INSIDE THE STATEHOUSE

0

Lurleen Wallace’s death in May of 1968, Lt. Governor Albert Brewer moved up to Governor. Brewer was no novice to state government. He came to the legislature from Morgan County at a very early age and rose quickly to become Speaker of the House during his second term. He won the 1966 Lt. Governor’s race against two state senators without a runoff.

Brewer was smart and articulate with a charming smile and winning personality. He had lots of friends in the legislature and seemed to have very few enemies. Brewer also had a good grasp of state politics. He smoothly took the reigns of state government and began to make improvements. His popularity and relationships with his fellow legislators gave his programs easy sailing. Brewer became a working governor.

People throughout the state took notice of Brewer’s effectiveness as governor. He showed signs of being the progressive New South Governor, for whom editorialists in the state yearned. Wallace’s race baiting had given Alabama an image problem and other southern states were attracting the new technology industries. Terry Sanford in North Carolina brought the Tar Heel State up the economic ladder with his progressive approach. Other southern states had also elected governors with less race rhetoric and more substantive economic and educational programs. Brewer fit that mold.

Soon after Lurleen’s death in 1968 Wallace made his first foray into national politics running as a third-party candidate for president. He was absent from the state most of the year focusing on his presidential race. Wallace ran well, capturing the popular votes of Alabama and several other Deep South states as the segregationist, anti-Civil Rights candidate. Wallace became obsessed with being a national candidate. After the 1968 race and well into 1969, he traveled the country making speeches.

Wallace and Brewer had been allies. Brewer was Wallace’s choice for Speaker of the House in 1962 and Lt. Governor in 1966 and they appeared to still be on good terms. Wallace and Brewer met in late 1969 to discuss the 1970 Governor’s race. Brewer left the meeting saying that Wallace had given his word that he was not interested in running for governor in 1970. Nobody but Wallace and Brewer will know for sure what was said or promised that day. Soon after their meeting, Brewer committed to the 1970 Governor’s race and began running a serious campaign while Wallace appeared to sit on the sideline. It was not until early 1970 that Wallace decided to run. Thus, the epic battle was on that many political observers point to as the greatest governor’s race of this century.

Brewer hit Wallace with what I think was one of the best messages ever used: “Alabama needs a full-time governor.” Most Alabamians agreed with Wallace’s anti-government segregationist appeal but also knew he had done very little hands on governing because he was away from the state campaigning all the time. Brewer’s full-time governor billboards were all over the state on all interstates and even on two lane roads. Brewer built a coalition never put together since. It was made up of higher income whites and Black voters. The Blacks in Alabama voted for the first time four years earlier in 1966. By this time the Black vote had grown to 25 percent of the total vote and was solidly in Brewer’s corner.

Brewer rode this coalition to finish first in the primary. Wallace was second but a runoff was necessary because of a large vote received by Dothan businessman Charles Woods. The four week primary runoff battle became fierce and legendary. Wallace’s political life was on the line so he pulled out all the stops. Wallace worked at a feverish pace, making 18 to 20 speeches a day begging Alabamians to put him back in the Governor’s office saying, “You elect me governor and I will be a full-time governor.” He knew Brewer had hurt him on that issue so he promised never to run for president again. Then he played the race card in the most openly racist ads ever shown on television. The ads showed results of boxes in Black Belt towns like Tuskegee and Selma where Brewer received 400 votes to Wallace’s 10. Then the ad would boldly say, “Do you want the Black block vote electing your governor?”

It worked for Wallace. People came to the polls like never before. He came from behind and pulled out a victory over

Brewer. Wallace’s political life had been revived. He was on a plane to Wisconsin the next day running for president. A crazed gunman shot him in a Maryland suburban parking lot in 1972. Brewer began a law practice in Montgomery.

See you next week.

Beyonce, Jay Z’s ‘On the Run’ Tour Banks $100 Million

0

Now that the tour is over…the numbers are in.

Despite messy breakup rumors hovering over Beyonce and Jay Z’s On the Run trek, the couple will walk away with some serious cash after the closing show in San Francisco. According to Billboard.com, the nearly two-month nationwide stadium tour grossed more than $100 million in ticket sales. (As previously reported, they will perform again in Paris on Sept. 12 and 13, with those shows being filmed for an upcoming HBO special.)

Omar Al-Joulani, vice-president of North American touring for Live Nation, said the tour sold at more than 90 percent capacity, disproving earlier rumors of struggling ticket sales. Al-Joulani declined to comment on speculation about the state of the couple’s six-year marriage, saying he hasn’t read anything about it, but said the success of the tour means “everybody’s winning.”

Indeed, the show takes in more than $5.2 million per night, and the “Drunk in Love” duo fill nearly 45,000 seats a performance, on average.

“These shows sold tremendously well at the end,” said Al-Joulani, noting that ticket sales typically spiked in the days just preceding a show. “It was a very successful tour, and we’re pleased to have that big gross number at the end.”

