Safety Protection for Your Pets as Freezing Temps Grip Birmingham

0

January is typically the coldest month in our region of the country. We see our lowest temperatures and often a wintery mix which may include rain and sleet with snow flurries at times.  As humans we have pretty much mastered how to safely dress and behave under frigid weather conditions, but many pet owners have various questions on the best ways to protect their pets under these same types of weather patterns.

This month’s article will explore a variety of topics regarding safety during cold frigid winter weather. This week’s safety article will focus on winter safety protection for pets because winter can sometimes bring unexpected dangers for your pets.

Let’s start by outlining some safety protection measures for your pets beginning with:

When it is below 20 degrees Fahrenheit, it is wise to keep your pet indoors. Shorthaired dogs, cats and puppies should be kept indoors when the temperature falls below 40 degrees.

Remember if it is cold for you, it is cold for your pets. (Adobe Stock)

Be aware of salt and other ice-melting chemicals on the streets and sidewalks. They are an irritant to your pet’s paws and may cause injury if swallowed. Use a warm cloth to clean off any salt or chemical residues after a walk. Be first on your block to provide your dog with a set of booties to protect his/her paws from these types of harsh and cold chemicals.

Make sure outside water sources do not freeze over. Pets cannot burn the calories they need to stay warm without a fresh supply of water.

Check your garage and driveway for antifreeze. Antifreeze tastes sweet to your pet and most brands are very poisonous. Contact the veterinarian immediately if you suspect your pet has consumed antifreeze.

Pet grooming is very important; a matted coat will not protect your pet from the cold. Be watchful of ice or salt that may become entangled in long hair dogs and remove it immediately.

Remember if it is cold for you, it is cold for your pets. Pets are part of your family so let’s Keep an Eye on Safety for them during frigid temperatures.

Samuel L. Perry Sr. Reflects on a 50-Year Career at Southern Research in Birmingham

By Sym Posey | The Birmingham Times

When Samuel L. Perry Sr. took a housekeeping job at Southern Research in Birmingham as a 21-year-old, he never imagined he’d spend his entire career there. That was 50 years ago.

“I had no idea that I would stay around here this long,” he said during an Employee Milestone Celebration at the City Club in downtown Birmingham. “Years just passed and passed, … and I liked doing the job. People weren’t constantly on you all the time, and you had good people that you worked with.”

Perry, 71, recalled learning about the job in 1974 in the newspaper. He was hired as part of the Southern Research housekeeping staff, he took a position in the maintenance department, got a commercial driver’s license, and started driving a truck for the organization in the 1980s.

Born and raised in Birmingham, Perry lived on the Southside until the age of 8, where, ironically, he lived near the Southern Research campus.

“I stayed maybe two blocks over, [and] there was a castle-like building over here on the Southside. I always admired that castle-like building. [My family] lived at 25th Street and 8th Avenue, right where the freeway exits off now. There were houses there, and that’s where I was born and raised until we moved,” recalled Perry, who is the oldest of five siblings.

The “castle-like building” was known as Quinlan Castle. It had been built in the 1920s and once served as an apartment building. The structure, which was on a corner of the Southern Research campus, had been deemed unsafe, too costly to repair, and unsuitable for modern lab space.

In 2021, the organization received a permit to demolish the building and erect in its place a new biotech building, where more than 100 scientists will eventually conduct research.

Perry attended A.H. Parker High School. He had a daughter when he was still in high school and earned GED diploma two years after dropping out of Parker. Perry now has three children—a daughter, Tyesa Slaughter, 50, and two sons, Samuel Perry Jr., 38, and Alexander Perry, 32—and he said his job at Southern Research helped him create a life for his family.

For years, Perry’s family has encouraged him to retire: “They’ve been telling me to retire, especially my oldest son. He’s been telling me I need to come home.”

Perry’s official last day is January 28, but he feels it will be difficult to say goodbye.

“I said I was going to do it on [January 28], but I might hang around a little bit longer if they let me. If I stay on after [that day], I’ll probably leave in June,” said Perry, who added that he wasn’t joking.

