MONTGOMERY – The Alabama State men’s and women’s golf teams began practice during the past week as the Hornets prepare to open the fall season by hosting the ASU Fall Golf Classic this weekend at the RTJ Golf Course in Prattville.
The men are three-time defending SWAC champions, while the women’s program has won the last two SWAC titles and three in the past four years.
“I like our teams,” head coach Dr. Gary Grandison said. “I really like where they are attitude-wise, because success is an attitude. I like the way we’re starting the fall, preparing well. Hopefully we can continue to represent Alabama State the way we have in previous years.”
The Hornets will face another challenging schedule in the fall. Among the highlights, the men are slated to play in a tournament at St. Johns at the famed Bethpage Course in September, while the women are slated to play in Hawaii in October.
“It’s all about attitude,” Dr. Grandison said. “If our players continue to take care of their bodies, their minds, and themselves in the process of preparing to win tournaments, we’ll be fine. They will get a PGA Tour-type experience this year, just like last year. As long as they continue to take care of the things we ask them to, it should be another exciting year for Alabama State golf.”

 TUSCALOOSA, Ala. – Stillman College President Dr. Peter Edmund Millet has appointed Cassandra “CC” Moorer as the College’s interim director of athletics effective Aug. 26. Moorer replaces Paul Bryant who accepted the position of Director of Athletics at South Carolina State University in Orangeburg, S.C. Bryant’s last day was Aug. 22.
“Coach Moorer has served the College as our Head Women’s Basketball Coach and has shown great leadership, commitment and dedication. Her tenure as Interim Director will mark the Stillman history books as the first female athletic director of the College. She is poised to continue taking our athletics program to new heights,” said Millet.
Moorer is in her fifth year with the Lady Tigers basketball team and has brought an extensive background to her coaching and leadership style. Prior to her arrival at Stillman, she was an assistant coach at the University of Alabama (1997-2005) and the University of Houston (1985-1986). In 1996, she was drafted by the Women’s National Basketball Association’s New York Liberty and played professionally in Europe from 1986-1994. She is a 1985 graduate of the University of Alabama where she was a member of the Crimson Tide’s Lady Basketball team. During her time at the capstone, “CC” became the first All-American in UA history and was honored as an SEC great in 2009. In addition, she coached four years at American Christian Academy (ACA) winning four area championships.
“I am honored to serve the Stillman community as Interim Athletic Director. Our coaches, staff and student-athletes are superior and I look forward to collaborative efforts as we move forward. My commitment during this transition will be a wholeheartedly rewarding and gratifying experience for all facets of our athletic program,” said Moorer.
As the Interim Director, Moorer will be responsible for the management of Stillman’s 12 intercollegiate athletic programs including the supervision of sports programs, fundraising, personnel management, strategic planning, fiscal allocation and complying with all College, State, Division II level Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) and National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) policies. In addition, she will provide leadership in supporting the academic success of all student-athletes, diversity, gender equity and student-athlete welfare. The Stillman Athletics department consists of 200+ student-athletes participating in 12 intercollegiate athletic programs (6 women and 6 men) including Football, Basketball, Baseball, Volleyball, Cross Country, Track & Field and Tennis.

MONTGOMERY – The Alabama State University football home opener will be televised live nationally on the ASPiRE Television Network.

The Hornets’ Inaugural Classic game against Tennessee State on Sept. 6 will be shown on ASPiRE at 4 p.m. CT / 5 ET from New ASU Stadium.

 MONTGOMERY – A new era in Alabama State University athletics begins this weekend as Hornet football and basketball game broadcasts will be heard exclusively at bamastatesports.com.
All games can be heard online through the official athletics website or through the free mobile app for droid or IPhone devices. The app can be found by searching Alabama State sports.
For the first time ever, all ASU athletics-produced broadcasts are under the umbrella of the new Hornet Sports Productions, which will be managed by the Alabama State Athletics department.
“As we evaluated our broadcasts over the past few years, our online audience far surpassed our over-the-air audience,” Interim Athletic Director Melvin Hines said. “HSP gives us the ability to expand and enhance elements within the broadcast of all sports as well as create another revenue stream for athletics and the University.”
Saturday’s football season-opener at Sam Houston State will be broadcast via internet radio on bamastatesports,com/showcase.
The football and basketball audio broadcasts further the expansion of game broadcasts of Alabama State athletics on bamastatesports.com.
Since the beginning of the 2011 season, all Alabama State home football and women’s and men’s home conference basketball games that were not televised were video streamed online on the athletics website. In addition to those sports, select ASU volleyball, soccer, softball and baseball games have been video or audio streamed online.
During that time, approximately 170 contests have been video and/or audio streamed on HorneTVision, the online home of bamastatesports.com, in partnership between the Athletics Department, the University’s media center, the communications department, WVAS 90.7 FM, and University Administration. The combination of experienced professionals and talented, aspiring students work to produce and direct live athletics events, all while giving students real world, on-the-job training and preparation for exciting communications careers.
