BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – The memorial for the four girls killed in the
1963 bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church will be shipped this week from Mussi Artworks Foundry in Berkeley, California. The life size bronze and steel sculpture will be transported to Birmingham, installed and unveiled Saturday, September 14 at 4p.m.
“This is very exciting for the Four Spirits Inc. board, the people and organizations who have graciously supported this project and the entire community,” board vice chairman Chervis Isom says. “Our objective is to create an appropriate and lasting public memorial for the four girls. We are thankful to sculptor Elizabeth MacQueen for her tireless work.”
The memorial, which features the four girls at a bench surrounded by doves, is nearly 10 feet tall and five feet long. It will be placed on the corner of Sixteenth Street North and Sixth Avenue North at the edge of Kelly Ingram Park.
MacQueen, a Birmingham native, says she has tried to capture what she felt about each girl based on her research and discussions with several family members. She describes the design as “full of emotion and movement.”
Four Spirits Inc. is nearing its goal of $250,000 to fund the project. A fundraiser is scheduled for Thursday, September 5, from 5p.m. until 6:30p.m. at Wiggins Childs Quinn and Pantazis LLC at The Historic Kress Building. Alabama’s First Lady Dianne Bentley and Birmingham’s First Lady Dr. Sharon Bell will serve as honorary co-chairs of the event.
“We are honored to have the support of Mrs. Bentley and Dr. Bell as we work to memorialize the four girls, whose sacrifice transformed the nation,” Four Spirits board member and Birmingham attorney Martha Bozeman says.
“We look forward to people coming out Thursday to learn more about this project,” fellow board member and United Way of Central Alabama President and CEO Drew Langloh says. “Everyone I talk with about this project wants to be involved.”
Donations can be made online at FourSpirits1963.com.

Four Spirits Inc. is a nonprofit organization formed for the purpose of soliciting funds and contracting for the establishment of an appropriate and lasting memorial in honor of the four girls killed in the bombing of the Sixteenth Street Baptist Church on September

Verizon Wireless invests $49 million in Alabama Network in first half of 2013

0

verizon-wireless-logo4G Network build out substantially complete in the State

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Wireless calling, text messaging and surfing the Web on the Verizon Wireless network is now easier and faster for residents and travelers in Alabama, thanks to heavy investments Verizon Wireless made during the first half of 2013. From January through June, the company invested more than $49 million to expand its wireless broadband and voice networks across the state. Verizon’s 4G LTE network is now substantially complete in Alabama, representing the vast majority of the company’s 3G footprint that provides coverage across tens of thousands of square miles in the state, from Muscle Shoals to Mobile.
Since 2010, the company has invested more than $361 million on its network in Alabama, with a significant portion of that supporting its 4G LTE rollout; Verizon’s ongoing network investment in the state now totals more than $949 million since the company was formed in 2000.
Over the first six months of 2013, the company expanded availability of its 4G LTE network in cities such as Alexander City, Clanton, Cullman, Demopolis, Hamilton, Russellville, Talladega and more. As a result, Verizon Wireless users all over Alabama can stream video, share music and photos, download files and surf the Web with speeds up to 10 times faster than before. As of June 27, 2013, Verizon Wireless’ 4G LTE network is available in 500 markets covering nearly 301 million people nationwide, more than 95 percent of the U.S. population.

Other 2013 Verizon Wireless Alabama Highlights

•  More than 89 billion voice and data transmissions and more than 105 billion minutes of airtime were logged on the Verizon Wireless network in Alabama during the first six months of 2013.
•  Wireless data traffic increased over 99.9% from the same time period in 2012.

“Alabamians need to communicate at today’s speed of business and Verizon Wireless’s 4G network has you covered. Our 4G LTE network is revolutionizing what businesses and consumers can do with the devices in their hands, and we know this connectivity will be a key communications and technology enabler for many years to come,” said Jonathan LeCompte, president – Georgia/Alabama Region, Verizon Wireless.
The numbers show that Alabama consumers and businesses are taking advantage of Verizon’s 4G LTE network: data traffic on the network increased nearly 325 percent from 2012 to 2013 in the state.
Nationally, 57 percent of Verizon Wireless’ data traffic is now carried over the 4G LTE network, demonstrating dramatic adoption of the new technology.
Verizon’s capital investment in Alabama also fuels year-round preparations for severe weather such as tornadoes, floods and wildfires, when network reliability is crucial. The company maintains a fleet of cells on wheels (COWS), cells on light trucks (COLTS) and generators on trailers (GOaTS) for immediate deployment to provide extra network capacity when disasters strike.

OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network airs new original Docu-Series ‘CRAZY.SEXY.LIFE.’

0

Crazy LOS ANGELES – OWN: Oprah Winfrey Network announced that it has ordered straight to series the new original docu-series “Crazy.Sexy.Life.” about the fast-paced lives of four fabulous friends living in New York City.  The network will offer a special sneak preview of the series on Tuesday, September 3 at 10 p.m. ET/PT following the fall finale of Tyler Perry’s popular drama series “The Haves and the Have Nots” at 9 p.m. ET/PT.  The series will premiere in early 2014.
“We feel strongly that ‘Crazy.Sexy.Life.’ will resonate with our viewers,” said Sheri Salata, president, OWN. “Set against the backdrop of America’s most vibrant and competitive city, this show details what real life is all about for a quartet of very different personalities who have embraced one another as ‘family’ for more than a decade, and who depend on one another unconditionally.”

A bit about “Crazy.Sexy.Life.”
Kiyah, Bershan, Chenoa and Tiffany have known each other for more than 10 years, and are constant sources of inspiration, support, competition and companionship to one another.  Kiyah, an ambitious and successful celebrity hair stylist, is the link that brought the four friends together, and New York City’s legendary Harlem neighborhood is where the quartet come together on a regular basis … over drinks, lunches, dinners, you name it. Two are married, two are single, and all are strong and fiercely independent women who believe in living out their dreams and not letting anybody or anything get in their way.
As she approaches the big 4-0, Kiyah is hearing the very loud ticking of her biological clock, even though her 27 year-old boyfriend may not be “the one.”  Every minute counts for Kiyah and, as she says, “this next chapter in life is the one that counts most.”  She loves her girlfriends and knows them all very well, and is not afraid to share her insights and opinions on each of them. Chenoa put her life and a professional photography career on hold to build a family with her loving husband. However, after spending more than $150,000 on fertility treatments, she is not even certain traditional marriage is right for her any more.
Bershan is a survivor, both literally and figuratively. Stage four breast cancer didn’t stop her and she is not letting anything else, either. She is a dynamic businesswoman who earned her success through hard work and talent, and she appreciates every moment. Bershan married well, and has enjoyed the perks of a wealthy husband for several years now, but she is too independent to be “kept,” so she is ready to stake her claim as a successful businesswoman. Tiffany, also a breast cancer survivor, is an outspoken free spirit who has always made her own way. She manages a hot boutique fashion house in Soho, and doesn’t need anybody to take care of her.
Even though both are breast cancer survivors and should be predisposed to love and support one another without question, Bershan and Tiffany are not really the best of friends.  A bit of bad blood stemming from a trip to Africa to promote breast cancer awareness that didn’t go quite as planned has left the pair somewhat at odds.
Played out against the vibrant background of New York City, the relationships these four women have with one another are joyous, challenging, competitive, supportive, and everything else that real-life friends share. Through the group’s adventures, misadventures, romances, successes and life-altering struggles, they may not always see eye-to-eye, but when push comes to shove, they are there for each other with solid and unwavering support as they each face their own unique challenges and triumphs.

American Red Cross Urges Households to Prepare for Emergencies

0

REd CrossDeveloping an Emergency Plan is the First Step

HOOVER, Ala., September 2, 2013 — Disasters can strike quickly and often without warning. During National Preparedness Month, the American Red Cross, Alabama Region, encourages all households to get ready for the next emergency or disaster.

“Having a game plan in place is essential for all households so everyone knows what they should do when an emergency occurs,” said Chris Osborne, Communications Officer for the Alabama Red Cross. “National Preparedness Month is a perfect time for Alabama residents to create or update their plan.”

Regions Bank Preparedness Rally
On September 3, the Alabama Red Cross will participate in the Regions Bank Preparedness Rally to help attendees develop their Family Disaster Plan, receive preparedness tips and learn more about preparedness in the community. The event will take place at Regions Bank located at 1900 5th Avenue North in downtown Birmingham from 11:30am to 1:00pm.

MAKE A PLAN It is important that everyone in the household helps put the emergency plan together and knows what they should do if something occurs. Household members may not be together when a disaster happens – during the day many people are at work and school. The plan should include ways to contact one another and two predetermined places to meet – one near the home in case of a sudden emergency like a fire, and one outside the neighborhood in case circumstances prevent people from returning home. People should also identify an emergency contact person from outside the area in case local telephone lines are overloaded or out of service.

Any emergency plan should also include decisions about where family members will go if ordered to evacuate and what route they will take to get there. It’s a good idea to include alternate routes in case roads are closed. If pets are part of the household, make sure to include plans for them such as pet-friendly hotels and animal shelters along the evacuation route.

