BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School held its 2nd Annual Rey of Hope Dinner & Auction at The Club on Thursday, May 1. This year’s gala, sponsored by Regions Financial Corporation, welcomed approximately 290 guests with jazz music provided by Bourbon Sidecar. The evening featured a silent auction, live auction and the guests were flashed mobbed by 32 of Cristo Rey’s students dancing to Michael Jackson’s “Black or White”. Proceeds from the event went to support the Cristo Rey High School’s primary goal – to provide a quality, college-preparatory education to low-income students with limited educational opportunities in a Christian environment.
A little boy was watching for his mother to come out of a department store. As he waited, he was approached by a man who asked, “Son, can you tell me where the post office is?” The little boy replied, “Sure, just go straight down the street a couple of blocks and turn to your right.” The man thanked the boy kindly and said, “I’m a pastor in this town, and I’d like for you to come to church on Sunday. I’ll show you how to get to Heaven.” The little boy replied with a chuckle, “Awww, come on Rev., you don’t even know the way to the post office, how are you going to give me directions to Heaven?”
Telling someone how to get to Heaven is really taking on the unknown. As far as Heaven is concerned, we can only watch for it as we do with most things concerning God. Jesus explained in one of His parables what it means to “Watch” for the coming of God. He told the story of a wise and faithful servant and a wicked servant. The wise servant took care of the house when the master left and the wicked servant did not and beat his fellow servants. He raised the question, “Who then is the faithful and wise servant, whom the master has put in charge of the servants?” God, the Master of our being in Christ Jesus has put us in charge of our life, as servants to work for Him. We are responsible for those in our care, those we say we love and those we don’t love so much. Our job in God’s household of faith is to give spiritual food at the proper time to those in need, including ourselves. Jesus tells us what a good servant will be doing when the master returns. He says a good servant will be feeding and caring for Himself and others when the Master returns and his reward will be to be put in charge of everything the master owns. Jesus says, “But suppose that servant is wicked? Suppose we don’t know the Lord. Suppose we are doing things that we know we should not be doing, living as a hypocrite. Suppose we are practicing hate instead of love, violence instead of peace, living in darkness instead of light? Jesus says this wicked servant will be cut to pieces and assigned a place with hypocrites.
But there are ways to avoid this fate.
First, by watching who God is in us and who we are in God. God is mysterious! God is the Unknown. He is ever present with us and hidden within us as the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. It is the inscrutability of God that keeps us from watching. But through giving our life to Him in daily prayer and meditation we become aware of who God is in us and who we are in God. Watching is the secret way of getting to know the unknown. This surreptitious is worth watching for. This obscure blessing saves us from sin and guarantees eternal life, victory over death and is life’s greatest mystery.
Second, we watch for the mysterious by recognizing when God’s presence has entered us and following His guidance. How do we recognize God in Christ Jesus? By faith! Faith is the thing hoped for, yet unseen. It is Mysterious! Hidden! The Bible says, “Therefore keep watch, because you do not know on what day your lord will come.” Another version of the Bible says, watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your lord doth come. And the watchfulness has to be for twenty-four hours: We cannot afford to be watchful just for a few minutes once a day – in the morning when we pray or when we meditate and then forget God. That won’t help because nobody knows when God will knock at our door. And if we are not watchful we will miss; we will not recognize him. Only in immense awareness, prayer and meditation can God be recognized and known.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Jefferson County Circuit Court Judge Helen Shores Lee challenged the 38 graduates of Holy Family Cristo Rey Catholic High School to pursue their dreams and remember the sacrifices of others in the past in an inspiring keynote address Saturday.
Judge Lee’s speech referenced sacrifices by Birmingham Foot Soldiers in the 1960s and her late father, legendary civil rights attorney Arthur Shores, who defended Black civil rights protesters in the 1960s and took part in the historic 1954 Brown vs. Topeka Board of Education case that outlawed segregated schools.
“Don’t let anybody deter you from pursuing your dreams,” Lee said. “Find a cause to get behind. Do not ever forget your heritage. Embracing the future means very little if you don’t know about your past.”
Lee commended the academic success at Holy Family Cristo Rey in Ensley, where two of her grandsons attend. The graduation took place at Cathedral of Saint Paul, 2120 3rd Avenue North in downtown Birmingham.
Four Holy Family Cristo Rey seniors received more than $241,000 in scholarship offers, led by Brianna Todd with $498,460 in offers from multiple colleges and Valedictorian Khayla Jones $424,584 in college scholarship offers.
In third and fourth place, respectively, were Co-Salutatorians Elijah Brown with $374,944 in college scholarship offers, and Carlton Hicks with $241,079 in college scholarship offers.
The 38 seniors received a combined school record $3.16 million in scholarship offers, and 100 percent of the graduates have been accepted into 57 colleges across the country, according to school college counselor Pamela Cowan. The scholarship total does not include honors and awards from private organizations, nonprofits and businesses.
