A 4th Quarter Hawks Victory upset the New Orleans Pelicans

0

Jazz vs Hawks

Wednesday night the #AtlantaHawks (9-2) took on the New Orleans Pelicans (2-7) at the Phillips Arena in Atlanta. Fans crowded the Phillips Arena in bus loads to see if the home team could repeat the #HawksMania phenomena that fans witnessed last season.

The Hawks started off the first three quarters very shaky. After fans watched several shots missed, a few turnovers occur, and a questionable defensive line, many fans questioned if the team could regain the momentum to defeat the Pelicans. By half-time, Pelicans fans appeared confident that they were destined to win the game.

Despite being the underdog coming into the game, the New Orleans Pelicans continued to play tough defense the first three quarters; standing toe-to-toe with the Atlanta Hawks.

Gordan Statement

After trailing by nearly 11 points in the 3rd Quarter, Hawks players Jeff TeagueKyle KorverPaul MilsapDennis Schroder, and Thabo Sefolosha turned the heat up in the Phillips Arena as they took no prisoners in the 4th Quarter. As the pep squad began to roar, it seemed as if the team that Atlanta LOVED was back. In a surprising upset, the Hawks remained #TrueToAtlanta by bringing another victory.

In an interview with Paul Newberry of CBS Sports, Pelicans star player, Eric Gordon blamed the loss on being short-handed.

FINAL SCORE Hawks 106 – Pelicans 98

This Sunday the Hawks will take on the Utah Jazz at 6:00pm EST.

AGING MOBSTER ACQUITTED IN 1978 HEIST RETOLD IN ‘GOODFELLAS’

NEW YORK (AP) — An aging mobster who stayed mostly in the shadows for decades by adhering to the Mafia’s strict code of silence was acquitted Thursday of charges he helped plan a legendary 1978 Lufthansa heist retold in the hit film “Goodfellas.”

A federal jury reached the verdict at a Brooklyn racketeering trial where it heard testimony that portrayed 80-year-old Vincent Asaro as a throwback to an era when New York’s five organized crime families comprised a secret society that committed brazen crimes and settled scores with bloodshed.

Asaro, whose father and grandfather were members of the secretive Bonanno crime family, “was born into that life and he fully embraced it,” Assistant U.S. Attorney Alicyn Cooley said in closing arguments. His devotion to the Bonannos “was as permanent as the ‘death before dishonor’ tattoo on his arm,” she added.

The defense accused prosecutors of relying on shady paid cooperators, including Asaro’s cousin Gaspare Valenti. They argued that the witnesses had incentive to frame Asaro to escape lengthy prison terms of their own.

“These are despicable people,” defense lawyer Elizabeth Macedonio said in her closing. “They are accomplished liars.”

At trial, prosecutors described how Asaro rose through the ranks and developed an “unbreakable bond” with the more notorious James “Jimmy the Gent” Burke, the late Lucchese crime family associate who orchestrated the holdup at the Lufthansa cargo terminal at Kennedy Airport. Taking the witness stand last month, Valenti testified that Asaro and Burke killed a suspected informant with a dog chain in 1969 before ordering Valenti to help bury the body.

Valenti also testified that Asaro drafted him for the Lufthansa heist, telling him, “Jimmy Burke has a big score at the airport coming up, and you’re invited to go.”

When he learned about the mountain of $100 bills and jewels taken from a Lufthansa vault, Asaro was “very happy, really euphoric.” Valenti testified. “We thought there was going to be $2 million in cash and there was $6 million.”

In the aftermath, Asaro survived a bloodbath portrayed in “Goodfellas,” with Robert De Niro’s character going ballistic over fellow mobsters’ purchases of flashy cars and furs and, fearing they would attract law enforcement attention, having them whacked. Prosecutors claimed he collected at least $500,000 from the score but had a gambling problem and squandered it away at the racetrack.

Jurors heard recordings made by Valenti on which Asaro complained in a profanity-laced rant, “We never got our right money, what we were supposed to get. … Jimmy kept everything.”

He also was taped lamenting, “I’m the only wise guy left in the neighborhood.”

TRUMP BLASTS ‘WEAK, INEFFECTIVE’ UNIV. OF MISSOURI HEADS, SANDERS WANTS RACISM ADDRESSED

0

Washington (CNN)Some Republicans seeking the White House blasted University of Missouri administrators for resigning in the wake of continued protests, while Democrats said they were standing with students and others looking to address what they say is structural racism.

“I think it’s just disgusting. I think the two people who resigned are weak, ineffective people,” Donald Trump said on Fox News Thursday morning. “When they resigned, they set something in motion that’s going to be a disaster for the next long period of time.”

Trump also called the protestors’ demands for change “crazy.”

“Many of those things are like crazy,” he said.

Missouri’s president and chancellor both resigned Tuesday, not long after the university’s football players joined in the protests. The protests are over decades of complaints, but took shape after the student government president took to Facebook in September to complain about bigotry and racial slurs.

