Special to the Times

The Jefferson County Democratic Party has elected Josh Coleman as its new Chair, choosing a proven organizer and activist to lead Alabama’s most Democratic county into a new era of grassroots strength, unity, and action.

Coleman has built a career at the intersection of public service, party leadership, and grassroots activism. After playing a strategic role in the election of Randall Woodfin as Mayor of Birmingham, Coleman was appointed by Mayor Woodfin as the City’s first LGBTQ+ Liaison, the first role of its kind in Alabama.

He later became Deputy Director of the Office of Social Justice and Racial Equity and Director of the Academy of Civic Engagement (ACE), where he helped graduate more than 1,400 Birmingham residents into civic leadership roles.

Beyond City Hall, Coleman has been a fixture in Democratic politics across Alabama and nationally. He has served as President of Central Alabama Pride, expanding the reach of one of the state’s most visible grassroots organizations, and previously as President of the Alabama Young Democrats, where he spearheaded the 67 County Strategy to bring Democratic organizing to every corner of the state.

Nationally, he has partnered with the Democratic National Committee on campaign trainings, was elected to represent Alabama on the DNC, and worked as statewide Volunteer Director for the Hillary Clinton presidential campaign in 2016.

Coleman has also advised and managed winning campaigns at every level, including Randall Woodfin’s election as Mayor of Birmingham, the re-election of State Representative Neil Rafferty, the special election victory of State Representative Travis Hendrix, and the ongoing efforts to elect new voices like Josh Vasa (District 3) and Brian Gunn (District 4) to the Birmingham City Council.

In his first remarks as Chair, Coleman stressed the importance of unity and urgency:

“I am honored by the trust of my fellow Democrats. The future of our party begins here in Jefferson County. We must be a party that organizes year-round, invests in grassroots leadership, raises the resources to compete, and delivers results. We will not wait until 2026 to act — we will start building now.”

Coleman emphasized that Jefferson County Democrats are uniquely positioned to model what a modern, inclusive, and effective local party can look like in Alabama. His priorities as Chair include launching training programs for candidates and activists, expanding small-dollar grassroots fundraising, and building the infrastructure to support Democratic wins up and down the ballot in 2026 and beyond.

“Democrats in Jefferson County have the talent, the energy, and the vision,” Coleman added. “Now we must match it with organization, with resources, and with a strategy to win. Together, we can build a party that lifts people up, reflects our values, and leads with courage.”

Coleman holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science from Miles College and a Master of Public Administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is a graduate of the Obama Leaders USA Program and the Bloomberg Harvard City Leadership Initiative, further cementing his role as a next-generation leader for Alabama Democrats.

Jefferson County Commissioner Lashunda Scales raised concerns about voting machines in Tuesday’s mayor’s election, say county officials.

Scales, making her second unsuccessful bid for Birmingham mayor, told supporters during her Election Night Watch Party at The Link on Huffman Road, that “we’re looking into the matter, we’re watching certain patterns.”

According to unofficial results, incumbent Mayor Randall Woodfin won a third term with 24,559 votes, or 74.87 percent in a field of nine that included Scales who finished second with 4,781 votes, or 14.5 percent. Scales also finished second to Woodfin in the 2021 mayoral election.

The runner-up congratulated Woodfin at her Watch Party, but added “what we’re going to do in the meantime is that we’re going to look into some matters concerning polling information and, some things that we’ve kind of been dealing with throughout the day.”

Even though they did not detect any problems, county officials say about a dozen machines were reset “out of an abundance of caution” in various locations.

Just over 32,800 Birmingham residents cast their votes from 134 voting machines in 67 precincts. Like in 2021, Woodfin swept all the precincts including the ones in Scales’s commission district.

In her speech to supporters on Tuesday, Scales applauded volunteers who manned polling locations across the city.

“Fantastic job today,” she told them. “Real excited with all that you have done. … Everybody worked so hard. You are an amazing team and because you are such amazing team, you will forever be in our hearts. … You did an excellent job, and we have nothing to be upset about.“

Scales, who announced her run 30 days before the election, said she faced an uphill battle.

