The City of Birmingham’s Finance Department is expanding its online tax payment services as part of its ongoing efforts to improve efficiency, enhance customer convenience, and modernize payment operations. Beginning July 1, 2026, tax payments will only be accepted via the city’s secure online payment platform or in person at city hall. Tax payments will no longer be received by mail.

The updated payment process applies to municipal tax payments, including business license, occupational, sales, and other city tax-related payments.

“This transition supports the City’s commitment to providing faster, more secure, and more reliable service to residents and businesses,” said Diana Bolden, director of Finance. “Expanding online payment options allows taxpayers to conduct business with the city more efficiently while maintaining the ability to make payments in person for those who prefer direct assistance.”

The City’s online payment portal provides taxpayers with the ability to:

  • Submit payments securely 24 hours a day, seven days a week
  • Receive immediate payment confirmations
  • Reduce processing delays associated with mailed payments

“This operational change will improve processing times, reduce administrative costs, and strengthen payment tracking and security,” said Robert Averhart, deputy director of Finance.  “We are committed to making the transition as smooth as possible and will continue providing support to taxpayers throughout implementation.”

Taxpayers may continue to make payments in person during normal business hours on the first floor of City Hall, located at 710 20th St. North.