Republican Ben Carson, the only black candidate in the 2016 race, said the resignations are a sign of the “politically correct police” going too far.

“It’s OK to disagree with people, but it’s not OK to destroy them,” Carson said Thursday on Fox News. “People are so frightened of the politically correct police that they are willing to do things that are irrational in order to appease them. I believe it’s going to be necessary for those people who truly believe in our system, who believe in our Constitution, who believe in our principles and values that made America great, to be willing to stand up.”

But Democratic presidential candidates took sides with the students protesting racism on campus at the University of Missouri.

“I’m listening to the #BlackOnCampus conversation. It’s time to address structural racism on college campuses,” Sanders tweeted.

Hillary Clinton retweeted her staffer Marlon Marshall, who wrote, “Racism has no place anywhere, let alone an institution of learning. Standing w/ the students at Mizzou in my home state calling for change.”

ONE MAN’S OPINION By: Jesse J. Lewis, Sr.

0
Dr. Jesse Lewis, Sr. is the founder of The Birmingham Times.

Politicians are a Different Breed!

If you do not want to be arrested while driving when drinking or intoxicated, then don’t drive or don’t drink.  One…or the other.

I have consistently mentioned to people that my grandmother who reared seven children reared me. I was the oldest of the seven children. I dropped out of high school and entered the armed services at 16 years of age.

If I were running for the President of the United State, don’t you know that the media would attempt to find the other six children, for the sole purpose of asking them how well did I take care of them. The other question would be how did you get into the service at 16.

This is something that I wrote and they are legitimate questions for the press to research.

The press would like to know how did some 16-year-old get to go to the service. My grandmother who made $2.50 a week quit that job and started making pies. She would not take or receive assistance from the government.

When I was born in Northport, Alabama in 1925, Black people did not have hospitals, just midwives who could not write or spell.  When I went into the service, they did not ask for anything.  They wanted your name and age then sent you off to fight the next week.  They did not ask anything, whether you had a criminal record or had been in jail – they cared less.

Dr. Ben Carson has a proven record of being an excellent doctor.  That does not qualify him to be President of the United States.

Michael Jordan in all probability will go down in history as being one of the top basketball players that ever lived.  He would also go down in history as being the top ten worst baseball players that every lived.  In other words, being good in one thing does not make you good at another.

By the same token, President Barack Obama is a terrible golfer.  I do believe that history will say that he was a great President.

Donald Trump said recently that he remains alarmed by Ben Carson’s claims of having a violent temper as a youth, but the real estate mogul said he doesn’t know if his Republican presidential rival has been dishonest.  Trump stood by his assertion that media made scrutiny of Carson’s accounts of his past is the beginning of his campaign’s end.  Trump also implied that Carson’s story about attempting to stab someone in his youth – only to have his knife broken when he hit a large belt buckle – was hard to believe.  He said Carson’s description of his childhood temper as ‘pathological’ is disturbing. He stated, “It’s a serious statement when you say you have a pathological disease, because if I understand it, you can’t easily cure it.”

Trump also cited Carson’s belief that the pyramids were built to store grain as another reason to question his judgment.

He even took a shot at Carson over ‘Saturday Night Live,’ which Trump hosted.  Carson has said he wouldn’t appear on the show, as the presidency is a ‘very serious thing.”  Trump said that he would have done it if they asked him.  You have to actually be asked and it is not easy to be asked.

These recent sayings by Ben Carson might be the kind of temporary run of bad luck that can happen to anybody. Or they might signal a more fundamental problem that could sink his campaign.

Eyebrow-raising comments have been streaming from the retired neurosurgeon.  He even told a CBS News reporter that the world is near the end of days, an apocalyptic disaster that would make any presidential policies or actions irrelevant, to say the least, coming from his comments earlier that he believes the universe was literally created over the course of six 24-hour days.

After the massacre at an Oregon community college that killed innocent people, Carson commented that he would not just stand there and let the gunman shoot him.  He said he would say:  “Hey, guys, everybody attack him!  He may shoot me, but he can’t get us all.”

Carson also ruffled feathers during an interview with CNN’s Wolf Blitzer when, in defense of gun ownership, he said, “I think the likelihood of Hitler being able to accomplish his goals would have been greatly diminished if the people had been armed.”

Carson’s view is “historically inaccurate,” said Jonathan Greenblatt, national director of the Anti-Defamation League, explaining that “the small number of personal firearms available to Germany’s Jews in 1938 could in no way have stopped the totalitarian power of the Nazi German state.”

Undeterred, Carson called the ADL’s reading of history “total foolishness.” But the exchange showed just how difficult it is for nonpoliticians to understand and master the nuances of mass communication – not to mention the immense amount of historical, cultural and geopolitical information – needed to successfully campaign for the presidency.

Carson, like Donald Trump and Carly Fiorina, has enjoyed considerable political success in the polls so far simply by being a nonpolitician.  Carson frequently makes a point of emphasizing that he simply speaks his mind, unencumbered by political correctness.