Besides working at a clothing store in high school, Southern Research has been Perry’s only job. A normal day for Perry starts at 5 a.m. and ends at 2 p.m. As the incinerator operator, Perry’s tasks include collecting items from four different docks and bringing them to the incinerator. Besides those tasks, Perry handles several housekeeping jobs around the facilities.

“We get there at about 5 in the morning. I usually come in, turn the incinerator on, and let it warm up. Then I get in the truck and pick up [items that need to be incinerated]. Whatever else they want me to do, I do,” he added.

In his free time, Perry used to play basketball to keep busy, but now, “All I do is go home and go to sleep,” he said jokingly.

Perry considers himself “a chill and laid-back guy,” who likes to keep to himself “and stay out of the mess.”

One memory he shared with The Birmingham Times is his love for traveling every year with his family for family reunion trips.

“One time we went to Las Vegas, and there were so many people. I would never go to Las Vegas again,” he said.

His favorite family reunion trip was a cruise to the Bahamas: “It was OK, but, you know, the thing I liked most was being on the ship. It was nice,” he recalled.

“I try to go to different places. We used to have family reunions and travel a lot every year, [but the COVID-19 pandemic] did a whole lot and stopped a lot of that stuff. We started back two years ago,” said Perry. “If suggested, I would go, but there are not a lot of places that I need to go. I’d rather be at home.”

Former Alabama Star Chris Goode Introduced as Head Football Coach at Miles College

Chris Goode acknowledged that football is nearly a family business.

The Town Creek, Alabama, native is part of the Goode family that produced gridiron stars at the University of Alabama and in the National Football League.

“All of us played,” said Goode, who was announced today as the new head football coach at Miles College. “My brother had a chance in the NFL. Antonio Langham (a first cousin and fellow University of Alabama standout) lived in our household since he was in the third or fourth grade. He went into the NFL. That’s just something we did.

“We’re a football family,” he continued. “My dad played football at Alabama State. He had a chance to go to the Chicago Bears but decided not to because I was baby then. I had to pay him back when I played, bringing him up to see me play. It was like he was playing in the NFL.”

Goode succeeds Sam Shade who left Miles after three seasons last week to take the head job at Alabama A&M University. All Shade did last year was lead the Golden Bears to the most wins in a season (10) while winning the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference championship, a first-ever win in the Division II playoffs and knock off Alabama State, an A&M rival.

So, there’s nowhere to go but up, right?

“They set the bar high, but I like that. I like that,” he said. “I know the goal and I know what I’m trying to reach. It’s always one of those things where you say, Hey, the bar is here. This is where you need to get, here and higher. So that’s one of the things I’m looking at.”

President Bobbie Knight acknowledged the Golden Bears’ stellar season of 2024, which earned accolades for players and former coach Shade.

“With great success often comes change and at Miles College, we embrace change as an opportunity to grow and build on our foundation of excellence as a pillar of this community and a beacon of opportunity,” Knight said. “Miles College is committed to nurturing not only athletic achievement but also academic and personal success for our scholar athletes.

“Coach Goode brings experience, a deep understanding of the game and a commitment to shaping young men into leaders on and off the field,” the president continued. “We are confident that Coach Goode’s leadership will inspire our athletes to not only uphold the proud tradition of Miles College football but also to push beyond boundaries, set new records and strive for excellence in every aspect of their lives.”

Jeffery Artis, chairman of the Miles College Sports Hall of Fame, was among a host of Golden Bears who assembled at the Williams Welcome and Admissions Center for the announcement.  He said he trusts Knight to have made a good choice in picking Goode just as she did in selecting Shade.

“When you trust your spouse, you don’t worry about what’s for dinner,”

Artis said. “You know it’s going to be good, right? When you have a president of President Knight’s caliber, you gotta go (with her).”

Goode said the offer to coach at Miles seemed divinely destined. He and his brothers played for Hazelwood High School where, like Miles, the school colors were purple and gold. And the Hazelwood teams were, like Miles, the Golden Bears.

“My dad (Clyde) was a principal and my mom (Vernell) was a teacher,” the coach recalled. “That’s one thing they did not play with, you coming home with bad grades. That’s one of the things I speak with kids right now about. You can’t stay here on campus if you don’t have the grades. That’s it. That’s what it is.”

