It’s a sad but all-too common story – a promising teenager’s life is derailed by a teen pregnancy. With the grim statistics on teen single mothers and how many of them are mired in poverty, it might be hard to see anything positive in the situation.

But Chicago teenager Trameka Pope decided she was not going to be a tragic statistic. Now a high-school senior, Pope has been admitted to 26 colleges and his her high school’s valedictorian, receiving over $80,000 in scholarships.

MyFoxChicago reports:

“I was told that God don’t make mistakes and he wouldn’t give anyone a child who wasn’t ready for one,” Pope said.

In two weeks, she will graduate from Chicago’s Wendell Phillips High School in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

In two weeks, she will graduate from Chicago’s Wendell Phillips High School in the Bronzeville neighborhood.

Pope delivered her baby girl the summer after her 8th grade year.

She and her family have been homeless, but she’s never lost hope or her drive to become great.

“I always said that I wanted to make change and I wanted to be in the history books, and I started with myself,” she told FOX 32.

Pope starts her school day by taking college prep courses at Kennedy-King College. She is taking four classes at Phillips High School, including AP Calculus.

After school, when Pope isn’t cheerleading at a basketball or football game, she works at a local grocery store. She is also a member of the National Honor Society and several other extra curricular groups.

They say it takes a village to raise a child. In this case, it was Chicago Public Schools’ staff who took Pope on college tours.

School counselors also helped her apply for scholarships, as well as a unique non-profit called ‘SGA Youth and Family Services.’ The organization prepares teens to be parents.

Dawn Jackson is Pope’s social worker.

“Everyone loves her. She’s a people person. She has a sweet heart and kind spirit,” Jackson said.

One in four CPS students drop out of high school.

But not Pope.

“I didn’t give up. I pushed myself hard. And my baby motivated me every day because I wanted to provide for her and I also didn’t want to be a statistic,” she said.

Pope is heading to Western Illinois University this fall on her way to eventually earning a Ph.D. in Social Work.

AG ANNOUNCES ARREST OF MOBILE DENTIST FOR MEDICAID FRAUD

AG ANNOUNCES ARREST OF MOBILE DENTIST FOR MEDICAID FRAUD

(MONTGOMERY)— Attorney General Luther Strange announced the arrest of a Mobile dentist, William Gerard Eastburn, on one count of filing false claims with the Alabama Medicaid Agency and one count of first-degree theft of property.

The Attorney General’s Medicaid Fraud Control Unit presented evidence to the May 2015 term of the Montgomery County grand jury, resulting in an indictment* dated May 15 charging Eastburn with Medicaid fraud and theft of property.  The allegations stem from a series of procedures that Eastburn either did not perform or performed under false pretenses.

The procedure at issue, an indirect pulp cap, requires certain prerequisites in order to be covered by the Alabama Medicaid Agency.  It is alleged that on numerous occasions East burn performed these procedures without the required prerequisites being present and that he fabricated the need for such procedures. It also is alleged that on numerous occasions the procedure was not performed at all, but that the Medicaid Agency still was billed.   Medicaid fraud is an unclassified felony with a maximum possible prison sentence of five years.  Theft of property in the first degree is a class B felony, which carries a possible prison sentence of two to 20 years imprisonment.

Attorney General Strange commended his Medicaid Fraud Control Unit for its steadfast investigation of this case, as well as the Alabama Medicaid Agency’s Program Integrity Unit, which referred the case for investigation and prosecution.

*An indictment is merely an accusation.  The defendant is presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty.

Suicide: The Only Question That Matters

0
Suicide: The Only Question That Matters
by Thomas L. Knapp
A Dakota County, Minnesota jury voted on May 14 to convict Final Exit Network of helping Doreen Dunn take her own life in 2007.
If the prosecution’s claims are true, Dunn, who suffered from chronic pain, sought Final Exit’s assistance in ending her life; two of the group’s members sat with her as she killed herself by inhaling helium;  they then removed the equipment from the scene so that it would look like she died of natural causes (presumably so that they would not be charged with the crime of “assisting a suicide”).
One of those who sat with Dunn was granted immunity to testify against Final Exit Network. The other has since died, leaving the organization as sole defendant, subject to fines of $33,000.
The conviction reaffirms a disturbing implicit property claim: The claim that the state owned Doreen Dunn’s life, and that it owns yours as well. It would have been more honest to charge Final Exit with “stealing government property.”
Do you own yourself, or does the state own you? With respect to suicide, this is the only question that matters.
To continue living, or not to do so, is the most basic, primal decision each of us makes every minute of every day of our lives.
If you own yourself, then by definition the decision to continue living or to end your life — for any reason, at any time, with or without the assistance of others, in any manner that doesn’t violate others’ rights — is yours alone to make.
Anyone claiming a right to take that decision out of your hands is by definition claiming ownership of your life. But that would amount to slavery, an institution formally abolished in 1865 with the 13th Amendment.
Some try to dodge the baldness of their ownership claim by imputing it to God, with themselves as mere enforcers. But in America, it’s not the state’s job to inflict the religious beliefs of some on unconsenting others.
Some argue a “slippery slope”: Legal assisted suicide, they say,  will be faked to conceal murders. But that gets it exactly backward. If suicide is legal it can be chosen openly in advance (perhaps with sworn affidavits), making it harder rather than easier to fake.
It’s time and past time we required legislators, and implored juries, to recognize the ownership of each individual over his or her life — and death.

