Holiday Toy Safety

0

toyrelatedinjuriesreport_sized  There’s nothing quite like the face of a child unwrapping their gifts on Christmas morning. Whether it’s a new bike or a favorite doll, toys are on every child’s wish list. As parents, we have just as much fun shopping for the perfect gift! But before you run to the toy store, you’ll want to be sure the toys you buy are safe for your child. Every year thousands of children are treated in hospital emergency rooms for toy related injuries.
In order to keep kids safe, you should always ask yourself:
1 – Is this toy safe?
Choking is a particular risk for children three and younger, because they tend to put objects in their mouths. Dr. Terri Coco is an emergency room physician at Children’s of Alabama and an injury prevention expert. She says a good rule of thumb when shopping for younger children, is to see if any pieces of the toy can fit into the tube of a roll of toilet paper. If so, then that toy is a choking hazard. She also points out that even small pieces that are attached to the toy can break off and become a choking hazard for a small child.
Avoid toys with:
•    Small parts
•    Sharp edges
•    Gears
•    Exposed wires
•    Hinges
•    Long strings
•    Magnets
•    Small batteries
2 – Is this toy developmentally appropriate for my child?
Dr. Coco also suggests parents only purchase age appropriate toys for their children. For instance, a bottle of bubbles or a paint set may be fun for an older child to play with, but each could be dangerous if consumed by a younger child. Be sure to read the labels on game and toys and adhere to the age recommendations listed.
3 – Is this toy age appropriate for my child?
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) closely monitors and regulates toys. Any toys made in, or imported into the United States after 1995 must comply with CPSC standards. Remember parental supervision is always key around small children. Be careful that younger siblings don’t have access to toys belonging to their big brother or big sister.
Tips for parents with infants, toddlers and preschoolers:
•    Make sure toys are large enough that they can’t be swallowed (use the toilet paper roll test to be sure).
•    Toys should have soft, smooth edges and no sharp points. Toys should be safe enough to withstand chewing.
•    No strings
•    Avoid toys with batteries
By keeping these tips in mind, you can ensure the toys found under your tree will be safe and bring years of enjoyment to your child. For the latest information on toy recalls, check the CPSC website at www.cpsc.gov.

Model Christmas Parade in Alabama

0

piedmont-alabamaBill Donohue applauds city officials in Piedmont, Alabama:

The theme of this year’s annual Christmas parade in Piedmont, Alabama is “Let’s Keep Christ in Christmas.” Kudos to Mayor Bill Baker and the seven members of the city council for their wisdom and fortitude. Of course, the anti-Christian crowd isn’t happy, as witnessed by the reaction of the Freedom from Religion Foundation (FFRF).

The parade, which will be held Thursday evening, is being protested by FFRF on the grounds that it “alienates non-Christians and others in Piedmont.” It did not name a single person in Piedmont who objected, but even if such a person exists, feeling alienated is not a constitutional basis for violating free speech.

“The sentiment of ‘Keeping Christ in Christmas,'” says the attorney for FFRF, “does not qualify” as a secular celebration. But Christmas is a national holiday, and therefore enjoys a secular status, even if its cultural roots are religious.

Here’s a reality check for FFRF: Religion is the most defining element in any culture, and some of its traditions ineluctably become secularized over time. In this case, the refrain “Let’s Keep Christ in Christmas” is simply a call to honor the meaning of this holiday: No Christ, no Christmas. That, of course, is exactly what bothers FFRF—Jesus Christ!

The Catholic League salutes Mayor Baker and the City Council for making this important cultural statement. We urge all municipalities across the United States to follow suit and adopt the Piedmont model of celebrating Christmas.

To congratulate Mayor Baker, contact: Bill.Baker@piedmontcity.org

Farewell to a Great Soldier!

Electra AdamsThere are many great sons of God in the church world today.  Many great warriors standing on the front line declaring truth and challenging the Body to grow and mature that we be no longer babes, tossed to and fro in a world of darkness. Some years ago I had the great pleasure to hear Dr. Myles Munroe on TBN. What he shared that season was so transforming until today we are yet striving for the goal of knowing self. While preparing to minister to a crowd in Europe, he tells of how God led him to visit a graveyard. Strange place for a lesson? Well, having arrived, his question was, as most of ours would have been, “Why did You lead me here?” Dr. Munroe said while he observed the ancient to modern graves the Lord began to speak these words to him, “There are many here who have lived and died, yet never lived at all. They never became who I sent them to the earth to become.”
Dr. Munroe’s word for the Body spoke to the Kingdom of God on earth and the realm and level of dominion that the sons of God were sent here to declare for His glory. He challenged the Body to be very uncomfortable living ordinary lives in the kingdom; to strive for a fellowship with Him that would provoke others with a Holy provocation. But the essence of this all was that nobody can do the extraordinary until he or she knows the God self. Who are you and why did God send you here? What on earth are you here to manifest? On this note, we celebrate his life: one well emptied in earth. Let all who finds himself strive to empty himself of all the Father sent him filled with! Thus, we honor God Himself!
Until next week, let the kingdom of God RISE!  Love one another!

