Book Vending Machine Installed at Bessemer Family Court

The University of Alabama at Birmingham School of Education has partnered with the Children’s Policy Council of Jefferson County to provide the CPC’s second children’s book vending machine at Bessemer Family Court.

The children’s book vending machine is located on the second-floor family waiting area and provides age-appropriate books at no cost to families. UAB professors and teacher candidates provide guidance on the selection of book titles along with additional family resources to support reading.

“Bessemer was the natural choice for a second vending machine since the Bessemer division is the only other Family Court in Jefferson County,” said Cora Causey, Ph.D., assistant professor of early childhood education in the UAB School of Education and Human Sciences. “We are grateful Commissioner Sheila Tyson was generous in providing the support and that Bessemer Family Court Judge Lorraine Pringle is helping get books in children’s hands. Ensuring that the first children’s book vending machine project launched smoothly was important.”

To date, the first book vending machine at Jefferson County Family Court has provided just shy of 2,000 books to children. The funds were pledged at the initial ribbon-cutting a year ago by Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson. Jeanine Hunt Hilliard, Family Court presiding judge continues to champion this project. CPC Executive Director Shelly Mize, Ph.D., and her office secured book grant funding and create effective processes.

“Since the ribbon-cutting for the first children’s book vending machine, our fundraising efforts have been building momentum,” Mize said. “Public and private donations and grants have been awarded. This has forged new partnerships and provided us with the necessary resources to help sustain both machines.”

According to the United States Department of Education, many children from under-resourced settings enter school behind their peers in reading. This gap only widens over the summer, as these children are less likely to have access to books and other reading materials at home. As a result, they fall behind by an average of two months each summer.

“The children’s book vending machine is an excellent example of community collaboration to support grade-level reading,” Mize said. “Caregivers at Family Court can sign up for a free token, and children can use the token to select a book from the vending machine to take home.”

This endeavor will help to build in-home libraries while increasing reading engagement and fighting summer learning loss.

“It has been exciting to see family members reading to their young children and older children reading to younger children,” Causey said. “The initial project was aimed at toddlers through third-grade children, focusing on helping children read at grade level by the end of third grade. However, court staff have not turned away any child who has asked for a token. Therefore, Dr. Mize has purchased a wider variety of books, branching into chapter books and graphic novels to interest older readers.”

“It is our desire that as a result the children and families will reap the benefits, which include lowered anxiety, a desire to read on their own and, most of all, overall enjoyment of reading,” Causey said. “When a child can select a new book independently, it holds significant importance.”

Tuskegee University Students Redesign Birmingham’s Legion Field, Through NFL Partnership

Tuskegee University students from different majors worked together to complete a reimagined design of Legion Field Stadium in Birmingham, Alabama.

The project is part of a partnership with the Alabama HBCU, the NFL, and the Robert R. Taylor School of Architecture and Construction Science that was announced last fall.

The Historically Black Colleges and University (HBCU) students participated in this multi-disciplinary initiative that created opportunities for students to focus on design, leadership, and collaboration. The students designed the stadium with a focus on the fan and player experience, architectural design, engineering, and construction.

Students worked to complete the project throughout the semester and their experience culminated in a presentation of their proposed plan at the NFL league office in New York with league executives and members of the American Institute of Architects.

The students presented a proposal of renovations to Legion Field Stadium that included 65,000 seats, 100 luxury suites, a retractable roof, retractable fields, and seats to accommodate soccer, and track and field events.

The stadium is designed with solar panels, modern water harvesting and cooling systems, a community village, and a garden for high-end concessions contributing to the stadium’s sustainability. A hotel has been incorporated into the design as a destination location.

This NFL pilot program is a multi-disciplinary initiative creating opportunities for students across several schools and a part of the league’s larger goal to engage with HBCU campuses through its Campus Connection program.

“This is exactly the kind of experience we want our students to enjoy,” said President Charlotte P. Morris. “Giving them real-world experience in an industry they are working to join, gives them invaluable insight into what they should expect and the success they can ultimately accomplish.”

