As a Family Caregiver, ‘New Challenges, New Joys’ Every Day for Birmingham’s Gwendolyn Brown

When you meet Gwendolyn Brown, you are greeted by warmth and determination that radiates from every word. As the mom of 26-year-old Erech, who is autistic, and 19-year-old Jakkob, who lives with sickle cell disease, Brown’s life is a testament to resilience, advocacy, love, and caregiving.

“Every day brings new challenges and new joys,” said Brown. “Motherhood and caregiving have taught me patience, resilience, and the importance of community.”

Her love of family has not only shaped her personal life but also inspired her professional calling as Regional Autism Network Family Navigator for the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) Civitan-Sparks Clinic.

By definition, a caregiver is someone who provides assistance and support to an individual who is unable to fully care for themselves, whether due to age, illness, or disability — and November is National Family Caregivers Month, a time to recognize and honor those who support loved ones with chronic illnesses, disabilities, or other needs.

A report released in July 2025 by AARP and the National Alliance for Caregiving shows that nearly one in four adults, 63 million Americans, provided care for an adult or child with a complex medical condition or disability in the past year.

That is an increase of 20 million over the last 10 years, and this number is expected to continue to increase as the population ages. African American families have the highest prevalence of caregiving in the U.S. and are often in high-intensity roles that require regular interaction with health care providers. They also tend to be younger caregivers and more often have children at home while caregiving.

Mental Health as a Caregiver

While caring for others, caregivers must be cognizant of their own needs, as well.

Brown said, “When I started this journey, nobody ever addressed my mental health. Had it not been for my faith, I’m not too sure I would have been here. I’ve had those moments when I felt as if I was losing my mind, when I didn’t have friends, when I lost friends, lost family members, and just felt myself feeling as if I was alone. … It was stressful. It was challenging. I didn’t know if I was coming or going sometimes, didn’t want to wake up in the morning because I was like, ‘How am I going to be able to handle this?”

Brown added that it’s important for caregivers to carve out time for themselves.

“You have to try to accept that, despite all of the things we may try to do, … we are human and we are not going to be able to fix it all in one day, one week, or one month. Once you accept that, [take time to] love yourself, cater to yourself, have moments when you just stop,” she said.

Meeting families who were in caregiving roles similar to hers served as a “life support,” said Brown.

“Even if we had totally different disability diagnoses, there was a connection through families that made a world of difference to my mental health,” she said.

Early in her journey, Brown didn’t know about some of the groups that were out there: “It’s important to get [people] connected to support groups to help,” she said. “And we cannot leave out the faith-based families because some of them are looking for places [where] they can take their kids, and that may be a challenge for them.”

Caregivers can be professionals, such as nurses or aides, but many are family members who step into this role out of necessity and love, like Brown. They help with daily activities, emotional support, medical management, and advocacy, often sacrificing their own needs to ensure the well-being of those in their care.

As the Regional Autism Navigator for UAB’s Civitan-Sparks Clinic, Brown works with families of loved ones while also caring for her sons, Erech and Jakkob.

For Erech, she must be attuned to his sensory sensitivities, communication challenges, and need for routine, said Brown, who advocates for his education, ensures that therapies are in place, and provides emotional security. Her days are filled with teaching, comforting, and sometimes simply being present when the world feels too much for him.

“With Erech, had I not chosen to advocate for him to be included with his peers, to not stay in what I refer to as a segregated classroom, his peers would not have been able to have an opportunity to know him. He would not have been able to grow to the extent that he has grown and excel as an adult,” said Brown.

Jakkob’s journey is marked by medical appointments, pain management, and vigilance for complications. Sickle cell disease can mean frequent hospital visits and unpredictable health crises.

“For Jakkob, had we not helped and advocated, his peers would not have known that his illness was not contagious. They would not have known to include him. They would not have known to protect him the moment that maybe he didn’t feel like protecting himself,” said Brown “It caused us to educate the world, which also created a pathway for others that they were going to meet along this journey.”

