As a matter of public policy, the City of Birmingham agrees to make opportunities available to the maximum extent possible, to actively include Historically Underutilized Business Enterprises (HUBE’s) such as architectural firms, engineering firms, investment banking firms, other professional consultant services providers, and construction contractors as part of business, economic and community revitalization programs.

The BJCC Concert Hall and Theatre officially opened its doors on October 3, 1974. The venue’s rich history has included performances from renowned artists like Ray Charles, Tina Turner, Bruce Springsteen, Kirk Franklin and Kevin Hart.

“This celebration is not just a commemoration of the past but a heartfelt thank you to the generations who have supported us throughout the years,” said Tad Snider, CEO of the BJCC. “We invite everyone to join us as we honor our shared history and look forward to many more years of bringing outstanding entertainment to Birmingham.”

In addition to the festivities, the Birmingham Children’s Theatre will be offering free tickets to the first 10 families who visit its tent for the 11 a.m. production of Peter & the Wolf during the 50th anniversary celebration. How Therapist Randi Crawford Survived a Near Fatal Car Wreck to Serve Others

0
Randi Crawford specializes in providing therapy to children, adolescents, teens, and young adults struggling with behavioral and mental health issues. (Marika N. Johnson, For The Birmingham Times)

By Ameera Steward | For The Birmingham Times

A few months before graduating Birmingham’s Ramsay High School Randi Crawford was heading to work when her car hit black ice causing her to skid into a pole. “[The doctors] told my mom … I was going to die that night,” remembered Crawford. “But I didn’t die. I woke up three days later. They said, ‘well, she’ll be a vegetable.’”

Within two months she was back at school and work, but not without challenges. The accident caused Crawford to lose her short-term memory and she had to relearn “everything” during her two months of recuperation from how to walk to how to write.

This would later be helpful in building her into the therapist she is today because due to her short-term memory loss it’s beneficial to not take her patients’ stories into the next session, or into her life outside of the office, said the licensed professional counselor.

By opening her own counseling office where she specializes in providing therapy to children, adolescents, teens, and young adults struggling with behavioral and mental health issues, Crawford said she found her purpose.

Walks of Life, located at 105 Vulcan Road in Homewood, not only allows Crawford to provide high quality therapeutic outpatient services to the city of Birmingham, but also allows her to live out her life’s mission of showing “the love of God.”

“Whatever I say [to her patients] I want it to honestly be from [God], because I’ve learned over the past couple of years [that] being a therapist, it’s almost like I’m a superhero,” said the 34-year-old. “That’s so scary…it’s never me [in the sessions], ever.”

Purpose Through Pain

Although Crawford currently lives in Center Point, she grew up in Collegeville and graduated from Ramsay in 2006.

After recovering from her car accident, she was told by doctors not to go far for college, leading her to attend Jacksonville State University — located in Jacksonville, Alabama — to study nursing.

In 2009, while in school one day Crawford and her mother [Marie Hardy] thought her grandmother was asleep. Her mother told her to check her grandmother — since she had just learned how to check for a dying heart. “And I heard it [her grandmother’s heart] slowly going out,” Crawford said.

“When I went back to school,” she continued. “We were working in a nursing home for clinicals, and I was just like, ‘I can’t do this.’”

She then changed her major to exercise science and in 2011 graduated but wasn’t sure what she wanted to do next.

Her boyfriend at the time mentioned that she should go back to school to study counseling because she loved talking to people and talking to kids. So that’s what she did. Crawford went back to school to receive her masters degree in clinical mental health counseling at JSU and graduated in 2016.

She went on to work at Hill Crest Behavioral Health Services where she would always work in the group home “because I saw a difference in talking to kids than when I [worked] with adults.”

If It’s His Will, It’s His Bill

While getting her hair done in 2023, Crawford told her beautician Juanica Hardy that she, Crawford, wanted to open her own practice … “[where] I could treat people how they want to be treated, and show [them] that there are really people that genuinely love [others].”

Hardy told Crawford that she would help her pay for it and fill out the LLC paperwork and all Crawford had to do was come up with the name which was easy for the emerging business owner.

She remembered a conversation with a client from her former job who told Crawford she was easy to talk to.

