Tapping Into God-Given Gifts

0

When’s the last time you made time to listen to that still, small voice on the inside of you? Or when have you last taken a moment to breathe and take in all of what’s happening in your life? In an era of cellphones, laptops, tablets and smart watches, those questions can almost come off as laughable.

We are only a snap (or a power button) away from the latest news updates, the next event alarm or recurring Zoom call. Gadgets deliver what’s happening in the world with the utmost quickness right to our eyes and ears.

So why would we want to listen in silence when there’s so much else to hear going on around us? I have found that when I am struggling to keep up with every social media update, bouncing from one virtual meeting to another and packing my calendar with the latest social networking outings, it is far too easy to lose my own agenda and goals to something and someone else. I get lost in a true external agenda.

Here’s what I mean: When I’m keeping up with all the items going on in the world, or my community, I can easily lose focus on my own agenda, or my internal compass. And if you aren’t making time to focus on your goals and dreams, and listen to the still, small voice, the same thing is happening to you too. It may be a harsh statement, but it is a fact.

I believe that one characteristic of successful people is their tenacious focus.  They are clear on their mission – or life vision – and remain committed to it. And we all see the fruit of their focus, regardless of whatever else is going on around them. They work with excellence, which is going beyond what most people give (the status quo). They accomplish their goals easily. And greatness surrounds them, in the form of other people taking notice of their work.

You know, they are the ones whom others will say, “No one can do that like them.” They simply took time to tap into the God-given gift they were given. And I implore you to do the same.

Time waits for no one, so why not strive for a life well lived and a life well invested (in terms of time). Make your life, your work and your goals count. Listen and get clear on what your heart is saying. Then follow it with fervor. The world – your world – is waiting to see what you will manifest.

How a Cyberattack Nearly Derailed Birmingham’s $554 Million Proposed Budget for FY 2025

By Barnett Wright | The Birmingham Times

Months after the City of Birmingham’s computer systems were attacked, Mayor Randall Woodfin on Tuesday presented a proposed $554 million fiscal 2025 budget to the City Council which prioritized neighborhood revitalization, investments in youth, and public transportation.

Birmingham Mayor Randall Woodfin.

Because of the hack, the proposed spending plan presented Tuesday is the same one approved last year by the Birmingham City Council. Finance officials were forced to miss several target dates over seven weeks and 11 dates within the budget schedule since the March 6 attack occurred.

That led the mayor’s administration on Tuesday to submit the budget from the current fiscal year “to ensure a seamless transition,” according to officials.

The new fiscal year begins July 1.

“We are proposing the general fund budget for the current fiscal year [2024] be submitted as the general fund budget for the upcoming 2025 fiscal year,” Woodfin said in his budget message.

“This recommendation will provide no interruptions to the operation of the city and provide a seamless transition from FY2024 to FY2025,” the mayor said. “Funding priorities for neighborhood revitalization, investments in our youth, and public safety will be supported through the existing budget.”

The proposed spending plan came after what city officials described as “unexpected activity” that disrupted certain computer systems on March 6, “including those used by the finance department to administer the budget process.”

AL.com reported in April that “multiple government sources” said the city was the victim of a ransomware attack, with hackers gaining access to the city’s computer systems and demanding payment for the city to get its data back.

On Tuesday, the city assured residents “at this time, there’s no sign of suspicious activity in the city’s systems. The city is working to bring all city systems online; however, full operability of certain systems may continue to be an ongoing process.”

With no changes from the current budget, “the mayor will move to amend the Fiscal Year 2025 budget to reflect adjustments based on shared priorities,” according to the city. “This will include considerations from neighborhoods, employees, departments, and boards and agencies.”

The Fiscal Year 2024/2025 spending plan includes:

  • Street resurfacing: $14.5 million
  • Weed abatement: $2 million
  • Demolition: $1 million
  • Land Bank: $500,000
  • Traffic calming: $250,000 (traffic calming includes physical measures to reduce vehicle speeds and increase safety for pedestrians and cyclists)
  • Sidewalks: $200,000

The budget invests in multiple youth initiatives. The Birmingham Promise will receive $2 million to support juniors and seniors in Birmingham City Schools through apprenticeships and tuition support for higher education. An additional $1 million will go to Birmingham City Schools for mental health support. In addition, $1 million each will continue for financial literacy and conflict resolution curriculums provided through a partnership with Birmingham City Schools.

