You Were Mine follows the tale of Tripp Montgomery Newark and Bethy Lowry. Tripp and his family are well known denizens of Rosemary Beach. He is to attend Yale and marry a girl of the same standard – these are the plans that his rich, aristocratic father has in store for him. Surprises are on the horizon for all parties involved.
On the other hand, Bethy Lowry is a fish swimming in a different pond. Her father is far from being rich and they both live in a trailer park. In order for Tripp to live his life, he abandons the financial security his father offers. In doing so, he leaves behind a young, broken hearted Bethy, the results of a summer fling. Eight years passes swiftly and Tripp, having vowed he would return for the love of his life (Bethy) decides to go home. Musical NotesBy Esther Callens

It’s that time of the year, again! Break out the eggnog and get merry while listening to a few seasonal favorites. One that’s guaranteed to get partygoers into the holiday spirit is The Christmas Album, recorded by Human Nature, an all-male quartet from Sydney, Australia. Although this was previously released last year Down Under, it is now available in the states to make an excellent addition to your festive playlist.
Now, I will be the first to admit that there are millions or more Christmas albums and you are probably thinking what makes Human Nature’s collection stand out from the rest. Well, when Human Nature began singing some 20 plus years ago, they first started out performing Christmas Carols on their neighborhood street corner. Adding to the enchantment of this CD is the fact that this is the first holiday collection they have ever recorded. Therefore, they have taken great care in presenting a magnificent assortment of tunes and they know how to put the jolly in the party. Lastly but certainly not least, these gentlemen can sing and they are the crème de la crème of harmonization!
“White Christmas” is the first track and it is a superb way to set the mood. The outstanding arrangement on “Silent Night/Oh Holy Night” is exceptional. It is by far the best I have ever heard. A touch of Doo-Wop magic is added to “Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas” – it is perfect! Their interpretation of “Amazing Grace” is highly emotive – simply awesome! Joining Human Nature on this project are Smokey Robinson (“Please Come Home For Christmas”), Robin Meade (“Sleigh Ride”) and The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra (“Human Nature Amazing Grace-My Chains Are Gone”). Human Nature has recorded an impressive Christmas CD that I am sure will be a holiday staple for many generations.

Track listing:  White Christmas; Christmas (Baby Please Come Home); Sleigh Ride; Have Yourself A Merry Little Christmas; Winter Wonderland; Please come Home For Christmas; Silent Night/O Holy Night; Rudolph The Red Nosed Reindeer; Christmas without You; Give Love On Christmas Day; Santa Claus Is Coming To town; This Christmas; Human Nature (My Chains Are Gone); Mary’s Boy Child (Bonus Track).
Album personnel: Human Nature members – Andre Tierney; Mike Tierney; Phil Burton; Toby Allen. Special guests: Robin Meade; Smokey Robinson; The Prague Philharmonic Orchestra.

A Statement of Concern
by Jesse J. Lewis, Sr.

During a radio interview last week Charles Barkley criticized several segments of the Black community, when he expounded on claims that Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson wasn’t liked by some of his teammates in part because he wasn’t considered to be ‘Black enough.’ Here’s some of what he said:

There are a lot of Black people who are unintelligent, who don’t have success. It’s best to knock a successful Black person down ’cause they’re intelligent, they speak well, they do well in school, and they’re successful. It’s crabs in a barrel…we’re the only ethnic group that says,’hey, if you go to jail, it gives you street cred.
The concept of ‘crabs in a barrel” isn’t new, it’s universal. If you’ve ever seen a bucket of crabs at the market, those at the bottom will try to pull down the crabs that are closer to the top.

While some people agree with Charles, others have been irked by him. Some responded that they bristled at Barkley’s tendency to generalize the experience of an entire group. Finally he said:

Unfortunately, as I tell my white friends, we as Black people, we’re never going to be successful, not because of white people but because of other Black people. When you’re Black you have to deal with so much crap in your life from other Black people, it’s a dirty, dark secret; I’m glad it’s coming out.
For some reason we’re brainwashed to think if you’re not a thug or an idiot, you’re not Black enough. If you go to school, make good grades, speak intelligently and don’t break the law, you’re not a good Black person. It’s a dirty dark secret. I have to bring white people into our crap, but as a Black person, we all go through it when you’re successful.

Another controversial statement was made by a Black Republican actress, Stacy Dash. A FOX News contributor and Republican as of 2012, Stacy appearing on the Hannity show, called all Black people in Louisiana “government freeloaders who don’t work.”
When asked “has voting with Obama 95 percent of the time on Obamacare, helped the minority community in Louisiana?” Dash answered:

No, not at all. It still keeps them stuck. They’re getting money for free. They feel worthless. They’re undereducated. I mean, as long as you are that way, (Democrats) they can keep you under their control… they have a plantation mentality. As long as they give you this much money, you’ll stay right there. You don’t need to know too much because if you do, you might start thinking for yourself.”

Crystal Wright, a conservative writer, says Dash’s comments are insulting and give Blacks another reason to tune out the GOP and not take the party seriously.

The African-American Country Club

0

EDT McTierBy: Mahari A. McTier

Can you name the one place where African-American men and women of all socio-economic backgrounds and education levels come together to converse, laugh, and debate issues from love to politics for hours on end?  I thought long and hard about this question.  I thought about the church; the work place; civic groups, etc.  As I dug deeper into these groups, I found that they all, for the most part, consisted of individuals from the same or close to the same backgrounds. The answer is the Black barbershops and beauty shops. I call them the African-American Country Clubs. The traditional country club is a place where its members congregate to play golf and tennis, socialize, and discuss business in a relaxing environment. Most Country Clubs are dominated by white membership and has historically excluded diversity in its membership.
Guess what, believe it or not we have our own Country Clubs. On any given day you can find Mayor William Bell, Judge U. W. Clemon, Attorney Emory Anthony, Big Mike, Adolphus Johnson, Wardell Morris, and many of the brothers that hang out in the 4th Avenue Business District engaging in debate and conversation at my barbershop – Moore Styles Barber Shop. Its proprietor, Quincy Moore, has done a great job of creating an atmosphere that is welcoming, safe, and open to stimulating conversation. The reality is this, there is no other place where you will find the Mayor, a federal Judge, and a dude with appropriate licenses selling DVDs and CDs out his trunk laughing and feeling a sense of connection as Black men, who for the most part want the same things out of life. Those things are making their communities better, providing for their families, and having a little fun every once and awhile. The African American Country Club is a great atmosphere for its members. The Mayor gets a weekly opportunity to hear from some of his grass- root constituents in a relaxed and open environment. I have known the Mayor personally for many years, and I have seen him at his most relaxed state for the one hour at Moore Styles Shop. The guys on the block get a chance to associate with elected officials and business professionals in a peer to peer capacity where no one is judged by their title or status in life. It’s a beautiful thing to see and experience.
All of the benefits provided to members of Country Clubs can be found in our barber and beauty shops. Instead of golf and tennis, checkers and chess is played.  Instead of wine and cheese we have Green Acres wings and Faygo Red Pop. At our Country Club we are more diverse and inclusive of all races and cultures. You can buy a DVD, an outfit, get a haircut, and have stimulating conversation with your fellow man or women in one visit. Can you do this at the traditional Country Club?  The answer is no, and for all this we get it for free with no membership fees!