Located at 2001 19th St. Ensley, Holy Family Cristo Rey’s unique work-study program allows students aged 14 and up to offset much of their tuition by working in more than 90 businesses across metro Birmingham one day a week. Since the school became affiliated with the Chicago-based Cristo Rey Network in 2007, 100 percent of its seniors have graduated and been accepted into college.
Holy Family Cristo Rey is currently accepting applications for the 2014-15 school year. For details, call Beverly Dixon, Director of Admissions, at (205) 263-0133, email bdixon@hfcristorey.org, or go to www.hfcristorey.org. Follow the school on Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn and YouTube.
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – UAB Medicine Urgent Care, a convenient clinic backed by the full resources of UAB Medicine, opens at 7 a.m. Thursday, May 22, to treat adults for non-life-threatening illnesses and injuries in its location at 125 20th St. South, Suite 103.
“This is ideal for the downtown community, UAB employees, UAB patients who do not have a primary-care physician, and established primary-care patients who either are unable to see their physician or need to be seen after hours,” said Stuart Cohen, M.D., associate professor of Internal Medicine.
UAB Medicine Urgent Care will be open seven days a week to treat patients ages 18 and older. Operating hours are 7 a.m.-7 p.m. Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.-3 p.m. Saturday, and 1-5 p.m. Sunday. One medical doctor and one nurse practitioner will be on-site during hours of operation.
“It is a walk-in clinic, so no appointment is necessary,” said Andrew Allen, M.D., UAB School of Medicine graduate and lead physician for the facility, who expects an average of 65 to 70 patients will be seen daily. “We won’t be equipped to handle codes or unstable conditions. Those cases will still need to go to the ER. Everything else should be fair game.”
UAB Medicine Urgent Care will treat patients for all non-emergent medical conditions, such as upper respiratory tract and urinary tract infections, sinusitis, headache, cuts/abrasions, mild orthopedic injuries, hypertensive urgency, and mild exacerbations of chronic conditions including asthma, COPD or congestive heart failure.
The 2,756-square-foot clinic features seven exam rooms, a digital X-ray machine and a moderate complexity lab, and it will employ the UAB electronic health record, which will enable seamless follow-up and communication with other UAB providers.
Clinic physicians will not refill or change narcotic or other controlled substance prescriptions. Patients must have those requests handled by their primary-care physician.
Free parking is available in the deck attached to the clinic building; enter from First Avenue South. Most insurance plans are accepted, and patients are asked to bring their insurance card to their visit.
Housed on the ground floor of a successful apartment development in convenient proximity to the UAB campus and medical complex, as well as the central business district, high visibility and ease of access are benefits to the location.
“This is a high-growth area of downtown and a great urgent care option for downtown employees who need access to this care around their work schedules,” said Thalia Baker, executive director of primary care and development.

HAPPY BIRTHDAY LE BOISE DERU and TAMIA BRYANT-DERU!!!
It’s SUMMERTIME…for real!
…What are you doing this weekend?
(Don’t forget… FATHER’S DAY is right around the corner.)
BUT, first…let’s take a look back at Springtime…
Here are some things that have been happening during the last few weeks…I will see you during the next month….
AROUND TOWN…
CELEBRATING…
…People have birthdays everyday…TAMIA and her father LEBOISE DE RU both were seen celebrating …several times…this month. (Smile) I think that they have learned a little from me (the grandmother and mother)… celebrate ‘all month long. I know that I owe it to myself, so I celebrate every day during June, which happens to be my month. You will see and hear more from me this month. Actually it has already started. OH…Tamia graduated and is heading to Tuskegee University in the Fall. Her dad…a proud father!
Also, Celebrating… STEPHONIA MC LINN! She had a party at the New Tide and Tiger on Graymont (across from the Legion Field front entrance). There was fun had be all! Happy Birthday, again, Stephonia! POLITICKING…
Earl HIlliard . Jr.
…At WINELOFT (downtown) were Janine Hunt-Hilliard, Earl Hilliard, Jr., Steve Shaw, John Saxon and Earl Hilliard, Sr. on the ‘Campaign to Elect Earl Hilliard, Jr.’ trail. There were quite a few people out that night supporting Hilliard and enjoying the Wine Loft, one of Birmingham’s Top Hot Spots. I love going there and the food is good. (I will see you there during ‘MY’ Birthday Month.
Rod Scott
…At Ramsay High School and many other places was State Representative Rod Scott. Besides politicking for re-election, Rod Scott received the OUTSTANDING PARTNERSHIP AND COMMUNITY SERVICES AWARD from the Birmingham Council of PTAs. I guess this means that city parents ‘and’ teachers appreciate him enough to give him that award… showing he deserves it. They say it is for someone that goes above and beyond in support of the Birmingham Council of PTAs. I will say CONGRATULATIONS ROD SCOTT!! (I think that Rep. Scott supports the effort of Ramsay principal, Dr. Nettles to be transferred back to Ramsay as well as the building of a new Bush K-8 in Ensley. I heard that he wanted to have a larger setting for the meeting that discussed the personnel moves. I, also, heard that Ramsay, a magnet IB school was tagged by U. S. News & World Report as Alabama’s 11th best high school, a spot above Vestavia Hills High School.) ENJOYING SPORTS…
…At TALLADEGA SUPERSPEEDWAY, Mahari McTier, Jestina Howard, L’Tryce Slade were hanging out with me at Talladega Superspeedway during the Aaron’s Dream Weekend. Jestina has been many times but Mahari and L’Tryce were there for the first time and had a ball. They want to get back again. (We will have to talk about it.)
