2014 Scion tC

0

Cheryl Autoby Cheryl Eldridge and Wire reports

Are you looking for an automobile that is small but has so much to offer? Scion’s 2014 tC is a total package that has everything that a driver needs.
The 2014 Scion tC’s roomy cabin, generous features list and sharp styling make it a solid pick for people desiring a sporty, yet practical, entry-level coupe.
My two-door blue streak metallic tester had aggressive new styling, enhanced driving syndetics and touch screen audio standard.
The 2014 Scion tC is a compact, five-passenger hatchback coupe offered in a base trim level and a special edition “10 Series.”
Standard features include 18-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, cruise control, full power accessories, a panoramic sunroof, a height-adjustable driver seat, a leather-trimmed tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, reclining and folding 60/40-split rear seats, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and an eight-speaker Pioneer sound system with a 6.1-inch touchscreen display, a CD player, HD radio, an auxiliary audio jack and an iPod/USB interface.
The limited-production 10 Series adds unique silver paint, 18-inch dark-finished alloy wheels, projector beam headlamps, illuminated badges, LED accent lighting, an illuminated “Scion” center console panel and premium stitching on the seats and steering wheel.
A wide section of dealer-sourced accessories is also available, including 19-inch wheels, performance parts for the suspension and drivetrain, and an upgraded BeSpoke touchscreen audio system. The BeSpoke system includes navigation functionality and smartphone Aha app integration for connected audio and social media services.
Powertrain and Performance for my tester included front-wheel-drive. The 2014 Scion tC has a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder engine that generates 179 horsepower and 173 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed manual transmission comes standard, while a six-speed automatic – now with a rev-matched downshift feature – is optional.
In Edmunds performance testing, a tC with a manual transmission covered zero to 60 mph in 7.3 seconds, which is respectably quick for this class of car.
The tC returns EPA-estimated fuel economy of 23 city/31 highway and 26 combined mpg regardless of transmission. These are respectable numbers, but many competitors do better.
Standard safety features on the 2014 Scion tC include stability and traction control, antilock brakes, front knee airbags, front side airbags, side curtain airbags and active front headrests. In Edmunds.com brake testing, the tC stopped from 60 mph in 123 feet, an average distance among its class.
In government crash testing, the tC received five out of five stars for overall crash protection, with four stars for frontal-impact protection and five stars for side-impact protection. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety crash testing, the tC earned the highest score of “Good” in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side impact and roof-strength tests.
Like its updated outward appearance, the tC has an interior design that evokes speed and sport. From the thick, flat-bottom steering wheel, cradling seat bolsters, and controls canted toward the driver, the tC strives for a high-performance sports car feel. These elements are slightly contrived, but they work if your expectations are in line with the Scion’s affordable price tag.
From the standpoint of practicality, the tC is one of your better choices. The rear seats have above-average legroom, and getting in and out of the back is pretty easy by coupe standards. Behind the rear seats the tC can hold up to 14.7 cubic feet of luggage, while folding the rear seat yields additional cargo space. The hatchback body style also means it’s easier to load bulky items in the tC than it is for traditional coupes like the Civic or Hyundai Elantra.
In years past, Scions stood out for their above-average sound systems, but for 2014 the playing field is much more level. That said, the optional BeSpoke audio system is worth the money considering that it provides a navigation system and smartphone integration that connects Internet radio, Yelp and other popular social media applications.
Around city streets, the tC is entertaining to drive, and the ride quality is pretty smooth. In a nutshell, the tC was entertaining and for $23,112, you get more than you pay for.
Until next week, drive safe, buckle up, and please don’t text and drive, it’s the law.