She added, “We have an autistic child who was in a school system, which meant tons of school meetings, [Individual Education Plan (IEP)] meetings, battling the school system. … Then we had the other child who, because of his sickle cell, was having crisis moments, so we were running into the emergency room in the wee hours of the morning and just trying to figure out how to do what we need to do and still survive and thrive.”

The Eyes of Caregiver Mother

Originally from Atmore, Alabama, Brown began her family in Florida before moving to Helena, Alabama.

“We moved from Florida back toward home because we needed help. We didn’t have enough help there as far as somebody that could give us a break,” she said.

“My husband and I had to learn to really be willing to accept help, to be willing to share our story in order to make connections, because at first we didn’t. We didn’t know who really to talk to, who would not judge us, and who would just, even if they didn’t understand, be willing to say, ‘I will be there for you all, when I can,’” said Brown.

“In recognizing the sacrifices and triumphs of caregivers, especially mothers who juggle multiple roles for their children, we are reminded of the importance of support, understanding, and empathy in our communities,” she continued. “Their stories inspire us to see caregiving not just as a duty, but as a profound act of love.

“Being aware of how to advocate and work past or through the fear of advocating. Learning how to advocate and having the mental health support along the journey,” said Brown.

SNAP Support Applications Now Open for Birmingham Families

The City of Birmingham, in partnership with the United Way of Central Alabama, is now accepting pre-registration forms for residents affected by the recent delay or suspension of their SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program) benefits.

The House on Wednesday adopted a plan to reopen the government and sent it to President Donald Trump, which he signed.

This $1 million local relief effort, approved by Mayor Randall L. Woodfin and the Birmingham City Council, is designed to ensure Birmingham families don’t face going without food or essential resources as the federal government grinds back to normal.

Residents needing support can visit birminghamal.gov/bhamready to complete the pre-registration form or text SNAP to 62644 to receive the link directly. Details about eligibility and the application process are available on the site.

“Birmingham takes care of its own,” said Mayor Woodfin. “Although the government shutdown has officially ended, we recognize that many families are still facing uncertainty and hardship because of the SNAP delays. This funding is about stepping up—making sure no child, elder, or neighbor in our community goes hungry while we wait for federal action.”

Eligible Birmingham residents — those living within city limits and benefits-eligible as of November 1, 2025 — will receive a $100 unrestricted gift card per SNAP account holder.

  1. SCOPE OF WORK:

 

The scope of work includes replacement of a linear accelerator and associated equipment, which includes modifying Mechanical, Electrical, and Plumbing as required. The project will be performed in an occupied hospital and is located on the 1st Floor of the UAB Kirklin Clinic at Acton Road, so particular and specific care will be required to limit disturbances, coordinate shutdowns, and follow strict Infection Control and Interim Life Safety Measures (ICRA/ILSM) requirements for the protection of patients, family, and staff. Adjacent spaces are sensitive to noise, vibrations, and dust and will require implementation of measures to mitigate these issues. General Contractors seeking to be pre-qualified must have demonstrable knowledge and experience as a General Contractor (not as CM) with similar Imaging and Operating Room projects completed in an operating Hospital clinical environment, and must demonstrate experience with the implementation, monitoring and management of Infection Control Measures and Interim Life Safety Measures as a General Contractor on similar projects.   1. PRIME GENERAL CONTRACTOR BIDDER PRE-

 

QUALIFICATIONS:

 

Prime General Contractor’s bidders interested in submitting a proposal must apply for pre-qualification and must be licensed under the Provision of Title 34, Chapter 8, and Code of Alabama, 1975. A copy of current Alabama Contractors license is to be included in pre-qualification submittal.

 

Only Prime Contractor bidders who have completed the pre-qualification process and that have been approved will be eligible to submit a bid for the Project.

 

Prospective Bidder’s Pre-qualification Package must be received by the Owner’s Project Manager no later than 2:00pm local time on Tuesday, November 18, 2025 after which no further requests will be considered.

The Contractor may apply for an extension of time in accordance with the provisions of the Contract; however, such an extension must be approved prior to the Contract Completion Date to avoid the imposition of liquidated damages.

