Hueytown’s Jameis Winston Declares for NFL Draft

According to Associated Press  Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston  and Hueytown native announced that he is going to the NFL .The 2013 Heisman Trophy winner announced his decision to forgo his final two years of eligibility and enter the 2015 draft in a statement released to ESPN by The Legacy Agency on Wednesday.
Winston was the most successful quarterback in college football during the last two seasons, but also faced lengthy sexual assault investigations. He was not charged by police and was cleared by the university.
The Seminoles went 26-1 with Winston starting and won the 2014 national championship.
“I reached this very difficult decision after careful consideration and long thought, realizing how difficult it would be to say goodbye to my family at Florida State,” Winston said. “I will always take pride in leading our team back to national prominence and am confident that my returning teammates will continue the success for many years to come.”

Winston set the national freshman record with 40 touchdown passes while throwing for 4,057 yards and 10 interceptions en route to winning the title. His numbers dropped in 2013 after losing his top two running backs, two starting receivers and his starting center. Winston threw for 3,907 yards with 25 touchdowns and 18 interceptions in 2014.
Winston is expected to be one of the first quarterbacks selected.
NFL Media senior analyst Gil Brandt said NFL teams will find out everything they need to know about Winston’s background from league security. Brandt helped build the Super Bowl-winning Dallas Cowboys as vice president of player personnel from 1960-89.
“Initially, he’s going to get a grade and it’s going to be very good because he is a good player,” Brandt said. “They’ll look at the Notre Dame game and see all the unusual blitzes that they brought against him and what he did. They’ll look at the Louisville game where he threw three interceptions and knocks the ball loose from the interceptor and throws a touchdown pass the next play.
“The way he’s played this year is unbelievable with all of the problems that he’s faced and all the adjustments he’s had to make to practice times and to do all the things that he has to do to defend himself, give depositions, appear in court before the student body, all of those things.”
A state attorney declined to press sexual assault charges against Winston in December 2013. The university cleared him last month.
Winston was suspended three baseball games for the theft of crab legs from a Tallahassee, Florida, grocery store during the spring of 2014. He was also suspended from the Clemson football game in September after the quarterback made “offensive and vulgar” comments about female anatomy on campus.
Coach Jimbo Fisher supported Winston throughout.
“I would like to wish Jameis nothing but success at the next level as I think he’ll be extremely successful,” Fisher said in a statement Wednesday.
”It was a blessing to be able to coach him. He’s one of the unique players that I’ve ever had the privilege to coach. He embodies what you as a coach want as a person, a student and a player. He’s a genuine and honest guy. He’s one of the greatest players in Florida State history.”

Energy-efficiency and Safety Tips
for Cold Weather from Alabama Power

0

logo_alabamapowerNew e-book helps customers get winter ready

During hard freezes across large sections of Alabama with temperatures dropping into single digits and wind chills making it feel even colder, Alabama Power offers some tips to help customers keep warm and safe.

Here are some tips on how you can stay warm while saving energy:
·         If you use portable electric heaters, use them only in small areas. Buy models that are thermostatically controlled. Place these in well-ventilated areas away from flammable objects.
·         Use an electric blanket at night. An electric blanket is more economical than heating the entire house all night long.
·         Use a small room fan or ceiling fan to circulate and distribute heated air. When reversed, ceiling fans can circulate hot air trapped near the ceiling.
·         Although a crackling fire in the fireplace can make a room appear to be more warm and cozy, fireplaces are often a deterrent to energy efficiency because a lot of the heated air escapes up the chimney. A fireplace designed for providing heat eliminates this problem through a draft which supplies the fire with outside air rather than air from the room.
·         Keep cold wind outside by closing garage doors. Close all louvers and vents in the attic or foundation walls during the winter – but be sure to open them when the weather turns warm.
·         Leave draperies open on sunny days so your house will absorb the sun’s heat. Close them on the shaded side of the house and at night.
·         Make sure heating outlets and return air registers are not blocked by furniture, draperies, doors or other obstacles.
Be sure to check on elderly neighbors to ensure they have adequate heat. Bring all pets indoors until warmer temperatures return.

If you have to be outside during frigid temperatures, consider these important safety precautions:

·         Parts of the body especially vulnerable to the cold include fingers, legs, feet, toes, head, ears, face and nose. Keep them warm by wearing gloves, socks, hats, ear warmers and waterproof gloves and boots.

·         Eat hot meals loaded with carbohydrates to provide fuel that produces heat for the body.
·         While working in the cold, stay physically active and take frequent breaks in a warm, dry place.

Hypothermia and frostbite are caused by overexposure to extremely cold temperatures. Both conditions require immediate medical attention.

Frostbite occurs when flesh freezes. The exposed flesh first appears reddish and then begins to turn grayish-white. Hypothermia occurs when the core body temperature falls below normal. Symptoms of hypothermia include:
·         Shivering
·         Chattering teeth
·         Slurred speech
·         Lack of coordination

If someone shows signs of hypothermia, move the person inside to a warmer temperature. Give him or her a warm drink if they are conscious and seek medical assistance immediately.