“And I said, ‘yeah, that’s because we all come from different walks of life…just because [some may be] a recovering addict, [doesn’t] make [them any] different from [someone] having a baby out of wedlock,’’ Crawford explained.

She went on to tell her client she wanted to have her own office one day and the client exclaimed that ‘Walks of Life’ should be the name.

After Crawford made an announcement that she was opening an office on Facebook, “people started cash-apping me…buying all the items in my office,” Crawford said. “The only money I put in that office was $40…even that first month’s rent, a couple of my close friends at the time, donated [money], Juanica sent me $100, until I needed $150 left. And my mom just randomly asked me…’do you have your first month’s rent?’ And I was like ‘nope’ and she Cash-Apped me $150,” which was the exact amount she needed.

One Sunday before opening her office, she was attending Rock City Church located at 1120 Apricot Ave., and Pastor Mike McClure Jr., delivered a sermon where he asserted “if it’s God’s will, it’s God’s bill.”

“He [said] ‘for all my entrepreneurs, anybody trying to start a business, stop worrying about where your money is coming from. If it’s his will, it’s his bill.’ So that’s when I initially was like, ‘wow…God I hear what you’re saying,’” said Crawford, the mother of two boys, 11 and 3 years old.

Walks of Life

In collaboration with one other therapist, Crawford provides child play therapy, and helps with behavioral issues, ADHD, anxiety, depression, and more.

Patients range from five to 38 years old. However, most are adolescents and teens, who Crawford said experience suicidal thoughts most often.

“A lot of these kids deal with so much bullying in school [and] social media,” Crawford said. During their developing years, social media can be a challenge because it encourages young people to compare themselves to who they’re following on social media, and “it’s a lot of pressure, and I feel like it’s just becoming too much.”

In addition, the rise in suicidal thoughts also comes from family dynamics and issues. Crawford said, “you would be surprised how many families really don’t know how to show genuine love and care.”

Crawford ensures that she cultivates a peaceful and loving environment for her patients.

For example, one said that counseling is the one place in his life where he isn’t constantly in trouble. “He said, ‘everywhere else I just feel like I’m always in trouble, or nobody wants to listen to me,’” Crawford explained. “‘But when I’m in here I know I’m not in trouble, you’re listening to me…I’m just comfortable.’”

‘Exhibiting Forgiveness:’ The Homegrown Talent of Actor André Holland

When the film “Exhibiting Forgiveness” opens in theaters on October 18, audiences across the country will have a chance to see a proud Bessemer, Alabama, talent shine.

Critically acclaimed actor André Holland considers his role as the lead character his most challenging yet and feels he’s been preparing for the role his whole life, in part, because of where he was born and raised.

“Most of what I know about acting, ironically, I learned here [in Bessemer, just outside of Birmingham],” he told The Birmingham Times during a recent visit to the Magic City. “I grew up in a very tight-knit Black community. We spent a lot of time sitting around just listening to old people tell stories. When you really listen, you learn. You start to understand how to tell a story. My ear got tuned to what keeps people interested and engaged.”

Bessemer native André Holland stars in “Exhibiting Forgiveness” which opens in theaters on October 18. (Titus Kaphar, Exhibiting Forgiveness)

“Exhibiting Forgiveness” follows Tarrell, a Black artist on the path to success whose journey is derailed by an unexpected visit from his estranged father, a recovering addict who’s desperate to reconcile. The film was written and directed by artist Titus Kaphar and is loosely based on Kaphar’s life.

Holland grew up in church (his family attended Apostolic Overcoming Holy Church of God Cathedral when it was located in downtown Birmingham and Faith Apostolic Church in the city’s West End community), and that also showed him how stories like Tarrell’s could move people. These storytelling skills have paid off and helped Holland excel in several formidable roles.

In 2014, he portrayed Civil Rights icon Andrew Young in director Ava DuVernay’s powerful historical drama “Selma,” earning him a NAACP Image Award nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture.

From 2014 to 2015, he shared the spotlight with British actor Clive Owen in the Cinemax original drama series “The Knick,” holding his own in a gripping supporting role. In 2016, Holland’s portrayal of Kevin in Barry Jenkins’ “Moonlight” truly put him on the map. The film took home multiple Academy Awards, including the coveted Best Picture, at the 89th annual ceremony. Holland also starred in a production of “Othello” at Shakespeare’s Globe, a renowned theater in London, England, and recently portrayed Black Panther Party founder Huey P. Newton in the television miniseries “The Big Cigar.”

