Technology Key for SMBs Facing New World of Work

0

Techno(NAPSA) – For small – and midsize-business (SMB) owners, time is a precious commodity. They need to get more done with less time and fewer resources than bigger companies. The good news is, SMBs have access to affordable yet powerful technology that can make a big difference in their ability to get things done from anywhere.
In particular, cloud technology gives business owners and their employees access to e-mail, documents and business tools from wherever they are, helping them stay productive on virtually any device. Cloud-based productivity solutions allow sole proprietors and smaller businesses to be nimble without the traditional cost and complexity of big IT.
The cloud allows employees to better collaborate in real time across multiple locations, providing access to business e-mail and documents from the office or the road. In fact, research has proven that cloud services are an essential ingredient for efficiently growing a modern business.
The Boston Consulting Group recently published the results of a survey that revealed a big shift in the way SMBs work from just three years ago. Workers are no longer confined to desks or offices, and the tools that enable these modern work-on-the-go arrangements have been shown to have a direct impact on SMBs’ bottom line-increasing revenue by as much as 15 percent compared to SMBs that don’t use these technologies.
Newer cloud options allow SMBs to mix and match features based on specific needs and evolve with the business based on factors such as growth or seasonality. They also alleviate the fear of spending funds on soon-to-be-obsolete technology.
Here are a few tips to get started with new technology:

•    Evaluate your business needs – Whether you’re a start-up needing to
connect employees on the road or a growing business seeking a
competitive edge, the right tools can help increase productivity.
•    Move to the cloud – Microsoft recently announced new Office 365 plans for
SMBs, which offer Office apps like Word, Excel and PowerPoint, as well as
e-mail, Web conferencing, and collaboration tools. The easy setup and 24/7
technical support allow owners to pay only for what they use.
•    Find a partner – Working with an IT expert is one of the best ways to ensure
technology delivers the most value. Tools like Pinpoint can help business
owners connect with a partner with the needed skills and expertise.

Salute to an Icon and Legend

0

This is my Man!!by Jesse J. Lewis, Sr
I have written over 5000 articles during my lifetime.  This is one article that I enjoyed every word that I penned.  It is a privilege and pleasure to write any article regarding a true friend – Reverend Dr. Erskine Faush, Sr.  Everything that I mention in this article down through the years is factual including many other contributions that I did not mention because of space availability.
We have had many correspondences during this period of time between the two of us. Faush’s correspondence is such that I usually had to get a dictionary to understand it. Most people that correspond with Rev. Faush will attest to the fact that they also need a dictionary.  He is just that smart.
The taping of My Father Prayed, the prayers of Erskine Faush, Sr., brings together inspiration and music in an one hour production at 5 p.m., Sunday, December 7,  at More Than Conquerors Faith Church, Birmingham, Alabama.
Known as the man with the “sweetest voice this side of heaven,” Reverend Dr. Erskine Faush, Sr. has been delivering the love of God to Birmingham audiences for the last 64 consecutive years. Considered a legend in the business, he combines his preaching talents with his flair for broadcast every Tuesday through Friday during his program Gospel Cavalcade on 900 Gold WATV.
Faush began his radio career in 1950 when he was recruited to work as a part-time announcer. Already serving as a minister, Reverend Faush welcomed the opportunity as another way to share his ministry. Most notably, his program gave hope and inspiration to thousands of African Americans during the Civil Rights Movement. He and his broadcasting partner, Shelley Stewart, have been described as “cornerstones of Black radio.” Their contributions in the movement have been cited by prestigious organizations and leaders including the President of the United States, the National Association of Black Broadcasters and the Smithsonian Institute.
Faush and Stewart went on to partner as radio station owners and operated Birmingham Ebony Broadcasting—“the authentic voice for African Americans in Birmingham”. Post the sale of WATV, Faush continues daily to be a voice to the voiceless and pastor to the sick over the airways with the legendary “sick call”. Long time friend and Founder of the American Gospel Quartet Convention George W. Stewart says of Faush, “He paved the way for all of us in the ministry and media”. Prayers that have touched generations throughout the years follow his opening theme song, “For The Love of God”. Pastor Steve Green of More Than Conquerors said, “The City remembers him as feeding the hungry and housing those in need by rallying the community.”
Reverend Faush continues his love of ministry as Pastor Emeritus of the Metropolitan A. M. E. Zion Church in Birmingham and has served as Presiding Elder of the Birmingham District, North Alabama Conference. He has served as director of ministerial training for the North Alabama Conference, as a delegate to the World Methodist Conference, and as chairman of the Episcopal Committee of the General Conference. He is Chairman of Faush-Metropolitan Manor, a housing development serving the elderly in the Woodlawn community for the past 30 years.
The Alabama Broadcaster Hall of Famer has a Bachelor of Arts Degree-Faith College in Birmingham, Master of Science Degree-Alabama State University with Broadcast Communication Studies-University of Denver, Urban Studies and Community Planning Graduate Studies-Alabama A&M University, Interdenominational Theological Seminary, Master of Divinity Degree-Union Seminary and Doctor of Divinity Degree-Livingstone College in Salisbury, North Carolina. His affiliations have been at the City, State and national levels.
This is the second installment of prayers chronicled according to Reverend Dr. Erskine “Chuck” Faush, Jr. “It is a gift of love for my father because he has touched so many and I believe it’s really special to him that I along with two of his granddaughters contributed to this legacy production that will outlive us all.
The public is invited to the production of My Father Prayed. A limited number of audience passes are available at WATV Radio, 3025 Ensley Avenue, Birmingham, Al 35208. It is considered a reunion of the best gospel voices from around the City who will sing some of the favorite hymns of the church along with the most inspiring prayers of the past five decades.