In the first televised Republican debate of the season, Fox News Megyn Kelly ticked off a number of blunders to the candidates, specific to Carson she pointed out: “You’ve suggested that the Baltic States are not a part of NATO, just months ago you were unfamiliar with the major political parties and government in Israel, and domestically, you thought Alan Greenspan had been treasury secretary instead of federal reserve chair. Aren’t these basic mistakes, and don’t they raise legitimate questions about whether you are ready to be president?”

Good question.  Carson’s response was — “the thing that is probably most important is having a brain, and to be able to figure things out and learn things very rapidly” — isn’t a real answer but a promise to study hard and do better.  That, to some conservatives, isn’t good enough.

Neil Stevens of RedState, the conservative website, questioned Carson for serving as a longtime spokesman for a controversial nutritional supplement firm called Mannatech. “I can’t imagine considering anyone promoting this stuff being fit to be President of the United States,” writes Stevens.

Ed Morrissey of HotAir, another conservative website, questioned Carson when he cited the incidence of homosexual prison sex as evidence that sexual orientation is a matter of personal choice rather than a civil right that deserves legal protection. “If Dr. Carson wants to compete at the highest level, he’ll need to either learn the issues a lot better or learn how to parry the obvious media attempts to make him look like a nut from the fringe,” wrote Morrissey.

I’ve said it before; I’ll say it again.  Dr. Carson will not be the nominee for President of the United States of America.

NOW… Explain to me, how in the world could you put something in writing and the press ask you about what you have written, then you say ‘it’s a gotcha question.’

Keeping an Eye on Safety for November 12, 2015

0

By Samuetta Hill Drew

Parking Deck Safety continues to be the focus. As stated last week, it was important to have a two part segment on this topic because of its potential for real and imminent danger. Remember, parking decks (garages) rank 2nd nationally for violent crimes after residential property. They represent a perfect example of “space and opportunity” because they’re vast, open, and mostly secluded spaces filled with excellent opportunities for assailants to hide and attack due to the number of parked vehicles, large pillars, stairs and elevators. Yes, they are convenient spaces but warrant precaution when used. These additional safety tips below should offer more information about how you can possibly protect yourself in parking decks (garages):

Parking Deck Safety Tips Part 2

  1. Awareness at all times is crucial no matter how potentially distracted you may become dealing with your packages, children or your cell phone ringing (call them back only after you’ve gotten safely in your vehicle and driven to a safe location).
  2. Do not talk on your cell phone or Bluetooth device while walking to your vehicle because it is distracting.
  3. Do not text while walking to your vehicle. It too is also detracting.
  4. It’s important to be aware of your surroundings so you can spot potential danger.
  5. Look around for any suspicious persons to make sure you’re not being followed. I’ve experienced this and it’s a very scary and unsettling situation. Remember to remain calm! Immediately turn around and go back into the store so you can report it to security. They should escort you to your vehicle. Scan the area quickly to try to find someone or group, walk toward them and re-enter the store with them.
  6. Try to avoid walking in areas attackers may be hidden like between trucks, vans, SUVs or even cars. Walk toward your vehicle down the visible lanes until you reach your vehicle.
  7. The National Safety Commission recommends you look around as you approach your vehicle to make sure no one is hiding underneath, behind, in front of or crouched in your back seat (if they’ve broken into your car).
  8. Be prepared by having your pepper spray or personal noisemaker in your hand, just in case. Check to make sure pepper spray is allowed in your state.

As we approach our nation’s busiest and biggest shopping season, let’s remember the ole adage “better safe than sorry” is always applicable when you’re Keeping an Eye on Safety.

Gabourey Sidibe’s ‘Empire’ Sex Scene Inspires Hashtag #MyFatSexStory

gaboureysibidelace-660

Gabourey Sidibe’s sex scene on last week’s Empire has inspired women on Twitter to come forward to share accounts of their sexuality on the hashtag #myfatsexstory.
Writer Sesali B. began the hashtag to challenge the narrative of fat women as asexual beings, sassy side characters or the butt of jokes. Instead, she challenged women of all sizes to see themselves as sexy, passionate beings. And to talk about sex openly.

1

On the blog, Feministing, she wrote, “My hope was that sharing personal sex stories from and about fat black women could make more room in the narrative about our sexuality.”

The hashtag immediately became a place of powerful personal stories — some heartbreaking and some hysterical. Check out some of the highlights below.

Sidibe, for her part, was unbothered by all the Twitter talk. She wrote:

I, a plus sized, dark-skinned woman, had a love scene on primetime television. I had the most fun ever filming that scene even though I was nervous. But I felt sexy and beautiful and I felt like I was doing a good job. I’m very proud of the work we all did to make that scene a great opening for the episode. I keep hearing that people are “hating” on it. I’m not sure how anyone could hate on love but that’s okay. You may have your memes. Honestly, I’m at work too busy to check Twitter anyway. #Booked. Hope you enjoy next week’s show!

What do you think? Don’t big girls need love, too?  Share your thoughts (or stories!) in the comments below.