Professor Roderick Fluker, associate professor of the Tuskegee University School of Architecture and Construction Science and a faculty advisor, was impressed with how well the students worked together.

“We were really impressed with the knowledge and professionalism they exhibited throughout the process and certainly the final results,” he said. “Through the design process, the team was able to research and implement stadium design innovations while also being sensitive to an urban neighborhood context.”

In addition to architecture, the disciplines they represent include construction science, mechanical engineering, sales and marketing, and supply chain management.

Jordan Pettway, a senior sales and marketing major from Mobile, appreciated the exposure.

“The NFL Case Study opened my eyes in so many ways,” she said. “I was able to work alongside the team learning about different aspects of their fields of study. The stadium design came to life piece by piece and I honestly could not believe my eyes when I saw what we created together in the end. This is an experience I’ll never forget.”

Senior architecture major Chanse Huff agrees. “This project has broadened our perspectives far beyond our individual majors. My greatest takeaway is the power of true teamwork.”

Walter P. Cooper Sr., who leads the university career center, said interacting with NFL leaders gave the students an experience that exceeded expectations. “Students engaged with NFL representatives working in a variety of capacities affording each student invaluable exposure to various career pathways within the NFL. We look forward to growing this partnership to expand to other special projects with the NFL.”

The objective of the NFL’s HBCU Campus Connection program is to form relationships with students year-round through collaborative initiatives including lectures, speaking opportunities, case studies, and various events promoting career development. Since 2018, the program has reached over 2,000 students.

“We are proud of the innovation and creativity the students displayed while suggesting solutions to a real issue within the NFL,” said NFL Senior Vice President of Football Operations Arthur McAfee III. “Through the Campus Connection program and our partnership with Tuskegee, the NFL’s commitment to HBCUs extends beyond the field by driving awareness around career opportunities and providing access to the business of sports.”

The students presented a proposal of renovations to Legion Field Stadium that included 65,000 seats, 100 luxury suites, a retractable roof, retractable fields, and seats to accommodate soccer, and track and field events. (Tuskegee)

Dozens of business and community leaders gathered Thursday at the UAB Hilton Hotel on Birmingham’s Southside for Building Alabama Reinvestment (BAR) Conference’s “Banking on Change: Uncovering Opportunities in the South.”

The daylong meeting centered on conversations and collaborations with speakers and panel discussions – in which tools and information were shared to develop strategies for improving underserved communities and serving low-to-moderate income families.

Attendees also had the opportunity to network at the event.

Bob Dickerson, executive director of BAR and board chair of the National Community Reinvestment Coalition (NCRC), said he was pleased by the turnout and points that were made.

He highlighted The Community Reinvestment Act (CRA) which requires the Federal Reserve and other federal banking regulators to encourage financial institutions to help meet the credit needs of the communities in which they do business, including low-and-moderate income (LMI) neighborhoods.

“We are on the verge of making the CRA compliance more impactful … so we see more houses, more home improvement, (and) more businesses in the communities that we care about,” he said.

He added, “… and we still tell the truth about some of the things that are and are not happening in our communities.

Dickerson said he wants to build on this year’s conference and “go deeper into these conversations about community development and gain greater understanding (on how to carry it out through collaborative efforts).”

Other speakers and panelists included David Jackson, Assistant Vice President, of Community & Economic Development for the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta; Taurie Grant, Community Affairs Specialist for the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC); April Atkins, Community Affairs Officer, bank supervision policy for the Office of the Comptroller of the Currency.

Also, Mary Ellen Judah, Executive Director/CEO of Neighborhood Concepts, Inc.; Teresa Fox-Bettis, Executive Director for the Center for Fair Housing; and Ed Gorman, Managing Director of the National Community Reinvestment Community (NCRC) Housing Rehab Fund.

After Having Her Blood Pressure Reach ‘Stroke Level’, Marcella Roberts is Raising Awareness

Marcella Roberts, American Heart Association (AHA) National Board Member, remembers being at a Scientific Sessions Conference in New Orleans, Louisiana when a blood pressure machine caught her attention.