Hepatitis C Reaches Historic Highs

0

Hepatitis  While alarming, these data points are no surprise given that the vast majority of those infected with the debilitating, costly and life threatening HCV virus – the leading cause of advanced liver disease, cirrhosis, liver cancer and liver transplants – are entirely unaware and asymptomatic. As worrisome, since the virus often goes undetected, individuals often unknowingly transmit the disease to others. Even those who are aware of their HCV positive status face barriers relating to exorbitant drug costs, which can currently reach a prohibitive $1,000 a pill. One recent report even cited a “jaw-dropping” prediction that spending on HCV treatment would surge by more than 100 percent in 2014 and by more than 200 percent in both 2015 and 2016. View additional frightening factoids about HCV bulleted down below.
Because myths abound about how the HCV virus is transmitted, far too many – like those who have never used recreational drugs and/or shared a needle with another person, for example – erroneously believe they are not at risk and never get tested. Many are surprised to learn that the population most at risk is the swelling baby-boomer generation. In fact, individuals born between 1945 and 1965 are a whopping five times more likely to have HCV than any other age group due to both previous blood transfusion screening and lifestyle issues. The overwhelming majority (more than 75%) of Americans who today are living with HCV are baby boomers. This is why the CDC and the United States Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends that everyone born between the years 1945 and 1965 get a one-time screening for HCV – testing that is covered by insurance plans and Medicare in many cases.
But, baby boomers are not the only critically high risk population for HCV. African-Americans also have a substantially higher rate of chronic HCV infection and are twice as likely as Caucasians to be infected. In fact, chronic liver disease, often HCV-related, is the leading cause of death among African-Americans between the ages of 45 and 64.
With all of this in mind, public health advocate Pernessa Seele, founder and CEO of The Balm in Gilead  – a nonprofit organization that spearheads activism initiatives to proactively address life-threatening diseases like the silent but deadly viral HCV epidemic, is available for interviews and editorials on the reasoning’s, resolutions and frightening factoids (as listed below) regarding the rapidly escalating incidence of HCV in America.
For its part, HCV will be a primary topic of discussion at the upcoming Healthy Churches 2020 Conference to be held in North Carolina November 13-15 – an event Seele founded and oversees to directly address how faith-based communities, for their part, can play a more significant front-line role in addressing life-threatening diseases like HCV and others. Through this large-scale industry event, and also grassroots Town Hall Meeting forums that Seele hosts in cities across the United States, she is working tirelessly to educate regional populations on the risks and realities of HCV while concurrently helping faith-based organizations better achieve their community health-related goals.
“Our goal with executing events and forums, and our advocacy work at large, is to raise awareness about Hepatitis C and to mobilize communities all across America to get tested. Screening for Hepatitis C is the critical first step in connecting people with treatment and preventing the disease from spreading throughout our local communities, across the country and around the globe,” notes Seele.
“In addition, with so many Americans across a multitude of racial and age boundaries at high or direct risk for HCV, I also urge citizens to support common sense legislation like the Viral Hepatitis Testing Act (S.2538/H.R. 3723) that would help address this public health crisis by creating the first coordinated national system to address and combat viral hepatitis,” Seele continues. “By expanding hepatitis education, testing and care – with a concerted focus on reaching those most at-risk – this legislation would meet an essential need across the country. Indeed, this sound public policy will help ensure that baby boomers, African-Americans and other at-risk populations have unencumbered access to Hepatitis screening.”
Frightening Factoids about the Hepatitis C Epidemic and High Risk Populations Like Baby Boomers
Unless current trends are reversed, the CDC predicts that deaths due to hepatitis C will double or even triple in the next 20 years. Quick diagnostic testing of baby boomers and other at-risk individuals can help reduce the spread of hepatitis C by connecting infected individuals with education and treatment, while improving general awareness of the disease. The CDC and the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) have both recommended one-time screening of Americans born from 1945 through 1965, and this testing is covered by insurance plans and Medicare.