“For us to be right now even coming in second place against a $1.4 million [Woodfin] campaign, that’s God,” she told supporters. “Whatever level you contributed [to our campaign], just know that [husband] Mike and I are very grateful, that we’re very thankful. I cannot say that enough.”

Randall Woodfin, who spent election day knocking on doors up until the polls closed, saw his hard work pay off on Tuesday as he routed eight challengers with a landslide victory for a third consecutive term as Birmingham mayor. Following the most decisive of his victories for the city’s highest elected office (59 percent in 2017, 64 percent in 2021, and 75 percent on Tuesday), Woodfin took to the stage during his Election Night Watch Party at downtown Birmingham’s WorkPlay. Surrounded by family and friends, he addressed a jubilant crowd of supporters and volunteers.

Student, 20, Becomes First to Earn Pilot License at Historic Tuskegee U. in 80 Years

For the first time in almost 80 years, a new pilot has earned a license from Tuskegee University.

Isaiah Hand, 20, earned his private pilot’s license through the new aviation science degree program, which relaunched in 2024 after receiving $6.7 million in federal funding. The university is the site of the storied Tuskegee Airmen program for Black pilots in World War II.

“There is no other feeling like it,” Hand, a Florida native and first-generation college student, said in a news release. He skipped summer vacation to keep training during the summer.

Hand hopes to go on to complete more certifications and get a commercial pilot’s license.

“This is exactly the kind of impact we want to have on our students,” said President Mark Brown. “One only has to look into his eyes to be clear about our purpose. Confident, excited, poised and ready to tackle the most complex problems our world has to offer.”

Currently, 16 other students are working towards their certifications. The university program aims to helps students qualify for jobs in aviation, engineering and meteorology.

From 1941 to 1946, about 1,000 Black pilots trained at Tuskegee, becoming the first Black flying unit in the United States military. They became one of the most highly decorated units who fought in World War II.

The original Tuskegee Airmen program ended in 1949 when President Harry Truman integrated the armed forces.

Recently, Alabama leaders asked federal officials to keep information about the airmen in U.S. Air Force training materials. A video was briefly pulled, then reinstated, after President Donald Trump’s anti-DEI executive order.

HBCU Roundup: Miles College Kicks Off Season in Black College Hall of Fame Classic on Sun.

Miles College, the defending champions of the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC), will face Virginia Union University ranked No. 19 in the American Football Coaches Poll on Sunday, Aug. 31, in the Black College Football Hall of Fame Classic. This game will take place at Tom Benson Hall of Fame Stadium in Canton, Ohio. The kickoff is set for 4 p.m.

This should be a good early season matchup for the Golden Bears (10-3 overall, 8-0 in conference last season) who will face a team, that in addition to earning national recognition, captured the Central intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA) title last year. The Panthers finished 10-4 overall last season and 6-1 in the conference.

Chris Goode, Miles College first-year head coach, has replaced Sam Shade, now the head coach at Alabama A&M, who led the Golden Bears to the conference title and the NCAA Division II playoffs last season.

Goode brings NFL and major Division I expertise to the Miles program. He was a 10th round draft pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 1987 coming out of the University of Alabama. Goode, a defensive back, spent six years in the NFL. He will have an opportunity to put his stamp on the Golden Bears’ program.

Defensively, Miles College has a terrific player with sophomore Carson Pritchett who garnered preseason all-conference honors.

In other SIAC competition this weekend, Tuskegee University will battle Winston-Salem State in the Red Tails Classic from the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery, AL on Sunday, Aug. 31. The kickoff will be at 7 p.m.

The Golden Tigers have some talented players such as offensive linemen Elliott Howell and Lebron Merriweather and defensive back Mikael King Jr. who all received preseason All-SIAC recognition.

In the Southwestern Athletic Conference, Alabama State will visit UAB on Thursday, Aug. 28 with a 7:30 p.m. kickoff. The Hornets appear to have some strength on the defensive side of the football. Cornerback Twillie Lovett and safety Keane Lewis have been selected to the fourth annual Aeneas Williams Award Watch List. The list focuses on the top HBCU defensive backs among Division I college football programs at HBCU schools. Lovett and Lewis are two outstanding playmakers.