It was the shape of the machine, which was peculiar and looked like the sleeve of an arm, she remembered.

“I was fascinated so I walked up and so I put my arm in it. I couldn’t see the numbers, but the attendant could see the reading and she started to ask me questions about how I was doing,” said Roberts.

What began as a normal day quickly turned into a moment that almost floored her, said Roberts, 56, an attorney and business owner.

The Pivotal Reading

Still unaware of the condition of what was soon to be revealed, Roberts complied with the request of the machine’s attendant.

The medical professional asked Roberts to put her arm in the blood pressure sleeve again. And she asked again and again to be sure. Roberts’ blood pressure was not only high, but it was at stroke level.

“Everybody was just shocked that I was walking around with my blood pressure that high. I felt fine … (so before learning my numbers) I had no reason to be alarmed,” she said.

With the help of a friend, Roberts took an Uber to the Emergency Room at Tulane University. “My numbers were even higher in there,” she said.

Roberts was told to check with her primary care doctor “when I got back [to Birmingham] the next day.”

Roberts would travel home the following day, but that night she looked up a few home remedies to help her lower her blood pressure until she saw her primary care doctor.

“Not only did my primary care doctor put me on medication, but I in turn (later) lost about 30 pounds (by adhering to a better eating plan) to manage this new diagnosis,” she said.

Adjusting her diet drastically because she’s a self-described “foodie, and I love to eat” was a challenge, said Roberts.

May is AHA Stroke Awareness Month, a time to raise awareness that stroke is largely preventable, treatable and beatable.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), high blood pressure can lead to stroke, heart attack or even kidney failure.

It’s called “the silent killer” because it often has no symptoms. But if you notice unusual fatigue, chest pain or an irregular heartbeat, health officials advise you always check with your primary care doctor sooner rather than later.

Also, blood pressure monitors can be purchased for in-home use or people can use them free of charge at local pharmacies and fire departments.

The Joy of the Lord

Roberts is a married mother of four with three grandchildren and now shares everything about her health scare in November 2023.

Asked how she maintains her strength in spite of what she faced, she quickly noted, “The joy of the Lord is my strength.”

She’s a Birmingham native, graduating from Jones Valley High School (now Jones Valley Middle School) in western Birmingham.

She attended Stillman College in Tuscaloosa after high school graduation and obtained her Juris Doctorate from Miles College in Fairfield.

After the health scare Roberts said she eats better and reduces stress. She also talks about the importance of knowing your family history.

“[My] hypertension was hereditary, and I had numerous family members who struggled with high blood pressure from three or four generations,” said Roberts.

She’s continued to educate herself about “how common it is for women and people of color to have hypertension.”

She’s not only passionate about living her best life, but purposes to help others do the same.

For anyone dealing with a health scare or new diagnosis, she gives this word of wisdom. “Do not fear. Go to your heavenly Father and ask for what you want. Make a plan and do it, but do not fear,” she said.

Goals To Live Healthy

Theresa Rodgers, who holds a Doctorate of Nursing Practice (DNP) and is also a Certified Pediatric Nurse Practitioner (CPNP), also has had a personal experience with high blood pressure.

She’s retired from Children’s Hospital and is now at UAB as adjunct instructor of clinical faculty and said everyone should know their numbers.

“I couldn’t I get my first job as a nurse because my blood pressure was (too high) 160 / 100, she said.  “Here I am 22 – with no headaches no signs of high blood pressure.”

“The goal is 120 / 80 for normal blood pressure,” she said.

And she added there are things that you as an individual can do prior to taking medicine to manage the condition.

“If you’re overweight, the goal is to get to a healthy weight. Eat a diet that is low in salt. Limit alcohol, and if you’re a smoker, you need to quit smoking,” said Rodgers.

Roberts agreed and added the importance of annual wellness checkups “to get a full workup on what your blood looks like – including your blood pressure and cholesterol levels.”