Public transportation in the proposed budget includes $11 million for the Birmingham-Jefferson County Transit Authority’s fixed route service, $3 million for the Birmingham Xpress bus rapid transit system, and $2.5 million for the Birmingham On-Demand shared mobility service powered by VIA.

The budget funds merit and longevity pay for eligible employees. Employees will see no out-of-pocket increases in healthcare costs, according to the mayor’s office.

“While this current budget process is unique, our focus will not waver from lifting up each neighborhood to realize the best version of Birmingham we can possibly be,” Woodfin said in his budget message. “We will continue to keep the City Council, the public and employees informed of the next steps in this process.”

Mayor Woodfin’s proposed budget under consideration by the Birmingham City Council can be viewed online at www.birminghamal.gov/budget2025.

Selena Rodgers Dickerson, Domestic Violence Survivor: ‘I Choose Not to Look at Myself as a Victim’

0
Salena Rodgers Dickerson, owner of SARCOR LLC, and engineering firm in Birmingham, will serve as a Domestic Violence Survivor Ambassador for the City of Birmingham’s Mental Health Awareness Day on May 17. (Juwan T. Dickerson, Provided)

By Chanda Temple | For The Birmingham Times

Selena Rodgers Dickerson’s college years should have been filled with happy days as she pursued her degree. Instead, a portion of her college career was marred by fear and pain as she experienced domestic violence.

Dickerson is the owner of SARCOR, LLC, and engineering firm in Birmingham, and her story of survival is tough in that a boyfriend she had while she was a co-op student in Huntsville, Alabama, choked and body slammed her onto a coffee table. He then hit her so hard in her left eye, that she suffered a swollen face and a partially detached retina.

Her ex-boyfriend may have left her beaten, bloodied and bruised, but she was determined not to be permanently broken.

After the brutal December 1999 attack, she returned to her studies at Tennessee State University. A program offered by the State of Alabama helped her source the assistance of a domestic violence counselor with the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department. At the time, she was 22 and her then-boyfriend was 25.

Prior to the attack, Dickerson put her then-boyfriend’s needs before her own. As a result, her schoolwork suffered. “I was made to believe that my relationship was more important than my education,’’ she said, adding that the two worked together at her co-op job in Huntsville, and he would berate her at her desk.

“I didn’t recognize the verbal abuse and the manipulation,” she said. “It took me going through counseling to know that. I thought (what he was doing) was love because it felt like someone cared about what I was doing and how I did it.’’

On Friday, May 17, Dickerson will serve as a Domestic Violence Survivor Ambassador for the City of Birmingham’s Mental Health Awareness Day in Linn Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mental health and domestic violence experts, healthcare agencies, free depression screenings and more will be on hand that day to remove barriers for the public in accessing needed resources.

In 2020, Dickerson publicly shared her story in a written opinion piece after her former boyfriend requested a court hearing to get his gun rights restored. He didn’t get it.

Now, several times a year, people contact Dickerson, asking for direction on what to do in cases of domestic violence. Sometimes, the callers are afraid or embarrassed. Other times the callers are unsure about where to turn. And then there are people who praise Dickerson for sharing her story because they experienced something similar.

She feels their pain and doesn’t want anyone to feel the anguish she felt in 1999 or even what she is still dealing with today. The attack also left her with a deviated septum; a left jawbone that sits a little higher than the right side; and a left eye that sometimes twitches, involuntarily.

“It’s something I have to live with, and I silently pray it stops,’’ Dickerson said of the eye twitch. But it hasn’t stopped the 47-year-old from running SARCOR, a 16-year-old civil and transportation engineering design company in the Magic City.  “I’m a survivor of domestic violence. I choose not to look at myself as a victim.”

Dickerson hopes the May 17 event in Linn Park will empower people to break free of their fear and look for and use available resources that can help them.