Goode was asked if he will build his program from high school recruits or through the transfer portal. He said he’ll utilize both talent sources.

“I think we’ve done well recruiting heavily here in the Birmingham area and I think – not I think, I know – we will continue to do that,” the coach said. “But the portal is very important for any college team now because guys are leaving and coming every year. That’s an important factor.

“Me and the coaches we have talked about that,” Goode concluded. “What we’re doing is we’re looking for the best players out there, period, because, No. 1, we want to win.”

Miles College will open the 2025 season in Canton, Ohio, against Virginia Union in a Labor Day Classic.

Inside the Newly Opened Yo Mama’s Location in Downtown Birmingham

As Birmingham’s popular Yo Mama’s, a 10-year-old restaurant, prepared to open in a new and larger space downtown, co-owner Denise Peterson wore a T-shirt that says, “Imma Overcomer.”

Walking through the new 5,500-plus foot space, which is a huge shift from the 1,300 square foot original location, Denise, who runs the eatery with her daughter, Crystal, admits that one thing she had to overcome was the fear of growth.

“You can get content in where you are and end up staying there, but not be where God wants you to be because of fear,” said Denise, 68. “So, I had to overcome that part of it to say, ‘OK, we can make this happen.’”

On Monday, she and Crystal made big things happen as they served their popular chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, fish sandwiches, wings, burgers, chicken sandwiches and tacos in their new location at 2024 Fourth Ave. North. They will be open Monday – Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

“In this environment, there can be a lot of things that can come against you, but when you make it through it, you overcome it,” said Denise, a Birmingham native. “If it doesn’t take you down, then you are all right.”

When Denise and Crystal selected the new location for Yo Mama’s, the space was truly a blank canvas. There was no flooring. Just rocks. And overhead industrial lighting bounced off the cinderblock walls.

The space was harsh, but they worked to soften it up with Yo Mama’s feel-good brand. The new location’s cinderblocks were covered with half bricks to look like exposed brick walls. Sheetrock was also added in certain places. White, lime green, purple and earth tones were added to ignite appetites, and soft lighting was installed for a relaxed setting.

“We didn’t want to go to a bigger space and make it feel commercial,” Crystal said. “We still want you to feel at home, but in a bigger environment. We just have a bigger place for y’all to come and have fun.”

Here are a few things you can expect to find in the new location of the award-winning Yo Mama’s, which has appeared on Food Network, the Cooking Channel and Netflix. In 2022Eat This, Not That said Yo Mama’s had the best waffles in Alabama. In 2024, Southern Living listed it as one of the best 35 restaurants in Birmingham.

YoMamas moved into their new location at 2024 Fourth Ave. North. They will be open Monday-Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. (Provided)

Take a seat

  • The old Yo Mama’s had seating for 36 people. The new location will be able to accommodate up to 125. But for now, they have seating for about 96 people to give patrons more space during the cold and flu season. Counters and tall chairs are placed along the windows that face Fourth Avenue North to allow diners to eat with a view.
  • Two, large wooden tables from Southeastern Salvage were brought in to accommodate large groups interested in eating together or to simply promote community eating. Smaller tables can seat two and four people.

A room for every occasion

  • To meet the demand of requests for private brunches, baby showers, meetings and events, they have a private dining room for 24 to 30 people. It comes with a projector and a 100-foot screen. It costs $1,500 to reserve it for three hours. If the patron rents it and buys $800 worth of food from Yo Mama’s, the balance for the room would be $700. If a patron needs it for more than three hours, it’s $500 for each additional hour. To book the space, send emails to hello@yomamasrestaurant.com.
Customers can expect the same great menu at the new YoMamas location. (Provided)

Same food, same service

  • Consumers will find the same food at the new location. However, the “Meals of the Day,” such as Pork Chop Tuesday, won’t be available until starting the week of Jan. 13 in order to give staff time to adjust during the first week. All food is made from scratch, daily. They also offer catering and gluten-free food.

More staff on board

  • The old location had seven staff members. The new location will have 10, and they may add two more.

Saturday brunch will be back!