Still, Holland considers “Exhibiting Forgiveness” a major milestone. After premiering at Sundance Film Festival in January 2024 to rave reviews, the film was acquired by Roadside Attractions production company for distribution.

“There have been a lot of cases, earlier in my career, where I’ve been very close to getting things that I really wanted and I felt like I was ready to do but it wasn’t my time,” the actor said. “I have felt for a long time that I’m capable of more than I’ve been given the opportunity to do. So, I feel like I’ve been preparing and ready and waiting and sometimes getting frustrated, wondering when I’m going to get a chance to really do what I feel like I’m here to do. … This movie came along, and I was like, ‘Yeah, that’s something I know I can do.”

The Greatest Night

Though Holland has been on the Oscars stage, performed on Broadway, and been a leading actor at the Globe, he counts a moment on stage at the Alabama Theatre as one of the greatest nights of his career.

It was in August on the opening night of the 26th annual Sidewalk Film Festival in Birmingham. The programming team had selected “Exhibiting Forgiveness” as the opening night film. At the screening, Holland, along with Kaphar, took to the stage of the Alabama Theatre to greet the audience of nearly 2,000 attendees.

“It was unbelievable,” Holland, 44, recalled. “Out of all the movies and shows I’ve done; this was the first time I’ve had something I’ve been able to bring back home in such a big way.”

Friends and family members filled the front rows, and festival attendees all over the theater loudly cheered for Holland as he took the stage. After the screening, he was met with a standing ovation. The film went on to win the Jambor-Franklin Founders Award for Best Narrative Feature Film at the festival.

“It was maybe the most special night of my career,” Holland said, adding that the night was made even more special because it took place in a theatre that Black people couldn’t patronize decades ago. “To come back and to see all those beautiful Black folks in that theater and with us telling a Black story—that was special.”

T. Marie King pushed for “Exhibiting Forgiveness” to be the opening night film for Sidewalk Film Festival. (File)

T. Marie King, who helped with programming for Sidewalk Film Festival, pushed for “Exhibiting Forgiveness” to be the opening night film for this year’s festival.

“From the moment I heard about it, I wanted it for the festival—even before I saw it,” King said of the film. “Once I saw it, I texted my fellow programmer Charlie [Brown Sanders III] and said, ‘We have to get it.’ I knew it would be a heavy film but a timely film. I wanted to share something that gave people permission to leave the pain behind. Titus, [Holland], and the rest of the cast left us a wonderful gift.”

But simply screening the film wasn’t enough. King was determined to bring Holland back to Birmingham, too.

“I wanted [Holland] present at the festival to give him his flowers,” she said. “Too often we miss the window to give people their flowers when they can enjoy them. I wanted him to know his community is proud of him.”

Always eager to give back, Holland told King he also wanted to lead a workshop for aspiring actors during festival weekend. On the Saturday afternoon after the screening of “Exhibiting Forgiveness” nearly 50 people gathered at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute to learn from Holland.

“His success brings attention to our city, but I feel this is just the beginning of what [Holland’s] success can do,” King said. “The vision he has for [the historic Lincoln Theatre, in downtown Bessemer], will bring young people who lack access to other programs an opportunity to discover creative parts of themselves. His success will bring exposure to career opportunities that are center stage and backstage. His success also lets all artists, creatives, actors, filmmakers, and everyone in between know that success is possible because André did it.”

“An Overachiever”

Growing up, Holland, his older sister, Maketha, and his younger sister, Natalie, were involved in a host of extracurricular activities.

“I always tried to expose them to everything out there that was good,” his mother, Mary Holland, said. “They always participated in sports. The girls played softball, and he always played baseball and basketball.”

Mary Holland noticed Andre’s knack for public speaking and memorizing lines as early as his days in preschool at Flint Hill Christian School in McCalla, Alabama. If told by his teacher to memorize the first five verses of Isaiah 53 in the Bible, for instance, he’d memorize the entire chapter.

“He was always an overachiever,” Mary Holland said. “He always loved being in front of the class and showing all that he knew.”