Back Pain and Massage

BACK PAINHow Bodywork Can Help
by Herbert Gooden

Whether it’s a pulled muscle from just bending or an afternoon basketball game, or a long-term pain caused by injury, most of us will come to know the beast that is called back pain. In fact, when it comes to low-back pain specifically, researchers say that 70-85 percent of the population will experience it at some point in their lives.
Causes of Pain – Experts say the cause of back pain can be the result of several factors. High on the list is stress. When our body is stressed, we literally begin to pull inward: the shoulders roll forward and move up to the ears, the neck disappears, and the back tightens in the new posture. It’s an armoring effect. That protective mode, with the muscles in flex, can even result in visceral problems, where the pain also affects internal organs.
In addition to stress, poor posture, bad ergonomics, lack of exercise, arthritis, osteoporosis, a sedentary lifestyle, overexertion, pregnancy, kidney stones, fibromyalgia, excess weight, and more can contribute to pain.
Body mechanics is the main cause of most back pain that I see in my practice. “It’s mechanics, including repetitive use and ignorance about preventative postures, and neglect by employers and employees to provide rest and recovery.” The past also plays a part. “Old injuries and traumatic events, left untreated and unresolved, seem to dictate where stress lands in the back as well.”
Massage Offers Hope –Those who suffer with back pain know there are no easy answers for chasing the pain away. Research has shown that massage can be a great friend to the back-pain sufferer.
Massage therapists have long treated low-back pain safely and effectively. They have done so less expensively and less invasively than is possible with other treatments.
In fact, a study by the Group Health Research Institute in Seattle found that massage was more effective at treating low-back pain than medication. Patients who received massage once a week for 10 weeks were more likely to report that their back pain had improved, and improvements were still present six months after the study. Other research from the University Of Miami School Of Medicine and the Touch Research Institute showed that massage can decrease stress and long-term pain, improve sleep and range of motion, and help lower the incidence of depression and anxiety that often accompanies back pain.
Getting on a regular massage schedule, however, can really help clients manage the back pain. When they go past their normally scheduled appointment, “their bodies know it’s time to get a massage again.”
Whether it’s just helping clients get through the day, or reminding the stressed-out office worker to breathe, massage can play an important part in back pain relief.
The benefits of massage for back pain depend on the primary cause of the pain. If it is predominantly muscular pain, then massage has a great deal to offer in reducing pain associated with chronic muscle tightness, spasms, myofascial trigger points, or those types of problems.
Massage Works – When it comes to back pain, there are a lot of options out there. Ultimately, massage, and its myriad benefits, might be a viable answer. Massage can work wonders. Massage can help relax the body, relax the psyche, and improve a client’s range of motion and circulation to the affected tissues. Not only can massage help directly with the pain, but it can also make life a little easier, too. Massage lets you tap into the parasympathetic system, and tap into all the good hormones that help you sleep better and help you handle stressors along the way. All of that helps in building a healthier back and a happier you.
Benefits of Massage – From stress relief to skin rejuvenation, the benefits of massage are extensive. When it comes to managing back pain, however, there are some specific benefits touch therapy can offer:

• Improved circulation. With increased circulation comes faster recovery
time for sore, overworked muscle tissues.
• Increased release of endorphins. The prevalence of these natural
painkillers is boosted every time you have a massage. This can only help
in managing pain.
• Improved movement. Range of motion and flexibility both get a boost
with massage.
• Increased relaxation. When you relax, your muscles relax, thereby
calming the pain.

VALUE OF THE SOUL
What is your price for your soul? How much value do you place on your soul and is it for sale? You may be thinking, ‘value’- ‘sale’– what is the soul and can I sell it, if I could. Well, the soul is not a commodity that you are free to sell to anyone, but God has given it to you to live as you please. The soul is your eternal spirit-man. It is you that will live for eternity. You will have an everlasting life with Jesus or with your enemy. The choice is yours; your life is yours; it is a gift from God. Yes, and you can sell your soul, and you no doubt have already, but to whom, is the question. Everyone has freedom to choose everlasting life with Jesus or spend eternity with the enemy of his soul. Now have you made your choice? Remember, your choice determines how well you value your ‘soul.’
You may see where Scripture ask you a profound question in regards to the value of your soul for it says in, Matthew 16:26, “What shall it profit a man if he shall gain the whole world, and lose his own soul or what shall a man give in exchange for his soul?” There is not anything in this world to compare with the value of the soul. The soul is your everlasting life; it is the knowledgeable you, and you will know at the end of this life on earth whether you are in the presence of the Lord or whether you are in your enemy’s kingdom, because if you are with your enemy, you will be burning in Hell’s fire forever and eternity. If you are with Jesus, you will be in a most glorious city made with pure gold. [Revelation 21:9-27]
Now, what will you give in exchange for your soul to spend eternity in the City of God? Is there anything you will give? I feel certain there is nothing this world can afford better than spending eternity with Jesus.
You may see in Scripture a parable that says the man was a “rich fool.” The man misplaced the value of his soul and he did not prepare for his eternal protection. You see your soul is your eternal spirit-man; it is you, and you will know you are where you are, when you get there, and that is after this life on earth. Your everlasting well-being depends on the choice you make while here on earth. The rich fool placed all his worth on material things in this life, and he felt secure in them. Luke 12:13-21 shows you the contrast between what is durable and what is not. His plan was to build bigger and better to store all his goods so he could be merry for years to come, but God said to him, “you fool”, your soul is required this night. He never thought about his life was not his. God gave him his life and entrusted him to see how well he would live it.  You see you are not living unless you are living for Jesus, because you are not your own. God made you before He made the world.  DO YOU KNOW WHEN THAT WAS?
How wonderful it is to have a choice to choose Jesus and live for Him here and now. This makes life worth living in this world.

