Identity Theft a Major Concern on the IRS Annual “Dirty Dozen” List of Tax Scams to Avoid

0

IRS The Internal Revenue Service has issued a filing season alert warning taxpayers to watch out for identity theft at tax time, one of the year’s “Dirty Dozen” tax scams. The IRS continues to aggressively pursue the criminals that file fraudulent returns using someone else’s Social Security number.
“We remain dedicated to stopping tax-related identity theft and protecting taxpayers, and we are making important progress on that front. Taxpayers still need to be extremely careful and do everything they can to avoid becoming a victim,” said IRS Commissioner John Koskinen.
The Dirty Dozen is compiled annually by the IRS and lists a variety of common scams taxpayers may encounter any time during the year. Many of these con games peak during filing season as people prepare their tax returns or hire someone to do so.
“Scams can be sophisticated and take many forms. We urge people to protect themselves and use caution when viewing e-mails, receiving telephone calls or getting advice on tax issues,” Koskinen said. “Keep your personal information safe and secure. Taxpayers should protect their computers and only give out their Social Security numbers when absolutely necessary.”
Tax-related identity theft occurs when someone uses your stolen Social Security number to file a tax return claiming a fraudulent refund. While the IRS has made significant strides over the past several years to address this issue, it remains a top concern for the IRS, which is why identity theft remains on the Dirty Dozen again list this year as the IRS works to protect taxpayers and help victims.
As a result of these aggressive efforts to combat identity theft from 2011 through October 2014, the IRS has stopped 19 million suspicious returns and protected over $63 billion in fraudulent refunds.
For 2015, the IRS will continue to increase both the number and efficiency of the identity theft data models and filters that are used to identify potentially fraudulent returns. These pre-refund filters stop the vast majority of fraudulent returns. Additionally, the IRS continues to expand its partnerships with financial institutions to identity and stop fraudulent refunds.
IRS Criminal Investigation continues its robust efforts, and in Fiscal Year 2014, the IRS initiated 1,063 identity theft-related investigations. Criminal Investigation enforcement efforts resulted in 748 sentencings as compared to 438 in FY 2013, an increase of 75 percent. Our incarceration rate rose to 87.7 percent as compared to 80.6 percent in FY 2013. The courts imposed significant jail time with the average months to serve in FY 2014 at 43 months as compared to 38 months in FY 2013 with the longest sentencing being 27 years.
Fighting identity theft is an ongoing battle as identity thieves continue to create new ways of stealing personal information and using it for their gain.
Identity theft cases are among the most complex handled by the IRS. The IRS is continually reviewing processes and policies to minimize the incidence of identity theft and to help those who find themselves victimized. The IRS is working hard to streamline its internal process, but more work remains.
In an effort to help victims, the IRS has issued approximately 1.5 million Identity Protection PINs (IP PINs.) The IP PIN is a unique, six-digit number that is assigned annually to victims of identity theft with resolved cases for use when filing their federal tax return. The IP PIN will allow these individuals to avoid delays in filing returns and receiving refunds.
This year, the IRS will continue its IP PIN pilot program that allows taxpayers who filed tax returns last year from Florida, Georgia or the District of Columbia to opt into the IP PIN program.
Additionally, the IRS is offering approximately 1.7 million taxpayers the opportunity to opt in to the IP PIN program in instances where the IRS has identified indications of identity theft on their accounts.
The IRS understands that identity theft is a frustrating, complex process for victims. While identity thieves steal information from sources outside the tax system, the IRS is often the first to inform a victim that identity theft has occurred. The IRS is working hard to resolve identity theft cases as quickly as possible.
The IRS offers the following tips as ways to protect you from becoming a victim of identity theft:

·         Don’t carry your Social Security card or any documents that include your Social Security number (SSN) or Individual Taxpayer Identification Number (ITIN).
·         Don’t give a business your SSN or ITIN just because they ask. Give it only when required.
·         Protect your financial information.
·         Check your credit report every 12 months.
·         Review your Social Security Administration earnings statement annually.
·         Secure personal information in your home.
·         Protect your personal computers by using firewalls and anti-spam/virus software, updating security patches and changing passwords for Internet accounts.
·         Don’t give personal information over the phone, through the mail or on the Internet unless you have initiated the contact or you are sure you know who you are dealing with.

(NAPSA) – Whether you’re welcoming last-minute guests in from the cold at Christmas, ringing in the New Year, or gathering round the grill to watch the fireworks on July 4th, here’s a hint from Registered Dietitian and lifestyle expert Erin Palinski-Wade on how to have a successful holiday party in nearly no time, at any time of the year:
“Be sure to stock your freezer with convenient and delicious options like Matlaw’s Stuffed Clams, that won’t leave you stuck in the kitchen while your guests are celebrating in the other room.”
An excellent party finger food, the Stuffed Clams come elegantly served in a natural clam shell and in a variety of delicious flavors including Bacon and Cheese, Chili Lime, Chorizo, and classic New England Style.
They’re even easy to prepare. Simply place on a baking sheet into a preheated 450° oven and cook for 30 minutes; or wrap clams in a foil pouch – leave it open for a crispy top or closed for softer, moister clams – place on the grill preheated to medium and heat until hot throughout. Serve with butter, lemon and hot sauce and let the party begin.

Keeping an Eye on Safety

The United Negro College Fund (UNCF) organization created a very memorable impactful slogan several years ago. The slogan “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste” has been used successfully as a branding tool to market the organization’s fundraising efforts which aid students attending Historically Black Colleges/Universities (HBCU).  This slogan has been successful for many reasons with one of them being its truthfulness. The truthfulness of this slogan came to my mind immediately when I heard of one of the latest schemes thieves are now using to invade people’s homes when occupied.

