Baseball Giant Willie Mays Immortalized With Mural in Downtown Birmingham

0

By Solomon Crenshaw Jr. | The Birmingham Times

For years to come, passersby and visitors and residents will get a chance to see the signature smile of baseball giant and Birmingham icon Willie Mays flashed from his rookie year all the way to the baseball Hall of Fame.

With Mays having passed away Tuesday night at the age of 93, that smile was immortalized in downtown Birmingham on a mural commissioned by Major League Baseball and T-Mobile.

The painting, near the intersection of First Avenue North and 18th Street, shows the legendary outfielder with his hands on his knees while grinning from ear to ear.

The mural dedication on Wednesday afternoon is one of many events tied to MLB at Rickwood Field, which is Major League Baseball’s recognition of the Negro Leagues from which Mays blossomed. The first of three games at the century-old ballpark – the Minor League contest between the Birmingham Barons and the Montgomery Biscuits on Tuesday – was interrupted with the jarring news that Mays had passed away.

The week of special events culminates Thursday when the San Francisco Giants, Mays’s former team, faces the St. Louis Cardinals.

Chuck Styles painted the mural of Willie May in downtown Birmingham. (Solomon Crenshaw Jr., For The Birmingham Times)

Some have suggested that the passing of Mays, who had already announced he wasn’t traveling to the area where he grew up, was a bit of bad timing. Larry Baer, the president and chief executive officer of the San Francisco Giants, disagreed.

“Willie was a very spiritual person and I believe that Willie thought things were meant to be,” Baer said. “He was so excited about everybody coming to Birmingham and celebrating the history of the Negro Leagues that in some ways, … it’s all good. ‘I can leave the earth and be with you in spirit.’”

Mays always talked about those with whom he would unite like Monte Irvin of the New York Giants and Bobby Bonds of the San Francisco Giants, Baier said.

Jeff Bleich is the trustee of Willie Mays’ estate and chair of the board of the Hall of Famer’s foundation, the Say Hey Foundation. And for a quarter century, he called Mays his friend.

“I’m just heartbroken, but also just inspired by all the love that he generated in this world,” Bleich said. “It’s overwhelming to see the outpouring that his loss has provoked. I would just spend time with him three, four days a week. Just as a friend, I’m gonna miss him.”

Bleich said he felt a fullness and an emptiness with the passing of his friend.

“Even though he was 93 and you know that no one lives forever, it was a gut punch to lose him,” the foundation chairman said. “And yet, the more you see all the love he generated, the more it fills you back up. And that’s it. He always felt like that was his role, to fill other people with joy and excitement, enthusiasm and hope. He wanted to bring that. He loved making people smile and laugh with old stories. That’s who he was.”

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania artist Chuck Styles painted the mural that drew about 100 people to the empty lot on a hot afternoon. Once he landed Tuesday night, he learned that Mays had passed.

“My heart goes out to his family and all his supporters and fans, his colleagues … those that he’s inspired,” Styles said. “I just recently laid my grandfather to rest on Monday so hearing his passing automatically made me remember my own grandfather.

“…the one thing that we can just do is be thankful,” the artist said. “Be thankful that we got to experience a blessed person like Willie Mays who inspires so many other great baseball players and just Black people in general.

“Yeah, it’s with a heavy heart that we are here today but I’m just going to be thankful,” Styles said. “I wouldn’t be here standing here in Birmingham if it wasn’t for Willie Mays. I’m just thankful for the legacy that he’s left for all of us to follow.”

The mural was well received although a correction will be needed.

One of the pennants on the mural says Mays earned an MVP award in 1956. He actually won that award in 1965.

Mayor Randall Woodfin cited former President Barack Obama, who said Mays’ life laid the groundwork for him becoming the leader of a nation.

“With one bat, with one simple bat,” the mayor said, “he knocked down so many walls. Every Black athlete whoever has stepped up to the plate, literally and figuratively, in any sport – and I mean any sport – owes Willie Mays a debt of gratitude. He along with the members of the Negro Leagues and our own Black Barons, were pioneers, activists and, my favorite, real life superheroes. The entire state of Alabama is so proud for all of us to call him our own.”