Mary Holland, mother of actor Andre Holland, is part of a group looking to restore the Lincoln Theatre in Bessemer which first opened in 1948 as a cinema or “picture house” to show first-run movies for African American audiences. (Barnett Wright, The Birmingham Times)

After a young André later proved to have good debate skills, too, Mary Holland and her husband, Donald, hoped their son would one day become an attorney.

Nonetheless, when Mary Holland saw in the newspaper that the Town and Gown Theatre (now the Virginia Samford Theatre) in Birmingham was holding auditions, she was eager to take her son downtown to try out.

At first, the showrunners at Town and Gown tried to turn the Hollands away. They felt that André, who was around 8 years old at the time, was too young.

“They did not want to let him audition because they said children as young as he was would not be patient enough and attentive enough to adhere to the training,” Mary Holland recalled. “But I sort of talked them into giving him a try, so they gave him a try and he actually was cast in a play.”

Greatest Teacher

Getting a good academic education was top priority, as well. While André was a student at McAdory Middle School, he took a scholastic aptitude test that determined he was a gifted learner. So, his parents enrolled him in the Shades Valley Resource Learning Center, an enrichment program for gifted students attending Jefferson County Schools.

Eventually, André enrolled at John Carroll Catholic High School and was soon acting in school theater productions. André graduated from John Carroll in 1997, went on to attend Florida State University (FSU), and studied abroad at the FSU London Study Centre. He also earned a Master of Fine Arts degree from New York University in 2006.

Holland credits his home as his greatest teacher. Beyond the early stage experiences at Town and Gown and at school, and in addition to gleaning lessons in storytelling from the elders in his community, growing up in Bessemer taught him how to be a good person.

“It’s surprising how few people understand how important being a good person is to having a career and to being an actor,” André said.

Being raised in and around Bessemer, he learned how to be a good citizen, he said. “I grew to understand what it means to be a member of the community,” André added. “If my bike had a flat, I knew I could take it to my uncle to fix it. If we wanted some collard greens, I knew who had some greens, but I’m going to take them some peas from our garden.”

He believes people are more willing to work with you when you’re a good person that other artists want to be around.

“André is a gifted artist and shows up with a spirit of generosity,” Kaphar said of the actor.

Because he grew up with parents who encouraged discovery and were always eager to introduce him to something new, André Holland was raised to be curious, too.

“The biggest tool you have as an actor is being curious,” André said. “If you’re curious about the world, you learn things, and then you figure out, ‘How can this inform what it is that I’m trying to do?’”

So, every lesson learned can be applied to make his work in a role stronger.

Mary Holland enjoys seeing her son on screen but his stage work is her favorite.

“With plays, you have one chance to get it right,” she said.

Most of all, Mary Holland is proud of how her son selects his roles.

“My husband and I instilled in him to not ever do anything that’s going to embarrass the culture,” she said. “So far, he has taken on roles that have represented the culture well. He chooses a role because it means something to him, it speaks to his heart, and I love that.”

“Exhibiting Forgiveness” — starring André Holland, Andra Day, John Earl Jelks and Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor and directed by Titus Kaphar – opens in theaters nationwide on October 18, 2024.

How Alabama’s First Family of Film Plans to Renovate Bessemer’s Lincoln Theatre

With an impressive resume that includes more than a dozen films, including the Academy Award-winning “Moonlight,” television series like “The Knick” and “The Big Cigar,” and a production of “Othello” at Shakespeare’s Globe in London, England, Andre Holland believes his greatest impact could be in his hometown.

The Bessemer, Alabama, native wants to give children and adults in the Marvel City and surrounding areas the tools they need to make their own artistic dreams come true. That’s why, in 2017, Holland purchased the historic Lincoln Theatre, in downtown Bessemer, and began making plans to restore it as a public event space and cultural asset.

“It’s important that we have something in our community, in Bessemer, that people, young people and adults, can come to and experience what it is to make art and learn how to do it and also see themselves,” Holland told The Birmingham Times during a recent interview.

Leading Role

Holland’s latest film “Exhibiting Forgiveness” hits theaters across the nation on October 18. In it, he takes on the leading role as a Black artist poised for success but grappling with his past as his estranged father comes back into his life seeking reconciliation.