Home Invasion Scheme:  The scheme involves a woman approaching your home and ringing the doorbell during the day typically when older people are at home. Once someone answers the door, she tells them in a pitiful voice that she has just been put out of her home by her husband and needs a ride to a relative’s home. Note her accomplice is hiding close to the home’s entrance often in the shrubbery. The thieves have thought up at least three different angles based upon the homeowner’s reactions to the woman’s story.
a.    Angle One – If the homeowner opens the door to let the woman into their home, her accomplice will quickly rush and shove their way into the home. Attempting to use the element of surprise and brute force to overwhelm the homeowner and invade their home.
b.    Angle Two – If the homeowner doesn’t open their house door or opens the house door but, keeps their security door locked, if applicable, and tells the woman they are not going to assist her, the woman will then proceed to fall down in the homeowner’s yard yelling and screaming because she supposedly is so upset. The thieves hope the homeowner will open the door and come to her aid. This will allow her partner that’s hiding, an opportunity to invade the home.
c.    Angle Three – If the homeowner does not open the door, the thieves begin to look around the home for vulnerable areas which will allow them to gain entry.

Safety Tip:  1). Continue to be careful and don’t be caught off guard.  2). Never allow anyone you don’t know to enter your home regardless of their excuse. 3). Remember if someone comes to your home and tries this or other schemes, contact the police immediately. Allow the police to handle the matter.  4). Please share this scheme with your neighbors, friends and relatives especially the elderly ones. Remember knowledge is power.  *This scheme was recently tried unsuccessfully on a young couple who happened to be at home.
Sadly, this scheme, as well as many others, involves a great deal of thought by individuals. It requires them to think of a scenario on how they can steal from honest individuals who don’t mind using their time, energy and minds to work for what they need and want. Again the UNCF slogan is truthful, “a mind is a terrible thing to waste” and because of scheming individuals like these who waste their time, energy and minds we must remain safety fit by Keeping an Eye on Safety.

Power to Forgive Sins

And, behold, men brought in a bed a man which was taken with a palsy: and they sought means to bring him in, and to lay him before him.
And when they could not find by what way they might bring him in because of the multitude, they went upon the housetop, and let him down through the tiling with his couch into the midst before Jesus.
And when he saw their faith, he said unto him, Man, thy sins are forgiven thee.
And the scribes and the Pharisees began to reason, saying, Who is this which speaketh blasphemies? Who can forgive sins, but God alone?
But when Jesus perceived their thoughts, he answering said unto them, What reason ye in your hearts?
Whether is easier, to say, Thy sins be forgiven thee; or to say, Rise up and walk?
But that ye may know that the Son of man hath power upon earth to forgive sins, (he said unto the sick of the palsy,) I say unto thee, Arise, and take up thy couch, and go into thine house.
And immediately he rose up before them, and took up that whereon he lay, and departed to his own house, glorifying God.
And they were all amazed, and they glorified God, and were filled with fear, saying, We have seen strange things to day.
And after these things he went forth, and saw a publican, named Levi, sitting at the receipt of custom: and he said unto him, Follow me.
And he left all, rose up, and followed him.
And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
But their scribes and Pharisees murmured against his disciples, saying, Why do ye eat and drink with publicans and sinners?
And Jesus answering said unto them, They that are whole need not a physician; but they that are sick.
I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
And they said unto him, Why do the disciples of John fast often, and make prayers, and likewise the disciples of the Pharisees; but thine eat and drink?
And he said unto them, Can ye make the children of the bridechamber fast, while the bridegroom is with them?
But the days will come, when the bridegroom shall be taken away from them, and then shall they fast in those days.
And he spake also a parable unto them; No man putteth a piece of a new garment upon an old; if otherwise, then both the new maketh a rent, and the piece that was taken out of the new agreeth not with the old.
And no man putteth new wine into old bottles; else the new wine will burst the bottles, and be spilled, and the bottles shall perish.
But new wine must be put into new bottles; and both are preserved.
No man also having drunk old wine straightway desireth new: for he saith, The old is better.

A Quest to Know God

HEIR
You may be thinking, how am I an heir, and if you are thinking that, and you are thinking earthly, well, do you not know you are an heir to the Kingdom of God. [James 2:5]. What is the Kingdom of God, you asked? Well now, Jesus is the Kingdom of God. The Kingdom is where the King rules and reigns, and has complete dominion. Now, does He rule in your heart? If your answer is ‘no’, please allow me to tell you how to allow Him to reign in you. I feel certain you want Him to reign in your ’heart’, because you do want to be His Heir, do you not?
We, who have accepted the price Jesus paid for our sins on His cross, have qualified to be an heir. All who make Jesus their personal Saviour, will have a share in God’s Heavenly Kingdom, which is each one’s inheritance through His Son [Colossians 1:12-13]. You must allow Him to rule in your heart now, in fact each day, as you have been told by Jesus in Luke 9:23. Jesus said, “He who will take up his cross, and follows me daily”, now if you follow Him daily, He is truly reigning in your heart, which qualifies you to have your part in the Heavenly Kingdom. How wonderful, how magnificent, how glorious it is to know you have an inheritance and you are in it now, and will fully obtain it in your eternal life with Jesus.
You should always be mindful that you are sanctified, which means set apart. Being set apart requires no participating in living a life like the world. Born again believers desire should always be to please the Lord, because He paid the price for all your sins. Jesus was born to die for you. Otherwise, you would be your enemy’s property to burn ‘you’ in hell’s fire forever.