In another SWAC contest, Alabama A&M will go on the road to face University Arkansas on Saturday, Aug. 30. The kickoff will be at 3:15 p.m. The Bulldogs will be led by Shade who is coming off a successful run as Miles College head coach. The Bulldogs have two great players to watch: Offensive lineman Tyrell Lawrence one of the best blockers in the SWAC and defensive lineman Nick Glenn is a solid run stopper. Glenn had 29 total tackles and five tackles-for-loss last year.

In Birmingham on Saturday, the Week Zero Classic doubleheader will be held at Legion Field featuring Valdosta State University vs. Clark Atlanta University at 1 p.m. and Fort Valley State University vs. University of West Alabama at 5:15.

For the First Time in Nearly 24 Years, Voters in Birmingham District 3 Elect New City Councilor

0
Josh Vasa received 2,922 votes, or 83.8 percent against candidate Ryan Jones, to replace Valerie Abbottin District 3. (Provided)

Barnett Wright | The Birmingham Times

Josh Vasa knew going into Tuesday’s District 3’s Birmingham City Council elections he would have big shoes to fill after Valerie Abbott stepped down after six terms.

“She [Abbott] served for almost 24 years and in that [time] she missed a total of two, maybe three council meetings …,” Vasa said. “She showed up to every neighborhood association meeting; the word that pops out is ‘dedication.’”

On Tuesday, Vasa received 2,922 votes, or 83.8 percent against candidate Ryan Jones, to replace Abbott, who represented the district for the past 23 years. She also endorsed him for the seat. And he knows that had a lot to do with his margin of victory.

“The reason that folks voted is because we did have the support of a longstanding councilor and knowing that I had her endorsement made the community feel like there was some sense of succession planning and there wasn’t some stranger who has not been doing the work and does not understand the community,” said Vasa, Chief Operating Officer for Woodlawn United Community Development.

With approximately 20 years of experience in public service and nonprofits, including roles at Birmingham-Southern College and McWane Science Center, Vasa said he looks forward to picking up where Abbott left off.

“… whatever it is that the community is interested in, you listen to them, hear what’s important. I believe in the radical notion that communities typically know what’s best for them … the job of the city councilor is to advocate and legislate based on feedback from the community.”

In the other council races, Clinton Woods (District 1); Crystal Smitherman (District 6) and Wardine Alexander (District 7) all were easily re-elected. Hunter Williams (District 2) and Darrell O’Quinn (District 5) were unopposed.

There will be runoffs in Districts 4, 8 and 9.

A candidate must receive 50.1 percent of the vote before being declared the winner. In races for which no candidate reaches that threshold, a runoff election will be held on October 7.

District 4

Brian Gunn received 1,429 votes or 41 percent to incumbent JT Moore’s 1,109 or 31.8 percent

Gunn, a Norwood resident, who serves as a Senior Engagement Manager at Measures for Justice, a nonprofit organization focused on criminal justice reform through data transparency and has also held roles with REV Birmingham, CBG Strategies, and Direct Communications, will face off against incumbent J.T. Moore, a native of Ensley, first elected in 2021 and has a background in youth development and civic engagement, having worked with Alabama Possible, A.G. Gaston Boys & Girls Club, and Volunteer Lawyers Birmingham.

District 8

In District 8, where nine hopefuls were looking to replace Carol Clarke who decided not to seek a second term, April Williams received 1,408 votes or 32.2 percent to Sonja Q. Smith’s 1.388, or 31.7 percent.

Williams, a longtime Birmingham resident and former U.S. Postal Service manager, previously served three terms on the Birmingham Board of Education representing District 8.

Smith, a lifelong Birmingham resident, currently serves as the district 8 representative on the Birmingham Board of Education — a role she’s held since 2017. She holds a bachelor’s in music from Birmingham-Southern College (2003) and a master’s in music and piano pedagogy from LSU (2006).

District 9

Incumbent LaTonya Tate received 2,062 votes of 44.5 percent to John Hillard’s 1,344 or 29 percent. This is a rematch of the 2021 race where Tate unseated Hillard. Tate chairs the Council’s Public Safety Committee and is a member of the Arts & Culture and Transportation & Infrastructure Committees. In 2018, she founded the Alabama Justice Initiative, a nonprofit that advocates for criminal justice reform. She also leads local initiatives such as the RESTORE program for juvenile re-entry and “205 in Park,” a youth-driven civic engagement project.