…At Barber’s Motorsports were fans from all over the county that love cars of all kinds. AND, there was the REGIONS TRADITION for those that love golf. I do…but more than that….MUCH MORE…my boss, Dr. Jesse J. Lewis, Sr. Dr. Lewis’ middle name is GOLF. IF you know him then you know exactly of what I am speaking.
JUST HANGING OUT…
Stephonia McLinn had a birthday party at the NEW Tide and Tiger on Graymont Avenue. She celebrated her birthday on Mother’s Day weekend with friends and family AND she is still celebrating. If you just want to ‘hang out’ and watch the votes come in next Tuesday (June 3), the New Tide and Tiger is the place to be. Everyone that is voting at the Legion Field Stadium should get out and watch the votes at the neighborhood Lounge – Tide and Tiger…for grown folks.
COMING SOON…Other than my birthday month….(AND, I will be ‘hanging out’ and celebrating, too)…
LAUGHTER AT THE STARDOME COMEDY CLUB…This weekend… JEN KOBER…Originally from Lake Charles, Louisiana, Kober has recently relocated to Los Angeles where she has quickly become a nationally known headliner- playing colleges, casinos and comedy clubs all over the country and bringing crowds to their feet with her original blend of stand-up, storytelling and improvised rock-n-roll comedy. Special chronicles family life of actor Flex Alexander and ’90s Pop singer Shanice
LOS ANGELES – OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network primetime special “Flex & Shanice,” premieres on Saturday, May 31 at 10 p.m. ET/PT. The one-hour special will give viewers an exclusive look into the lives of married couple, actor Flex Alexander and ’90s pop singer Shanice, and their outrageous family members living under one roof.
Most people know ’90s pop sensation Shanice for her Grammy-nominated hit song, “I Love Your Smile” and actor Flex Alexander from his hit TV show, “One to One,” but few people know this fairytale couple both faced career stumbling blocks and quickly hit financial rock bottom. Flex and Shanice realized that they needed to take their wedding vow “for richer or poorer” to heart, so with their two adorable kids, 12-year-old Imani and 10-year-old Elijah, in tow, they moved into a rental home and brought their hilarious extended family into the mix to help cover the cost. A total of nine people, including Shanice’s “momager” Crystal, make this truly a full house where anyone’s business becomes everyone’s business.
Financially things are starting to look up for Flex and Shanice. Flex has booked some gigs and confides with fellow comedian, actress and OWN star Kym Whitley on career next steps. Shanice is getting back in the recording studio, but when new gossip surfaces that her mom might have been the reason for her career troubles, Shanice turns to her former producer Babyface for advice and is forced to take a hard look at their relationship.
Meanwhile Flex is faced with a major parental crisis as his daughter transitions to womanhood.
“Flex & Shanice” is executive produced by Jeff Dyson and Vernon Lynch for Lynch-Dyson Entertainment. The special is also executive produced by Julie Pizzi and Patty Ivins.
NEW YORK – HISTORY’s series AMERICAN RESTORATION moves to Monday nights beginning June 2 at 10 p.m. All-new back-to-back half-hour episodes will premiere every Monday night for six consecutive weeks.
Rick Dale of Rick’s Restorations in Las Vegas is busier than ever bringing new life to objects from the past heralding some his largest and most expensive restorations to date – including a “Big Mac Jail” from a 1970s McDonalds PlayPlace and an authentic James Bond 1977 Esprit Lotus Submarine Car featured in the film The Spy Who Loved Me. When celebrity clients George Clinton of Parliament Funkadelic and legendary illusionist David Copperfield stop by the shop, the pressure rises in Rick’s world of one-of-a-kind items, impossible to find parts and tough deadlines, but despite the challenges there isn’t anything Rick’s Restorations can’t handle.
In the premiere episode on June 2, Rick and his team prepare for a pitch-perfect project as Rock N’ Roll Hall of Famer George Clinton arrives with a beaten-down 1923 Chickering quarter baby grand piano. Before the piano was damaged in a flood it was full of memories from the past four decades, as the Grandfather of Funk has written and recorded numerous songs using this piano including his hit Give up the Funk. This episode makes for the most spectacular reveal yet, as P-Funk puts on an over-the-top concert in honor of Rick restoring this classic instrument.
Additional restorations in the new episodes include: a knife throwing board from David Copperfield’s Museum of Conjuring Arts, a 1976 AMF Evel Knievel bicycle, a one-of-a-kind quarter-scale model of a 1932 Hudson car, a British 1950s Ariel Square Four motorcycle, a 1950s hockey pinball game, a 1900s cigar slot machine, and a 1970s arcade Punch-Out game given to the shop by Pawn Stars’ Rick Harrison.