The critically acclaimed actor has also played a leading role in restoring the Lincoln Theatre, which first opened in 1948 as a cinema, or “picture house,” to show first-run movies for African American audiences who, at the time, were prohibited from other theaters in Bessemer and Birmingham.

For many years, the theater drew large crowds in Bessemer. Unfortunately, as the number of moviegoers declined, the Lincoln Theatre had to shut its doors sometime in the late 1970s or early 1980s. Despite being repurposed by various businesses, including as storage for a nearby clothing store, the theater gradually fell into disrepair over the years.

Soon after Holland purchased the Lincoln Theatre, the owner of the nearby the Albano Pharmacy offered to donate that building to help with Holland’s mission to enrich the community with the arts.

Holland’s vision is to restore the Lincoln Theatre to single-screen cinema that will show classic and contemporary films, as well as host educational programming and hands-on workshops for young people about acting, filmmaking, and other genres of the arts.

He dreams of turning the old Albano Pharmacy building into a community center and gallery space and wants to build out a few apartments for visiting artists who will teach workshops to the community.

“The only reason I’m an actor today is because my mom and dad brought me [to Birmingham] to the Town and Gown Theatre, [now the Virginia Samford Theatre], to take summer acting classes,” Holland said. “But there was no such thing that existed in Bessemer and the neighborhoods that were around it.”

Holland, 44, is determined to change that.

A Family Affair

Knowing he couldn’t do this alone, Holland turned to his family for help. Together with his parents, Mary and Donald, and his sister, Natalie, he formed the nonprofit The Holland Project. Following Donald Holland’s passing in 2022, the family’s dedication to restoring the Lincoln Theatre grew even stronger.

Holland’s father would take André to a barbershop next to the Lincoln Theatre when he was a kid. Curious about the boarded-up building, young André learned from this father just how important the theater was to Black residents. His father even shared that he had his first dates at the theater. André has been fascinated with the building ever since.

“That building has been working on him his whole life” said Glenny Brock, a project consultant for The Holland Project.

Brock can relate to the emotional pull Holland feels for the Lincoln Theatre. She had a similar drive that made her instrumental in the restoration of Birmingham’s Lyric Theatre, which reopened in 2016—102 years after its debut.

“I thought I was one and done with the Lyric,” Brock said. “I was not looking for another historic theater in my life.”

But after one meeting with the Holland family, she knew she wanted to be part of the project.

“André has a big vision because, through the arts, has seen a lot of the world,” Brock said. “André has had a pretty remarkable amount of professional, creative, and financial success, and I don’t know of anybody else who, after all, that, would buy an abandoned theater in downtown Bessemer, Alabama.”

Now Brock works closely with Holland’s mother, Mary, on a regular basis. “I admire and respect André, and I have learned a lot from André, but I am deeply invested in this because of Mary,” Brock said.

Before retiring, Mary Holland was a business planner for U.S. Steel, where she worked for 36 years. Those organizational skills are coming in handy as she helps shepherd The Holland Project—but she knows her limits.

“Of all the things I know, one thing I know that I don’t know is fundraising,” Mary Holland said. “I tell people, ‘I could not ask you for five dollars for a Happy Meal if I was about to starve to death.’”

The Holland Project team has partnered with Swell Fundraising for help with its capital campaign. Brock has been helping them write grants, too.

“Mary describes herself all the time as a worker bee,” Brock said of Mary Holland. “She is very direct and focused and loving and very into work. She’s not interested in having a title.”

Mary Holland’s goal is simple: she just wants to bring her son’s vision to life.

“André has a passion, and he wants to expose young people to the arts. It’s a very worthy project, and we want to do it for the community. At 76, the number of movies I will see in the rest of my time on Earth is probably limited,” Mary Holland said candidly.

This project is not for her—it’s for Bessemer.

Even though The Holland Project started because of André Holland’s investment into the Lincoln Theatre, Brock believes none of this would be possible without Mary Holland.

“She has a vision, too, and I think part of that is really changing this idea of Bessemer as an arts desert,” Brock said. “I think, in some ways, André’s path into the arts was totally driven by Mary wanting her kids to have access to everything. And to me the Lincoln is an extension of that. André’s vision for Bessemer is that people like him should have access to the arts in their ZIP code.”

