Birmingham Approves Additional Funding for Homeless — While Clearing Them Out of Downtown Park

The Birmingham Times

Two days after the city’s annual lighting of the Christmas tree ceremony on Sunday night in Linn Park and one week after a “first of its kind” symposium on homelessness that drew 25 different service providers, the City of Birmingham on Tuesday announced that it had removed homeless people who had been camping in the park downtown across from City Hall.

The removal also came at the same time as the City Council approved an additional $1.7 million in funding for a homeless outreach organization.

The removal was done with “compassion and support,” the city said.

“For the last two weeks, city staff have taken complaints regarding unhoused residents in Linn Park,” the city announced Tuesday afternoon. “For several days we sent HEART Birmingham to engage. One person in particular refused to remove his tent.”

Heart Birmingham is an outreach led by Urban Alchemy, which has a contract with the city to respond to homeless issues.

“Please note, tents are not allowed in the city parks without approval from the Park Board,” the city said in its Facebook post Tuesday afternoon.

The city later updated its post with more details: “Over the last two weeks, our teams have been responding to concerns about individuals sheltering in Linn Park. We approach these situations with one guiding principle: every person sleeping outside deserves compassion and support.”

Whie the city said organizations have unsuccessfully tried to provide services to those in Linn Park, individuals in park’s homeless encampment who spoke to CBS 42 said that’s not the case.

Jonathon Riggs, who was living in the encampment, said no one has come out. “They haven’t called us or anything,” Riggs said. “None of them has contacted us at all. No one has told us [where] we need to go ahead and get it done. We’ve asked numerous times every organization out here. We’ve tried and tried, and they just didn’t do it.”

The city said it is committed to ensuring Urban Alchemy and all of the organizations it partners with are delivering the services they are being funded with.

While the park was being cleared a 7-1 vote from the Council provided additional funding to Urban Alchemy. The lone no vote came from Councilor Hunter Williams, who has raised concerns about the homeless outreach organization.

“I think that there’s, in my opinion, a lot left to be desired when we look at the total cost of what this contract is,” Williams said. “When we got data like they’ve only referred four people to a shelter throughout their entire term here and a lot of other data that I found troubling based on the amount of taxpayer money that’s going towards this organization. I think that we need to look really hard at supporting local groups.”

Council President Wardine Alexander said the funding will help Birmingham’s homeless population, particularly the most vulnerable.

“Urban Alchemy provides wraparound services, and what I like best about it is that with primarily we’re focusing on encampments, and this is where often people who are living in these situations,” Alexander said. “They don’t want the help. They have to learn how to gain confidence and respect for the people that are trying to help them.”

Told of the removal of the homeless from Linn Park after the council meeting, Alexander said she was not aware.

The purpose of extending the contract with Urban Alchemy was to help handle such situations, she said. “We can put more forces out there to help people,” Alexander said. “I don’t know the timing and how soon someone will be able to get over to assist.”

Alexander said she would talk to the mayor’s office about the incident.

“I know this has just happened,” she said. “I’ll have to talk to the administration to see how quickly they can engage in situations like this. We want to provide the needs necessary to assist these residents.”

The removal came one week after more than 25 different service providers attended “The State of Homelessness: Redefining Community” symposium at Regions Field designed to focus on responses to Birmingham’s homelessness challenges and to create a path forward.

Local Baseball Legend Gets Exhibit in Downtown Birmingham Courthouse

0

By Sym Posey | The Birmingham Times

Unsung hero and often forgotten Birmingham Industrial League baseball legend Oscar “Butler” Williams was remembered and celebrated on Tuesday by the Negro Southern League Museum (NSLM) in partnership with District 2 Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson.

Every year the Center for Negro League Baseball Research (CNLBR) and NSLM present a Forgotten Hero Award to overlooked players while highlighting their accomplishments. Williams, who died in 2005 at the age of 70, was this year’s recipient.

Over more than 50 years in baseball, Williams became a cornerstone of the Industrial League, a Birmingham institution that shaped generations of players.