  • Right now, they will host Saturday brunch on the second and last Saturday of the month. And from March to August, they will do Saturday brunch every Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Go here for the brunch menu.

Elevated entertainment

  • TVs mounted on the walls, two menu monitors and an overhead audio system playing music were added to give the large space an “at-home” and intimate feeling just like you’d experience if dining at your mama’s house.

Parking

  • The restaurant is located on the first floor of a 1,300-space parking deck at Fourth Avenue North and Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard North. The first hour of parking in the deck is free After that, there is a charge. After the first hour, it will be $3 to park. And for each additional hour parked in the deck, it will be an extra $1 for every hour. So, if you are parked in the deck for 1 hour and 15 minutes, for example, it’s $3 to exit the deck. If you are parked in the deck for 2 hours and 30 minutes, for example, it’s $4, and so on.
  • There is usually a parking attendant in the exit booth or an automatic machine to take payments in cash, debit cards and credit cards.
  • “How many places in downtown Birmingham can you get good food, attached to a parking space and in a nice environment,” Crystal said.
  • Enter the deck off Fourth Avenue North and exit onto Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard North.

Sensory inclusive awareness

  • Just like what they did at their original location, Yo Mama’s will have Kulture City sensory sensitive tools for families with children in need. They have headphones for children if restaurant sounds are too loud. They also have sunglasses for children if the light coming through the windows is too bright.

Signs like these are placed throughout the restaurant to assist those with sensory sensitivities. (Photo by Chanda Temple)

Cooking on display

  • Patrons could see staff cooking at the old Yo Mama’s location, and the same will be true for the new location.

Pick up or place your order

  • At the counter, there is an area for pick-up orders and a space to make walk-in orders. There’s significant space from the counter to the door, that they can wrap a line instead of the line going out the door.

Cook like a pro

  • Yo Mama’s is featured in the latest cookbook by award-winning author Martie Duncan. In “The Alabama 100: Best Recipes, Restaurants & Road Trips,” Martie says that Yo Mama’s has some of the best fried chicken, cornbread and peach cobbler in the state. On page 192, readers can find the recipe for Yo Mama’s salmon croquettes, which is available during their Saturday brunch.
  • “This version may be better than your own mama’s, and if you let Mama Denise make them for you, you won’t have to do the dishes afterwards,” Martie writes in her book, which can be bought at Yo Mama’s for $34.95.

Popular with the people

  • Some well-known diners who’ve visited Yo Mama’s in the past include Supreme Court Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson; Stacey Abrams; Hillary Clinton; actor Omari Hardwick; NBA great Dominique Wilkins; and comedian/photographer Matt Mathews, who has 5.2 million followers on TikTok.
  • In July 2023, Birmingham Mayor Randall L. Woodfin asked followers on social media which Birmingham restaurants were their favorites, and Yo Mama’s was on repeat enough to make the Top 10 list.
  • In 2022, Yo Mama’s was the only Alabama restaurant to receive a $15,000 James Beard Foundation grant, through the organization’s Food and Beverage Investment Fund for Black and Indigenous Americans. Go here to read more about the award and how they give back to the community.

Savor This! Denise and Crystal Peterson have faced their share of challenges in wanting to find a bigger space for Yo Mama’s restaurant.

They looked at several places and were turned down. Or a place they thought ideal, had leak issues. The delays were disappointing, but they kept the faith and waited for something better.

While waiting, Denise held onto Romans 8:28: “And we know that in all things, God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”

During the process, Denise’s prayer was that if something was not for her, she was OK with that. But now that the new space has come, she knows she and Crystal will be ready to handle anything.

Yo Mama’s serves its popular chicken and waffles, shrimp and grits, fish sandwiches, wings, burgers, chicken sandwiches and tacos at 2024 Fourth Ave. North. They are open Monday – Friday from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.

‘[Her Dad] Arranged Everybody Around the Dinner Table and I Got Down on One Knee and Proposed’

0

BY JE’DON HOLLOWAY-TALLEY | Special to the Birmingham Times

RODNEY AND KONDA KEEBLER

Live: Gardendale

Married: Oct. 18, 2003

Met: Late January, 2002. Konda, age 22 at the time, first saw Rodney as he sat in the pulpit at Bethel Missionary Baptist Church in Pratt City.