Toyal McLain: The Prayer and Gratitude of a Birmingham Breast Cancer Survivor

By Sym Posey | The Birmingham Times

Toyal McLain has several titles—assistant principal of P.D. Jackson Olin High School; licensed minister at Liberty Baptist Church in Alabaster, Alabama; and owner of McLain Consulting Services, LLC, a consulting business in Hoover, Alabama—but none is more important than breast cancer survivor.

“That’s a title that makes me so overjoyed and brings me to tears,” she said. “December 1 will [mark] nine years that I’ve been cancer-free.”

“Something Is Wrong”

During her school’s Spring Break in 2015, McLain, who was 35 at the time, went for her first ever mammogram.

“My appointment was at 1:30 p.m. at [Brookwood Baptist Medical Center, in Homewood, Alabama], and five hours later they were still evaluating me. My heart and mind said, ‘Something is wrong,’” she recalled.

A week later, McLain said, “My biopsy, [a sample of tissue taken from the body in order to examine it more closely], confirmed that I had triple negative breast cancer [TNBC].”

According to BreastCancer.org, TNBC is an “invasive breast cancer that does not have receptors for the hormone estrogen (called estrogen receptor-negative) … [and] is usually more aggressive, harder to treat, and more likely to come back (recur).

“[The cancer] was so invasive that it started to spread to my left] arm,” McLain said. “I didn’t feel bad. I wasn’t sick. I went for an annual [examination]. I felt a little something under my arm. I thought maybe it [could be a reaction to] deodorant, [but] I told [the doctor] to check it because my mother had breast cancer twice while I was in high school. [I was told] that the insurance would not cover [the mammogram] because I was too young. They said [it would be covered] only if I was diagnosed with breast cancer.”

Cancer.org, the website of the American Cancer Society, points out that “[TNBC] accounts for about 10 to 15 percent of all breast cancers. These cancers tend to be more common in women younger than age 40 [or] who are Black.”

Furthermore, an article from MedicalNewsToday.com notes, “Black women are more than twice as likely as white women to receive a diagnosis of [TNBC, and] mortality rates for TNBC are also higher among Black women than among white women with the same diagnosis.

3 P’s

While waiting at the hospital after her mammogram, McLain said, “From 1 p.m. to 6 p.m. that day, I realized more than ever it was going to take the 3 P’s for handling this life-or-death situation: prayer, prioritizing, and praise. The first P—prayer—had already started.”

She then recalled, “crying, praying, being angry, and crying again,” and her second P—prioritizing—kicked in.

“I got with my doctors and my family and produced a 12-month plan for treatment. I took a leave of absence from work and sat at home to put my health first.

“My support team, [including] my family and church members, all came together to help me in my day-to-day activity,” said McLain, adding that her priority was to “take off work, get my port in, and begin my six months of harsh chemotherapy treatment.”

Within the first months of chemotherapy, she lost every bit of hair on her body. “This was an extremely tough time. I was too weak to get out of bed,” she said. “My husband, [Keith McLain], and [my five] children stepped in to assist me with my health. This was an unfamiliar territory because I had never been sick. I told God, ‘My life is in your hands.’”

While on her breast cancer journey, McLain faced even more adversity: “[After my] six months of chemo was up, my parents’ home caught on fire, my father collapsed from a heart attack in a hotel while their home [in Fairfield, Alabama], was being remodeled, and my mother found a lump in her breast for the third time.”

McLain’s double mastectomy was pushed back until December 2015, after the sudden death of her father in November 2015.

BreastCancer.org explains, “some types of mastectomy remove the entire breast, while other types keep some or all of the breast skin, the nipple, and the areola intact. … Surgically removing one breast is called single (or unilateral) mastectomy. Removing both breasts is called double (or bilateral) mastectomy.

After healing from having both breasts removed and reconstructive surgery, McLain got lymphedema her right arm and hand from having 13 lymph nodes removed. According to WebMD, “Lymphedema is swelling that’s caused by a collection of too much lymph fluid. … Lymph is a protein-rich fluid that moves throughout your body in lymph vessels.

“I wear a compression sleeve and a medical glove every single day now,” McLain said.