Bleich said Mays was always on Team Birmingham, making it clear that the first posthumous gift from his foundation would go to the Birmingham/Fairfield area. The longtime friend read a note Mays penned when he realized he could not come for the MLB at Rickwood events.

“Birmingham, wish I could be with you all today,” he read. “This is where I’m from.”

And, thanks to the mural dedicated Wednesday, this is where he will always be.

Pridefest, Parade Participants Celebrate Their Individuality Throughout June Events

By Sym Posey | The Birmingham Times

Among hundreds gathered this month as Central Alabama Pride celebrated its 46th anniversary in Birmingham’s Linn Park was Travis Jackson, public speaker, activist, and Iraq War Veteran.

Jackson said he wasn’t in attendance just to participate but wanted to make a statement with his own “Progressive Pride Flag” which featured a balled up brown fist.

“I love when people ask about the flag because it’s shocking that a lot of people don’t understand the significance of it,” said Jackson, who is from Houston and considers Birmingham, a second home. “This progressive pride flag with the brown fist, in my opinion, symbolizes Black, indigenous and people of color. I see it as the norm.”

Jackson said he found irony in this month Pridefest in Linn Park, the site of protests in 2020 after George Floyd was killed when Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin, knelt on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes and protestors took aim at the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument in the park.

“It’s ironic because Black, indigenous and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, Intersex, and Asexual (LGBTQIA+) people of color are still having their, ‘I can’t breathe moments.’ It’s already so difficult to breathe in a country where it smothers you with systemic oppression such as racism, misogyny, homophobia, transphobia, and xenophobia, and ableism. I think that having it (Pridefest) at Linn Park says we demand that the system be taken off our necks,” said Jackson.

The gathering in Linn Park followed a record-breaking 5,000-plus in attendance at the Pride parade on June 8, drawing the largest crowd in CAP’s history, according to Josh Coleman, president of Central Alabama Pride.

Coleman attributed the record crowd to “people wanting to come together to celebrate … not themselves but with our allies to celebrate Pride Month.”

The CAP director took note of the number of families who attended both the parade and Pridefest. “All of those events are geared toward to be family friendly, and I think it shows … we’re one big family and that Alabama, and particularly Birmingham, has an umbrella where we’re one big tent. We’re starting to see younger generations embrace all communities throughout Alabama to make this a place welcome for everyone.”

During Pridefest, Mayor Randall Woodfin said the “city of Birmingham, for the last 46 years, has stood in solidarity with Central Pride of Alabama… today is about celebrating inclusion, it’s about standing in solidarity, it’s also about supporting everyone’s identity in this community,”

Over 3,500 people attended the festival in Linn Park as multitude of vendors lined the pathways in the park, several booths gave out free contraceptive along and Narcan and the Jefferson County Department of Health conducted free testing for sexually transmitted infections (STIs), or sexually transmitted diseases (STDs) patrons on site.

Read Freely Alabama, a volunteer group of citizens who oppose censorship in local libraries was also present. “I’ve been affiliated (Read Freely Alabama) since December, but we’ve been going since last summer. We’re not even a year old,” said volunteer Dasha Maye.

“As the scale of censorship efforts and attacks on libraries have expanded across the state, we have grown to meet that challenge,” said Maye. “When the book ban started happening, a group of moms you said this cannot happen. They took to Facebook groups, they started going to city council, they started going to local board meetings, and just paying more attention to try and fight back.”

The main stage included performances from local acts to several RuPaul Drag Race All-stars along with special performances from 90’s hit “Freak Like Me” singer, Adina Howard and Robin S.

Robert Brown, Miss Central Pride Alabama, on Being a ‘Glamazon’

By Sym Posey | The Birmingham Times

The third time was the charm for Robert Brown – this year’s Miss Central Pride Alabama.

“I’ve competed three times and my final time [this year competing for the title] I was successful on winning,” said Brown, also known as Tiffany Carrington, a popular Birmingham female impersonator.

