On January 20, (MLK Day), known as a National Day of Service, the brothers of the Alpha Phi Chapter of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. provided some needed support to our brothers in Christ at the Firehouse Shelter: The Men of Omega gave 112 men’s winter coats; a Donation Check of $260; served over 300 lunches; helped package individual toiletry item bags. This great community service event documented approximately 100 man hours. The staff of The Firehouse Shelter was greatly appreciative of our efforts. We far exceeded our goals for this project and all your efforts do not go unrecognized. Thanks again for support in this endeavour.
1 Thessalonians 5:14-22:
And we urge you, brothers, admonish the idle, encourage the fainthearted, help the weak, be patient with them all. See that no one repays anyone evil for evil, but always seek to do good to one another and to everyone. Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
Special thanks:

photo 1 Following a thrilling triumph in the state basketball finals, the Wenonah High School Dragons girls had another eventful day on March 13, one filled with life lessons to balance athletic prowess.
Their day began with the Jefferson County Commission to receive a resolution in their honor that was sponsored by Sandra Little Brown. The team, Principal Regina Carr-Hope, and their coach Emanuel Bell went on to the chambers of Houston Brown, the Presiding Judge of Jefferson County. Judge Brown’s inspirational talk with the team emphasized excellence of character for them as future leaders, making wise choices, and the history and procedures of the courthouse.
Their next visit was to the drug court and Judge Shanta’ Owens. Principal Hope stated that the consequences of drug use and bad choices became clear to the students as Judge Owens spoke to them.
As a fitting conclusion, the team enjoyed lunch with George Sarris at the Fish Market. Sarris, a partner of the school’s Academy of Hospitality and Tourism, related to students the ins and outs of food service business behind the dining area. The students were excited that Mr. Sarris even offered assistance with employment opportunities.

George Wallace vs Foreign Policy
by Jesse J. Lewis, Sr.

When George Wallace was running for President of the United States, one of the main criticisms regarding his potential presidency was that he knew nothing about foreign affairs.
When a reporter asked him about foreign affairs in a press conference his response was – “Yes, it’s true, I don’t have much knowledge in dealing with foreigners. What I do know is every time I deal with them I get screwed.”
There were a lot of politicians, want-to-bes and used-to-bes, criticizing President Obama as it relates to dealing with Russia. They go so far as to praise Putin, stating how strong his leadership abilities are, his standing behind what he says and Barack Obama is a weakling.
My question to them is, if Putin keeps annexing territories, would they feel the same way if Putin tried to annex the United States. Every President, starting with Reagan, has had difficulty dealing with Russia and as long as Putin is in there, the situation will never change.
According to the latest news from CNN’s writers Alla Eshchenko and Laura Smith-Spark, Putin denied that Russia had been militarily involved in Crimea, despite what has been stated by authors in the Ukraine capital and international observers. “We have not used our armed forces in Crimea,” Putin said.
He also said that Russia’s military forces did not enter Crimea in the current crisis, but “were already there” in accordance with previous international negotiations. He praised the 22,000 Russian troops in Crimea for avoiding bloodshed.
Russia’s Black Sea fleet is based in the Crimea port city of Sevastopol but the movements of its forces within Crimea are supposed to be agreed upon with Kiev.
Acting Ukrainian Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk called Russian annexation of Crimea “a robbery on an international scale.” In the joint news conference with Yatsenyuk, Ukraine’s interim President Oleksandr Turchynov told reporters that Russian President Vladmir Putin is “mimicking the fascists of the last century” by annexing Crimea, which he said “has been and will be a part of our country.”
Putin, who was greeted by a standing ovation and whose remarks were punctuated by regular and enthusiastic applause, also accused the West of “double standards” and cynicism in its response to the crisis in Crimea, citing Kosovo, which split from Serbia, as an example of a precedent.
Western powers slapped sanctions on more than two dozen Russian officials and their allies in Crimea, while Ukrainian officials vowed they would never accept the territory’s annexation by Russia.
But the lower house of Russia’s parliament, the Duma, shrugged off the sanctions, going so far as to draft a statement calling for all its members to be listed.
“Today we suggest that the Americans include all the members of the Duma on their sanctions list. Our principles aren’t for sale and we aren’t afraid of sanctions.”
It will be interesting to see what the outcome will be.

The Way I See It

Hollis WormsbyImprove Your Credit Score and Stop Making Someone Else Rich

by Hollis Wormsby, Jr.