•    The majority of patients are asymptomatic
•    Some patients may not have any symptoms for up to 20 years, and yet have liver disease progression
•    Symptoms of HCV may include:
•    Fatigue
•    Nausea
•    Poor appetite/weight loss
•    Muscle and joint pains/weakness
•    Jaundice
•    Abdominal pain or swelling
•    Dark urine
•    Itching
•    Fluid retention

Progression of Hepatitis C
•    For every 100 people infected with Hepatitis C
•    75-85 will develop chronic infection
•     60-70 will develop chronic liver disease
•     5-20 will develop cirrhosis
•     1-5 will die of cirrhosis or liver cancer
•    Approximately 12,000 people die in the U.S. every year from HCV related disease

How it’s spread:
•    Through BLOOD!
•    Blood transfusions and organ transplants before the routine screening of the blood supply in 1992
•    Blood contamination in medical settings
•    Occupational blood exposure (needle sticks)
•    Birth to an infected mother
•    Sex with an infected partner
•    Injection drug use / sharing needles
•    Unsanitary tattoo application

Persons with chronic HCV are at risk for cirrhosis, liver failure, liver cancer and/or death
HCV Screening: Persons Most Likely to be Infected with HCV
▪    Adults born between 1945 and 1965 – “Baby Boomers”
▪    Selected medical conditions
•    Recipients of clotting factors (prior 1987)
•    Chronic hemodialysis
•    Persistently abnormal ALT
▪    Recipients of transfusions or organ transplants
▪    Persons with recognized exposures (needle-sticks, mucosal exposures)
▪    Past or current injection drug use / sharing needles
▪    HIV-infected persons
▪    Birth to an infected mother

Baby Boomer Facts:
•    Hepatitis C (HCV), which is already a greater epidemic in this country than HIV/AIDS.
•    1 out of 5 people with Hepatitis C don’t know they have it!
•    More than 2 million U.S. baby boomers are infected with hepatitis C – accounting for more than 75 percent of all American adults living with the virus. Hepatitis C is a liver disease that results from infection with the Hepatitis C virus.
•    While anyone can get Hepatitis C, more than 75% of adults with Hepatitis C are baby boomers – born from 1945 through 1965.
•    Within the African American community, chronic liver disease, often Hepatitis C-related, is a leading cause of death among persons aged 45-64 years.
•    The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has strongly encouraged that EVERY baby boomer in the country be tested, at least, once for HCV.
•    Hepatitis C causes serious liver diseases, including liver cancer (the fastest-rising cause of cancer-related deaths) and is the leading cause of liver transplants in the United States.
•    The GOOD NEWS is that with early screening and treatment, the virus that causes Hepatitis C can be eliminated from the body and liver damage – even liver cancer – can be prevented.