‘I Was Smitten with His Proposal … And Of Course, Said ‘Yes’’

BY JE’DON HOLLOWAY-TALLEY | Special to the Birmingham Times

DESLAND AND EVERETT ROBINSON Sr.

Live: McCalla

Married:  Oct. 4, 2008

Met: Summer 1985, in Desland’s family’s backyard. Their houses were divided by a fence “with one wooden slat missing and we could see each other through the slat,” recalled Everett. “But Desland didn’t like me, she said I was loud and cocky,” he laughed.

They became good friends throughout their childhood and Everett said they had a two-day relationship during their adolescence. Still, Desland doesn’t remember. “He never called my house to seal the deal because he was scared of my mom,” she said.

Soon after, Desland’s family moved, and they kept in touch through mutual friends. However, in the fall of 2006 they reconnected on Myspace [a social networking platform popular in the early 2000s’]. They were now 26-year-old college grads, Desland, from the University of Alabama at Birmingham [UAB], and Everett, from Vanderbilt University [Nashville, Tenn.]  when Everett came across Desland’s profile and sent her a message saying, ‘Love of my life, where have you been?’ And I said ‘ol’ Everett Robinson, how’s it been?’ and we chatted for a while and a few days later we exchanged numbers. I was semi-dating someone at the time, but Everett was persistent, he would call or text every day and on occasion, he would invite me out…”

“And it was always ‘I have plans’,” Everett said. But one evening after Desland’s plans fell through she agreed to meet with him and a few of their old friends at Buffalo Wild Wings in Hoover.

First date: November 2006, at Red Lobster in Vestavia. The pair doesn’t remember a lot about their first date, but Desland does remember Everett saying “I think you’re smitten with me” and I thought that was an interesting use of words to describe how I felt, and my response to him was ‘hmm, I could be,” said Desland.

“And that’s when ‘I said, ‘I got her’,” Everett laughed. “On the way home after the date, I was thinking ‘man, [I just went on a date with] Desland from the neighborhood’, because she was the ‘it girl’ growing up, and I was like I’m finally getting my chance at the dream girl,” he said.

The turn: For Everett, it was Christmas 2006. “I invited her to my family Christmas dinner, and we exchanged gifts… I had told my family that I reconnected with Desland and there was lots of anticipation,” Everett said.

“When I walked through that door all eyes were on me,” Desland laughed. “When they got a clear picture of me the open-armed warm greetings began, and I remember falling in love with his family all over again. And when I was leaving his mom gave me the biggest hug and said, ‘remember I love you’.”

“So, in my mind, she was my girl,” Everett said.

But Desland said she didn’t feel committed until spring 2007. “We had an ultimatum type of conversation. We were at that fork in the road where we discussed, ‘Are we gonna be committed or is this casual dating?’” Desland said. “I knew what I wanted and the type of relationship I was looking for, and we were both aligned on our paths and journeys and that’s what changed it for me and sealed the deal.”

The proposal:  Valentine’s Day 2008, at Red Lobster in Vestavia Hills.

Everett said he asked her parents for her hand in marriage a month before the proposal, and to execute his plan, he had Desland meet him at the restaurant so that he could get things in order.

“I had ordered some personalized blue and green M&M’s, which are our favorite colors, and the phrase, ‘will you’ was on some, and “marry me?” was on the others.  So when I arrived, I got the maitre’d to get me our server and I gave the M&M’s to him and let him know that was going to be our special desert, and the code word was ‘special desert.’ We had an awesome dinner and the server asked if we wanted dessert, to which Desland said ‘no’, and the look on my face was priceless,” Everett laughed.

“But the waiter rebounded and insisted that we try this special Valentine’s dessert. He brought them out on a serving platter with a lid and set it in front of Desland and removed it. As he was doing that, I got down on one knee and took the ring out of my pocket and Desland was trying to read the M&M’s and paying no attention to me,” he laughed. “And when she finally looked in my direction and saw me on one knee, I told her she was indeed the love of my life and I wanted to know if she’d spend the rest of my life with me. She said ‘yes’, and the [other guests at the restaurant] cheered.

