Shellie Layne Shellie’s Personal Tips to SPRING into Action At Home

It IS spring, but this chilly cold snap confuses me and all of nature. I’m not sure if I am supposed to continue to layer my Long Johns, tights and turtleneck sweaters under my clothes and I am certain the buds on the trees are just as clueless as to what to do next. This season typically bursts in with fresh vibrant, enchanting bright colored flowers, spectacular hues of red and orange that manifest ribbons in the sky at the rise and dawn of the sun; loud and melodic voices of birds and warmer breezes catapult us into a desire or yearning for change. In most cases this becomes most apparent in the interior and exterior of our homes. Cleaning, reorganizing, painting and planting suddenly become new priorities on our “To Do” lists, while Mr. Clean, Pine-Sol, Clorox, brooms, mops, sponges, air fresheners and paint replace food in our supermarket baskets.
Spring doesn’t have its name for nothing. This season, unlike summer, fall or winter seems to endow us with energy and simple motivation to do what we had no momentum or desire to accomplish in the preceding months. We tread fearlessly into areas in our homes that neither man nor beast dare to go. We attempt to de-clutter areas that have been foreboding, like that dark, spider web strung closet we were afraid to open for fear that something might fall out… jump out… or crawl out when opened! As much as spring cleaning and organizing are essential and make us feel good, for the normal busy person, time, not desire is usually the nemesis for getting it done and maintaining it.
I have found that my At Home “Do It Now” philosophy is helpful in this area too. Make-up stains, foundation and pressed powder residue (okay, girly-girl stuff) in the sink, toilet bowl rings and grimy showers make me crazy, but I found that the simple habit of keeping a bottle of cleaner in close proximity so I can spray, wipe and go in seconds allows me to accommodate my schedule while not allowing the crud in those areas to build and become a time consuming undertaking, not to mention just plain yucky.
When it comes to spring projects I have set aside one project per week or weekend and I don’t start another until the current project is complete. This may consist of planting and painting or closet and garage cleaning. Because these tasks require more time, I use my off or down time to tackle these seemingly insurmountable jobs. As a habit I make the bed when I get out of it, toss a load of laundry into the washer while fixing my fresh banana and mango fruit lose weight smoothie (did I say lose weight out-loud? Yup, that is part of my spring into action plan too!). I then spray, scrub and wipe as I go. I use larger chunks of time to enjoy my new found spring energy to rise with the sun, sing with the birds (maybe that’s a bit of an exaggeration) but I attempt to make my At Home interior and exterior the envy of the neighbors and it makes me feel great too.
Springing into action may mean quick cleaning while on the go and using well planned time to tackle those tasks that will have the greatest impact on the exterior and interior of our dwelling. It is also essential that spring time and the action that accompanies change makes us feel good not just about what we have done At Home, but physically, emotionally and spiritually.

Talladega Superspeedway Staff Teaches in Birmingham Schools as Part of Local Junior Achievement Program
Several Talladega Superspeedway staff members entered Birmingham area elementary schools to teach students about workforce readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy.
The staff members will be in front of their classes for the next couple of weeks teaching from lessons provided by Junior Achievement of Greater Birmingham, a non-profit group that allows volunteers from the business community to deliver a curriculum while sharing their personal and professional experiences and skills with students.
Talladega Superspeedway is providing volunteers at Rocky Ridge Elementary School, Vestavia Hills Elementary Cahaba Heights and Vincent Elementary School, reaching a total of 645 students in 34 classrooms. As volunteers, Talladega staff are helping students make the connection between what they are learning in school and what they will need to succeed in work and life.
“Our staff has had a wonderful time teaching important lessons to our country’s future leaders,” said Talladega Superspeedway Chairman Grant Lynch. “It’s crucial for these students to hear firsthand knowledge of the way business works in their community, and we’re happy to be there to give them guidance.”
To promote Talladega’s family-friendly atmosphere, the track has unveiled historic frontstretch ticket prices in 2014 for kids 12 and under. Kids can sit for free in some areas of the grandstands and receive $50 off regular pricing for all other areas of the grandstands.