Community members, local leaders, former players and family gathered in a foyer outside the Jefferson County Commission chambers on the second floor of the downtown Courthouse during the unveiling of a special exhibit for Williams. It included historic images and interpretive materials curated by the CNLBR, founded by historian Dr. Layton Revel.

“Baseball is a team game and preserving the legacy and the history of baseball is a team effort. It takes all of us,” said Revel. “I think the thing that people need to remember about the Birmingham Industrial League, it goes back to the 1890s. Baseball from the 1890s to today was an important part of the Birmingham community.”

Baseball has always occupied a unique place in Birmingham’s Black history—a thread woven through generations of families, neighborhoods, and workplaces. The sport was one of the primary arenas where Black talent, leadership, and pride could flourish.

Revel added, “It was an important part of everyone’s life, the companies that sponsored it, and over the years the Birmingham Industrial League has brought up a significant number of players who went to play in the Negro leagues, that went on to play in organized baseball. It’s preserving the history of the game and [Williams] spent over 50 years of his life dedicated to it … “

Those in attendance included two of his sons, Oscar Williams Jr. and Richmond Williams, and his great- grandson, Jarvis Williams, who were presented with a plaque by Tyson. Jarvis Williams said his great grandfather’s legacy carries on.

From left; Richmond Williams (son of Oscar Butler Williams); Jarvis Williams (great-grandson) and Oscar Williams Jr. as the baseball great is remembered and honored at the Jefferson County Courthouse. (Sym Posey, The Birmingham Times)

“We are still actively playing out at Ensley Park using the ‘Butler Bombers’ to respect his name,” said Jarvis Williams. “Growing up, we pushed the issue for baseball … it’s important to keep these stories alive because a lot of the kids in Black neighborhoods have forgotten about baseball.  It’s great for the kids. It’s great for the public to understand what’s going on to also see that it can be great things done within baseball.”

A standout football player and member of the Miles College Athletic Hall of Fame, Oscar “Butler” Williams built an equally impressive career in baseball—one that spanned more than half a century and left a lasting mark on the city’s sports culture.

The Industrial League, founded in the late 1800s amid segregation and later evolving into a community-based system, served as far more than a recreational outlet. It was a proving ground—where elite-level athletes sharpened their abilities and often advanced to careers in Major League Baseball, the Negro Major Leagues, or high-performing industrial and military teams.

Honoring Williams is “an acknowledgment not only of one man’s achievements, but of a community’s heritage,” Tyson said on Tuesday.

‘We Knew From the First Date That We Were Going to Marry Each Other’

BY JE’DON HOLLOWAY-TALLEY | Special to the Birmingham Times

ISAAC & JASMINE JONES

Live: Leeds

Married: Nov. 20, 2008

Met: April 2004, at a friend’s house in East Lake. Jasmine said her next-door neighbor’s house was the place to hang out and one evening when she dropped by Isaac was there playing basketball with the guys. “And the first time I saw him, I was like ‘oh my God, he is so cute,’” Jasmine laughed.

Isaac said one of the guys had a crush on Jasmine too and was “blocking. And even though they [the neighbor and Jasmine] never dated, he was kinda staking his claim and I didn’t want to break bro code. And being the respectable guy that I am, I hung back and peeped things out first. And plus, I was new to the neighborhood, so I took it easy,” he said.

Their chemistry “was definitely a slow burn,” said Jasmine. “I would throw out little hints letting him know that I liked him, and he was definitely picking up what I was putting down because he would flirt back a little, but I didn’t know that there was a whole blockage thing going on.”

For the next four years, Jasmine and Isaac developed a friendship and in February 2008, things between them picked up.

“One night, I went next door thinking it was just going to be a girl’s night, but the whole friend group was there. And when I saw Isaac that night, it was like the first time I saw him,” Jasmine said, “it was all fire, the chemistry was thick.  And to get his attention, I took something of his and [played keep away] so that he’d have to chase me for it, and I ran outside and we ended up sitting in my car and talking for three hours.”