Eternal Questions

Eternal Questions

Bobby E. Mills, PhD

Since  time  immemorial  human  beings  have  asked  certain  eternal  questions;  especially questions concerning the existence of God, and what is ultimately expected of human being sin life. That is, every individual must draw a circle around self in order to understand life, because every individual must come to know God for himself.

As a flawed “graveyard traveling” human being with many fallibilities, I  was born in the South to a family with meager economic resources. Yet, by the grace of almighty God, I was the second “Black” individual to obtain a “PhD” degree in the field of sociology from Syracuse University. In my parents’ home and my grandparents’ homes it was always taught: “In this family, we will serve the LORD”. And, of course, I was glad when they said unto me “let us go into the House of the Lord”. For without a doubt, my life experiences have unequivocally taught me to know that: there is a God!

Listed below are some eternal questions that human beings have asked from the beginning of time:

 Is there a God?

 What is the meaning of life?

 Is there predestination?

 Is there life-after-death?

Even  with  my  limited spiritual  knowledge,  and  understanding  of  God,  these  are  eternal questions that no individual can absolutely ever know, and of course,  we do not need to absolutely  know.  If  an  individual  did  know the  absolute  answer  to  these questions  then he/she would be as “GOD”. If we did, we would be God. Individuals can only know in part, because faith must be the cornerstone of our knowing and understanding. “But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.” (Hebrews 11:6). The earthly connection between our faith and spiritual understanding is through “reading” the Holy Bible: “But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. To him be glory both now and forever. Amen.”(2 Peter3:18).

Human social behavioral patterns are conditioned by family structures, institutional churches, and  educational  institutions  with  many  “strange  and  secular  contestable  variables”  in-between. Of course, the unpredictable circumstances of human nature make life no crystal-stair; there are thorns and thistles everywhere.

Our educational and religious institutions ought to work together reinforcing; enhancing and edifying human thought processes that is  “go together like hand and glove.” In too many instances pastoral leaders declare that an educated individual and spirituality do not integrate well in “any” social-spiritual-institutional-environments. (Reason being many pastoral leaders themselves  are  not  educated  in  the  Biblical  procedures  of  church  polity).  “So  then  faith cometh  by  hearing,  and  hearing  by  the  word  of  God.”  (Romans  10:17).  This  scripture  is precisely why education and Christianity go hand and hand: “Blessed is he that readeth…”(Revelation 1: 3).  Allow me to paraphrase: “Hide God’s word in the heart of your mind in order that you might not sin against God.” (Psalms 119: 11).

Question: how do we achieve Jesus’ declaration that earth and heaven can be on one accord, when we do the “Will of God”. Obviously, the only way earth and heaven can become one is by “hearing the Word of God, reading the Bible with spiritual clarity, and growing in grace and the  knowledge  of  our  Lord  and  Savior  Jesus  Christ”.  And,  of  course,  individuals  must spiritually desire understanding of this scripture:  “Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.” (John 17:17).

God says he knew you before you were conceived in your mother’s womb (your Garden of Eden), but that’s God. With human beings, life begins in the family structure between a man and a woman (married or un-married), not same-sex.  Society begins in the family context.

All Americans must clearly understand this scripture. “For God is not the author of confusion, but of peace, as in all churches of the saints.” (1 Corinthians 14:33). Therefore, our earthly question is: how do we live in peace and harmony both spiritually and materially within our three basic institutions: family, church and education?

What will help Americans learn how to effectively deal with eternal questions is enumerated below:

 American  family  units  must  re-orient  themselves  toward  spiritualism  rather  than materialism,  because  family  is  a  spiritual  unit,  not  an  economic  unit.  Money  and income does not satisfy “lovers of money”, but there is great gain in godliness with spiritual contentment. Individuals who love money will never be satisfied with money.Individuals come into the world with nothing, and your “family” will not allow you to take anything out.

 Institutional Christianity (local-churches) must foster stewardship (train and develop)godly pastoral leaders rather than promote celebrity-style-worldly-preacher-vanity.

 Educational institutions must foster creative learning processes by teaching individual show to spiritually think, not how to obtain a degree without having spiritual-common-sense.