2014 Toyota Prius Four

0

Cheryl Hybridby Cheryl Eldridge

The 2014 Toyota Prius Hybrid is one tough cookie. It might not be the most attractive car on the block, but it definitely defines the statement “beauty from within.”
My one week tester hatchback was coated in a classic silver metallic with gray interior, and thanks to Toyota’s new spacing, legroom and elbow-room was perfect for a family of five.
My Prius was loaded with all of the amenities, safety and convenience that any driver would enjoy.
For the past decade, the Toyota Prius has dominated the hybrid car segment. In its early years, the Prius faced little competition, but these days there are plenty of compact and midsize hybrids in this price range. The fact that Toyota’s iconic hybrid hatchback has remained number one is a testament to its packaging. The well-rounded 2014 Toyota Prius hits all the targets for most consumers shopping in this class.
The big contributor to the Prius’ evergreen popularity is its amazing fuel economy – the Prius’ EPA combined rating of 50 mpg is topped only by the smaller Prius C and much more expensive plug-in hybrids such as the Chevrolet Volt. The Prius is also a pleasant car to drive in the daily grind and  is an easy-to-park, comfortable and spacious vehicle. And then there’s the Prius’ strong record for reliability and longevity. Considering all these practical attributes, it’s no wonder you see Priuses used as taxicabs in many cities.
That said, the 2014 Toyota Prius remains the quintessential hybrid, and its blend of fuel efficiency, practicality, comfort and handy high-tech features makes it an easy choice in this segment.
The 2014 Toyota Prius is a five-passenger, four-door hatchback available in four trim levels: Two, Three, Four and Five. The “Five” is not to be confused with the Prius V, which is a larger wagon version of the Prius.
Standard equipment on the Prius Two includes 15-inch alloy wheels, heated power mirrors, a rear window wiper, keyless ignition/entry, cruise control, automatic climate control, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver seat, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, an advanced trip computer, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a 6.1-inch touchscreen display and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB audio interface.
The Prius Three gains an enhanced keyless entry system, a rearview camera, a navigation system, voice controls, satellite radio, HD radio and Toyota’s Entune system, which includes real-time information (traffic, weather, fuel prices, sports scores) and the ability to use apps like Pandora, iHeart Radio and Open Table via a connection with your smartphone.
My tester, the Prius Four gets you automatic headlights, an eight-way power driver seat, heated front seats, SofTex (leatherette) upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a JBL sound system with eight GreenEdge speakers.
The Prius Five features 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights and LED headlights.
An optional Solar Roof package for the Prius Three adds a sunroof and a solar-powered ventilation system that keeps the car cool to limit the burden on the air-conditioning system. It’s also offered for the Four, and then includes a head-up display, Safety Connect emergency communications and an upgraded navigation system with a 7-inch high-definition display and split-screen capability.
The Five’s Advanced Technology package adds adaptive cruise control, a pre-collision alert system, a lane-departure warning system, Safety Connect, a head-up display and the higher-quality navigation display.
Available on all trims is the Plus Appearance package, which adds unique 17-inch alloy wheels and a seven-piece aerodynamic body kit. To this, the Plus Performance package (availability depends on trim level) adds a sport-tuned suspension and unique badging.
The 2014 Toyota Prius is powered by a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine combined with a pair of electric motor/generators. Together they send a total output of 134 horsepower to the front wheels through a specialized continuously variable transmission (CVT).
On the safety side, every 2014 Toyota Prius comes standard with antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and a driver’s knee airbag. The Prius Four and Five can be equipped with Toyota’s Safety Connect emergency communications system, which includes emergency and roadside assistance, collision notification and stolen vehicle location. All but the Prius Two come standard with a rearview camera, while the Prius Five includes a frontal-collision warning system and a lane-departure warning system.
In government crash tests, the Prius received four stars (out of a possible five) for overall protection, four stars for overall frontal protection and five stars for overall side protection. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Prius the highest possible rating of “Good” in its moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side and roof strength tests. Its seat/head restraint design was also rated “Good” for whiplash protection in rear impacts.
The 2014 Toyota Prius features straightforward controls that jut out toward the driver in a “floating console” that provides a storage tray underneath. It’s stylish and also helps maximize cabin space. The digital instrument panel features a floating layer that displays audio, temperature and trip computer information when the driver touches those controls on the steering wheel, minimizing eye movement. Some drivers might find the overall design a bit too busy-looking, however.
The standard touchscreen operates many of the Prius’ high-tech features and is, for the most part, smartly designed. The Entune system in the Prius Three and above can be a hassle, though, since you have to install an app on your phone and register for an account; plus, you always need an active data connection to use Entune.
The Prius remains highly versatile. The hatchback body style provides considerably more cargo capacity than a typical midsize sedan, and the backseat offers plenty of space for passengers. Sadly, taller drivers still have to contend with a steering wheel that’s placed too far away. Even though there’s a telescoping column, it doesn’t come out nearly far enough to enable a comfortable driving position.
My sticker price loaded was $33,358 and I really enjoyed driving the Prius and am looking forward to testing the Prius  Five.
Until next week, drive, safe, buckle up, don’t text and drive and be a courteous driver. There’s nothing like being nice to someone,  you always get something in return, even if it’s a smile.

