MONTGOMERY – Alabama State Head Soccer Coach Jodie Smith will host his first annual Winter Identification camp on Saturday, January 25 at the ASU Soccer Complex.
The event is open to girls ages 15 and older and provides players an opportunity to see for themselves the expectations coaches look for on the college level. All instruction will be done by the Lady Hornets’ coaching staff including assistant coaches Kathryn Saunders and Amber Bradley.
The camp setting will allow field players to be challenged on speed of play and decision making through small sided games, ending with an 11 on 11 contest. All goalkeepers will receive individual attention focusing on organization and communication.
Registration for the camp is $60 and space is limited. For more information contact the ASU Soccer Office at jodiesmith@alasu.edu.
MONTGOMERY- The Alabama State University baseball team signed four more recruits to bring the total to nine, addressing some much needed areas of concern.
“One of the things we wanted to address was the voids that we will have next year,” head baseball coach Mervyl Melendez said. “I want to believe that when these players get here they’re going to be surrounded by upperclassmen that will lead the way and get them to play at different level.”
The group of signees includes two outfielders: Sebastian Rivera (Orlando, Fla.), Palance “PJ” Harris II (Frisco, Tex.); one infielder, a first baseman Gustavo Rios (Kissimmee, Fla.) and one pitcher Darren Kelley (Ocala, Fla.).
The signees are listed as follows:
Sebastian Rivera: 5-11 · 170 · OF · Orlando, Fla. · Timber Creek HS
Coach Melendez on Sebastian:
“Sebastian will make an immediate impact at the Division I level. His frame and ability to hit make him one of the top high school players in the entire country. Sebastian comes from one of the best travel ball organizations in the country, Florida Travel Ball directed by George Gonzalez.”
Palance “PJ” Harris II: 6-0 · 200 · OF · Frisco, Tex. · Frisco HS
Coach Melendez on PJ:
“PJ is one of the purest left handed hitters in the state of Texas. He possesses great power and is a phenomenal athlete. PJ will pay immediate dividends for our program. He will be a consistent hitter on the college level and will have the opportunity to play professional baseball after three years at ASU. Getting a quality corner guy like PJ is a prime example of where our program is heading. ”
Darren Kelly: 6-4 · 185 · RHP · Ocala, Fla. · Vanguard HS
Coach Melendez on Darren:
“Darren will be an impact pitcher for us right away. He has an imposing frame when on the mound and competes really hard. He is another product from the travel ball organization FTB. He will only get stronger and will be a mainstay in the pitching rotation for the next three or four years.”
Gustavo Rios: 6-3 · 240 · 1B · Kissimmee, Fla. · Osceola HS
Coach Melendez on Gustavo:
“Gustavo is a physical right handed hitter with tremendous power to all fields. We expect him to hit in the middle of our lineup and drive in a ton of runs. Gustavo is an athletic first baseman and will definitely strengthen us on the right side of the diamond.”
Alagasco will be replacing cast iron gas pipes with plastic gas pipes in the Marks Village community. The project is expected to start later this week and continue until March 2014.
Following the Dec. 17 explosion that killed one resident, Alagasco moved this year’s leak survey—which is conducted every two years as routine maintenance— to January, so the company could discover and address any existing leaks within the system. The company’s decision to accelerate the pipe replacement project is a result of the data collected from the survey.
“We conduct leak surveys all over our system and all over the city and we’ve conducted a survey out here and we did find some leaks,” said Reggie Johnson, liaison for Algasco. “We’ve conducted surveys in other areas. That’s what we do with our system to make sure the public is safe. After we did perform a survey we determined that we were going to go ahead and replace the pipelines in this area.”
Survey results and personnel reports are the determining factor for these projects.
“In addition to performing surveys, we take our field personnel information that we get from them combined with the two reports,” Johnson said. “That’s what determines when we do replacement projects.”
The upcoming project will replace four miles of pipe in the community and will start with the street pipelines that run along and underneath the streets. The method that will be used in this process will not cause any disruption to the normal function of the neighborhood.
“There’s going to be very minimal disturbance,” Johnson said, “What they’re going to use is a process called directional boring, and directional boring is a process where they can draw a hole using a machine and a camera to go underground with this device that bores a hole underground without doing a lot of excavation. Then they slide the pipe through that hole. There will be some excavation but not the normal process with a big open ditch coming through every person’s yard. So that’s done to cut down on excavation and it’s a much faster process and safer to do it that way.”
Street pipeline replacement will be followed by replacement of service pipelines that run from the street pipelines to residents, after which the gas will be redirected from the old pipelines to the new ones. Any needed yard restoration will be done after construction is complete.
This process will strictly adhere to all regulations.
“We follow all the federal guidelines for pipeline replacement— DLT, the Alabama Public Service Commission. We do things within the regulatory guidelines so far as replacing pipe so it falls within those scopes in what we’re doing.”