“If we can get control of what we’re eating… that has a big impact on our health. And because most of us are so sedentary, make sure you get exercise,” said Roberts.

Birmingham Mayor Woodfin Calls on Public to Help Bring Killers to Justice

0
Mayor Randall Woodfin called on residents to help police solve shooting cases. (Barnett Wright, The Birmingham Times)

By Barnett Wright | The Birmingham Times

Saying he had sympathy for the victims of recent homicides and shootings – including a 62-year-old man in a wheelchair killed on Tuesday and two children injured in gun shootings on Mother’s Day – Mayor Randall Woodfin called on residents to help police solve the cases.

“My heart and thoughts are with these victims, but especially our children and seniors, and I need the public to help us take shooters and killers off the street who harm our most vulnerable community members, which are our children and our seniors,” said Woodfin, during a Wednesday morning press conference at City Hall.

“That is my direct plea to the public, that we need your assistance. If you need safe harbor or help in sharing that information, let us know so we can give it to you.”

The mayor opened and closed his 45-minute press conference expressing frustration at witnesses who refuse to cooperate with the Birmingham Police Department. He also took issue with community residents who are providing “safe harbor” for those involved in crimes.

“There are no secrets in Birmingham where people know, have facts, have evidence, have information, know who, know what, know when, know how, know the shooter, know the driver, know the type of car. They have the information,’’ he said.

He added, “I want to talk about people in this community who literally give safe harbor to people who shoot and/or kill children and seniors. In three instances, people have taken the opportunity to shoot an 11-year-old, a 9-year-old, who survived, and shoot and kill a 62-year-old man. There is no one in this community who should be giving [shooters], or providing them, safe harbor.”

He called on “the village” — community residents — to step up and said there would be assistance for people who fear retaliation for testifying against shooters.

“We are supposed to, as in the village, do everything to take care of our children and our elders, our seniors,” he said.

The mayor pointed to a partnership with Crimestoppers that contains a fund of $80,000 for witnesses, or those with information to come forward, but said he “shouldn’t have to dangle money” for the public to do the right thing.

However, he added, steps were needed “by any means necessary to get factual information for people to come forward . . . who have information [about those] who have shot children in this city.”

On Tuesday, 62-year-old Michael Phillip Coleman who was confined to a wheelchair and suffering from ALS, died outside of his Woodlawn apartment. That came after two Mother’s Day shootings in Birmingham that left an 11-year-old boy and a 9-year-old girl wounded.

The 9-year-old girl, was shot in Gate City Sunday when she was caught in crossfire while riding with her mother and is recovering at home.

Also Sunday, an 11-year-old boy and his father were shot on the city’s westside in what police say was a targeted attack. The boy is expected to recover.

Anyone with information about shootings or homicides in Birmingham can call Birmingham detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.

Owners of MedsPLUS Consulting Bring Personal Touch to Pharmacy Services

Jennifer Campbell and Pauline K. Long, co-owners of MedsPLUS Consulting Pharmacy & Wellness Center in downtown Birmingham, are far more than doctors in pharmacy who dispense medications to patients in the metro area.

Their personalized approach to pharmacy services, including medication management, consultations, and even in-home or office deliveries, help to prolong and save lives in Birmingham.

They put a high level of attention to make sure patients correctly take prescribed medicine, are up to date on their vaccines, and understand why they are taking their medication.

For example, Campbell recently met a woman at a community health screening event and became concerned about the woman’s blood pressure being high even though the woman was on blood pressure medicine.

After the woman switched to MedsPLUS Pharmacy, Campbell discovered that the woman had been taking one medication incorrectly, which caused significant side effects. Campbell worked to ensure that the woman took the right medication at the right times through a MedsPLUS initiative known as the “Blister Pack,’’ which is an easy way for pharmacists to organize medicines for clients.

Campbell’s close attention yielded positive results for the woman.

“She said she felt better, and her blood pressure was improved,’ Campbell said. “We do pharmacy different.  We are focused on changing health outcomes for our patients to live a better quality of life by providing a better access to care.’’