Pride Month has been especially busy for Brown, who performed at the 46th Annual Pridefest hosted by Central Alabama Pride (CAP) this month in Linn Park. CAP is a nonprofit that organizes Pride Activities in Birmingham, AL and the surrounding areas.

Brown has entertained for 16 years and has more than 30 bookings year-round both in Alabama and other states. He said he was confident he would win this time around. “I’m a Glamazon. I love being beautiful. I love being pretty. I love having on the lashes and nails. The details of the beaded gowns.”

Part of Brown’s duties include travel, fundraisers and tours to attract more to support Pride events statewide.

“We just got through 10 days straight of community service work which was all the festival activities, and it takes over a year to plan. It’s a lot of work and if you’re not used to it, it can be [a lot].”

Through all the glitz and the glam that comes with being a female impersonator, Brown’s biggest inspiration is,” just knowing that I can bring entertainment to people who don’t get it. Some people in the community might now attend church. When we perform gospel numbers, that’s the one time that they are connect to a higher being or maybe they aren’t fortunate enough to go out and see Broadway so if I do something like [the play] Gypsy, they get a chance to see that.”

In going for the title, Brown, 37, said when he wanted to change a few things about the competition. “It was not perfect. Being an African American entertainer in the South, sometimes we don’t get the fair treatment. I wanted to show those that looked like me that came after me [know] that you can do this too. “

“ … They love us on stage. We can draw people out with our performances and a lot of times we use those avenues to promote safe sex and all-around sexual awareness like HIV and aids.”

“Vision”

Pride Month has been especially busy for Robert Brown, a.k.a. Tiffany Carrington, who performed at the 46th Annual Pridefest hosted by Central Alabama Pride (CAP) this month in Linn Park. (Provided)

Brown takes his role as a drag performer seriously and admires a number of entertainers. Those include Tamia; Toni Braxton; Patti LaBelle, Chaka Khan and Diana Ross, Dianne Warwick to name a few.

As for his most glamorous, he names “Lynn Whitfield; Marilyn Monroe, of course – one of the most glamorous and iconic women – Dorothy Dandridge, Diane Carroll I would consider as over glamorous.”

Brown said he sews many of his own creations. “A lot of pieces are pieces that I’ve already made. Some of them will come from different local stores, boutiques. With entertainment you can pull pieces from anywhere.

“You have to have a vision. It starts with what you’re going to be doing in the piece. If it’s an evening gown you may go to an expensive boutique. You may have it constructed – it just depends on what your money looks like. ”

A must for his wardrobe is “big jewelry and lashes,” he said. “We have ‘drag jewelry’ which is custom made. A lot of those pieces that they see are soldered pieces; we have a company that makes jewelry specifically for drag queens, out of this world pieces. Stuff that you don’t see every day.”

He gets most of his inspiration from watching older pageants from an archive of DVDs and CDs. “I’m a connoisseur of old pageants, I like to study, you can pick some different talents and looks you can revamp.”

Brown has been performing for nearly two decades but now faces opposition from some lawmakers who want to ban drag shows.

“Everyone has their own opinion on what is art,” he said. “In my interpretation it is a form of art … if this is not your type of art then don’t go to that particular museum. You have to seek out to see a drag show unless you click on your TV to see RuPaul’s Drag Race, but it is an art form. If you dislike something just don’t be around it. I don’t go see things I don’t like.”

The Energy

As a Fairfield native, Brown graduated from Fairfield High Preparatory School in 2005.  “I played football, basketball, I was a normal kid. I was a part of several things,” said Brown.

He went on to attend Miles College where he studied music and currently works as a wedding and events planner at an area firm.

Fresh out of high school he started to attend the local night clubs.

After winning a contest at Quest in downtown Birmingham’s south side he’s been doing drag ever since.

“In 2005, it was very taboo to dress in women’s clothing I had to overcome when everyone started to find out that I was doing the Tiffany character. A lot of family members did not like it. I come from a very Christian background home. My father, it took him a few years for him to wrap his head around that this is what I was doing as well as the challenges of being homosexual.”

