpayer includes a qualified appraisal of the item with the return.
Donors must get a written acknowledgement from the charity for all gifts worth $250 or more. It must include, among other things, a description of the items contributed.

Guidelines for Monetary Donations
A taxpayer must have a bank record or a written statement from the charity in order to deduct any donation of money, regardless of amount. The record must show the name of the charity and the date and amount of the contribution. Bank records include canceled checks, and bank, credit union and credit card statements. Bank or credit union statements should show the name of the charity, the date, and the amount paid. Credit card statements should show the name of the charity, the date, and the transaction posting date.
Donations of money include those made in cash or by check, electronic funds transfer, credit card and payroll deduction. For payroll deductions, the taxpayer should retain a pay stub, a Form W-2 wage statement or other document furnished by the employer showing the total amount withheld for charity, along with the pledge card showing the name of the charity.
These requirements for the deduction of monetary donations do not change the long-standing requirement that a taxpayer obtain an acknowledgment from a charity for each deductible donation (either money or property) of $250 or more. However, one statement containing all of the required information may meet both requirements.

Reminders
The IRS offers the following additional reminders to help taxpayers plan their holiday and year-end gifts to charity:

·         Qualified charities. Check that the charity is eligible. Only donations to eligible organizations are tax-deductible. Select Check, a searchable online tool available on IRS.gov, lists most organizations that are eligible to receive deductible contributions. In addition, churches, synagogues, temples, mosques and government agencies are eligible to receive deductible donations. That is true even if they are not listed in the tool’s database.

·         Year-end gifts. Contributions are deductible in the year made. Thus, donations charged to a credit card before the end of 2014 count for 2014, even if the credit card bill isn’t paid until 2015. Also, checks count for 2014 as long as they are mailed in 2014.

·         Itemize deductions. For individuals, only taxpayers who itemize their deductions on Form 1040 Schedule A can claim deductions for charitable contributions. This deduction is not available to individuals who choose the standard deduction. This includes anyone who files a short form (Form 1040A or 1040EZ). A taxpayer will have a tax savings only if the total itemized deductions (mortgage interest, charitable contributions, state and local taxes, etc.) exceed the standard deduction. Use the 2014 Form 1040 Schedule A to determine whether itemizing is better than claiming the standard deduction.

·         Record donations. For all donations of property, including clothing and household items, get from the charity, if possible, a receipt that includes the name of the charity, date of the contribution, and a reasonably-detailed description of the donated property. If a donation is left at a charity’s unattended drop site, keep a written record of the donation that includes this information, as well as the fair market value of the property at the time of the donation and the method used to determine that value. Additional rules apply for a contribution of $250 or more.

·         Special Rules. The deduction for a car, boat or airplane donated to charity is usually limited to the gross proceeds from its sale. This rule applies if the claimed value is more than $500. Form 1098-C or a similar statement, must be provided to the donor by the organization and attached to the donor’s tax return.

If the amount of a taxpayer’s deduction for all noncash contributions is over $500, a properly-completed Form 8283 must be submitted with the tax return.