Historic Churches from Civil Rights Era in Selma and Birmingham to Hold Service of Reconciliation

St. Paulst_marks_copy

SELMA, Ala. — St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Birmingham and St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Selma will join together on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2015, for a worship service in the spirit of ongoing reconciliation between people of all races in the church, state and country.
This service will also reaffirm St. Paul’s and St. Mark’s commitment to welcome all people in the name of Christ.
Fifty years ago on March 27 when racial tensions were high, the vestry of St. Paul’s reaffirmed to abide by Canon 16, Section 4 of the Canons of the Episcopal Church. The canon declared that no one should be excluded from worship based on “race, color or ethnic origin.”
Previously during March of 1965, members of St. Mark’s parish, a historically Black church, were not permitted to worship at St. Paul’s because leaders of the church identified these members of St. Mark’s as “outside demonstrators.” However, other leaders of St. Paul’s walked out of worship to join those who were excluded. Together on the steps of St. Paul’s, they joined to say together the General Confession before parting ways.
“In the spirit of those who prayed on the steps together, and as is customary on Palm Sunday, we will share in the Blessing of the Palms as well as say together the General Confession in which we will recognize that no one is worthy to enter the household of God except by the grace and merit of Jesus Christ our Savior,” said Jack Alvey, rector of St. Paul’s. “Everyone then will process into the nave, where members of St. Mark’s and St. Paul’s will serve in the leadership of worship. All are welcome to worship our Lord Jesus Christ with us on Palm Sunday.”
As a sign of a continued commitment to work together, members of both parishes will come together and identify ways to promote peace and reconciliation in both churches and communities.
During the season of Lent, which begins on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 18, 2015, St. Paul’s will also host a Lenten Lecture Series entitled “Opening Doors,” as they prepare for this historic worship on Palm Sunday.  The series will take place on Wednesday evenings from 5:30-7 p.m. beginning with soup and salad followed by a speaker.
Five speakers have been confirmed, including the Rev. Doug M. Carpenter, retired priest in Alabama and son of former Episcopal Bishop of Alabama who served during the Civil Rights Era, the Rt. Rev. Charles C.J. Carpenter Sr. (Feb. 25); Mrs. Sharon J. Jackson of Brown Chapel AME in Selma and author of Images of America: Selma (March 4); the Rev. Charles L. Fischer III, rector of St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Atlanta (March 11); the Rev. Candice Frazer of St. John’s Episcopal Church in Montgomery (March 18); and Ms. Ruby Sales, Founder/Director of Spirithouse Project in Atlanta and participant in Selma to Montgomery marches (March 25). All are invited and welcome.

Keeping an Eye on Safety

Samuetta DrewBy Samuetta Hill Drew

Happy Safe New Year!! Can you believe it, we’re now 15 years into the new century and millennium, but some things still remain slow to change. Typically around this time of the year, most of us pledge to get more physically fit for the New Year which I believe is great! I hope everyone achieves their desired physical fitness goals, but, I also want to challenge you to get more fit as it relates to your goals toward your personal and home safety practices, as well. Let’s escalate any needed changes we may have in both areas. As I reminded you last week, they both are directly linked to our basic survival.
“Old Man Winter” usually arrives in our geographical area during the month of January. With this in mind, let’s focus our safety efforts this week on preparation for his arrival. Let us begin by…

1)  Checking the batteries in your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in your home. They should be changed at least once annually. Unfortunately, only one third of Americans have the latter device. If you are not included in this number, please purchase one. Rationale: Many people during extreme cold weather will use space heaters, fireplaces and/or generators/candles (if there is a loss of power). These detectors can help save lives, in case of a fire.
2)  Make sure you have a working flashlight in strategic locations throughout your home. For example, you may wish to have one underneath each bed in your home. If your home has multiple levels, make sure you have one located on each level including your basement. Remember, flashlight batteries should be check regularly also. Make sure you have some extra batteries on hand. Like the old saying goes “it is better to have and not need, than to need and not have. Rationale: Inclement winter weather often includes power outages in our area.
3)  Don’t run your car inside a garage attached to your home. This practice is somewhat common on cold winter days.  Rationale: You place you and your family at risk of carbon monoxide poisoning with this practice.

These are simple practical tips which can be easily implemented.  So, let’s start pumping it up this year and get serious about Keeping an Eye on our Personal and Home Safety.