RED CROSS APPS The Red Cross has free mobile apps that provide information on what to do before, during and after emergencies including developing an emergency plan. “People can use the ‘Make a Plan’ feature in the apps to create their plan and then share it with their loved ones,” Osborne said. “The preloaded content in the apps gives people access to vital information to use during emergencies, even if they can’t connect to the internet.” The apps can be downloaded from the Apple App Store and the Google Play Store for Android by searching for American Red Cross.

OTHER WAYS TO GET READY Another step to get one’s household ready is to build an emergency kit in a container that is easy to carry so the family can use it at home or take it with them if asked to evacuate. It should contain a three-day supply of water (one gallon, per person, per day), nonperishable food, a flashlight, battery-powered or hand-crank radio, extra batteries, a first aid kit, a 7-day supply of medications, a multi-purpose tool, sanitation and personal hygiene items and copies of important personal documents. The Red Cross also recommends having at least two weeks worth of emergency supplies at home.

Everyone also needs to stay informed about what types of disasters are most likely to occur where they live or where they plan to visit. It is also important to take a First Aid and CPR/AED course—a vital component of disaster preparedness in case emergency help is delayed.

For more information on how to prepare for emergencies, people can visit redcross.org/prepare.

Another way people can help ensure their community is ready for a disaster is to give blood. When an emergency occurs, it is the blood already on the shelves that is available to help patients who need it. Thousands of blood donations are needed every day for patients who need blood to help in their battle back to health. If someone would like to give blood, they must be at least 17 years of age, meet weight and height requirements and be in general good health. Donors should bring their Red Cross blood donor card or other form of positive ID with them. Some states allow 16-year-olds to give with parental consent.

DRAMA: Mathew Knowles’ Baby Mama Says He’s Not Providing Child Support

Alexsandra Wright has released the following statement regarding the status of her child support hearing against Beyonce’s father, Mathew Knowles.
A paternity test proved that their 3-year-old son Nixon Alexander Knowles, born in February 2010, was indeed the result of their affair, which led Tina Knowles to file for divorce in November 2009, ending their 31-year marriage.
At the time, Wright told Star Magazine: “We had an 18-month relationship. We were in love and even lived together. But four months into my pregnancy, he decided he couldn’t do it – and since our son’s birth, he has tried to deny Nixon full child support. This isn’t about the money. It’s about accountability, education and providing Nixon a secure life.”
On Wednesday (Aug. 28), Wright released the following update regarding her attempt to collect from Knowles:
“It is with a heavy heart we must head back to Superior Court to continue the fight for the rights of my son Nixon Knowles, who has proven to be Mathew Knowles’ biological son. My family and I have exhausted every non-legal avenue to urge Mathew to be a responsible father and to follow the stipulated judgment we reached together, which was approved by California’s Superior Court. The official judgment was filed and dated September 10, 2010. Every detail was covered and agreed to by Mr. Knowles after a year of private negotiation.
“We have attempted to appeal to him and his team to adhere to that agreement and the court’s stipulated judgment in regard to our son’s education, outstanding medical expenses and other issues, with the hopes of keeping this situation private, considering all parties involved. Unfortunately, we have been unsuccessful with any sort of private negotiation.
“I am deeply saddened that our personal business is being aired in such a public forum. As a result of false statements made by sources very close to our situation, rumors and innuendos are openly being spread about my son and me. Naturally the negative words affect both of our families, children and careers. Therefore, I find it unavoidable to remain silent. Those close to me know that my primary concern is my son Nixon’s welfare and well-being; both now and in the future. I feel that it is important for him to know, when he comes of age, that he wasn’t a mistake and that he was a product of love!
“In the beginning, Mathew and I had a working relationship that encompassed mutual respect and professional admiration. When I met him I already had a very successful and financially viable professional career. He positioned himself as a mentor to me and someone that I could turn to for business advice. As time passed, our relationship turned into a very close personal one. I never wanted or intended to hurt anyone in the process. I regret the pain that I have contributed to his family and to my own family. I have the utmost respect and admiration for both of his daughters – they are both lovely women. I also regret the pain that this situation has caused his ex-wife, Tina, and very much wish one day I will get the opportunity to tell her personally.
“My son, my family, and I thank you for your prayers and hope you will understand our need for whatever little privacy we have left during this period. We are extremely appreciative of the family and friends that are standing by us; we are overwhelmed by their generous outpouring of love, concern and support.
“I’m fighting for every single parent and child as I fight for my own.”