“I looked up on the pulpit and he just really stood out to me. His praise and worship was so genuine, it was as if no one else was in the church. And he was really nice looking, and I felt convicted for sitting up in church lusting after this man,” Konda laughed. “I had just gotten out of a relationship and I had been praying for a man of God and for a serious relationship because I wanted to be married.”

Rodney, who had been divorced for a few years, was also looking for the woman he would this time spend the rest of his life with. “A mutual friend of mine called me one evening and told me he had someone he wanted to introduce me to, and he told me a lot about Konda and that he thought we’d be good together. I was reluctant because of the age gap [15 years her senior], but then remembered that I had just joked with my family over the holidays that my next wife was going to be a young woman. And here I was being introduced to one so I decided to give it a try and gave her a call,” Rodney recalled. “It turned out to be the greatest thing that ever happened to me.”

“And the funny thing is, while he was talking about having a younger wife, I was praying for an older and more mature husband,” Konda said.

First date: February 2002, at Logan’s Roadhouse in Irondale. Konda had driven up from Beloit [near Selma Ala.] and stayed with her sister for the weekend to be in town for their date, and Rodney picked her up from her sister’s home in Center Point.

“What I remember most about the date was when I picked her up and she came to the door, she was wearing the most beautiful amazing smile I had ever seen, it made me feel comfortable,” Rodney said. “That same smile still captivates me today.”

“The main thing I recall from the date was when the waitress came up to the table and said we looked like we were in love. And even though I had only recently met him, we were holding hands and smiling and I felt comfortable with him like I had been knowing him,” Konda recalled.

The turn: Rodney and Konda became exclusive in July 2002. “Things were moving so fast, that I broke it off for a few weeks because I needed some time to myself to make sure I was making a good decision and that this was real love and not just me getting caught up in my feelings,” Konda said.

“By that June, I knew it was serious. So serious that I had a conversation with my grown kids to let them know that I was getting serious with a younger woman … I wanted to know how they felt about it because she was not much older than them. But they were fine, they were like, ‘hey dad, if you’re happy we’re happy,’ and that was all I needed,” Rodney said.

The proposal: Thanksgiving Day 2002, at Konda’s parents’ home in Beloit. “I called her dad outside and talked to him first and asked his permission to marry his daughter and he said no problem. So he arranged everybody around the dinner table later that evening and I got down on one knee and proposed in front of her family,” Rodney said.

“We had previously discussed getting engaged around Christmas and it wasn’t Christmas so I was really shocked,” Konda laughed. “I had no clue, and I was excited and a little nervous, but very happy to say ‘yes’.”

Rodney and Konda Keebler met in 2002 at Bethel Missionary Church in Pratt City. The couple married in 2003. (Provided Photos)

The wedding: At Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Selma, officiated by Dr. Charles Lett, of Aimwell Missionary Baptist Church in Hazen, Alabama. Their wedding colors were gold and cream.

Most memorable for the bride was the reception, held at the Selma Convention Center. “After we did our first dance, it was time for the dance with my daddy, and it was special because I was the first of my siblings to get married [she is one of five], and having him walk me down the aisle and then to dance our first dance was memorable for me,” said Konda.

Most memorable for the groom was sharing the day with his children. “Two of my kids [son, Keenan, then 15, and daughter, Ashley, then 16] were in the wedding and just to have them there made it special for me,” said Rodney.

They honeymooned on a cruise to the Bahamas. “My husband stubbed his toe in the ocean on a big rock, and he had to go to the infirmary, but I nursed him back to health because after we saw the costs we said, no thank you, we got it” Konda laughed. “I wrapped it up, elevated it and gave him some pain medicine.”

“And I woke up in the middle of the night and saw Konda dancing on the tv,” Rodney said. “She had gone to the dance hall on the ship, and they streamed it on a channel that you could view from your room, and that was funny to me.”

Words of wisdom: “Remember what made you fall in love from the start, keep God first, and be forgiving,” Rodney said.