Isaac said the connection was strong but “because I was raised right, I was playing it cool, I didn’t want to be too aggressive, but I followed her outside…  and to get my stuff back, I had to hug up on her. We were talking and told each other that we had interest, and we were looking at the stars through her sunroof and listening to music. It was a vibe,” he said. “And to test the theory of how interested she was, I made the executive decision to lean in for a kiss, and I figured if she kissed me back then I know it’s real. And the kiss was real, and from that moment on we were locked in.”

First date: March 2008, at the Cheesecake Factory at the Summit. To seal the deal and show Jasmine how he treats his lady, Isaac said he pulled out all the stops for their first date.

“When he asked me out and said he was taking me to the Cheesecake Factory, I was like ‘Ooooh, he got moneeey? I can get a meal, and a slice of cheesecake at the same time?’ And you know back then, at that age [early 20s], going to the Cheesecake Factory was like going to Perry’s Steakhouse,” Jasmine laughed.

“I was a young hardworking man. I knew how to get the money, and I wasn’t afraid to splurge on my lady,” said Isaac.

Isaac and Jasmine Jones met in 2004 at a friend’s house in East Lake. The couple married in 2008. (Provided Photos)

The turn: That night at Cheesecake Factory. “I didn’t want to take her out and continue spending time together without knowing what we were to each other because after we kissed, I wanted to lock her down,” he said. “She had a lot of other love interests, and I wanted her to close all those doors and make her mine. So that night, I said, ‘since we have all this chemistry we might as well go on and make it official,’ and asked her if she would like to be my lady, and she said ‘yes.’

The proposal: “We knew from the first date that we were going to marry each other. We were young and in our early 20’s, and our friends were still out in the streets and we didn’t want anyone trying to talk us out of our decision to get married, or in our business,” Jasmine said. “So we only told our family and no one objected. Of course, they knew how we felt about each other, and my dad is a pastor, so he was all for it and he agreed to marry us.”

“Her father realized I was a good kid and that I wasn’t going anywhere. He said his spirit agreed with it, and after they asked us if we were sure, they were OK with it,” Isaac said.

The wedding: At Jasmine’s parents’ home in Center Point. They had an intimate wedding with only immediate family. It was officiated by Jasmine’s father, Pastor Fred Hill, of Greater Refuge Church in Pleasant Grove. Jasmine wore a long white skirt, and a winter white sweater accented with pink, and Isaac wore a white suit.

Most memorable for the bride was realizing how their families brought their night together. “For me, that whole night was special for the fact that each of our families contributed to the wedding,” Jasmine said. “My mom did the cooking, Isaac’s mom did the baking, his dad sang ‘The Lord’s Prayer’ during the ceremony, my dad officiated, and Isaac’s grandmother gave the official blessing and [gifted us] a family heirloom. And looking at how everything came together so perfectly, I was just overwhelmed with gratitude.”

Most memorable for the groom was a moment with his grandmother. “My grandmother has glaucoma, so she’s blind,” Isaac said. “And some of Jazz’s friends [neighbors who were not invited to the wedding] were outside and came in unexpectedly. And my grandmother, being blind, didn’t realize they weren’t family and just started talking and told them, ‘we’re just sitting here at Isaac and Jasmine’s wedding’, and I was like ‘grandma.’ I said, ‘you weren’t supposed to tell them that, they weren’t invited. And she said, ‘you know I’m blind, I can’t see who I’m talking to. Oh well, it’s out now, they may as well stay and have a cookie’, and we started laughing.”

Words of wisdom: “Keep it fresh, keep dating, never lose the foundation of what got you guys to where you are,” Issac said. “Those are the important things that continue to elevate your union.”

“Keep God in the center, He’s the anchor that holds it steady,” Jasmine said. “Don’t get too engulfed in being husband and wife that you forget to be each other’s friend and safe place, because that’s the foundation of your marriage. Always be a united front, one band, one sound. Discuss your differences in private but cover one another in public.”

“And for any future couples that are getting married, if you’re looking for a wedding singer, I got you covered,” Isaac said. “I love writing music about love and I’ll create a personalized song about your love and sing it at your wedding.”

You can contact Isaac via social media @isaacjmusic on all platforms.