“I was impressed with his level of creativity because I don’t typically care for traditions or surprises. He truly impressed me, and I was indeed smitten with his whole proposal gesture and of course, said ‘yes’”.

The wedding: At St. Paul Lutheran Church in Titusville, officiated by Pastor, Thomas R. Noon. Their colors were green and cream.

Most memorable for the bride was receiving a letter from her groom before the ceremony.

“We were in our separate spaces getting ready, and somebody brought a letter to the door and said, ‘can you deliver this to Desland?” Everett wrote me the most beautiful letter about how much I meant to him, how much our being married meant, how much spending the rest of our lives together meant, and just how blessed and thankful he was for me and it really drew tears. I still have that letter, I framed it,” Desland said.

Most memorable for the groom was the tight schedule their wedding day had due to his love for Vanderbilt football.

“We got married at 11 am sharp and the reason was that it was football season,” Everett laughed. “Being a Vanderbilt football alumnus and season ticket holder, I made a sacrifice to get married on a Vanderbilt game weekend (a game I would have normally been at), and that day they were playing Auburn at home in Nashville. So we were on a strict schedule, married at 11, and the reception from noon-4 pm. We rented a 1950’ish Bentley and rode around town for a bit and arrived at the hotel [Hotel Indigo, in Five Points South] at 5 p.m. We got food and were in front of the TV for kick-off at 6 p.m. I was the keeper of that schedule and it went off without a hitch,” he laughed. “But the most special moment was seeing the doors open and watching her enter the church. My brother told me I would need tissue, and I did,” said Everett.

They honeymooned in Montego Bay, Jamaica. “My best friend was getting married in Jamaica in November [2008], so we used his destination wedding as our honeymoon,” Everett said.

Words of wisdom: “When we got married, our videographer [interviewed people for words of advice] and our favorite quote was from my brother, Dannye and he said ‘Marriage is good, marriage is great, but marriage is work; never stop working’, and those are words that we have always remembered, and have vowed to live by. We are always working on our marriage,” Everett said.

“The word commitment has always resonated with us, and mastering the art of love in marriage takes a true commitment,” Desland said. “That’s really what our relationship and friendship is rooted and grounded in, it keeps us balanced.”

Happily ever after: The Robinsons attend Grace Life Baptist Church in McCalla, where they both serve in the youth ministry, and have two children, daughter Elise, 10, and Everett Jr. [EJ], 7.

Desland, 44, is a Hueytown native, and McAdory High School grad. Birmingham to host Mental Health Awareness Day on May 17

The City of Birmingham will join community partners to present Mental Health Awareness Day from Friday at Linn Park. Attendees will be able to engage with experts and discuss mental health. (Adobe Stock)

By Chanda Temple | For The Birmingham Times

On Friday, May 17, the City of Birmingham and community partners will be in Linn Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. to offer free resources and have conversations on mental health, which is a topic many people are often reluctant to address.

Crystal Mullen-Johnson

Crystal Mullen-Johnson, a licensed clinical social worker/founder of Strive Counseling Services and founder of Nurture Alabama, wants to dismantle the stigma around mental health, which is why she is partnering with the City of Birmingham and Birmingham Park and Recreation to help present the Third Annual Mental Health Awareness Day.

“Mental Health Awareness Month is recognized nationally in May, which is a valuable opportunity to unite with others who share a common goal: to engage in open discussions about mental health and to provide support to those in need,’’ Mullen-Johnson said.

Said Mayor Randall L. Woodfin: “Mental health and wellness are too often ignored in our community. Mental Health Awareness Day is our chance to change that; it’s our opportunity to emphasize the importance of mental health.’’

Not only will attendees be able to connect with mental health experts on a variety of topics, visit food trucks, take part in depression screenings, participate in yoga and exercise sessions, register for giveaways and hear from speakers, but they will also learn more about combating domestic violence.

One in three women and one in four men have reported having experienced severe physical violence from an intimate partner in their lifetime, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. And due to the recent number of area homicides involving domestic violence, Mullen-Johnson wanted to highlight that recognizing early signs of domestic violence is crucial to ending the cycle.

