K. A. Tucker’s (One Tiny Lie: A Novel, Allegiance) latest in print offers an absolutely splendid read. Ten Tiny Breaths is a wonderful tale of revelation, romance and redemption. Newly nominated in the romance category for The Goodreads Choice Award For Best Books, Ten Tiny Breaths presents a cast of breathtaking characters.
Four years ago, Kacey was a happy teenager.  However, that was before a moment in time changed her life forever.  When Kacey is left the only survivor of a drunk driver car wreck that killed her parents, best friend and boyfriend – she is devastated. She is broken physical and mentally and her life takes a downward spiral. Hoping to make a new start, she and her 15- year- old- sister, Livie, moves down south to escape the discomforts that Michigan has to offer.
In the beginning, life in Miami is a struggle but Kacey is an elitist in survival. She quickly realizes that relocating has a lot to offer. Perhaps too much, once she factors in Trent.
Trent is Kacey’s next door neighbor. He has the good guy/bad boy look and it wears him well. Trent is proving to be a major distraction for Kacey. Not wanting to disclose her shattered past, Kacey is determined to keep everyone at arm’s length.  Likewise, Trent is attracted to Kacey and he will/did do everything to break down the barrier that’s blocking their relationship. Life plays a sweet melody for this couple until Trent’s secrets are exposed. Now that the relationship is vulnerable, Kacey must find a way to heal lest she spiral further into despair.
Ten Tiny Breaths is the ideal romance novel. K. A. Tucker eloquently displays life’s joys and pains in a realistic fashion.
K. A. Tucker surprisingly at six years old wrote her first book with her school librarian’s help. She has since authored numerous Young Adult and Adult titles.  She, her husband and daughters makes Ontario home.

MUSICAL NOTES

Musical NotesBringing a beautiful voice that’s nothing short of amazing is the incomparable Kenya. Her musical offering, Jazz Made Rhythm, is a fresh take on some definitive standards. Breathing a welcomed change, her matchless sultry vocals on “I Can’t Help It” has hit the Top Ten on the United Kingdom Charts. She is an extraordinary talent.
The very first note on Jazz Made Rhythm validates that Kenya sings from her heart.  This fact permeates through the entire collection as her emotions are easily expressed and felt throughout her music. The album opens on a high note with Kenya giving her spin on  Bill Wither’s “Lovely Day.” She adds a very special and unique touch to this feel good tune. Working her outstanding vocal magic on Michael Jackson’s masterpiece “I Can’t Help It”, she effortless pays more than proper homage to the King of Pop by presenting the ultimate in performance.
Special guest Dee Wilson joins Kenya on a magnificent interpretation of “Summertime”. This collaboration is excellent and the exclusive arrangement is exceptional.  In fact, this is by far a classic work of lyrical art. The surprising rhythmic impressions featured in “My Funny Valentine” and “He Loves Me” exhibits her incredible versatility in range and pitch. Kenya is a phenomenal, soulful songstress – a gift rarely seen.
Kenya McGuire Johnson’s (aka Kenya) musical career started when she was a child. However, after years of singing and countless piano lessons, music was put on the back burner as her nurturing spirit gave leeway to a career in physical therapy. In 2008, Kenya knew something was missing in her life but could not ascertain what it was. This left her in a state of despair as she stated, “I had some come to Jesus moments because I knew something was wrong.”
By chance she reacquainted herself with music and soon found her joy in it. Through a series of events she was soon in the studio doing what she loves. Since, she has opened for Lalah Hathaway and has performed at the Chicago House of Blues, The Biltmore in Los Angeles and numerous other venues.  Kenya has not given up on her nurturing spirit. It has just taken another configuration – music.

African americanOscar Micheaux: A Self-Made Man profiles the struggle and success of the first great Black filmmaker

LOS ANGELES – (BLACK PR WIRE)  – (BUSINESS WIRE) –Oscar Micheaux: A Self-Made Man, a new release from The Hollywood Press, brings the story of America’s greatest African American filmmakers to life. The book is designed for everyone who loves movies and would like to introduce young audiences to the history of film. The illustrated soft cover book provides insightful glimpses into the lives and work of African American filmmakers, memorable screen icons and less familiar figures.
Written by Jeremy Geltzer, a film professor, entertainment lawyer and author, the book is targeted to middle grade readers, ages 9-13. Oscar Micheaux’s life vividly demonstrates the American Dream. The son of ex-sharecroppers, Micheaux worked odd jobs from Pullman Porter to Dakota homesteader before becoming one of the first Black filmmakers. He made films outside Hollywood that were tailored to Black audiences using his own stars. Among Micheaux’s discoveries were Paul Robeson and Robert Earl Jones, father of James Earl Jones.
In less than 30 years Micheaux directed over 40 films. While the director has been passed over in many film history books, his story remains inspirational. Micheaux believed in his dream; he struggled to share his message of self-reliance and betterment. Other chapters in the book chronicle the African American community’s hard fought battle for recognition in Hollywood, from Sidney Poitier to Octavia Spencer and other Black directors from the silent era to Spike Lee and Lee Daniels.

Oscar Micheaux: A Self-Made Man is available for $6.99 from Amazon.com and $3.99 as an e-book at the Apple e-bookstore. More information is available at Hollywood-Press.com and on Twitter @HollywoodBabel.