Happily ever after: The Jones’ attend Tower of Prayer Church in Leeds, where both serve in the music ministry, Jasmine as minister, and Isaac in the men’s ministry. They have four daughters, Tamya, 16, Kylee, 13, and twins, Zoey and Zariah, 12.

Jasmine, 37, is an East Lake native, and a Parkway Christian Academy grad. She is currently enrolled at Purdue Global University where she is earning bachelor’s degree in communications and works as a patient coordinator for Radius Physical Therapy in Trussville and owns a home-based baking business called “Jazzy’s Pies.”

Isaac, 37, is an East Lake native, and Hewitt Trussville High School grad. He is a recording artist and songwriter where he serves as the creative music director for Black Smoke Music Group and curates educational songs and tunes for a cartoon called the Hip-hop Boobly Show that can be streamed on YouTube, Instagram, Facebook, and more.

A Conversation with Alabama’s Youngest and First Black Poet Laureate as Her Term Comes to an End

By Javacia Harris Bowser | For the Birmingham Times

At the end of the year, Ashley M. Jones’ time as Alabama’s youngest and first Black poet laureate will come to a close. Over the past four years, Jones has boldly stepped into her role as the state’s ambassador for poetry and helped put both poetry and Alabama in the national spotlight.

One of the most notable moments of her tenure, which began Jan. 1, 2022, was a live interview on ABC’s “Good Morning America.”

“I will never get over that,” she told The Birmingham Times. “I truly thought they were kidding when they emailed me.”

Jones, now 35, was featured in a Secret deodorant commercial in which she discussed the importance of women speaking out and emphasized that Black women deserved to be loved. She was also featured on Alabama Public Television (APT), the state’s Public Broadcasting Service (PBS) affiliate.

“To make it on PBS, I’m good for the rest of my life,” Jones said.

Poetry for the People

Jones’ focus, however, has always been on bringing poetry to the people. During her time as poet laureate, she’s led workshops across the state and beyond.

“They’re not always writing groups,” she said. “I’ve spoken to seminary students, businesspeople, children, older people, all kinds of people. And I bring the same energy to every group.”

Jones also established the Alabama Poetry Delegation (APD), a leadership and service project that empowered five Alabama-based poets to create events and programming for its multi-county regions.

“It’s amazing just to understand that poetry can do so much in people’s lives,” Jones said. “It’s not just on the page.”

Poetry on the Page

Despite being busy as poet laureate, Jones has composed and performed original work at major events, such as 2022 Birmingham World Games. Also during her tenure, she published two poetry collections—“Reparations Now!” and most recently “Lullaby for the Grieving,” which explores the grief of losing her father and the political grief of being a Black woman in the South.

And she’s juggled all of this while being both a teacher and a student. Formerly a creative writing instructor at the Alabama School of Fine Arts, Jones is currently the Associate Director of the University Honors Program at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) and a Ph.D. student in English at Old Dominion University in Norfolk, Virginia.

Now, as the end of her tenure approaches, Jones is looking forward to Alabama’s incoming poet laureate, Jacqueline Allen Trimble of Montgomery, who will take the title in January 2026.

“I really feel like she is the poet we need for this moment,” Jones said of Trimble. “She is unapologetic. She is straight up—full honesty, full compassion, the smartest person ever—and she’s been such an example to me for as long as I’ve known her.”

Jones in Her Own Words

In her final days as Alabama’s poet laureate, Jones sat down with The Birmingham Times to reflect on the past four years and to discuss what’s next for this poet of the people.

The Birmingham Times (BT): As you look back over the past four years, what makes you most proud?

Ashley M. Jones (AMJ): I have remained myself the entire time. When I learned that I was the first person of color and the youngest person, I felt very nervous that I was going to let people down and that just being weird little old me was not going to be enough for people.

Being a first is an insane experience that I never thought I would have, and I’m obviously proud to have broken the barrier, but I wish somebody else had done it 50 years ago.

I was very anxious that maybe I wouldn’t measure up to the expectations people had of me, but I remembered that people chose me because I was me. There was not this other version of me that people thought I was.