Not long after his debut as Tiffany he made his first attempt at Miss Central Alabama Pride. “I did it on a dare. One Halloween someone said to me, ‘you would make a pretty girl,’ and I kind of shunned it. My younger self at the time just didn’t believe that. I started to see the drag shows and gradually became more interested. “

“My first signs of CAP that I remember were the parades in Birmingham. It was a small thing when it started. It only went a block or so.  I [still] attend the parade every year. I like the events that they put out like skating with the kids. I like when they come out with their parents, and you get to see the support. It’s really a fun time. “

Asked the best part of his stage persona, Brown said “being able to transform from one entity to the next. When you take a plane-faced young man and you glam him up to something different I think the transformation for me is the most exciting part and the touring. I get a chance to meet so many different people. It’s the energy.”

On Juneteenth, EJI Dedicates National Monument to Freedom

Hundreds gathered in the early hours for the Equal Justice Initiative’s dedication of the National Monument to Freedom at the newly-opened Freedom Monument Sculpture Park in Montgomery on Juneteenth.

The 17-acre site displays a combination of contemporary artwork, first- person narratives, and historical artifacts that tell the stories of more than 10 million Black people who were enslaved on American soil.

The Freedom Monument Sculpture Park is the latest addition to EJI’s existing legacy sites – the National Memorial for Peace and Justice and the Legacy Museum.

EJI founder and director Bryan Stevenson encouraged people to speak “honestly” about the country’s history.

“I think a lot of people … are afraid or unwilling to be courageous enough to talk honestly. I learned in so many other areas, if you are the victim of abuse, you are not going to overcome that if you never talk about it … a path to healing is a path that requires that we talk honestly.

“We have to be willing to acknowledge the harm, the wrong doing, the pain, and the suffering and then begin to take those steps that allow us to repair to get to that place to achieve truth in reconciliation, truth in restoration , and truth in repair,” said Stevenson.

The art collection at the Sculpture Park works in tandem with historical artifacts to dramatize the brutality of slavery while simultaneously illuminating the strength, dignity, and power of enslaved people and their descendants.

The main attraction of the park is the nearly four-story, 43-foot-tall, National Monument to Freedom, that lists 122,000 surnames of nearly five million Black people listed in the U.S. Census.

“I want everybody to feel like this is a place they should come. No matter what your ethnicity, whether your native born or an immigrant.  We want everyone to come to learn this history and I hope we can encourage people to find the courage to do the truth telling,” said Stevenson.

Kimmie Stylz, Winner of Alabama Launchpad Competition, A Natural With Hair Care

0
Kim Cornner, also known as Kimmie Stylz, won an Alabama Launchpad Award this year. (Stanley Parrish)

By Keisa Sharpe | For The Birmingham Times

Kim Cornner’s gift for styling hair came so easily that she almost missed her calling.

“I had friends tell me that I should do hair, and I was like, ‘Everybody can do that. They were like, ‘Kim, you have a gift.’”

That gift has paid off for Cornner, also known as Kimmie Stylz.

“I’ve been working for myself full-time for eight years now, and it is absolutely a blessing being able to just come back to that which just came easy to me,” said the stylist, who received a $25,000 boost in April, as the winner of a Alabama Launchpad pitch competition.

“It’s a program that lasts about six weeks or so, [during which] you are matched up with advisors and pitch coaches to try to position you to be able to present your company at a different level,” Cornner explained.

Offering safe products that contain natural ingredients for African American hair is the driving force behind the Kimmie Stylz hair care line. (Provided)

The reward is proof that her passion is paying off, she said, adding that she believes she won the pitch competition because of two things — the presentation of her products and her personal story behind the creation of Kimmie Stylz.

“For years, too many Black women have suffered health issues from using harsh and harmful hair care products,” said Cornner. “I have suffered on both ends. One, having my hair damaged from products with unhealthy ingredients, and, two, I received a hysterectomy due to fibroids, which I believe was from using certain chemicals for so long on my hair.”