Hilliard, a former state representative and Birmingham City Councilor, lost to Tate in the 2021 election, will be in a runoff. He previously represented House District  60 from 1993 to 2003 in the state legislature and served on the City Council from 2017 to 2021.

After Vitriolic Mayor’s Race, Juandalynn Givan Speaks: ‘Birmingham Not Ready for a Woman to Lead’

By Je’Don Holloway Talley | For The Birmingham Times

State Rep. Juandalynn Givan, who finished a distant third in Tuesday’s Birmingham mayor’s race, ended her campaign the way she began it: Firing on all cylinders.

The mayoral hopeful did not address her supporters during a Watch Party at the 4 Seasons Sports Bar & Grill on Graymont Ave. and by nine o’clock most had left anyway except for a few loyalists, but when approached by a Birmingham Times reporter in the restaurant’s back room the candidate did not hold back.

“I’ve said this time and time again, if the people of Birmingham like what they have, at the end of the day, on August 26th, they will keep it,” she told The Birmingham Times. “I believe in democracy, and I believe that democracy spoke. And the vote said that the people of Birmingham liked what they had.

“So, with that being said, I also leave the citizens of Birmingham with this: It is a clear indication that the city of Birmingham does not have a belief that a woman can lead this city. And I think that’s the thing that bothers me the most … I think that’s the takeaway.”

“And I think it’s very obvious,” she continued. “The [crime] numbers are almost similar to what they were four years ago with a crime rate that is [number] two or three in the country, nearly 1,000 people dead, potholes in the streets, brush, litter, debris, and overgrown lots that have not been repaired, restored, or fixed in eight years.”

“So what do you think is going to change in the next four [years]? But the people have spoken. And with that being said, I’ve done what I needed to do. My job and task was to tell the world and I think I did a good job of that.”

According to unofficial results, incumbent Randall Woodfin won his third term on Tuesday with 24,559 votes, or 74.87 percent; Jefferson County Commissioner Lashunda Scales finished second with 4,781 votes, or 14.5 percent and Givan finished third with 1,395 votes for 4.2 percent.

One of her biggest challenges during the campaign was not being accepted by other women, Givan said.

“The women of Birmingham were atrocious. I’m just going to say it. There’s just no way around it,” she said. “I went to a precinct [Tuesday] afternoon, and this was another candidate’s person, … and she said that working the precinct she felt as if almost she was traumatized because the reaction from the women was so mean and so nasty and so dismissive.”

“It was challenging connecting with the women, and the women are the predominant voters here in the city of Birmingham. And, unfortunately, the women are the biggest critics. And that’s just a realization, but it’s not just here. It’s in many [cities and states]. Unfortunately, sometimes with these types of elections, that’s just the mentality that we have.”

She continued, “this was a very interesting process trying to run citywide. I represent a district. But what I did see is that the women have no appetite, not only myself but other women said the same thing [as it pertains to] women leadership on this level. I think tonight was a clear indication here in the city of Birmingham that we are not ready for women leadership.”

“We saw it nationally with [Presidential candidate] Kamala Harris. Although we [female political leaders] fight the good fight, we tell the truth, we lay it out on the line, [they say] we’re either not smart enough, we don’t fit the bill, our looks are not the looks of those that should be in office, our dress is not the dress of those that should be in office, and unfortunately [they want to say] we’re not the brightest one in the room. So with that being said, the people spoke, and they liked what they liked.”

Givan said her campaign was based on “making it make sense” which was a message she hammered on her social media channels.

“I made it make sense that we have communities that are under siege . . .,” she said. “I made it make sense that the lots are overgrown, that the potholes are not filled. But also I made it make sense tonight, that my statement held true. If you like what you have, you keep it. And so with that, the people decided to keep it. And so we just move forward.”

Givan, who ran unsuccessfully for Alabama’s 2nd Congressional District 2024, Birmingham mayor in 2025, said she will run again for Alabama House of Representatives District 60, seeking a fifth term, in 2026.