Credit is one of the basic needs in a society such as ours, and as such our credit score, which is a measure of our credit worthiness, is one of our most important assets or liabilities depending on how we handle our obligations.
A good credit score means that one can qualify for premium finance rates. A bad credit score means one cannot get premium rates and may not qualify for financing at all. Why is this important, because most of us cannot pay cash for large purchases such as our homes or our cars?  A bad credit score can mean that you cannot get a mortgage or that you only qualify for a sub-prime mortgage. Sub-prime mortgages have higher interest rates and in many cases predatory clauses, such as balloon payments and pre-payment penalties. Predatory lending is considered one of the driving forces behind the ongoing housing crisis.
Let’s look at a simple example of credit impact by looking at a likely mortgage rate with two different credit scenarios. In each scenario all variables except credit score are the same. We have the same income, same amount of debt, and the same asset to be financed. In scenario number one where the credit score is over 700 points and the interest rate is 3.8 percent, the monthly payment on a $160,000 mortgage would be $745. Take a credit score of 550 and a subprime loan at say 8 percent, which still might be too generous, and the payment changes to $1,174, that is a difference of $429 a month that you would be giving away because of a poorly managed credit history.
One more example and I will move on to strategies to raise your score. Let us say that your score is even lower than 550, so low in fact that no reputable lender will lend you money at any rate, and yet you have an urgent need. You are now headed to cash advance hell and interest rates north of 400 percent per year.
So we all agree that our credit score is important and that it is important to do what we can to keep it as high as possible. What are some of the steps we can take to turn our credit score around?  I will note that while I am not a financial planner, I do feel somewhat qualified to speak on this subject because due to sloppiness my credit score once dropped to 550, and realizing the impact of that score I set out to change it and today enjoy a score over 700 points and the economic power that comes with it.
I think there are three major components to a person’s credit score.  Those components are: your payment history; your percent of available credit, and the age of your accounts. These three factors together make up your credit score. Let’s look at each one separately and also let’s look at what strategy we can employ to improve each component.
The first component is very simple. The best measure of whether you will pay a future debt is your past payment history. Any time you allow a payment to be reported as more than thirty days late, it lowers your credit score. Any time you allow a judgment to be recorded against you, it lowers your credit score. To get the maximum  points for this component you have to begin to pay all of your bills on time, and you have to do it for years. Part of my strategy here was to put as many reportable bills as possible on automatic pay, so that they could not be late and I did not have to spend my time worrying about them.
The second component of your credit score is your percent of available credit. This is the ratio between what you owe and how much credit you have available in your revolving accounts. Revolving accounts are accounts like letters of credit and credit cards. A good ratio for maximum score is to try and keep your available credit at close to 80 percent. What does this mean? Let us say that you have total available credit of $10,000, and your outstanding debt is $1,800, this would make your percent of available credit 82 percent and would be an awesome score on this component. But let us say instead that you owe $7,800. In this case your percent of available credit would only be 22 percent and this would drag your credit score way down.  Managing this component is one the big challenges in credit rebuilding, because at one level you have to gain credit access, but at the same time you also have to have the discipline not to misuse it.
The final component that is looked at with your credit score is the age of your accounts. One of the big mistakes I made when I began trying to improve my credit score was I closed accounts as I paid them off.  On the surface this seems like a good idea, but in reality it lowered my credit score for two reasons. In closing accounts I reduced my available credit, and thus lowered the percent of credit that was available to me, and in closing my older accounts I lowered my credit score further because the age of my accounts became newer. So what I recommend is that you do one of two things with older credit accounts; first you can just stick the cards in a drawer and not use them, but after a year they will probably get cancelled for non- use. Or you could assign a specific bill like your cable bill to a card and use the card only to pay that bill and do automatic payments for the amount of what you charge to the card. The second way is the way that helped me the most, because as you make payments on cards and stay timely they will increase your limit, which increases your credit score.
Having a low credit score can be very embarrassing and very frustrating, but it does not have to be a lifetime sentence. Try these three simple steps: improve your payment history, keep your percent of available credit around 80 percent, and keep your older accounts active, and see if your score doesn’t rise. Unless you are content living in cash advance hell, paying on a sub-prime mortgage, and overpaying for your cars, if you know that you have a challenging credit score, you have to do this. Or at least that’s the way I see it.

Getting Covered Means I Get to Focus on What Matters: My Kids

0

ShellieBy Shellie Braggs
I work hard helping at-risk young adults in Dallas get the job training and life skills they need to make better lives for themselves and their families. I know how important that is because I’m a single mom trying to do the best by my children.
My kids are great, and I want only the best for them. But one thing I wasn’t always able to do was provide health insurance for them. I don’t get insurance through my employer because I’m a contractor, and I couldn’t afford the $500 monthly premiums for my children and myself.
Not having health insurance for the past seven years – my children were uninsured for about a year – has weighed heavily on my mind. I’ve had to make tough decisions. I managed to cobble together free or inexpensive health services through local clinics and my church, but it was never easy.
I felt helpless being unable to provide something as basic as health care to my family.
That’s why I was thrilled to find out that I could find affordable, quality health insurance through the Health Insurance Marketplace. It was cheaper and easier than I had thought.
All I had to do was log onto HealthCare.gov and explore my options. I selected a Silver plan – in no more than 15 minutes! I qualified for reduced costs, so my premium is only $131 a month. And my children are covered by the Children’s Health Insurance Program.
Having insurance that covers preventive services is going to help me stay healthy and catch potential problems early – a great peace of mind I’m grateful to have. I’ve had two repeat mammograms that I had to pay for out of pocket, and I need to monitor myself for possible growths. My new insurance covers mammograms at no additional cost.
It’s a great relief. If you’re sick, you can’t take care of your kids.
So I’m very excited to finally be covered. As a single mom, I have an obligation to take care of myself and my kids and now I can focus on that.
My coverage went into effect on March 1. I urge all moms and dads to get the security that comes with a Health Insurance Marketplace plan. Get covered through the Marketplace at HealthCare.gov by March 31, the end of open enrollment for the current year. Don’t delay.