INVITATION TO BID

 

The City of Birmingham will accept sealed bids for Ensley Tree Canopy Project # ENG 2025-007. Bids will be received by the City Engineer in Suite 220 of City Hall, Birmingham, Alabama until Wednesday, December 3, 2025, by 2:00 p.m. Sealed bids will be time-stamped at the time of arrival. Bids will then be publicly opened and read in Suite 220 Conference Room beginning at 2:00 pm. It is the bidder’s responsibility to make sure that the bid is in the possession of the City Engineer on or before time set for opening. Bids received after this time will not be considered. This is a streetscape project in the Glen Iris Neighborhood. It is primarily pedestrian traffic signal installation, and includes sidewalks, curbs, ADA ramps, and striping to reduce the pedestrian crossing distance and slow traffic in the area. The primary items of work are approximately: 4” Concrete Sidewalks (340 SY), 6” Heavy Duty Concrete Paving (120 SY), 18” Concrete Curb & Gutter (550 LF), 6” Concrete Curb (200 LF), and items relating to installation of pedestrian signals.

 

 

 

A MANDATORY PRE-BID CONFERENCE will be held on Wednesday, November 19, 2025, at 2:00 pm (CST) in Conference Room 220 City Hall.

 

 

 

Bid documents are open to public inspection at the Office of the City Engineer in the Department of Capital Projects — Suite 220 of City Hall, 710 20th Street North, Birmingham, AL 35203.Bid documents may be viewed and purchased through the City of Birmingham online plan room site at https://www.birminghamplanroom.com/ under the above project name. Bid bonds of the three (3) lowest bidders will be held for a period of ninety (90) days unless bidders agree, in writing, to a longer period of time. A performance bond equal to 100% of the contract amount and a payment bond equal to 100% of the contract amount will be required of the successful bidder during the award process. The Housing Authority of the Birmingham District (HABD) will be accepting applications for the project-based waiting list, Southtown Senior, for two bedrooms only. Southtown Senior is located at 920 24th Street S, Birmingham, AL 35205. This building is for seniors age 62 or older. At least one household member must be 62 or older. All household members have to be adults. No minors can reside at this site.

The HABD will refer families from the project-based waiting list to the Southtown Senior “owner” to fill their vacancies.

Former U.S. Attorney General Eric Holder Jr. has been named recipient of the prestigious 2025 Fred L. Shuttlesworth Human Rights Award, the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute (BCRI) announced this morning.

The award represents BCRI’s highest honor, bestowed upon national and international leaders advancing justice, equality, and human dignity.

As Attorney General under President Barack Obama, Holder prioritized Civil Rights enforcement, took bold steps to protect voting rights, reduced sentencing disparities, and addressed systemic inequities in the justice system. His tenure was marked by efforts to defend marriage equality and challenge voter suppression.

Today, Holder continues to champion democracy as Chairman of the National Democratic Redistricting Committee (NDRC), ensuring fair maps and protecting every citizen’s right to vote. His life’s work reflects principled leadership and the enduring fight for Civil Rights.

Holder will be recognized during the BCRI’s 33rd Anniversary Celebration on Thursday, December 11, 2025 at the downtown Sheraton Hotel. This milestone occasion themed “Defending Legacy” will bring together foot soldiers, students, educators, civic and business leaders and partners from across the country to celebrate BCRI’s mission.

“Rev. Fred Shuttlesworth paved the way for progress so that generations to come could walk in freedom. The Need Remains: Birmingham City Council Organizing Multiple Food Giveaways

Over the course of the next week, there will be several opportunities for residents to receive free food boxes at events organized by Birmingham City Councilors.

Even as federal government shutdown ended Wednesday the impact is still being felt by over 23,000 households in Birmingham that rely on SNAP benefits, many families are in need of assistance, especially with Thanksgiving coming up. There will be five food giveaways hosted by multiple Council offices in the coming days.

Earlier this month the Council voted to provide $1 million in funding to assist families who are being impacted by the disruption of SNAP benefits during the federal government shutdown; United Way of Central Alabama is distributing those food assistance funds.