IT Innovation is Creating Career Opportunities

0

IT Innovators (NAPSI)—Technology is a driving force in today’s economy, powering innovation and creating jobs. The rapid adoption of cloud computing, mobility, social media and other innovations has accelerated the importance of technology in the workplace—and the need for information technology (IT) technicians.
Desktop support has long been one of the most fundamental jobs in all of IT. However, what was once a reactive job—waiting for the phone to ring or an e-mail to arrive summoning you to fix a broken PC—has evolved into a proactive position that’s far more critical to day-to-day business operations.
More Than Maintenance
Technology “maintenance” is much more sophisticated in 2015 than it was 20, 10 or even two years ago. Today, it involves supporting handheld devices (iPads and Androids), rolling out software to thousands of computers and conducting server migrations. Today’s IT technicians get hands-on experience and insight into fast-changing technologies, including cloud computing, cyber security, data analysis, mobility and telecommunications.
There remains in some corners a misperception that the majority of IT support jobs have been shipped overseas. The reality is that in many organizations, there are new, more significant opportunities for technicians. And the IT technician’s role remains the best, first step someone can take to launch a career in technology.
Knowledge Workers
Today’s engineers and technologists are knowledge workers, possessing a unique combination of skills that can’t be easily outsourced or delegated.
With IT departments becoming more closely integrated with other lines of business, the technical knowledge and skills employed by IT technicians are something that can’t be delivered efficiently or effectively over the phone from a call center.
Is It Right For You?
If you have an interest in technology, along with the ability to solve problems and possess strong people skills, you may be a candidate for a career change and step into a job as an IT technician with a minimal amount of training—either in a classroom, online or through self-study.
One way to tell if you have the aptitude is the CompTIA IT Fundamentals certification. This professional credential is available through CompTIA, the nonprofit association for the IT industry. The exam covers five categories: software, hardware, security, networking and basic IT literacy.
Earning a credential from an organization well known and widely respected for its certification program demonstrates to prospective employers that you’re ready to enter the IT workforce. It can also serve as a springboard to more advanced IT skills certifications and set the stage for new career opportunities and advancement.

AAA Defensive Driving Class saves Lives and Money

0

AAA_Logo   An upcoming safe driving course conducted by AAA-Alabama will allow Birmingham area drivers age 55 and older to sharpen their driving safety skills and save money on auto insurance.
This is a great opportunity for mature drivers to refresh their driving knowledge and learn some terrific defensive driving techniques. Alabama law requires auto insurance providers to award a discount to anyone who takes this class, age 55 and older. Typical insurance discounts range between 5 and 10 percent and the certification is valid for three years.
While the class is favored by senior drivers, it’s also a great class for teenagers or other novice drivers. It gives a unique prospective on defensive driving and is open to drivers of all ages. The one-day Safe Driving for Mature Operators class will be held on Thursday, January 8th from 8 a.m. until 5 p.m. at the AAA State Headquarters building at 2400 Acton Road, in Birmingham. The cost is $25 for AAA members and $30 for non-members.  The deadline for registration is Wednesday, January 7th.
“This is a very interesting and thought provoking class that everyone should take at some point,” says AAA Alabama spokesperson Clay Ingram. “The way we drive has changed quite a bit in recent years. With this class, drivers have the opportunity to learn some valuable defensive driving techniques, which will not only make them safer drivers, but will also earn them a discount on their automobile insurance at a time when everyone is trying to save money.”
Approved by the State of Alabama and taught by a certified instructor, Safe Driving for Mature Operators qualifies eligible drivers for a premium reduction on their current automobile insurance. The course is tailored to meet the unique needs of older drivers, and includes information on reaction time, road risks, sight, and hearing. There is no test and no driving in the course.
With 11 offices across Alabama and more than 1000 offices nationwide, AAA is North America’s largest motoring and leisure travel organization, providing its more than 54 million members with travel, insurance, financial and automotive-related services.  Since its founding in 1902, the not-for-profit, AAA has been a leader and advocate for the safety and security of all travelers.

Expert Tips For Discovering Your Family’s History

0

Family History(NAPSI)—If you’re like many Americans, you have questions about your family history. Now, genealogy experts Kenyatta Berry, Joshua Taylor and Mary Tedesco from “Genealogy Roadshow” on PBS offer some advice for researching your family’s history:
1) Collect as many oral histories as possible. Your living ancestors have information and stories to share. Interview them and record their stories.
2) Gather all the photos and documentation that you can. Items might include birth, death and marriage certificates; diplomas and other school documents; military service documents; Communion or other social, service and religious documents; and real estate documents.
3) Begin a secondary search. Fortunately, many ancestry-related documents, such as the U.S. Census, military documents, immigration lists and newspaper archives are now digitized and available on the Internet at little or no cost.
4) Consult with outside sources, such as librarians, historians, genealogy organizations and databanks to find access to resources.
5) Work backward. It’s generally easier if you begin with the present day and go back through time.
Here are two more enjoyable ways to inspire yourself and your family in your ancestry search:
1. The next time you’re planning a family reunion, make it more meaningful by incorporating a visit to a place of significance—such as a location relevant to your family history—into the festivities.
2. Watch how others go about finding their roots. Part detective story, part emotional journey, “Genealogy Roadshow” (running as of January 13 on PBS and also available at PBS.org) combines history and science to uncover the fascinating stories of diverse Americans.
Each individual featured finds that his or her past links to a larger community history, revealing the rich cultural tapestry of America. Find additional resources for tracing your own ancestry at www.PBS.org.