That care goes beyond adjusting medications. MedsPLUS will be part of more than 30 community partners scheduled to participate in the Third Annual Mental Health Awareness Day planned for July in Linn Park. The event will feature speakers, mental health resources, line dancing, food trucks and more.

What Campbell and Long hope attendees will gain from them is how a pharmacist can be an ally when it comes to mental health awareness. The pharmacists will do blood pressure checks and explain pharmacogenomics, which is how one’s DNA responds with the different classes of medication, including mental health medication for depression and anxiety.

“You may start with a therapist, but you may end up on medication. With that, the pharmacist can advise on proper medication use, dosage timing and when to expect full benefit from the medication,’’ Long said.

A lot of times, a patient may focus on the relationship with their doctor or therapist. But it’s just as important to build a relationship with one’s pharmacist, Campbell said.

“We really are trying to create a sustainable model so that this can go further than just MedsPLUS,’’ she said.

Health Care Team

Campbell and Long have served the community long enough to know how medications can pile up over time in the home and cause errors and confuse people.

Many, especially those managing multiple medications and chronic conditions, often identify pills based on color rather than the name. For instance, if someone is accustomed to taking a white pill for high blood pressure, they will likely continue to do so. However, if the manufacturer changes the color of that high blood pressure pill to blue, the patient might not notice the change and mistakenly take both the white pill and the blue pill for high blood pressure which can lead to confusion and medication errors, particularly among older patients or those managing complex medication regimens.

“We teach our patients that we are a member of (their) health care team, as well. This is not just a transaction,’’ Campbell said. “So, if you are having an issue, we can help you navigate, whether it’s through a referral’’ or something else.

Long recently helped a patient navigate the health care system after the patient had been discharged from the hospital. She helped the patient find a new independent living space and coached him to take medication correctly with the Blister Pack.

People are at the core of what MedsPLUS does, and the company recently hired three community health workers to work with patients as a referral source to social services.

“When you are physically in the community and you see the needs that people have, many don’t realize there are resources to help.  So, we are trying to  ‘close that gap’ and make connections,”  Campbell said.

Central To The Community

Campbell and Long have more than a combined four decades of community experience. Both graduated from Samford University’s McWhorter School of Pharmacy with a doctor in pharmacy degree. They started MedsPLUS in 2018 after they recognized a need for more personalized, comprehensive care, particularly in minority communities that have been historically marginalized and underserved. They moved to downtown Birmingham in 2022 after working remotely.

“We were strategic in selecting the Birmingham downtown location so we can be central to the communities we serve,” said Campbell. “We want patients to know that you don’t have to go to a pharmacy, stand in line, feel like a transaction and not be comfortable talking to the pharmacist because they are extremely busy.”

MedsPLUS also offers diabetes education and counsels patients on their chronic conditions to change lifestyles.

Currently, Campbell and Long teach a free Type 2 diabetes class, which meets every two weeks, at the Five Points West Library. The next full session, which will consist of five classes over 10 weeks, will start in mid-July at the Titusville Library. The deadline to register for the July session is Friday, June 28. Participants must have Type 2 diabetes. To register, call 205-650-4636.

MedsPLUS is located on the eighth floor of the New South Federal building at 215
Richard Arrington Jr. Blvd. They are open Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Their

Birmingham Fitness Instructor Tracy Williams and the Power of Movement

Birmingham healthy living advocate Tracy Williams believes in the power of movement to bring about change.

When her 46-year-old sister died unexpectedly in 2012, Williams funneled her anger into workouts. Music and dance helped her cope with the hurt.

Then, in April 2024, her 59-year-old brother passed. Williams already had a senior citizens’ exercise class to teach the next day. She kept the appointment.

“Exercise just keeps reminding me why I’m doing this,’’ said Williams, 54 and a certified fitness instructor. “Yeah, you could go somewhere and cry in the corner, but that is not helping you or helping anyone else. My brother would not want me to do that.’’