In addition to that, there are multiple partnerships that are providing residents with wraparound services and assistance programs.

Here are the details of those upcoming giveaways:

Timeline for SNAP Benefits Still Uncertain, Even As Government Reopens

The House on Wednesday adopted a plan to reopen and sent it to President Donald Trump. which he signed.

One provision calls for restarting the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, but even that doesn’t resolve when the benefits will be loaded onto the debit cards beneficiaries use to buy groceries.

A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Agriculture, which runs the program, said in an email Wednesday that funds could be available “upon the government reopening, within 24 hours for most states.” The department didn’t immediately answer questions about where it might take longer — or whether the 24-hour timeline applies to when money would be available to states or loaded onto debit cards used by beneficiaries.

There has been a series of court battles over the fate of the largest government food program, which serves about 1 in 8 Americans.

Here are things to know about how it could go.

When SNAP funds become available could vary by state

Seesawing court rulings and messages from the USDA have meant that beneficiaries in some states already have received their full monthly allocations while in others they have received nothing. Some states have issued partial payments.

States say it’s faster to provide full benefits than it is to do the calculations and computer programming required for partial amounts.

At least 19 states plus the District of Columbia issued full benefits to at least some recipients last week, an Associated Press tally found. Many of them managed to do it in a day or so, in the narrow window between the Nov. 6 court ruling that required the federal government to make full payments and one Nov. 7 by the U.S. Supreme Court that stopped it.

Jessica Garon, a spokesperson for the American Public Human Services Association, said she anticipates most states will be able to issue full benefits within three days after they’re given the go-ahead, but that it might take a week for others.Experts say the states that have sent no November benefits already, such as South Carolina and West Virginia, will likely be the quickest.

But there’s a complication. Sixteen states have loaded the EBT cards used in SNAP with partial benefits. Carolyn Vega, a policy analyst with the advocacy group Share Our Strength said some of those states might run into technical hurdles to issue the remaining amount.

Delays in benefits can be a problem for recipients

About 42 million lower-income Americans receive SNAP benefits, on average about $190 monthly per person. Many say the benefits don’t and aren’t intended to cover the full cost of groceries in a regular month, even with careful budgeting.

It’s worse when benefits are delayed.

Doretha Washington, 41, of St. Louis, and her husband have themselves and six children to feed and not enough money to cover that cost. Her husband works servicing heating and cooling systems, but the family still needs SNAP to get by. They had received nothing in November, although Missouri said Tuesday that partial benefits would be issued.

“Now it’s making things difficult because we can’t pay our bills in full and keep food in here,” Washington said this week. “I’m down to three days of food and trying to figure out what to do.”

She has been rationing what they have.

Other people have turned to food charities but are sometimes finding long lines and low supplies.

Cutting off funds left state governments scrambling

The USDA told states Oct. 24 that it would not fund the program for November if the shutdown continued. That left states scrambling. Most Democratic-led states sued to have the funding restored.

Some Democratic and Republican-led states launched efforts to pay for SNAP benefits using state money, boost food banks and deploy the National Guard to help with food distribution. Another group of states used their money allotted for SNAP benefits only after a judge ordered the Trump administration to cover the full cost for the month.

The legislation to reopen the government passed by the Senate on Monday calls for states to be reimbursed for spending their funds to run programs usually paid for by the federal government.

It’s not immediately clear, though, which situations might qualify in the case of SNAP.

In the meantime, the USDA told states Tuesday that it would reimburse them for paying out partial SNAP benefits under a system where recipients get up to 65% of their regular allocations — and even states that paid the full amount can receive partial reimbursements. It also said it would not reduce the amount on cards for recipients in states that paid full amounts.

Democratic-led states that sued for benefits to be made available said in a filing Wednesday that the late-arriving information “illustrates the chaos and confusion occasioned by USDA’s multiple, conflicting guidance documents.”

How Birmingham Architect Jeremy Cutts Plans to Reshape the Future of Multifamily Housing

Asked a question most students get while in elementary or middle school — “What do you want to be when you grow up?” — Jeremy Cutts remembers saying he “wasn’t really sure.” But that would soon change in a major way.