Also, having so much attention on you is a very strange experience. I could see how somebody could change or lose sight of the reason for it all. Having a national profile, which I’m grateful for, it could be easy for me to turn my back on my actual home, but it’s been really exciting for me to keep Alabama squarely in my view. No matter where I am, I’m always going to remember this place and bring us wherever I’m going.

BT: What picture of Alabama do you hope to paint with your poems?

AMJ: Hopefully a real one. I don’t think we have to play pretend about what is happening or what has happened. So, I hope that with my poems I can show that Alabama is a beautiful place but not a blameless place. We can appreciate all of the good stuff that’s here—our families, the trees, the fruits, the grass, all of that. And we can understand that people who live here have done some crazy stuff to other people, and that’s the picture I’m always trying to paint. We are just like every other state in the United States. We are not different or worse somehow.

And there’s so much goodness in this state. We have such a great history of revolution. In [my latest] book, I write about John Lewis and Bryan Stevenson. We can’t condemn this state completely because that would mean we’re condemning them and what they stood for and stand for. [Born near Troy, Alabama, Lewis served in the U.S. House of Representatives for Georgia’s 5th congressional district from 1987 until his death in 2020. Stevenson is the founder of the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI), an organization based in Montgomery, Alabama, that provides representation to individuals who have been denied fair trials.]

I want people to know that not everybody in Alabama thinks the same. I hope people can see this place for what it actually is, instead of what they need it to be to feel better about themselves.

BT: What advice would you give to artists and arts organizations facing funding cuts?

AMJ: This is a time when we have to lean on each other, and I don’t just mean financially. We all have to be willing to be advocates right now. There are still resources out there. They may not be the ones we’re used to getting, but we do have to put ourselves out there a little bit and see what there is. … We also have to talk to each other and see how we can pool those resources. My biggest advice, honestly, for people who are scrambling, is to find community.

BT: What’s next for you?

AMJ: I have another book coming out in April. This is my first prose book. It’s called “What the Mirror Said: The Necessity of Black Women in Poetry.” It combines personal essay with close reading. There’s something for the academic types and something for the non-academic types. I explore nine Black women poets who’ve influenced my life in person or on page or both.

I want to finish my degree, hopefully in the next five years. I want to keep teaching and writing. And I want to get married, have babies, and learn how to rest.

Birmingham’s Sixth Avenue Baptist Church Increases Youth Outreach with Multi-Million Dollar Campus Expansion

Members of a landmark Birmingham church are marking another phase of their history with the opening of a multi-million-dollar addition.

Sixth Avenue Baptist Church on Sunday celebrated the opening of its campus expansion that leaders say will help them offer enhanced services to its congregation and neighboring community, particularly the youth.

“This is our attempt to reach out to those who are in our community,” said the Rev. John L. Cantelow III in a video that previewed the expansion.

“We’ve got a community right down here in Titusville that could definitely use this kind of positive reinforcement, not only about who they are as children, but about who the Lord is.”

The expansion includes new square footage in addition to renovations to existing spaces such as the fellowship hall and nursery.

A ribbon cutting ceremony began following the 9:30 a.m. worship service at the church located at 1101 Martin Luther King Jr. Drive.

“I see hope, inspiration, growth, and I really see history alive and history still making a difference,” said Leticia Watkins Harvill, the church’s director of children and youth.

Harvill said the longtime community mission of the church including tutoring, food drives and programs for children and youth will be bolstered with the new facilities.

Sixth Avenue Baptist Church was established in 1881. The church has been in its current location since 1970.

“Seeing this type of expansion lets us know that our work is still important and we’re still here for our community,” Harvill said.

UAB Researcher Awarded $2M to Study Acute and Chronic Pain Patients Face After Surgery

Overstreet Demario 01Demario Overstreet, Ph.D., an assistant professor in the University of Alabama at Birmingham Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery, has been awarded substantial funding through the National Institutes of Health for his innovative research program, titled “Contemporary human models of postoperative pain: A biopsychosocial investigation in general surgery.”