The tour also stands out for how quickly it came together – an extra-impressive feat considering the pair were on the road for much of last year. Most shows are planned a year or more in advance, but Al-Joulani said this one “came together quite quickly, around mid-March. By April, we had everything together.” He said the popularity of the couple demanded the production be “epic,” and elements of the live show included a moving high-def screen, pyrotechnics and hydraulic lifts. Buzz from the couple’s high-concept trailer for the tour also helped to generate interest, Al-Joulani said.

However, the success of the tour ultimately came down to the live performances, which Al-Joulani said the duo dazzlingly delivered. “These events are driven by content and demand, and being dramatic and creative and putting out content people want to see,” he said. “The two of them are as about creative as you can get, and it was pretty brilliant to watch them work. The show itself is spectacular.”

Salon Manicures Preferred

0

When Freud famously wondered what women want, he should have checked in the nail salon. According to a recent Harris Interactive survey:

• 91 percent of women feel better after visiting one

• More than half of women have been disappointed with do-it-yourself results

A salon visit ensures a superior service and an opportunity for comfort and community. That’s why many women like to take time to pamper themselves and leave the work to the pros.

What’s more, women who love the sustainability of a long-wear manicure can now rest easy when it comes to UV safety. Dr. John Dowdy and Dr. Robert Sayre recently reported that UV lamps are safer than natural sunlight. In addition, the back of the hand requires four times the amount of UV exposure than the cheeks, chest or abdomen in order to cause sun damage. This makes it nearly impossible to suffer from unsafe exposure during a UV manicure.

Many women, relieved by these findings, head straight to the salon for a CND Shellac manicure. Since not all service is created equal, they look for the CND Shellac Pro Certification in the salon window.

Protecting Children From Asthma

0

(NAPS) While, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), asthma causes children to miss 11 million school days a year, and African-American and Hispanic children are disproportionately affected, there are ways to manage your child’s asthma and help prevent attacks before they happen. That’s a good thing, considering 7 million children have asthma and most will have an attack this year.

Managing your child’s indoor environment is an important step in reducing exposure to the things that can trigger asthma attacks. Since asthma varies from person to person, you and your doctor should determine a plan to reduce the triggers that most affect your child. Some of the most common asthma triggers are:

Tobacco Smoke – Don’t allow smoking in your home or around your children. Asthma can be triggered by the smoke from a cigarette, pipe or cigar or the smoke exhaled by the smoker.

Pests and Dust Mites – Pests are attracted by food and crumbs, so vacuum often and keep food in sealed containers. Dust mites are too small to be seen but are found in every home. They live in mattresses, pillows, carpets, fabric-covered furniture, bedcovers, clothes and stuffed toys. Be sure to wash sheets and blankets once a week in hot water. Choose washable stuffed toys. Wash the toys often in hot water and dry thoroughly. Cover mattresses and pillows in dust-proof zipped covers.

Mold – Molds grow on damp materials. The key to mold control is water and moisture control. If mold control is a problem in your home, clean up the mold and get rid of excess water or moisture. Wash off hard surfaces and dry completely.

Help At Hand

Fortunately, for many children with asthma, a charming group of puppets is lending a hand to an effort to educate parents about asthma triggers. Supported by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the Ad Council, “The Breathe Easies”— the world’s first asthma-centric rock band — is comprised of puppet characters that deliver messages about asthma triggers in songs written and recorded by popular singer-songwriter Parry Gripp.“Too many Americans suffer from asthma, spending their time at doctor visits and hospitals instead of at school, work and play,” said Janet McCabe, acting assistant administrator for EPA’s Office of Air and Radiation. “Educating children and parents about ways to avoid asthma triggers is an important step in helping control this disease.” Adds Peggy Conlon, president and CEO of the Ad Council: “This campaign is a wonderful and entertaining continuation of our efforts with EPA to help reduce asthma attacks in children.”

Faith Evans Signs New Deal, New Album on the Way

0

Faith Evans parlayed her reality TV stint into a new chapter in her recording career. It was announced today that she will release her eighth studio album, Incomparable, via a new deal with BMG, says The Hollywood Reporter. The Grammy-winning singer and producer behind R&B Divas: Atlanta who also appeared in a few episodes during the show’s first season, has already released her first single from the project “I Deserve It” featuring Missy Elliott and Sharaya J. Although she and Brownstone singer Nicci Gilbert were co-creators of the popular TV One reality show, neither is still involved creatively.

“The original goal of us being positive and showing that we can come together, which the first season very much reflected,” Evans told S2s.com. But as is the norm on reality TV shows, producers wanted more conflict, something Evans wasn’t interested in being a part of. “The person we went into business with on the production side kinda started to feel like it was their thing… I just felt like this isn’t what I signed up for. Once our creative input wasn’t being acknowledged or respected, I knew it was time to go.”

Evans, who was once married to The Notorious B.I.G. and has a son, Christopher, Jr. with him, signed a worldwide exclusive publishing deal and BMG Artists Services deal with BMG Chrysalis U.S. Of the seven albums she’s already released, three have gone platinum and one has gone gold. BMB Artist Services has released records from about 80 artists including Joe and The Backstreet Boys. “I am truly proud to join the forces of my imprint, Prolific Music Group, with BMG to present my next project, Incomparable,” Evans said in a statement. “I look forward to a great partnership, as we are all very excited about this amazing collection of timeless R&B music.”