“My dad was an electrical engineer, so I figured maybe that. But then somebody said to me, ‘Hey, man, you like to draw and you’re good at math. Have you ever thought about being an architect?’”

Cutts said he looked up the career of an architect and figured it was something he’d like and “the rest is history,” he told The Birmingham Times.

“I made the decision that I [was] going to go for it, and it turned out to be something that I love,” he added. “I was fortunate in that regard.”

Cutts is an Auburn University graduate and Associate at Williams Blackstock Architects, a Birmingham-based full-service architectural design firm with expertise on projects of varying size and scope. He’s been with the firm for the past 14 years.

His body of work across Alabama includes being a project manager on some huge efforts — Lott Middle School, in Citronelle; the historic Ramsay McCormack building in Ensley; the Tuskegee Center for Genomics and Health Disparity Research, in Tuskegee; and the Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) Pavilion, in Montgomery.

And for his work on these and several other projects, Cutts was named Rising Star of the Year by Multifamily Executive (MFE) magazine, a national honor that recognizes an individual in the housing industry who has demonstrated vision, innovation, and strong leadership while making significant contributions to their company, community, and the industry at large.

“The Housing Laboratory”

One goal for the 38-year-old is to spend time in Mexico studying a project called the Housing Laboratory, a small campus of 32 affordable housing prototypes located in the city of Apan.

“The intent of the Housing Laboratory is to serve as a place where architects can visit, study, and then apply the relevant aspects to affordable housing ideas in their home country,” said Cutts, adding that his focus is to reshape the future of multifamily housing, particularly affordable communities, through thoughtful, equity-driven design.

“At the heart of my ambition is a desire to bridge the gap between rental housing and home ownership,” he said. “Design can empower residents to take pride in their homes and, over time, become stakeholders in their neighborhoods. The goal is to integrate pathways to ownership into future multifamily models, giving residents the opportunity to benefit directly from the improvements and economic momentum of the communities they help build.”

Love for Giving Back

Cutts grew up between Huntsville, Alabama, where he spent most of the year with his mother, Tammy Allen, and two younger sisters, and Atlanta, Georgia, where he spent summers with his father, Raymond Cutts Jr., an engineer.

While attending the now-closed Edwards H. White Middle School in Huntsville, the young Cutts had to write a paper about what he wanted to be when we grew up. Becoming an architect “just turned out to be something that really spoke to me,” said Cutts, whose educational path led him to the Auburn University School of Architecture, Planning, and Landscape Architecture (APLA), where earned a Bachelor of Architecture degree in 2010.

While in college, he developed a love for his craft and giving back : “I saw the opportunity once I got into [architecture] to be able to impact people in communities in ways that I’ve always wanted to.”

“I started to travel a little bit more,” Cutts added. “I was in different spaces and learning about architecture, and I realized that there were some really wonderful spaces, just the quality of space, that, growing up in the places where I grew up, I’d never been exposed to.”

These experiences led to volunteer stints with DesignAlabama, a nonprofit that helps local leaders imagine new forms of housing to improve community design and quality of life in Alabama. His work with DesignAlabama allowed him to work in smaller towns throughout the state, giving him a personal look into the need for compassionate solutions to affordable housing.

One of his most memorable projects has been working on the Equal Justice Initiative Pavilion in Montgomery, Cutts said.

“To have been aware of [EJI Executive Director] Brian Stevenson and all the work being done by him and his group, I mean, I can’t even really put into words the appreciation I have for it,” he said.

The EJI is an Alabama-based nonprofit organization that advocates for racial and economic justice by providing legal representation to those unfairly convicted or sentenced, challenging the death penalty, and offering re-entry assistance to people leaving prison.

“Being able to contribute in any small way to the work, to the mission of EJI is something that will live with me forever,” said Cutts, who currently lives in Birmingham with his wife, Sierra, and two sons, Justice, 8, and Judah, 5, who he enjoys making music with. The family has several instruments, including a keyboard, drums, and guitars, but “my kids really have gotten into using [artificial intelligence (AI) tools] to create music,” Cutts said.