Birmingham businesswoman Selena Rodgers Dickerson, who has been selected as a Domestic Violence Survivor Ambassador for this year’s Mental Health Awareness Day, will be in the park to lend a listening ear to attendees and encourage them to check out resources. Hearing how several women have died recently at the hands of their abusers, left her wanting to encourage women to seek help if they are hurting, Dickerson said.

She and Mullen-Johnson hope the event in Linn Park will empower people to break free of their fear and look for and use available resources that can help them. The YWCA Central Alabama Domestic Violence Services will have a table at the event.

Mullen-Johnson added that through this free event, Nurture of Alabama’s mission is to expand access and shift the conversation about mental health so that all Alabamians, especially those from historically marginalized communities, can thrive.

Speakers on the stage will include:

  • Alexandria Means, a domestic violence expert, 10:10 a.m.
  • Beverly Johnson from the Alabama Department of Mental Health, 10:25 a.m.
  • Hernando Carter, a general practitioner, 12 p.m.

Some of the interactive sessions will include:

  • Activities for adults from the City’s Park and Recreation Department, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Depression screenings with Cherie May Edwards, a licensed professional counselor,  10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Mental health consultations with Lauren Packer, an associate licensed counselor, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Chair massages from Adrian Ward, 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
  • Line dancing with fitness instructor Tracy Williams, 11 a.m.
  • Yoga therapist Jamella Strode leads session on how breathing techniques can help improve responses to trauma triggers, 12:30 p.m.
  • A low impact sculpt class with fitness instructor April Mack, 1 p.m.

With $1 Billion in Investments, Downtown Birmingham’s Uptown District in National Spotlight

0
According to forbes.com, the Uptown Birmingham District, with its Protective Stadium, renovated Legacy Arena and dining and shopping options, is a Neighborhood to Watch. (File)

The Birmingham Times

Birmingham’s Uptown Entertainment District, with its Protective Stadium, renovated Legacy Arena and dining and shopping options, is a Neighborhood to Watch, according to forbes.com, a national business media and publishing company.

“Offering an eclectic mix of urban sophistication and leisurely activities, the Uptown Birmingham District is a bustling area known for its entertainment, dining and shopping options, featuring diverse restaurants and boutiques,” writes forbes.com

Uptown is a district that anchors the northern end of downtown. Adjacent to the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex (BJCC) in downtown Birmingham, Uptown boasts modern architecture, green spaces and attractions like The Alabama Sports Hall of FameTopgolf, Protective Stadium and City Walk, Forbes writes.

“These assets are critical to Birmingham’s tourism industry and its ability to attract major concerts and events for our city,” says David Fleming, CEO at REV Birmingham, an economic development nonprofit that is working to make the city of Birmingham a more vibrant place.

In 2015, the Birmingham City Council voted to allow the Uptown district, including the Birmingham-Jefferson Convention Complex, to become the city’s first “entertainment district” with visitors allowed to carry drinks outside. These venue investments have helped stimulate new interest in the Birmingham market and aided in bringing high value events to the region including the return of the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament in 2023 and hosting the NCAA Women’s Basketball Regionals in 2025.

The 2022 World Games Opening and Closing Ceremonies were also held at Protective Stadium.

According to the Birmingham Business Alliance, Uptown has been experiencing significant growth. The Alliance was created to enhance job creation, community development, talent recruitment and tourism in the seven central Alabama counties of the Birmingham metro, also known as the Greater Birmingham Region.

The Uptown district has experienced over $1 billion in recent investments all of which “makes Uptown an important part of Birmingham‘s economic vitality and attractiveness,” said Fleming. “However, the investment that has transformed Uptown in the public’s view is the addition of City Walk.”

Several restaurants including Eugene’s Hot Chicken, Mugshots Bar & Grill, The Southern Kitchen Bar, Santos Coffee, Uptown Cantina, K& J Elegant Pastries, Uptown Jazz and most recently Dillard’s Chophouse are all part of the area.

And more are coming to the nearby area. The city has approved the construction of a $50 million amphitheater and the old Carraway Hospital is going to be replaced by the Star Uptown development.
