Police: Pastor Raped Girls, Said ‘Devil Was Inside’ Victims

PastorBy NewsOne Staff

Jacoby Kindred, 61, pastor with Minnesota’s One Accord Ministries, is accused of raping the daughters of his son’s girlfriend beginning when they were only 6- and 8- years old.
Kindred allegedly told at least one victim that “the devil was inside her and he could take the demons out of her.”
The victims are now 15- and 16-years-old. Kindred’s alleged crimes were discovered when the mother found a note written by her daughter detailing sexual acts with the pastor.
The victims, now ages 16 and 14, told investigators that the sexual molestation took place during sleepovers at Kindred’s house, and involved fondling, oral stimulation and penetration. They said the defendant told them that the “devil was inside them” and that the sexual activity would remove the demons. The girls told detectives that the abuse occurred repeatedly for approximately nine years.
When police questioned Kindred he told them he was a minister for One Accord Ministries, a church without a building. He agreed that as the father of the boyfriend of the children’s mother, they would stay overnight at his home, but he denied the allegations of abuse. He claimed the girls’ mother made up the allegations because her new boyfriend doesn’t like him. Eventually he ended the interview, saying that police had no DNA and that “you weren’t there, nobody was there.”
Kindred faces up to 30 years in jail on each rape count.

NAACP Congratulates Michelle Howard for Being Named First Four-Star Female Admiral

0

michelle-j-howard1 BALTIMORE, Md. – The NAACP is proud to congratulate Michelle Janine Howard on her nomination by President Barack Obama for appointment to the rank of admiral and assignment as vice chief of naval operations. This appointment will make Howard the first female four-star Admiral.
Last year, Admiral Howard received the NAACP’s Chairman’s Award during the 44th  NAACP Image Awards.
“This is a historic and well-deserved appointment for Admiral Howard,” stated Roslyn M. Brock, Chairman of the NAACP National Board of Directors. “Admiral Howard serves as a true inspiration for women, particularly women of color, in the military and across the nation. We look forward to her continued service to our country as a four-star admiral.”
On March 12, 1999, Howard became the first African American woman to command a ship in the U.S. Navy.
From May 2004 to September 2005, Howard was the commander of Amphibious Squadron Seven. Deploying with Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 5, operations included tsunami relief efforts in Indonesia and maritime security operations in the North Arabian Gulf.
Vice Admiral Howard is the recipient of several awards for her service. While serving on board Lexington, she received the secretary of the Navy/Navy League Captain Winifred Collins award in May 1987. Howard is also the recipient of the 2008 Women of Color Science Technology Engineering and Math (STEM) Career Achievement Award, the 2009 Dominion Power Strong Men and Women Excellence in Leadership Award, and the 2011 USO Military Woman of the Year.

Jackson-area Save-A-Lot Settles EEOC Sexual Harassment Lawsuit

Save-A-LotWomen pressured for sex, degraded by senior management official, agency charged

JACKSON, Miss. – A Jackson-area Save-A-Lot grocery store operated by Venture, Inc. will pay $325,000 and furnish other relief to settle a class sexual harassment lawsuit brought by the U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the agency has announced.
The EEOC lawsuit charged that a manager employed by Venture repeatedly propositioned female employees for sex, even offering money and benefits in exchange for sex. The EEOC alleged that the manager used sexually offensive and degrading language, made graphic comments describing sex acts and engaged in other sexually degrading behavior. More than 20 women were victims of the sexually hostile workplace, the EEOC said.
Actionable sexual harassment under Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 includes unwanted sexual advances or other unwelcome conduct motivated by the victim’s gender. The EEOC filed suit in U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Mississippi, Jackson Division (EEOC v. Venture, Inc. d/b/a Save-A-Lot, 3:11-cv-596-WHB-RHW) after first attempting to reach a pre- litigation settlement through its conciliation process.
The 30-month consent decree resolving the suit provides that the company will put a number of measures in place to prevent harassing behavior and have in place procedures in the event it does occur. Those measures include training for Venture’s managers in preventing and responding to harassment; notices posted in all Mississippi Venture, Inc.’s locations informing employees about the lawsuit’s resolution and their rights under federal anti-discrimination laws; and a court injunction prohibiting further harassment and retaliation.
“There is no excuse for the sort of misconduct that was charged here –
C. Emanuel Smith, EEOC regional attorney, added, “We are pleased that Venture has implemented improved reporting procedures and training. We encourage other employers in the industry to tackle this issue in a similar fashion and provide improved workplace protection.”
Preventing workplace harassment through systemic enforcement and targeted outreach is one of six national priorities identified by the EEOC’s Strategic Enforcement Plan.