“Pray about your spouse before you get married. Talk to God and be specific about what it is that you desire to have in a mate. And make Christ the foundation of your marriage. Communication is important, listening to each other and being able to compromise because you’re not always going to be able to have your way so seeing your partner’s perspective is important,” said Konda.

Happily ever after: The Keebler’s attend Love Fellowship Christian Center in Adamsville, where they both serve as ministers. They are a blended family with six children, three of which are adults: Keelon, Ashley, and Keenon, and three remain in the home; Matthew, 17, Olivia, 10, and Allison, 4, and “at last count”, 8 grandchildren, said Rodney.

Konda, 45, is a Beloit, Alabama, [Dallas County] native, and Keith High School [Orrville, Alabama] grad. She attended Faulkner University in Montgomery where she earned a B.S. in human resource management, and a master of science in management, the University of Alabama, where she earned a bachelor of science (BSN) in nursing, and the University of Alabama at Birmingham where she received a Doctorate of Nursing Practice. Konda works as an assistant professor of undergraduate nursing at Samford University and is a certified family nurse practitioner at Good Samaritan Clinic in Northport.

Rodney, 60, is a Titusville native, and A.H. Parker High School grad. He retired as a pastor from Evening Star Missionary Baptist Church in Edgewater, Alabama, in 2023 after 24 years of ministry.

The Water Works Board of the City of Birmingham (“BWWB”) has adopted a voluntary Historically Underutilized Business (“HUB”) Program designed to encourage the participation of HUB firms in construction projects. To that end, the BWWB will never exclude any firm from participation in, deny any person benefits of, or otherwise discriminate in connection with the award and performance of BWWB contracts based on racial, gender, social, or economic status.
It is the intent of the BWWB to foster competition among contractors, suppliers and vendors that will result in better quality and more economical services for the BWWB. Under this program, the BWWB has established a goal of 30% participation of HUB firms for services required for BWWB construction projects. The BWWB’s stated goal will not be the determining factor in construction contract awards; rather bidders must demonstrate compliance with the Good Faith Efforts, more particularly outlined in the HUB Program, toward meeting said goal.
Failure on the part of a bidder to fully submit the information required herein may be considered by the BWWB in evaluating whether the bidder is responsive to bid requirements.

Each Prospective Bidder must complete, as a condition for the award of any Contract by The Water Works Board of the City of Birmingham, the Certification Regarding Debarment in Section 00 20 10.  The Certification must be complete in its entirety and must be included with the Prospective Bidder’s Bid (NO EXCEPTIONS).
The legislature of Alabama Act 2013-205 grants the Alabama Department of Revenue (ADOR) the authority to issue certificates of exemption from sales and use taxes for construction projects for certain governmental agencies. Pursuant to Act 2013-205, Section 1(g) the Contractor accounts for the sales tax not included in the Bid Form by submitting an Accounting of Sales Tax-Attachment to BWWB Bid Form. Failure to provide an accounting of sales tax shall render the bid non-responsive. Other than determining responsiveness, sales tax accounting shall not affect the bid pricing nor be considered in the determination of the lowest responsible and responsive bidder. After Notice of Award, Contractor and Subcontractor licensed by the State Licensing Board for General Contractors must comply with ADOR requirements for making an application for qualification of the exemption and are responsible for ADOR reporting requirements for the duration of the project.
If a Contract is to be awarded, it will be awarded to the Bidder with the best price on the best terms for the OWNER, who has neither been disqualified nor rejected pursuant to these Contract Documents, and whose Bid based on an evaluation by the OWNER indicates that the award will be in the best interest of the Project and will result in the lowest overall cost to the OWNER for completion of the project. If a Contract is to be awarded, it will be awarded within 90 calendar days after the day of the opening of bids.

UAB’s Impact in Birmingham During 2024 — And What’s Ahead For 2025

0
Drone photo of the exterior of the new Altec/Styslinger Genomic Medicine and Data Sciences Building, October 2024.

By Brianna Hoge | www.uab.edu

This is an excerpt from an article on UAB’s achievements that took place on campus, in Birmingham and across the state of Alabama.

In 2024, the University of Alabama at Birmingham reached unprecedented heights in growth and impact, aligning with its strategic plan, Forging Ahead, to positively transform lives across Alabama and beyond through education, research, innovation and economic development, community engagement, and patient care.