WHO IS YOUR GOD?
God is Lord of all – He is Creator – He is Mighty God – He is Everlasting Father – King of kings and Lord of lords – He is Prince of Peace – He is Everlasting – He is God of all knowledge, all powers – He is the Everlasting God who sees all and knows all. HALLELUJAH!
Has thou not known has thou not heard, the everlasting God, the Lord, the Creator of Heaven and earth, and the ends thereof, He faints not neither is He weary. There is no searching for His understanding. He gives power to the faint and to those that have no might He increases strength. Even the youth shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall. (Isaiah 40:28-30)
But, they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings of eagles they shall run and not be weary, and they shall walk and not faint. WHO IS YOUR GOD? He is Lord of Glory, the Lord of Host is His Name. Bless the Lord oh my soul, Bless the Lord, Bless the Lord, Oh my soul, Oh my soul and all that is within me – Bless His holy name – forget not all His benefits. The Lord forgives all my sins and iniquities. He heals all my diseases.  WHO IS YOUR GOD? He is Lord of creation. HE IS MY GOD – HALLELUJAH!

How Cancer Patients Can Share, Be Heard and Give Back

0

Cancer Patients(NAPSI)—If you or someone you care about has ever been diagnosed with cancer, there is an online resource that may benefit you.
Where To Turn
People with any type of cancer can share their thoughts and concerns with others with similar experiences in the Cancer Experience Registry. It was launched by the Cancer Support Community (CSC), an international nonprofit organization that wants to ensure that everyone affected by cancer is empowered by knowledge, strengthened by action and sustained by community.
CSC’s Cancer Experience Registry is a research study for people living with cancer to talk about the issues they confront, listen to what others have to say and give back to the larger cancer community.
“We know that cancer patients at every stage of their journey have many concerns and that people can feel isolated or alone,” said Joanne Buzaglo, Vice President of Research and Training at CSC and a two-time cancer survivor. “Our Cancer Experience Registry provides patients with an opportunity to have their voices heard – and also to ‘pay it forward’ in a sense, to share what they have learned from their experience with other people who are facing these same kinds of issues.”
What You Get And Can Give
Anyone who has been diagnosed with cancer at any time can join. The process involves filling out a detailed survey to help identify the most important social and emotional issues for each individual. The data will be used to develop new programs, educational tools, policy initiatives and research projects aimed at improving the quality of care and outcomes for everyone impacted by cancer.
“The Cancer Experience Registry connects patients who are going through active treatment and those who are survivors in a way that allows us to make a difference in our own lives while we are helping others at the same time. By collecting and sharing this information, we are also identifying the gaps that exist today, not just in cancer care, but also in communication,” said Kay Johnson, a chronic myeloid leukemia survivor.
As the registry grows beyond its current level of over 6,000 members, CSC plans to add new programs for patients who share specific cancer diagnoses or concerns. The Registry also produces a monthly newsletter that addresses the full range of issues, from side effects to financial worries to diet and nutrition. It provides updates on the data from Registry participants and lets readers submit and respond to questions.
“The Cancer Experience Registry is a very rich and important resource for cancer patients,” said Kim Thiboldeaux, President and CEO of CSC, “but what makes it so special is that the insights we are gaining from the Registry come directly from the people who are living with cancer and help us identify and deepen our understanding of the often-overlooked needs of cancer patients.”