The EEOC enforces federal laws prohibiting employment discrimination. The Birmingham District Office of the EEOC oversees Alabama and parts of Mississippi and Florida. Further information about the EEOC is available on the agency’s web site at www.eeoc.gov.

Atlanta high school student suspended for hugging teacher: TV

0

Sam MartinATLANTA (Reuters) – A suburban Atlanta high school student has been suspended for a year for hugging a teacher, a television station reported.

The suspension could derail Sam McNair’s chances of obtaining a college athletic scholarship, his mother, April McNair told Atlanta station WGCL.
“He’s a senior. He plays football and was getting ready for lacrosse and you’re stripping him of even getting a full scholarship for athletics for college,” April McNair told the station.
McNair, 17, was suspended December 3 after a school hearing officer ruled he violated the Gwinnett County Schools sexual harassment rules, the station said. The TV report did not identify the teacher.
Sloan Roach, a spokeswoman for the school system, told Reuters she is limited in what she can say about the case since it is a disciplinary matter.
The McNairs could not be immediately reached for comment.
The station reported the teacher also accused McNair of kissing her on the cheek and the back of her neck during the hug. Citing the school disciplinary report, the station said the teacher said she had previously warned McNair that hugs were inappropriate. Reuters could not immediately confirm the contents of the disciplinary report.
In the WGCL interview, Sam McNair said the teacher never warned him against hugging and says he did not kiss or sexually harass the teacher.
“Something so innocent can be perceived as something totally opposite,” McNair said.
Roach said the suspension was handed down after a “review of the known facts.” She said school officials take into account witness testimony and a student’s past disciplinary history when they examine disciplinary issues.
The decision can be appealed to Georgia’s State Board of Education, she said.
WGCL reported that Sam McNair has a school disciplinary record but not for sexual harassment.

BIRMINGHAM CIVIL RIGHTS INSTITUTE CELEBRATES KWANZAA

0

Kwanzaa-Myers BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) will celebrate the spirit of family and community with its annual Kwanzaa program on Thursday, December 26. The event kicks off with a hands-on workshop at 5 p.m. in the Abraham L. Woods Community Meeting Room. Elinor Burks will lead this creative activity for families.
The community celebration begins at 6 p.m. in the Odessa Woolfolk Gallery, highlighting the principle, Umoja or “Unity,” which is the principle of unity in family, relationships, and heart.  It is one of the seven principles or “Nguzo Saba” of Kwanzaa and is celebrated and practiced on a single special day during Kwanzaa and ideally continued throughout the year. Additionally, the celebration will feature music, youth discussion on the principle of Unity, African drummers and a performance by Spoken Word artist, Glenwood.
Kwanzaa – which means “first fruits of the harvest” in Swahili – is an African American cultural holiday with a focus on the traditional African values of family, community responsibility, commerce, and self-improvement. It was founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga and is celebrated December 26-January 1.
“Kwanzaa is wonderful time for people to gather and reflect on the spirit of family,” says Ahmad Ward, BCRI Director of Education and Exhibitions. “Each year we enjoy seeing the community come together for this very important celebration.”
The program is free and open to the public. Refreshments will be served.
For more information, contact Ahmad Ward, BCRI Head of Education and Exhibition, at 328-9696 x 234.