WHAT WILL YOU DO WITH JESUS?

You should be thinking, what a question? Well, it is the most important question anyone can ask you. May I explain my reason for asking you that question? Thank you for allowing me to explain my question. After this life on earth, where will you spend eternity?  You see, you make your choice now as to where you want to spend eternity and with whom. There are only two ways to live your life now, and that is for Jesus or for Satan. The choice is yours. It all depends on your choice that will determine your eternal destination. You see, God placed you in your mother’s womb for a reason. Please read Psalm 139:13-17. AMEN.
The Lord loves you, and He wants you to choose Him, because without Him, you will be in the presence of your enemy, and all he has to offer you is unquenchable burning flames of fire [Mark 9:43-44]. There are many references to hell’s fire. A wise person chooses Jesus while life is in the body, because it is impossible to make a choice when there is no more conscious decisions to be made. Why not make Jesus your choice today; He is waiting and longing for you to choose Him. He has a beautiful place for you and all who choose Him. I chose Him long ago. Please read Revelation Chapters 21 and 22. Amen!

Southern Baptist Convention’s First African-American President to be Guest Speaker at Greater Shiloh

Rev. Fred Luter, Jr.

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Rev. Fred Luter Jr., who was elected the Southern Baptist Convention’s first African-American president, will serve as the First Wednesday speaker on Dec. 3 for Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church, 2135 Jefferson Ave. S.W.
The Rev. Michael W. Wesley Sr., Pastor of Greater Shiloh, said the church is honored to have Luter, who was chosen in 2012 to lead the country’s largest Protestant denomination. The public is invited to attend the 6:30 p.m. service.
“To have the opportunity to bring him to our church is just incredible for us,” Wesley said. “It is our delight to have him grace us with his presence.”
Luter was unopposed for the SBC presidency. Luter is the Pastor of Franklin Avenue Baptist Church in New Orleans and was the first African American to preach the convention sermon at the annual meeting in 2001, also held in New Orleans, and in 2011 was the first Black elected as SBC first vice president.
Wesley said the church’s First Wednesday Service is designed to be a growth engine to allow people to visit Greater Shiloh’s campus who would not normally get the chance to visit.  He said he has sought to expand the reach of the service by inviting both Black and white church congregations to worship and fellowship at the church.
“Now, we are seeking to enlarge that circle even wider to include some of America’s premier preachers to bless, not only our church, but the Birmingham community,” Wesley said.

Greater Shiloh Missionary Baptist Church has been a cornerstone in the Birmingham community since May 3, 1891. The church has grown dramatically within the last 10 years to more than 2,000 members under the leadership of Dr. Michael W. Wesley Sr. who has been the Pastor for 29 years. Greater Shiloh’s mission is to reach, teach, and baptize throughout the world, beginning in its community, fulfilling the Great Commission by the power and presence of the Holy Spirit, until Jesus returns. Pastor Charles Jenkins Earns a Soul Train Award Nomination

Rev. Fred Luter, Jr.

Pastor Charles JenkinsCHICAGO, Ill.  – Grammy® Award-winning songwriter and Inspired People recording artist Pastor Charles Jenkins may soon add a new accolade to his crowded trophy cabinet. Best known for his uplifting anthem “Awesome” (#1 for 22 weeks on Billboard’s Hot Gospel Songs chart in 2012), Jenkins demonstrated his musical eclecticism earlier this year by releasing the pulsating track “Real Love.” The infectious groove has now earned Pastor Jenkins and his backing group, Inspired People, a Soul Train Award nomination in the category of Best Gospel/Inspirational Performance. The show taped at the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas on November 7th and airs on BET and Centric on November 30 at 8P/7C.
“It’s a huge and unexpected honor,” says Jenkins who is pastor of Fellowship Chicago, a booming urban church in the Windy City. “Like so many others, I grew up not just watching but dancing to Soul Train every weekend. I pretended that I was on the dance floor live from my house. This is an overwhelming feeling, not only for me; but for my family and friends too. I really enjoyed attending the show and it was an amazing event.”
The riveting rhythm is a joyous mash-up of Euro dance and club beats with a polished urban coating and a simple message of agape love that makes the song appealing to a broad audience. The festive concept video boasts vignettes of “Real Love” and has earned over a half million views on Inspired People’s You Tube channel.
“Real Love is a song that responds to so many living pictures of hatred and pain in the world,” Jenkins adds. “In a time of so much violence and conflict I asked people how did they define love. After receiving several different definitions, mainly pointing to something external or conditional, I was prompted to study the word Love, write the song, create a video and share it around the world. My hope was to paint a clear picture of the meaning of Love in its rawest meaning and inspire all of us to a higher level of active, functional unconditional Real Love everyday and everywhere.”
Pastor Jenkins launched the Inspired People recording label to create music to inspire listeners to encourage and improve themselves in this adventure called Life. The firm’s mantra is that “Inspired People, Inspire People!” For more on “Inspired People”, log on to www.inspiredpeople.music.net.