Marshall County Man Attacked by Deer, Charged with Illegal Possession

0

Deer-Marshall-Co-Pen_ADCNRJulius Dunsmore, a resident of Marshall County, has been charged with illegally possessing seven deer, one of which attacked and severely injured him last week. When Dunsmore entered the holding pen, a large buck attacked him. In addition to numerous puncture wounds and extensive bruises, Dunsmore suffered a loss of vision in one eye.

When enforcement officers from the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (ADCNR) learned of the incident, Dunsmore was charged with illegal possession of the deer, which were removed from his property and euthanized. Results of laboratory tests for pathogens or diseases are pending.

ADCNR’s Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries Division (WFF) prohibits the keeping of most wildlife in captivity for several reasons, public safety being foremost. Even small wildlife, such as raccoons, skunks and foxes can carry a wide variety of parasites and pathogens that can prove fatal to domestic animals and humans.

According to WFF Enforcement Chief Kevin Dodd, domesticated deer pose serious threats to the public, especially when bucks become combative during breeding season. “At certain times of the year, it’s natural for bucks to fight among themselves. When you put them in captivity, they do the same thing with humans. Does can also inflict serious injuries by kicking.” Dodd says reintroducing domesticated deer into the wild is not an option as they normally return to inhabited areas where human conflicts occur. Illegally held captive deer in Alabama have caused numerous serious injuries and one fatality in recent years.

Dodd says evidence indicates that some of Dunsmore’s deer came from Tennessee and at least one came from Guntersville State Park. Illegally importing deer from other states puts native deer populations at risk by potentially bringing in pathogens and diseases such as Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD). “No Alabama deer has tested positive for CWD and we want to keep it that way,” Dodd said. “Preventing the importation of deer from other states is one way to do that.”

WFF law enforcement officers urge the public’s cooperation in preventing potential harm to others by identifying persons who are illegally holding deer or other wildlife in captivity. If you have information regarding illegal captive deer, please call 1-800-272-GAME (4263).

The Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources promotes wise stewardship, management and enjoyment of Alabama’s natural resources through five divisions: Marine Police, Marine Resources, State Lands, State Parks, and Wildlife and Freshwater Fisheries. Law enforcement gets Smart on Crime to decrease local gun violence

Smart on Crimeby Jessica Jones

Local and federal law enforcement announced their partnership in an initiative called Smart on Crime, led by the Bureau of Alcohol and Tobacco Firearms and Explosives to decrease incidents of gun violence in the Birmingham area.
United States Attorney Joyce Vance announced the importance of the partnership in a brief statement to the press.
“Our community is covered up in gun violence and it’s unacceptable,” Attorney Vance, said. “It’s time for us to take it on and challenge it. The Department of Justice is engaged in a strategy called Smart on Crime and essentially that involves partnerships between federal and local groups to attack violence problems where we find them: in the neighborhoods, on the streets, and to get people who use guns in our community in jail where they belong.”
Attorney Vance also stressed the importance of anonymous tips to law enforcement when citizens are witness to criminal activity.
“Because of the forward leaning work of the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms,” she said, “We’re announcing a partnership that will bring information to our community, letting people know how to use tip lines to advise law enforcements about criminal activities so that that the communities, in essence, can take control of their own safety and help us make communities safer for the people who live in them.”
While the city is still making progress, Mayor William Bell commended the diligence and commitment of local law enforcement to decrease local gun violence.
“Our communities all throughout the state of Alabama have been plagued by a plethora of guns on the street and these guns lead to no good deeds,” Mayor Bell said. “It is through the hard work of the ATF, the hard work of the United States Attorney office, our DA office, our sheriff department and our own police department that today we’re announcing this collaboration to make sure we do all that we can to curb gun violence on our streets.”
The mayor expressed his hope for the collaboration’s success and made a personal promise to the city for its safety.
“This collaboration will yield great benefits to our citizens to let them know that they are not forgotten, let them know that our deepest concern is to build stronger neighborhoods, neighborhoods that are free from violence, neighborhoods that can prosper and grow,” Mayor Bell said. “So I’m happy to be a part of this front line effort. “As mayor of this great city, I pledge to work diligently to make sure that we live up to the commitment that we have made to our citizens to make them feel safe and protected. “

Fifteen More State Schools Earn “Heart-Safe School” Designation

0

BIRMINGHAM – Fifteen Alabama sSchoolchools were recently named “Heart-Safe Schools” by Alabama LifeStart for agreeing to add automated external defibrillator (AED) training to their classroom curriculum. Alabama LifeStart will also be awarding each of the schools a free AED for their efforts to prevent cardiac arrest.
The following schools were honored:
•    Alabama Christian Academy
•    Benjamin Russell High School
•    Collinsville High School
•    Douglas High School
•    Fultondale High School
•    Lynn High School
•    Maplesville High School

•    Moody High School
•    Pleasant Home School
•    Sulligent High School
•    Red Level High School
•    Thorsby High School
•    Waterloo High School
•    West Limestone High School
These 15 high schools will begin training students in the proper usage of AEDs in the case of a cardiac emergency. AEDs and AED training will improve the schools’ ability to respond quickly and efficiently to a cardiac emergency.
As of 2011, every public middle, junior and senior high school in the state was equipped with at least one AED thanks in large part to a partnership of Alabama LifeStart, Children’s of Alabama and Lord Wedgwood Charity.
Unfortunately, few staff and even fewer students know how to use them and some have only limited access to the equipment. Nationwide, about 7,000 high school age children die from sudden cardiac arrest and only 5 to 10 percent survive without immediate treatment. An AED can increase the survival rate to 50 percent.