An Unforgettable Ride

Rev. Reid
Rev. Reid

John 8: 6-

In Luke 9: 23-24, Jesus gave clear instructions concerning becoming one of His followers. He said, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it.” This is a hard saying but a clear path to God. I have heard a short story of a little boy name Ayodele (A-YO-DAILY). His mother had given him this Nigerian name because it meant “Joy (Ayo) has arrived home.” Ayodele was 3-years-old. Like most kids his age, he loved rides. It didn’t matter what the vehicle was as long as it carried him. He had heard that Jesus had come to Jerusalem riding a donkey. He had never seen a donkey but he wondered what it be like to ride one. When it was Palm Sunday in his church, he couldn’t wait to go to attend and find out what Palm Sunday was and how it related to riding a donkey. But sadly, Ayodele came down with the chickenpox. His parents hired a baby-sitter to take care of him while they went to church. When his mother arrived home she was h

olding palm leaves. Ayodele asked, “What are the leaves for Mommy?” She replied, “When Jesus walked through the town, people waved palm leaves at Him in respect.” Ayodele looked upset and said, “Wouldn’t ya know it? The first day I’m not in church, Jesus shows up on a real cool ride and I missed IT!” This is a simple event in the life of a child but sometimes we forget the importance of the little things in life especially the feeling of an unforgettable ride. To have Christ in our life is to experience an unforgettable ride.  To have this unforgettable ride will require that we do three things: One, deny ourselves and take up our cross daily. Two, follow in the footsteps of Jesus and three, save our spiritual lives.
Here is the problem. We fail to realize that we too must humbly ride into the Jerusalem and Temples of our life in preparation for our own cross and resurrection. If we miss the meaning of what Jesus did in His ride into Jerusalem and His visit to the temple prior to His crucifixion, death and resurrection, we will let pass by our resurrection and miss our unforgettable ride.
Here are three ways not to miss it.
First, by denying ourselves, our ego and taking up our cross daily. Again Jesus said, “If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily.” These are the first disciplines of Jesus. Deny self (ego) and humbly (on a donkey) take up our cross (symbol of death) daily! Surrender to God Daily (a million times), give up ego, personality, things and die (be born again) until a breakthrough comes (dawning of illumination).
Second, we experience an extraordinary ride by following Jesus into the Jerusalem and temples of our lives. Again, Jesus said, “let them deny themselves and take up their cross daily and FOLLOW ME.”  Jesus entered Jerusalem knowing that He would attract the enmity and revulsion of the Chief Priest, Scribes and Pharisees; yet, He had to “Ride On.” They were upset that the people were crying out, “Hosanna” (save and deliver us we pray) to Jesus instead of them. When we follow Jesus we will have to “Ride On” as well. Finally, we experience the ultimate ride by allowing Jesus to help us save our own life. Christ said, “For those who want to save their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will save it.” Jesus’ ride into Jerusalem was a ride of physical death but spiritual life. Eternal Life with God! He knew what was ahead. Crucifixion and death! But He also knew the rewards. He knew obedience to God unto death and resurrection would allow us to experience His amazing trip! This is the miraculous journey of our salvation. Death of our ego (old self) bridged by Christ as the mediator of our death. Jesus is our guide to the new birth of our spirit. This new existence leads to eternal life. It is astounding to think that our spiritual destiny, the most treasured trip we will ever take is within our own power to choose.

No More Time To Waste

Life Dreams“Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour in which the Son of Man is coming. Matthew 25:13

Last month the lives of two young men suddenly came to an end. One was 29 years old and had a flourishing career in acting. It is reported that Lee Thompson Young committed suicide in spite of the fact that he was very attractive, currently starring on a successful television series and on the surface appeared to have it all together. The second was a 16 year old high school football player that broke his neck during a routine play at football practice. DeAntre Turman was already being recruited by big colleges and it’s reported that he was offered a full scholarship by the University of Kentucky. No one could have predicted either of these deaths and for a long time no one will understand why they happened.

”But the hour is coming, and now is, when the true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and truth; for the Father is seeking such to worship Him. John 4:23

Since you have your breath and at this moment the gift of life, why not spend it worshipping God. Tomorrow isn’t promised and in spite of your plans, you aren’t guaranteed to carry them out. Don’t waste another minute wondering if you should trust God with your life, make the decision to give it to Him today. If you already have but aren’t enjoying the benefits of Him being your Lord and Savior, it’s collection time. Take advantage of the peace, joy, love, grace, mercy and favor of the Lord and ENJOY YOUR LIFE!

Does it stink like rotten meat?