“I show up when others are nowhere around,” she said. “I’m there to answer every call for help, and it has been like that for 15 years. So much so that a few years ago I wore myself down, I wore myself thin. But with that being said, I’m going to keep on pushing and keep on kicking.”

Birmingham Board of Ed Seats in Districts 2, 8 and 9 Headed to Oct. 7 Runoff

The Birmingham Times

All seats for Birmingham Board of Education (BOE) have been decided except for those in Districts 2, 8 and 9.

Sherman Collins (District 1), Derrick Billups (District 4), and Leticia Watkins Harvell (District 6) all won their races comfortably on Tuesday. Mary Boehm (District 3), James Sullivan (District 5) and Walt “Big Walt” Wilson (District 7) were unopposed.

In the District 2 race, Terri Michal received 1,177 votes or 48 percent and incumbent Neonta Williams received 642 votes, or 26.2 percent.

In the District 8 race, Antwon Bernard Womack received 1,910 votes or 44.8 percent and Pamela Bass, received 1,865 or 43.8.

In District 9, Yamika Foy received 1,781 votes or 39 percent and Eric Hall received 1,625 or 35.6.

A candidate must receive 50.1 percent of the vote before being declared the winner. In races for which no candidate reaches that threshold, a runoff election will be held on October 7.

District 2

Michal is a former member of the Birmingham Board of Education, representing District 2 from 2017 until 2021. Elected in a closely contested race in 2017, she served a four-year term before being unseated by Williams in the 2021 election. During her tenure, Michal was an advocate for public education, opposing the expansion of charter schools in Birmingham and promoting increased investment in mental health resources, social-emotional learning, and workforce development programs within the school system.

A Birmingham native, Williams holds a bachelor’s degree in social work from Miles College and a master’s in public administration from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Her career includes service in the U.S. Army, roles in public health and corrections, and leadership positions in educational advocacy organizations such as the Black Alliance for Educational Options and Nashville Rise.

District 8

As a first-time candidate, Bass said she was both humbled and energized by the support she received. “The results affirm that our community is ready for new leadership that puts students first,” she said. “I’m grateful to the residents of District 8 who believed in my vision, and I look forward to continuing this important conversation with even more families and school administrators as we move toward the runoff.”

Over the next six weeks, Bass said her campaign will continue to listen and engage with the community “and I plan to double down on that grassroots approach,” she said. “I will remain visible in our neighborhoods, attend community meetings, knock on doors, and meet with parents, teachers, and students,” she said.

If elected Bass, a mother of Birmingham City Schools (BCS) graduates, said her priority is to “ensure that every child in BCS has access to a safe, supportive, and high-quality education. That means focusing on strengthening literacy and math outcomes, advocating for resources that support both students and teachers, and creating stronger partnerships between schools, families, and the community,” said Bass.

Womack said he was ecstatic by Tuesday’s results.

“We worked hard,” he said. “We reached out, we canvassed, but overall people already knew who I was because I have always been an advocate for public education. Being a neighborhood officer was definitely a big part of it,” said Womack, president of the Ensley Highlands Neighborhood Association.

Leading up to the October 7 runoff, the candidate said he plans “to remind people of where I come from, what I have presented before them and make sure that we keep our reading and our math scores up, make sure that we keep all of our district 8 schools off of the state’s failing list.”

Womack is a graduate of the Birmingham City Schools’ Dropout Recovery Program who went on to earn degrees in business administration from Columbia Southern University and now works as a freelance paralegal. If elected, he would become the first openly gay Black man to hold public office in Alabama.

District 9

Foy has a background in public housing and serves as an Assistant Asset Manager at the Housing Authority of the Birmingham District, where she interprets and administers HUD regulations and PHA policy.

Hall is a Birmingham native and graduate of Jackson-Olin High School, Hall served in the U.S. Army and Alabama National Guard, including deployment during Operation Enduring Freedom. He serves as an associate minister at Peace Missionary Baptist Church and has held roles such as outreach director for the Alabama Voter’s Coalition and community liaison for the Birmingham City Council. He is co-founder of the Black Lives Matter Birmingham chapter.