And just like movement helped Williams cope with the loss of her two siblings, it also helped improve her health. In 2013, one year after losing her sister, Williams was diagnosed as being pre-diabetic. Her doctor encouraged her to move more and watch her diet.

She started exercising, lost 50 pounds and moved out of the pre-diabetic range. As she worked out, she wondered how she could share her interest in good health with others. In 2020, she started leading small exercise classes through her fitness company, T Will Productions.

Williams will lead an old school music line dancing class during Mental Health Awareness Day this July at Linn Park in front of Birmingham City Hall. There will also be food trucks and community partners distributing mental health resources. The event will feature speakers, mental health resources, line dancing, food trucks and more.

“I want to meet every senior God intends for me to meet. I don’t want to be somewhere crying because I don’t have my brother and my sister,’’ Williams said. “You can find a thousand reasons to be sad, but it only takes one reason to be happy. I just want to live a full and happy life.’’

What started out with her teaching a class here or there, grew into her teaching classes at senior citizen centers, health centers and churches. In 2021, she started teaching a line dancing class at Railroad Park and uses old school music to get the mind and the heart feeling good.

“When you incorporate moving and music, it changes your mind. It lightens the load,’’ Williams said. “It’s hard to dance and be sad.’’

Senior citizens see Williams’ classes as a ministry and as therapy. “She is a keeper!  This is what we need!’’ one participant exclaimed. Another participant, who is in her 70s, reduced her blood pressure, lowered her blood sugar test results and lost 21 pounds in a year.

“That may not seem like a lot to people, but for someone who is aging, … that is a blessing,’’ Williams said of the 21-pound weight loss.

But dancing was not enough to ease Williams’ grief after her sister died. She drove to work every morning, crying. She walked into work, wiping her tear-stained face. She recognized the depression and sought counseling from a licensed therapist. She started in 2012 and continued for several years.

“The reason I continued is because when I worked through the stuff with my sister, life began to happen,’’ Williams said. “I had my heart broken. I was struggling to finish school. So, I needed direction, and I found it in therapy.’’

She said she’s a strong advocate for counseling, and she encourages others to seek professional help when they need it.

“Today is not promised to us. So, I want to use whatever number of years God grants me to help others,’’ she said. “It’s not just about me. It’s about what I do while I’m here as God’s servant.’’

Trying to Get Rich Can Put Your Hard-Earned Money in Scammers’ Pockets

0

As we discussed at the beginning of this month, the newest safety series would focus on different types of scams in 2024. Technology has allowed scammers the ability to develop more sophisticated cons to steal people’s money. Over 10 billion dollars was stolen just last year. This week, let’s focus on investment scams.

Frauds involving too-good-to-be-true investments or business opportunities are now widespread. Scammers use high-pressure measures to lure their victims into making impulsive investment decisions.

If you spend any time on social media, it may appear that everyone is getting rich via online investments these days, but you. As a result, there’s a lot of attention being paid to all different types of new investment opportunities. Since the pandemic, many Americans have begun taking an increased interest in doing their own investing.

Scammers are increasingly targeting people with fake investment and business opportunities, by dangling the false promises of big returns. These scams can take many different forms such as investments in precious metals, real estate, rare coins, stocks or cryptocurrencies.

One of the scams involves sending out phony offers to people by email, instant messaging platforms, social media, or even dating sites. They tell them they can become an investor in a new company, technology, or digital currency, while promising high returns quickly.

Scammers may also refer to legitimate trading platforms and investment options to avoid suspicion. In many of these cases, scammers will offer to set up an investment account on a legitimate trading platform for the victim, if they supply the money. What the victims do not know is that the scammers are either making that account a joint account or are keeping and using their credentials so they can also have access and steal your money.

Even in the age of technology, the old saying remains true, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is!” This is why you must continue to educate yourselves on the different types of scams existing today so you can Keep an Eye on Safety over your earned dollars.

“I came to the realization years ago that I couldn’t help everyone, but that doesn’t mean I won’t try.”