Her own testimony fuels her enthusiasm for offering safe products that contain natural ingredients for African American hair—and is the driving force behind the Kimmie Stylz hair care line.

“Creating the hair care product line was easy for me because this is what I do every day. I work with many products, and I’ve seen products that didn’t work. I wanted to create something for my clients that worked,” said Cornner, who makes nearly all of her products in her Birmingham home.

It started with her mixing her own products using natural oils “through trial and error” and took time. The Kimmie Stylez product line now has a total of nine items, including shampoos and conditioners, along with Biotin and Tea Tree Scalp Treatment, Aloe Vera Moisturizing Spray, Avocado and Jojoba Anti Breakage Oil, and a Coconut and Olive Oil Curling Cream.

Clients have told others about the products, and that has led to even more business. To keep up with demand, Cornner has a devoted team that includes family—her mother, Wanda Little, daughter, 13-year-old Eva, and son, 8-year-old Zae—to not only help her fulfill orders and but also keep her encouraged.

“They really believe in my product, and I have [their] support,” said Cornner, a 2005 George Washington Carver High School graduate.

Moving to the Magic City

She is originally from Trenton, New Jersey. Her family relocated to Birmingham in 1997, following one of her aunts who moved to Alabama for a job. Because the family was new to the state, they leaned on each other for support—and that closeness is something the stylist values to this day.

“We didn’t know anyone, so that forced us to rely on each other and stay very tight knit. We are very family-oriented, and we always celebrate holidays together. That’s what I love most about my family—how close we are. I believe relocating to Alabama brought us closer,” she said.

While growing up in Trenton, Cornner wanted to be a pediatrician or physician’s assistant. A lack of finances prevented her from choosing that path, but she embarked on another one. She earned an Associate Degree in Applied Science in Clinical Laboratory Technology from Jefferson State Community College in 2011 and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from Walden University in 2019.

Meeting Customers’ Needs

Cornner points to one product her customer’s love: the best-selling No Oooch & Ouch Detangling Serum. She said customers enjoy her service because she takes on their pain point, and this specific detangling product helps with that.

“The biggest issue I’ve seen with styling natural hair is a lot of women were afraid of [hair washing] because they couldn’t get [their hair] or their kids’ hair to detangle,” Cornner said. “I created this serum that, when applied to natural hair, allows the curls to slide apart from one another.”

Customers frequently do a double-take when she puts the product on their hair: “They spin around in the chair, admiring the results, and ask, ‘What did you put on my hair?’” said Cornner, whose customers often confess that her product gives results they’ve never seen before.

Kimmy Stylz is run out of Cornner’s home, which has proven extremely helpful and convenient for the mother of two. “It has been a blessing to have a home-based business and be able to watch my children grow up. … The convenience of it all has really helped, too,” she said.

Cornner cares for all styles of natural hair, including braids, and she specializes in loc hair styles. “I love to teach people about their hair, not just how to style hair but … how to care for their hair. I understand now that hair care really is a lost art,” she said.

How to Protect Yourself And Your Family From the Sun’s UV Rays

0

We often hear commercials, along with our doctors and others, telling us it’s important to wear sunscreen when outside in the sun. These cautionary messages are meant to help protect us and/or loved ones from skin cancer which can be caused by too much sun exposure.

We understand we need to protect ourselves from the sun because it can potentially cause skin cancer, but do we understand how and why? The answer for most of us is no, not really. Most people understand the underlying concept not the actual in-depth reasons the sun can have this type of impact. So, this safety article will explore the scientific, as well as some medical reasons, of how and why the sun can have this type of possible devastating impact.

We understand we need to protect ourselves from the sun because it can potentially cause skin cancer, but do we understand how and why? (Adobe Stock)

To understand one must start with the term “ultraviolet radiation.” Ultraviolet radiation (UV) is a type of light. Sunlight has UV rays, along with other kinds of rays. Some light bulbs give off UV rays. UV light bulbs are used in tanning machines, some nail dryers, machines used by dermatologists, and more.