UAB is treating more patients than ever before, conducting transformative research that enhances health, quality of life and economic development and continually improving the health and revitalization of neighborhoods. The university also provided educational opportunities to almost 21,000 students this past fall, helping to build the next generation of leaders in business, entrepreneurship, engineering, health care, public health, education, liberal arts, sciences and other fields.

Here are some of the remarkable achievements that took place in Birmingham — and a glance at what is ahead in 2025.

In JanuaryUAB Sports and Exercise Medicine became the official sports medicine provider for Lawson State Community College.

Live HealthSmart Alabama, an initiative of UAB, completed community improvements in the East Lake neighborhood of Birmingham and held a ribbon-cutting May 22.

Also in May, UAB Medicine celebrated the relocation and expansion of services of its primary care clinic in the Birmingham area with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the new clinic location in Lee Branch. The staff at UAB Medicine Lee Branch Primary and Specialty Care sees adult patients for a wide range of non-emergency medical conditions.

The UAB Department of Pediatrics partnered with Birmingham City Schools during the spring semester to expand the UAB Mini Medical School. The program provides a series of virtual and in-person experiences to increase middle school students’ exposure to science, technology, engineering and math careers, with a particular focus on health care.

This spring, UAB partnered with Bama Wellness Advocacy to launch a revolutionary nutrition program for athletes in Birmingham City Schools. The new program emphasizes the significance of proper nutrition, as well as the importance of self-wellness factors such as sleep, ultimately aiming to enhance the overall performance and well-being of student-athletes.

The Birmingham Museum of Art (BMA) will host a panel discussion Thursday, January 9, on artist John Rhoden’s Birmingham roots.

The event is free and open to the public.

The museum’s current exhibition, Determined to Be: The Sculpture of John Rhoden is on view through April, and offers a comprehensive look at Rhoden’s career, showcasing over 50 works that span his journey as an artist. From intimate studies to monumental public sculptures, the exhibition celebrates Rhoden’s legacy as a groundbreaking sculptor and his impact on the art world.

Born and raised in Birmingham, Rhoden (1916–2001) was an accomplished twentieth-century African American sculptor. This exhibition presents the first comprehensive retrospective of his artwork.

The free program will chronicle his journey beginning with his formative years in Birmingham’s Smithfield neighborhood, his education at A.H. Parker High School, and his eventual return to the city as an internationally celebrated sculptor. The program will also include insights into Rhoden’s artistic and personal milestones, from his early exposure to sculpture to the works he created in Birmingham, including his tribute to Civil Rights icon the Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth.

Panelists include Dr. Sylvea Hollis, historian and author of the exhibition catalogue, who will delve into Rhoden’s roots in the Smithfield community; Dr. Penny Seals, UAB professor, who will explore the educational landscape of Parker High School during the 1930s; Wayne Coleman, Head of Archives at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, who will discuss Rhoden’s sculpture honoring Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth; and Dr. Brittany Webb, exhibition curator from the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts, who will share insights on Rhoden’s early sculptural training and his connection to Legion Field.

In addition, attendees will receive a special map highlighting key Birmingham locations associated with Rhoden’s life and work, encouraging continued exploration of his legacy throughout the city.

With a sculptural sensibility defined by his extensive world travels, sensualism, and a breadth of visual influences, Rhoden worked in a style that was ahead of his time. Featuring approximately 50 sculptures in bronze, wood, and stone, the exhibition illustrates the visual and technical mastery of this award-winning artist.

Rhoden attended Industrial High School (now A. H. Parker High School) before attending Talladega College. In 1938, Rhoden moved to New York City where he studied at Columbia University and the New School for Social Research before launching into a sculpture career that took him around the world, resulting in major public commissions throughout the United States and in Birmingham, where his sculpture of the Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth stands outside the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute.

BMA presented Rhoden’s first solo museum exhibition in 1985. A group of works featured in the exhibition will also remain in the permanent collection of the museum, the first sculptures by Rhoden to join the museum’s collection. This gift will ensure that Rhoden’s legacy remains celebrated in his hometown art museum in perpetuity.