God desires that all individuals come to a spiritual understanding in life; whereby they can say unequivocally:  yes LORD, “not my will,  but  thine will  be done.”  I  have not “thoroughly”answered these eternal questions;  not even for myself,  but I  trust that I  have shed  some spiritual light on these eternal questions in the context of being an earthly dweller with a heavenly mind. Lest we forget: “God judgeth the righteous, and God is angry with the wicked every day.” (Psalms 7:11). To be sure, individuals cannot throw bricks and at the same time hide their hands, because your sins will find you out. Selah!

Birmingham Teen In Need of Life-Saving Transplant

Birmingham, Alabama — With the cost of a transplant often exceeding $500,000, many transplant families are unable to shoulder the financial burden of such a procedure.  The Children’s Organ Transplant Association (COTA) is a national charity dedicated to organizing and guiding communities in raising funds for transplant-related expenses.  In Birmingham, volunteers are raising funds for COTA in honor of transplant patients like local teen, Sadie Chapman.
Sadie is the daughter of Bernadette and Gary Chapman.  Born on May 29, 1996, Sadie was diagnosed with Hypoplastic Left Ventricle.  The doctors at Children’s Hospital of Alabama in Birmingham have recommended a life-saving heart transplant.  An estimated $100,000 is being raised by Birmingham volunteers.
Volunteers are needed to assist with fundraising activities that will help with transplant-related expenses.  Individuals and groups interested in more information can contact Community Coordinator Jay McKinney at 205.531.6132 or jmckinney@baysidebiz.com Media representatives may contact the campaign Public Relations Coordinator Sue Johnson at 205.482.0119 orsjohnson@bbbsbhm.org for more information about the family or the COTA community fundraising campaign.
Donations may be mailed to the Children’s Organ Transplant Association, 2501 West COTA Drive, Bloomington, Indiana, 47403.  Checks or money orders should be made payable to COTA, with “In Honor of Sadie C.” written on the memo line of the check.  Secure credit card donations are also accepted online at www.COTAforSadieC.com.
Sadie’s family has asked for assistance from the Children’s Organ Transplant Association.  The organization’s priority is to assure that no child or young adult is denied a transplant or excluded from a transplant waiting list due to lack of funds.  One hundred percent of all funds raised are used for patients’ transplant-related expenses.

Vendor Who Bribed Two-Year College Chancellor Resentenced to Three Years in Prison

BIRMINGHAM — A federal judge today sentenced a computer software vendor to three years in prison for paying more than $600,000 in bribes between 2002 and 2006 to the then chancellor of Alabama’s two-year college system, announced U.S. Attorney Joyce White Vance and Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation Special Agent in Charge Veronica Hyman-Pillot.

U.S. District Judge Virginia Emerson Hopkins sentenced JAMES WINSTON HAYES, 71, to prison and again ordered he pay $628,454 in restitution and forfeit $5 million. The judge originally sentenced Hayes to probation in 2011. Today’s resentencing was the result of a November ruling by the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit, which vacated the judge’s earlier sentence. The government challenged the probationary sentence on appeal and the 11th Circuit ruled that a sentence of probation was unreasonable for Hayes’ crime.

“Mr. Hayes received millions of taxpayer dollars by bribing the chancellor of Alabama’s two-year college system to ensure the defendant’s company received contracts from colleges within the system,” Vance said. “Through fraudulent contracts and fake invoices, he even had taxpayers financing his bribe payments,” she said. “Imprisonment is a necessary and just punishment for his crimes.”

“Today’s sentence of James Hayes emphasizes the government’s relentless effort to hold an individual accountable for his criminal behavior,” Hyman-Pillot said. “Mr. Hayes used financial bribes to influence contracts with the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. The overall conspiracy was fueled by greed and deceit. I hope this sends a clear message that Internal Revenue Service-Criminal Investigation will continue to trace every penny used in kickback schemes to expose all individuals who engage in bribery and corruption,” she said.

Hayes formerly owned ACCESS Group Software, a Walker County company that sold educational computer software to the Alabama Department of Postsecondary Education. ACCESS did business with more than 25 two-year colleges and technical schools in Alabama. Hayes pleaded guilty in 2008 to bribing Roy Johnson, then chancellor of the two-year college system, and to conspiring to commit money laundering.

Over four years, Hayes paid Johnson more than $600,000 in bribes, and in return, Hayes’ software company obtained lucrative government contracts that earned his company more than $14 million in revenue and about $5 million in profit.

Johnson pleaded guilty in the case to charges of bribery, conspiracy to commit bribery, conspiracy to commit money laundering, obstruction of justice and tampering with a witness. Johnson was sentenced to six years and six months in prison. Both Hayes and Johnson assisted the government in its investigation of corruption in the two-year college system after they were charged. Including Hayes and Johnson, the investigation resulted in 17 convictions.

Assistant U.S. Attorney George Martin prosecuted the case and Assistant U.S. Attorney Praveen Krishna handled the case on appeal.
