Birmingham Launches Public Safety-Themed Academy to Connect Residents with Departments that Keep Communities Safe

The City of Birmingham is giving residents a direct line to the city departments and public safety professionals they rely on in moments of concern, emergency, and conflict through a new special edition of the City’s Academy of Civic Engagement, known as ACE.

Since its launch in 2019, ACE has empowered more than 1,400 Birmingham residents with a deeper understanding of how municipal government works and how they can become more engaged leaders in their neighborhoods. ACE graduates have gone on to serve as neighborhood leaders, advocates and active participants in shaping their communities.

Building on the success of Code ACE, which connected residents this spring with the departments responsible for code enforcement and public works, the Mayor’s Office of Public Affairs is launching Public Safety ACE.

The four-week series will give residents an inside look at the departments and units responsible for protecting Birmingham, including Birmingham Police, Fire & Rescue, EMS, 911/Emergency Communications, the Community Violence Intervention Team and Municipal Court. Residents will learn what these departments do, when and how to engage them, and what to expect when seeking city services or assistance.

Public Safety ACE begins Thursday, Sept. 3, with sessions held each Thursday throughout the month from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Birmingham Public Library, Central Branch downtown. Each session will feature practical information, interactive discussions and an opportunity for residents to ask questions directly of city leaders and department representatives.
Public Safety ACE Schedule:
  • September 3: Birmingham Police Department
  • September 10: Fire & Rescue / EMS
  • September 17: 911 / Emergency Communications & Community Violence Intervention Team
  • September 24: Municipal Court