The award, totaling over $2 million through 2030, will support Overstreet’s investigation aimed at uncovering the factors that determine patients’ experiences of acute and chronic pain during their healing journeys after surgery. The primary focus of the research is to better understand the transition from acute to chronic pain.

“This research will help us rethink the healing process for patients and explore how pain manifests differently across individuals,” Overstreet said. “It provides an opportunity to develop translational, evidence-based strategies to predict, prevent and treat postoperative pain, ultimately improving the quality of life for the surgical patients we serve.”

Overstreet explicitly investigates factors often undetectable by traditional scans or testing methodologies. His research examines biomarkers of inflammation and pain regulation, employs quantitative sensory testing, integrates psychosocial assessments, and considers social determinants of health that contribute to variations in postoperative pain and recovery.

This marks Overstreet’s fifth major NIH award. He has received continuous support since 2018, including the predoctoral NIH Health Services Research T-32 Service Award (2018-2021). This highly selective program recognizes trainees whose scholarship is poised to shape the nation’s health-related research for generations to come.

A prolific contributor to pain literature, recent scholarship from Overstreet has examined biopsychosocial factors that are associated with complications after colorectal surgery, methodologies of quantitative sensory testing, the potential role of adverse childhood experience and emotion dysregulation in modulating pain, and most notably, inflammatory mediators that underlie the pain experience in idiopathic chronic low-back pain.

Overstreet expresses his gratitude to co-investigators Lily Gutnik, M.D., and Daniel Chu, M.D., for their essential support and clinical expertise, which will be crucial for carrying out this work in mastectomy and colorectal surgery.

“Dr. Overstreet is providing invaluable insights into how we approach pain in the post-operative setting,” said Chu, director of the Division of Gastrointestinal Surgery. “His research is pivotal in helping surgeon-scientists shape the methodologies we use to help patients feel better faster and sustain better surgical outcomes.”

Jefferson County to Honor Baseball Great from Birmingham’s Industrial League

The Birmingham Times

The Negro Southern League Museum, in partnership with district 2 Jefferson County Commissioner Sheila Tyson will honor Oscar “Butler” Williams—one of the most accomplished and versatile talents to emerge from Birmingham’s storied Industrial League.

The event will be held Tuesday, Dec. 9, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the foyer outside the Jefferson County Commission Chambers. This public reception provides residents an opportunity to rediscover an essential chapter of Birmingham’s baseball legacy.

Oscar “Butler” Williams represents the extraordinary skill, athleticism, and determination found throughout the Birmingham area—an area that shaped generations of local athletes and laid the foundation for some of the biggest names in baseball and football.  Williams is also a member of the Miles College Athletic Hall of Fame as a standout football player.

Over the course of more than 50 years, Williams became a cornerstone of Birmingham’s rich industrial league baseball tradition. Through changing times and evolving names, he remained the constant presence in the leagues, on the field and in the dugout, building a reputation for excellence, leadership, and heart.

Under his direction the Stockholm team earned the honor of competing in four national baseball championship tournaments, a testament to Butler’s enduring commitment to the game and the men who played alongside him.

The Industrial League was more than a recreational outlet; it was a proving ground. Its players competed at elite levels and often went on to careers in Major League Baseball, the Negro Major Leagues, and prominent industrial and military teams. These leagues span from the segregated industrial teams of the late 1800’s to the present day community leagues that still carry industrial names.

The exhibit features historical images and interpretive material curated by the Center for Negro League Baseball Research. Dr. Layton Revel, Founder and Director of the CNLBR, will oversee the installation.  He has also authored a complimentary narrative revealing important highlights of the life of Williams.

This special addition will be later added to the full Birmingham Industrial League Traveling Exhibit which gives the public and opportunity to learn more about the impact of the Industrial Leagues on Birmingham’s workforce, neighborhoods, and athletic development.

Williams’s affiliation with the Industrial League stands alongside the early careers of iconic athletes such as:

  • Willie Mays, Fairfield native and baseball legend
  • Bo Jackson, Bessemer-born multi-sport superstar
  • Ron “Papa Jack” Jackson, World Series–winning coach, star player, and long-time mentor to countless Birmingham youth