Add Some Sparkle to Your Holiday Décor

LED Pinecone String Lights 2By Melinda Myers
Liven up your holiday décor with lights, a bit of glitz and some colorful blossoms this season.
Start by gathering greenery from your landscape. Use needled evergreens like pines and firs, broadleaf evergreens like boxwood, holly and evergreen magnolia as well as junipers and arborvitaes to create wreaths, swags, centerpieces and garland. And don’t forget to include cones, holly berries, crabapples and the bluish-colored fruit of junipers.
Be selective as you prune your trees and shrubs when collecting these materials. Use sharp bypass pruners that have two sharp blades and will make a clean cut that closes more quickly. Make your cuts above a healthy bud, where the branches join another branch, or back to the main trunk. Take only a few branches from each tree or shrub to maintain the plants’ beauty.
Place freshly cut greens in a cool location away from heaters, fireplaces and open flames. Set them on colorful fabric or paper to catch the sap and avoid damaging your woodwork and furnishings.
Check your greenery for freshness every few days. The needles, leaves and stems should bend, but not break. Replace dried greens with fresh materials.
Then brighten up the display with some cool burning LED lights. Create a mantle display or centerpiece with the help of LED pillar lights. Or add a string of LEDs to your garland. Look for something unusual like pine cone string lights (gardeners.com) to add sparkle and charm to your display.
If you have artificial greens that could use a facelift, add fresh berries, cones and seedpods for a more natural look. Increase the glitz with the help of silver and gold metallic paint or glitter. Paint milkweed, lotus and other pods and then tuck them into the greens. Painting allium seedheads white will add the appearance of flowery snowflakes in your indoor arrangements and outdoor container gardens.
And don’t forget the fresh flowers and flowering plants. Poinsettias are a long-time favorite, but you may want to change things up with Amaryllis, spring flowering bulbs and lily of the valley. Look for unusual varieties or combinations to increase your enjoyment. Combine large flowered amaryllis with small flowering bulbs like star of Bethlehem. Or go for a unique size shape or flower color like that of the Honeybee Amaryllis with its beautiful yellow flowers that are sure to brighten your days.
Add a few flowers to your greenery and houseplants for some instant color. Stick your greenery and flowers in dampened floral foam to create a long-lasting holiday centerpiece. Or place cut flowers in floral picks and set them in dish gardens and houseplants to brighten things up. Then swap out the flowers as they fade.
And consider making a few extra planters or centerpieces to give as holiday and hostess gifts this year.
Now is the time to put on your gardening shoes, grab the pruners and get started decorating for the holiday season ahead.

Former Heisman Trophy Winners Jameis Winston and Bo Jackson Linked to Future NFL Franchise in Birmimgham

0

Shakir MuhammadBy Shakir Muhammad

The 2013 Heisman Trophy winner Jameis Winston has sparked heated debates on the job in the street and in corporate suites over the possibility of playing for a future National Football League team in Birmingham. This new development would afford Metro-Birmingham area’s brightest star athlete a grand opportunity to shine professionally in his own hometown.
However, those debates grew to new stratospheric proportion during the aftermath of the BCS game. Winston’s spectacular game winning drive on the last possession of a hard fought contest has transformed those debates into a foregone conclusion. The question now is how soon Birmingham gets its own franchise for him to operate.
The linking of Winston and Jackson to a future NFL franchise in Alabama’s largest city makes perfect business sense to so many different people on so many different socio- economic levels:

1]  It will generate excitement and mass employment across every segment of the regional
economy immediately.
2]  It will boost civic pride and raise the level of expectation especially among Afro-American
youth in Birmingham exponentially.
3]  It will elevate the city’s national profile and give Metro-Birmingham’s rapidly growing
1.052 million pro football depraved fans a team they can come out to support and cheer for
en masse.
4]  It will have a unifying effect and make Amtrak accessible Birmingham a choice destination
for rabid sport fans from every nook and cranny throughout Alabama on game day.
5]  It will expand the boundary of broadcast TV and cable sport contracts for stations in
Alabama by far.
6]  Winston TV endorsements will increase sales and revenue for more Alabama
manufactured goods from autos to food products dramatically.
7]  It will repatriate billion of dollars in tax and revenue back to the city, state, local vendors
and businesses annually.

Birmingham already has the infrastructure and three of the four key building blocks that are essential to successfully attract and support a pro franchise. This includes a big pro style venue- Legion Field, a rapidly growing hardcore fan base and a young proven winner in Winston,  who possesses all the innate qualities and athletic ability that is required to justify building a pro franchise around. He has won a national championship, now he is poised to help bring a pro championship caliber football franchise to his hometown. The biggest challenge is to find a smart proactive owner or committed group of young forward thinking investors. Who has the financial power and guts to purchase a franchise, relocate it to Birmingham and position themselves to make Winston the club’s number #1 overall draft pick and franchise quarterback.
Bo Jackson knows the business of pro sports especially football and baseball. He has expressed interest in a number of business ventures in the Birmingham area.  He would be instrumental in using his clout and connections in the banking industry to assemble a group of financial investors to help seal the deal. It also remains to be seen whether he will join forces with former AU alumni Charles Barkely and Frank Thomas to help push this gigantic multi-billion dollar job producing project across the goal line. The good news is all interested parties still have a two year window to make it happen. This includes time to formulate plans, work out logistics, elicit public support and finalize a deal to construct a 100,000 thousand seat multi-purpose dome statium for the new franchise.