The pipe replacement project should not be a concern for residents, said Johnson, who has 35 years of experience in the gas business.
“It’s nothing for the residents to be alarmed about. I’m here on site if they have any concerns about gas issues. They can come talk to me. I can put them at ease if they have any questions relating to gas, if they have any concerns or issues they want to talk about.”
If residents have questions about home appliances or anything gas related, they should be reported directly to Alagasco, Johnson stressed, so the company can address the issue.
“We’ve been going out checking the customers’ appliances, checking the pipe system going into the residences and evaluating everything and letting them know that everything is safe,” he said. “There is nothing for them to be concerned about.”
Residents should not rely on rumors and instead call Alagasco directly. Anytime a call is made it is recorded in Alagasco’s dispatch area as is required by the Alabama Public Service Commission.
“If the residents have concerns as it relates to gas safety, the best way to get those questions answered is to come out and actually talk to us about it,” Johnson said. “We don’t know they’re having a problem if they don’t contact us. So they should contact us and we can put their minds at rest by coming out and meeting with them and answering their questions.”
If residents smell gas in their home or in a neighboring home, they should leave the area immediately and call Alagasco at 1-800-292-4008.

Oftentimes, I am sent books that offer insightful information. One of such is Any Given Monday: Sports Injuries and How to Prevent Them for Athletes, Parents, and Coaches-Based on My Life in Sports Medicine. Written by Dr. James R. Andrews with Don Yeager, Any Given Monday is a much needed medical reference that should be a part of all parents libraries. It is also now in paperback.
We are living in an age where children’s games are often electronic in nature. This leads to surprising numbers of obesity in youth. To combat this, parents, in conjunction with local schools, have revved up their physical education programs by offering a number of sports activities in their curriculum. In order to guarantee the optimum in safety while children participate in sport theme activities, coaches, staff and parents should be educated on the proper techniques in preventing injuries and treating them. This factor alone facilitates the need for Dr. Andrews’ book.
There are numerous topics addressed in Any Given Monday. They include: Sports Medicine, Sports Medicine Future, Warm up Exercises, Myths and Concussions. Additionally, there is a listing of sports (cheerleading, football, dance, rowing, etc.), the injury it could possibly cause and how to prevent it. Proper fitting safety gear, conditioning, overuse/overtrain injuries and a plethora of other are covered in laymen’s terms. Drawing off of Dr. Andrews’ years of practice by providing sound advice, recommendations and specific suggestions, Any Given Monday is the go-to tool for sports injury prevention.
Dr. James R. Andrews is an orthopedic surgeon, sport medicine specialist, and a pioneer in arthroscopic surgery. He is the team doctor for Auburn University, the University of Alabama, the Washington Redskins and the Tampa Bay Rays. In 2010, he was the sole doctor that was named one of the most powerful people in the NFL by Sports Illustrated. He is a LSU School of Medicine graduate and a founder of the American Sports Medicine Institute (ASMI) in Birmingham, Ala. and the Andrews Research and Education Institute in Gulf Breeze Florida.
Don Yaeger has authored over 22 books which includes seven New York Times Bestsellers. He is also a fomer Sports Illustrated associated editor.
The ultimate in pure soul presented in its original form! This is what you get once you listen to Always Soulful, the latest collection from singer, songwriter, producer and multi-instrumental Shake Anderson. This brother sings it like it is – straight from the heart with nothing but solid emotions. He is awesome!
Shake Anderson’s career spans decades as he often played numerous instruments backing rhythm and blues A listers. He is also the author of numerous hits as his songwriting skills are incomparable. Now Anderson has acted upon the advice that soul legend Ray Charles once gave him, he has recorded his own songs. Anderson states “I’ll never forget it – he (Ray Charles) told me I need to stop writing songs for others and sing the songs myself. One thing is for sure, Always Soulful is a fantastic introduction.
Always Soulful is comprised of 15 tracks all of which he wrote, with the exception of the finale (Exodus by Bob Marley). The set opens with “Where Angels Never Go.” It encompasses a slow tempo that’s very emotional. “Sad Comment” is a lively tune that is perfect to dance to. “The Only Game In Town” is simply a beautiful tune. The same can be said about “You” as the lyrics and melody are perfect. An old school blues feel is heard in “A Mind To Leave” and “Baby Why.” These tracks are on fire! Always Soulful offers the finest in great, soulful blues – the kind of music there is never enough of.
Sammy Louis aka Sam “Shake” Anderson is a Louisville, Ky. native. He has worked with Ruben Studdard, Aretha Franklin, Curtis Mayfield, Bruce Hornsby, B.B. King and countless others. He was also the music director for the Impressions.
Track listing: Where the Angels Never Go; If I Say It; Sad Comment; Never Be Fooled Again; Wasted Away; Set It Off; The Na Na Song; When 1 & 1 = 3; Sold Me Down the River; A Mind to Leave; Baby Why; Tumblin Down; The Only Game in Town; You; and Exodus.