Revelation of Adoration

by Rev. Reid

A pastor recommended to the church hot air hand dryers in the rest rooms and after two weeks took them out. Asked by one of the members why, he confessed they worked fine but when he went in he saw a sign that read, “For a sample of this week’s sermon, push the button.”
I hope these columns are not considered hot air. Because like Heaven it does not take much to live in God. Heaven is like a mustard seed of faith, when spiritually planted in our hearts, though it is the smallest of all seeds it grows into the largest garden of hope and unconditional love. Though love is the greatest of these, faith is the key that unlocks all spiritual doors leading to eternal life. That faith is based on our acknowledgement that God is our all and all! God is everything!
The problem is many of us claim to believe ,yet we fall short in having even the smallest amount of faith in God unless all else in this world has failed. This small seed of faith yields a tree of eternal life that is our shelter now and in the world to come.

ICE McDonald, De-Mystifies Magic for the Christian Community

10148

LOS ANGELES, Calif.  – International Master Magician Kenrick “ICE” McDonald, the newly elected National President of the Society of American Magicians (S.A.M.) and currently the most celebrated African American magician in the United States has been asked the same question numerous times over the years.  How can you be a Christian and a Magician?  His answer isn’t as complicated as many may think. Ice reminds them that God sheds light in all the so-called “dark places.” Endorsed by Bishop Ullmer of Faithful Central Bible Church in Los Angeles (his home church) and many other churches, Ice is no doubt a “Christian Magician.”
Ice McDonald made history four months ago on July 3, 2014 when he was inaugurated the first African American National President of the Society of American Magicians (S.A.M.), the oldest and most prestigious magic organization in the world in which famed magician Harry Houdini served as president from 1917 until his death in 1926.  One of the first major things he did after his inauguration was visit the gravesite of the famous escape artist, Harry Houdini on October 3rd, in Queens, New York and set in motion its restoration. As the National President of S.A.M., Ice travels extensively around the country, supporting fellow magicians and participating in countless magic events.
Despite having no formal training, Ice is considered a magician’s magician who for over 30 years has mesmerized international audiences with his grand illusions. He has sold out performances at The Magic Castle in Hollywood, broken audience and box office records at Monday Night Magic in New York and has been featured on NPR, News One Now with Roland Martin, ARISE TV, The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, Masters of Illusion (series on PAX TV), the documentary The Art and Soul of Magic – The Story of America’s Black Magician and ABC, CBS, NBC, Fox, UPN and BBC.  His sheer mastery of illusion has astonished audiences in London, Wales, India, Singapore, Jamaica, Bahamas, and throughout the United Kingdom. He has been featured in and graced the cover of numerous newspapers and magazines throughout the world including the Los Angeles Times, the New York Times, Genii magazine and several international publications.
“I grew up in a very religious family in San Diego, California. My father, a Baptist minister, bought me my first magic kit. It was a used magic kit with missing pieces. As a creative child my imagination allowed me to determine what was missing from the kit and the correct way to present the trick. For many years, because of my family’s strong Christian belief and skepticism about mixing Christianity and magic, I would sometimes have to practice secretly in my room. I was determined to show my family that magic is a visual art and there is nothing dark or evil about it. I personally knew this was not a dark art but a terribly misunderstood art form.”
In his early days of magic Ice asked himself, what is it that causes Christians to fear or shy away from magic and magicians. Pulling rabbits out of hats, making doves appear, guessing cards or sawing a subject in half didn’t appear sinful or mystic. It was and remains the amazement and childlike awe that he brought out in people witnessing his talent and the thrill of taking people back to their childhood that made him know that he had found his passion and his calling.
As a devoted Christian, Ice wants to prove to his Christian brothers and sisters that his occupation is just as important and fruitful as theirs. He has always known that this is God’s plan and purpose for him. He has pursued this magical journey by faith not by sight and looking back Ice can see how God has shaped his magic career to put him in the prestigious position that he now holds. God has shaped circumstances that present new challenges and opportunities.
Ice wants audiences to see how God has positioned him in a place where he can share the talent that God has given him with others. The high profile position of being National President of S.A.M. allows him to reach hundreds of thousands of people and to spread God’s plan.
“I believe that our God is great, and He has light in all the dark places. I consider myself that light to those who feel that magic or being a magician is dark,” Ice states. He wants to change the perception of magicians within the Christian Community and intends to do so by standing on God’s promises and remaining faithful to the talent that God has given him. He states that his heart has been with God since the day he was born and nothing will ever change that.