Baby Boomers:
•    Account for 76.5% of Hepatitis C Cases in the US
•    Disease acquired in the 1980s and 1990s
•    Individuals now presenting with liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular cancer
•    2X commoner in men than women
•    2X commoner amongst black men than Caucasian men
•    All individuals in this birth cohort regardless of other risk factors should get a hepatitis C test

Conclusion
•    There are many people infected with hepatitis C who do not know it
•    If undetected and untreated, hepatitis C can cause severe illness and premature death
•    There are simple, effective treatment with very few side effects available and more coming soon
•    Get tested today!

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. Calls For Federal Intervention In The Case Of Michael Brown Grand Jury Verdict

Phih Beta SigmaInternational President Jonathan A. Mason, Sr. To Preach At The Historic
Pleasant Grove Baptist Church on Sunday, November 30, 2014 at 10:45 am CST in St. Louis, Missouri

He Will Also Announce The Fraternity’s Plan For Healing And Rebuilding In
Ferguson And The St. Louis Metropolitan Area
WASHINGTON,  — In the aftermath of the grand jury decision not to indict Officer Darren Wilson for the killing of unarmed teenager Michael Brown, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. calls on the U.S. Department of Justice to continue to investigate, but to do it thoroughly with vigor and bring federal charges in this case. The failure of the justice system to produce an indictment and move on to a fair and impartial trial is troubling in the face of the publicly available evidence.
The International President of Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc., Jonathan A. Mason, Sr., had the following to say, “With all of the recent cases across the country of police officers killing unarmed African American males, the time for federal oversight is overdue. The unjust criminalization of young men of color by law enforcement is both tragic and devastating. The repeated lack of justice is unacceptable, and Phi Beta Sigma stands with other organizations and individuals across America who are calling for accountability.”
In addition, Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is committed to assisting the Brown family, the Ferguson community and the St. Louis metropolitan area in their quest for healing. Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity, Inc. is calling on those members of the public, who are destroying businesses and properties in Ferguson, to stop this unproductive activity. The organization will join the restoration and rebuilding efforts immediately.

Judson College’s Department of Nursing holds Vital Signs Clinic

0

Judson College Vital Signs ClinicMARION, Ala. – The Nursing Department at Judson College sponsored a Vital Signs Clinic on campus for two days in early November. The clinic was supervised by Vera Davis, Assistant Professor of Nursing and Susanne Barry, Adjunct Nursing Instructor. Approximately 25 nursing students took part in the clinic.
The clinic provided Judson’s nursing students the opportunity to measure blood pressure, pulse and respirations of volunteer participants, including students, faculty and staff of Judson College. Vital signs for approximately 120 people were checked. Educational materials regarding cardiovascular disease were provided.
This was the first Vital Signs Clinic offered by the Nursing department at Judson College. However, the Nursing Department hopes to offer the clinic each semester to the Judson campus family, as well as the Marion community.
The idea for the Vital Signs Clinic was born out of a brainstorming session among nursing faculty. All faculty were involved in the planning and implementation of the project. Mrs. Christine White, Clinical Coordinator, was instrumental in communicating with and scheduling students.
“The Nursing Department is blessed with a nursing faculty who desire to prepare nursing students to care for diverse and vulnerable populations, especially among those in our immediate communities,” said Dr. Wanda Hayes, Assistant Professor of Nursing and Director of Associate Degree in Nursing Program.
“We are excited to offer this clinic at Judson. We believe the clinic is beneficial in raising awareness of cardiovascular disease. In the future, we hope to offer additional opportunities regarding other health issues,” Hayes said.