Family Love

Her final P — praise — came after her surgery, when doctors sent me home with four tubes coming out of my body,” McLain recalled.
“I had to sleep in a chair for two months. My mother had to move in with me. My [three] sisters rotated a schedule with me. I thought to myself, ‘I feel so bad for anyone and everyone affected by this terrible disease.’ It made me appreciate my family, health, looks, abilities, and accomplishments even more. Even though I still had a long way to go before completing this journey, I was grateful for my life,” she said.

McLain endured 26 rounds of radiation over three months and six months of chemo, surgery, and rounds of radiation in total. She began radiation treatments with her mother, Minister Shelia Cunningham.

“[We went to] the same doctor so we could support each other,” McLain said. “[My mother] is a three-time cancer survivor who is still alive and doing well.”

McLain was born and raised in Birmingham and grew up in the Ensley neighborhood. She graduated from Ensley High School and went on to Miles College, where she earned a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science in 2002 and a Bachelor of Science in Social Science and Secondary Education in 2003.

A mother of five, McLain considers her children her “everything.”

She also is a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, and has worked for more than 20 years with the Birmingham Board of Education, where she has been named Teacher of the Year twice and has been presented several awards, including the Future Principals Award, Distinguished Teacher Strategies Award, District Leadership Award, Superintendent’s Academy Award, and Birmingham City Schools (BCS) Leads Award.

Today, McLain takes tremendous pride in her journey and often shares her experience with breast cancer.

“I am still on a light form of chemo and must take 12 to 15 vitamins a day to keep my energy up [because] I help run a high school of almost 1,000 people daily,” she said. “I have had my breasts, ovaries, uterus, and gallbladder removed, [in addition to] breast reconstructive surgeries. In all I have had seven surgeries since 2015, but I am still grateful for how far I have come.”

Tailgating for Homecoming and Other Big Games in October

0

Scheduled college homecomings in the month of October on the weekends are plentiful not to mention the upcoming Magic City Classic on the 26th. That’s the most popular HBCU Classic in the nation and October is the most popular homecoming month throughout our country. Many will travel by car and others by plane, but many will travel in RVs.

Most of these RVs will park in a designated parking spot adjacent to the various stadiums hosting the homecoming game. The individuals in the RVs will set up tents beside other locals and create a tailgating zone filled with fun, food and fans.

Pre-game tailgating offers the opportunity to bond with fellow sports fans over the grill and cold beverages, but there are a few hazards which should not be overlooked. (Adobe Stock)

Pre-game tailgating offers the opportunity to bond with fellow sports fans over the grill and cold beverages, but there are a few hazards which should not be overlooked. This week’s safety article will continue narrowing its focus on tailgating safety. Our focus last week was on grilling safety. We will continue to expound on this topic.

Many of your tailgating guests will be hungry and begging for your famous grilled meat; it’s tempting to take it off the grill before it’s completely done but doing so is a recipe for disaster. Although meat will continue to cook for a short while after it’s removed from the flame, you should follow well-established guidelines to be sure it is fit to eat. Therefore, make sure you are fully acquainted with these essential guidelines.

Keep an instant-read food thermometer with your tailgating kit and follow temperature guidelines to make sure your food is safely cooked. See these guidelines below:

• Ground meats should reach an internal temperature of at least 160°F
• Steaks should reach at least 145°F
• Pork chops need a temperature of at least 160° F
• Chicken should reach at least 180°F

If you feel that the temperatures are too much to remember, just arm yourself with an instant-read food thermometer and download the MeatTemps App. This way you will never have to worry about under-cooking meat ever again. Your guests will be thankful.

Also keep a fire extinguisher on hand. Most veteran tailgaters know how to prepare for the worst. When grilling, make sure you have a fire extinguisher close by. Do not leave it packed in your car/truck. It should be within hands reach. Besides, even if you do not need it, another tailgater might.

If you are grilling with coal, be sure to douse them with water and let them cool completely before placing them in a container to discard or pack in your vehicle. Be sure the container is heat resistant.

Keeping an Eye on Safety will assist with creating a safe and healthy tailgating party.

“As our Birmingham community continues to grapple with the horrific impacts of gun violence, there is no better time to ensure that our students, faculty, and staff are safe and secure on campus.”