“First they’ll beatbox, [imitate the sounds of a drum machine using the voice], or hum a melody, then we can load that into an AI generator, which will create a whole track.”

The 2 Percent

Cutts is part of a small group in a specialized field — African American architects. The National Council of Architectural Registration Boards (NCARB), a nonprofit that helps set up state guidelines for exams and licensure, reported that as of 2023 there were 121,603 licensed architects working in the U.S. The proportion of Black or African American architects has seen slight change over the past five years, with Black architects making up just 2 percent of practitioners.

“I feel proud to be part of that small group, but I also feel a sense of responsibility to help grow that percentage,” said Cutts. “I think just being aware of that fact that there are not many Black architects, I do my best to honor that truth.”

About his chosen profession, he added, “Most people do not know what architects do, and even fewer know that architects do care. … What I’ve learned over time is that, as it relates to the community and specifically to Black people, [many] of the landmarks we hold dear, … such as the 16th Street Baptist Church [were designed by Black architects].”

The historic house of worship, organized in 1873 as the First Colored Baptist Church of Birmingham, Alabama, was the first Black church in Birmingham. In 1880, the congregation moved its present-day location at 16th Street and 6th Avenue North and Wallace Rayfield, Alabama’s only Black architect, was commissioned to design the new church building.

One of Cutts’s career aims is to extend quality design to the people in places that are often beyond the reach of typical architects.

“There are levels of quality to design, and the quality of space can have a real impact on someone’s quality of life,” he said. “That is what really drives me in terms of reaching out to communities that often, again, a lot of people are not serving at the same capacities. Whether it’s volunteering … or even just going out and being in those communities, you learn about people who have needs. I just so happen to have a skill set and a passion for being able to help support in those situations.”

This is for Landowners (Heirs’ Property Landowners), Heirs (Next Generation of Landowners) and Professionals (Attorneys, Practitioners and Advocates.  This is the nation’s largest gathering of heirs’ property stakeholders and will feature two distinct learning tracks: TRACK ONE: 100 landowners and 1 of their next generation and will provide tools and strategies to address heirs’ property challenges, strengthen estate planning and preserve family land for landowners, farmers, ranchers and their net generation. TRACK TWO: 100 attorneys and practitioners will focus on law, policy and practical solutions. New Verizon Innovation Learning Labs Introduce Scholars to Emerging Technologies

Last week, Birmingham City School​s​ unveiled the new ​Verizon Innovative Learning Lab​s​ at L.M. Smith Middle School​ and WJ Christian K-8 School​​.

The new Verizon Innovative Learning Lab​s​ give​s​ students and teachers access to emerging technology such as augmented and virtual reality (AR/VR), 3D printing and artificial intelligence (AI).

The two schools came together today to cut the ribbon on the classroom at Smith Middle. Christian K-8 will hold a ceremony for its lab on Nov. 14.

Board Members Derrick Billups, Mary Boehm, Sherman Collins, and Yamika Foy, Superintendent Dr. Mark Sullivan and Instructional Superintendent Dr. Craig Witherspoon, among others, were in attendance for the occasion, which included performances from the W.J. Christian pep band and cheer squad. After cutting the ribbon, students from both schools demonstrated the various technologies to the guests.

The facilities were made ​​possible by Verizon, through ​​a partnership with Heart of America ​​and the J. Orin Edson ​​Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute at ​​Arizona State ​University.

The Verizon Innovative Learning Labs provide experiential learning opportunities, inspiring students to leverage social innovation and design thinking to develop solutions to impact their communities. Heart of America leads the transformation of the state-of-the-art space in collaboration with the school​s,​ and district teams, and the J. Orin Edson Entrepreneurship + Innovation Institute at Arizona State University provides a project-based curriculum and training for teachers.

As part of its responsible business plan, Verizon works with its leading education nonprofit partners to provide extensive support for educators, free technology, tech-focused learning resources, and hands-on learning experiences to equip students with the tools and skills needed to help prepare them for today’s digital economy.