There are three types of UV rays. They are:

• UVA. These rays go into the skin more deeply than UVB rays. These play a major part in skin aging and wrinkling. They also contribute to the growth of skin cancer.
• UVB. These rays are the main cause of sunburn. They tend to damage the skin’s outer layers. These rays play a key role in the growth of skin cancer.
• UVC. These rays do not reach our skin. The Earth’s atmosphere absorbs UVC rays before they reach the surface.

With this additional knowledge you can make more informed decisions as it relates to the length of time you and others should spend directly in the sun. Since this a summer safety series all of the information is intertwined. Therefore, we will merge this safety article with last week’s safety article to continue the discussion about sunscreen safety tips.

Children under six months typically should not wear sunscreen. This is because infant skin is more sensitive than adult skin. To protect infants younger than six months, the American Association of Dermatology (AAD) recommends keeping them in the shade as much as possible; dressing them in protective clothing, such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, and a wide-brimmed hat; and making sure they stay hydrated. The clothing should be lightly colored made of light airy material.

Remember sunscreen is only one tool in your UV safety toolbox. There are many ways to reduce your exposure to UV radiation. Experts recommend combing sunscreen use with wearing protective clothing, staying in the shade when possible, and avoiding outdoor activities when the sun is most intense. Keeping an Eye on Safety may require you to use a combination of all of these.

The San Francisco Giants Issued the Following Statement on Behalf of Willie Mays’ Family and the Organization:

“It is with great sadness that we announce that San Francisco Giants Legend and Hall of Famer Willie Mays passed away peacefully this afternoon at the age of 93.”

“My father has passed away peacefully and among loved ones,” said Michael Mays. “I want to thank you all from the bottom of my broken heart for the unwavering love you have shown him over the years. You have been his life’s blood.”

“Today we have lost a true legend”, said Giants Chairman Greg Johnson. “In the pantheon of baseball greats, Willie Mays’ combination of tremendous talent, keen intellect, showmanship, and boundless joy set him apart. A 24-time All-Star, the Say Hey Kid is the ultimate Forever Giant. He had a profound influence not only on the game of baseball, but on the fabric of America. He was an inspiration and a hero who will be forever remembered and deeply missed.”

“I fell in love with baseball because of Willie, plain and simple,” said Giants President and Chief Executive Officer Larry Baer. “My childhood was defined by going to Candlestick with my dad, watching Willie patrol centerfield with grace and the ultimate athleticism. Over the past 30 years, working with Willie, and seeing firsthand his zest for life and unbridled passion for giving to young players and kids, has been one of the joys of my life.”

At the age of 16, Willie Mays joined the Birmingham Black Barons of the Negro American League in 1948, playing only on Sunday during the school year. The New York Giants purchased his contract in 1950 when he graduated from Fairfield Industrial High School, and after two seasons in the minor leagues he was in center field at the Polo Grounds in 1951 and was named the NL Rookie of the Year at the end of that season.

He spent most of 1952 and all of 1953 in the Army, but in 1954, Mays led the league with a .345 batting average and 13 triples while hitting 41 home runs and driving in 110 runs. The Giants again won the pennant and in the World Series, faced the Cleveland Indians – winners of an AL-record 111 games. With Game 1 tied 2-2 in the top of the eighth, runners on first and second, and no outs, Vic Wertz hit a towering drive that would have been a home run in most parks. Mays, playing shallow, took off and ran with his back to the ball, caught it over the shoulder an estimated 460 feet from the plate, turned, and fired. Larry Doby, who had to turn back and tag up at second base, was forced to stop at third. The Giants went on to win the game and sweep the Series. “The Catch” is considered by many to be one of the greatest defensive plays in history.

Mays went on to play 21 seasons with the Giants and finished up with the Mets in 1972 and 1973. He hit over .300 10 times, en route to a career .301 mark, and finished with 3,293 hits.

He also was a member of the Concordia Club. He received honorary degrees from Dartmouth, Miles College, Ohio State University, San Francisco State and Yale University and had spent the past 36 years in the Giants front office.
